movie about an island that had an erupting volcano and jungles filled with wild animals. The island was ruled by a beautiful woman called Tondalaya, the Fire Goddess of the Volcano. It was a low budget movie, but to me,it represented the perfect life.Butthrough the years,Tondalaya was forgotten. The week I turned 50,my marriage came to a sudden end.My house, furniture and everything I’d owned was sold to pay debts that I didn’t even know existed. In a week I had lost my husband,my home and my parents who had refused to accept a divorce (离婚) in the family.I’d lost everything except my four teenage children.I used every penny I had to buy five plane tickets from Missouri to Hawaii.Everyone said I was crazy to think I could just run off to an island and survive.I was afraid they were right.I worked 18 hours a day and lost 30 pounds because I lived on one meal a day.One night as I walked alone on the beach,I saw the red orange lava (火山岩) pouring out of Kilauea V olcano in the distance. It was time to live my imagination! The next day,I quit my job, bought some art supplies and began doing what I loved.I hadn’t painted a picture in 15 years.I wondered if I could still paint. My hands trembled the first time I picked up a brush. But before an hour had passed,I was lost in the colors spreading across the canvas (画布) in front of me.And as soon as I started believing in myself, other people started believing in me,too. The first painting sold for $1,500.The past six years have been filled with adventures. My children and I have gone swimming with dolphins, watched whales and hiked around the crater rim (火山口边缘) of the volcano. We wake up every morning with the ocean in front of us and the volcano behind us.The dream I had more than 40 years ago is now reality.I’m living freely a yawning chimp will stimulate (刺激) real chimps to yawn.Theydescribe in the Royal Society journal,Proceedings B,how this could assist in the future study of empathy (同感,共鸣).The work could also help explain if and how computer games might cause children to imitate what they see on screen.Previous studies have already shown contagious yawning in chimpanzees—stimulated by video-recorded footage of yawns.“We wanted to expand on that,” explained Matthew Campbell,a researcher from Emory University’s Yerkes National Primate Research Center and lead author of the study.“We’re interested in using cartoons for presenting stimuli to animals, because we can control all the features of what we show them,” he continued.Although Dr Campbell doesn’t think the chimps were “fooled” by the cartoons into thinking they were looking at real chimps,he explained that there was evidence that chimpanzees “process animated (动画的) faces the same way they process photographs of faces”.He said,“It’s not a real chimpanzee, but it kind of looks like a chimpanzee, and they respond to that.”He and his team, including Devyn Carter who designed the cartoons, showed the animals the yawning sequences.“We also had the cartoons doing other movements with their mouths that the chimps often do,” he said.“The chimps showed a lot more yawni ng during the yawn video when the controlvideos were playing.”He told BBC Ne w s that the only way he and his colleagues could explain the “very strong difference” they saw was that seeing the yawns made the animals yawn.63.According to the passage, the scientists have found that________.A.yawning is a contagious facial expression among chimpsB.chimps will imitate a cartoon chimp who is yawningC.chimps are able to understand cartoons very wellD.chimps like watching feature Dan Brown’s unforgettable hero,Robert Langdon. What “The Da Vinci Code” did not do,however, was sell one million copies the day of its release (发行).That honor goes to Dan Brown’s third book,“The Lost Symbol”,released on September fifteenth.By the end of its first week on the market it had sold two million copies. The record-breaking sales made “The Lost Symbol” the fastest-selling adult novel history, codes and intrigue,is on full display in this new book.Robert Langdon, the Harvard University professor from Brown’s first two books,is an expert on symbols. In this mystery,he is presented with a symbol tattooed (纹身) on a hand. The symbol itself might not be so unusual. But the hand has been recently disconnected from its body.So begins the novel that takes Langdon hunting and hurrying around Washington D.C.,through museums, monuments and government buildings. The professor has a vicious enemy to defeat, central intelligence agents to outsmart and a friend to save.“This novel has been a strange and wonderful journey,”say Dan Brown himself.“Weaving five years of research into the story’s12-hour timeframe was an exciting challenge.Robert Langdon’s life clearly moves a lot faster than conversation, like any English conversation, must begin with “The Weather”.And in this spirit of observing traditional rule,I shall quote Dr Johnson’s famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of the weather”,and point out that this observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago. This, however,is the point at which most people either stop,or try,and fail,to come up with a convincing explanation for the English “addiction”to the weather. They fail because their premise (前提) is mistaken:they assume that our conversations about the weather are conversations about the weather. In other words, they assume that we talk about the weather because we have a keen interest in the subject. Most of them then try to figure out what it is about the English weather that is so fascinating.Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that the English weather is not at all fascinating, and that our “addiction” to it is therefore very difficult to explain:“To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.All those phenomena that elsewhere give nature an edge of excitement, unpredictability and danger—tornados, monsoons and hailstorms—are almost wholly unknown in the British Isles.”Jeremy Paxman takes offence at Bryson’s comments and argues that the English weather is truly fascinating:Bryson misses the point. The interest is less in the phenomena themsel v es,but in uncertainty...one of the fe w things you can say about England w ith absolute certainty is that it has a lot of w eather. It may not include tropical cyclones but life at the edge of an ocean and the edge of a continent means you can ne v er be entirely sure w hat you’re going to get.My research has convinced me that both Bryson and Paxman are missing the point, which is that our conversations about the weather are not really about the weather at all:English weather-speak is a form of code, developed to help us overcome our natural reserve (含蓄) and actually talk to each other.Everyone knows, for example, that “Nice day, isn’t it?”“Ooh,isn’t it cold?”;and other variations on the theme are not requests for weather data:they are greetings or conversation-starters.In other words,English weather-speak is a form of “cleaning talk”—the human equivalent of what is known as “social cleaning” among our primate cousins, where they spend hours cleaning each other’s fur, even when they are perfectly clean,as a means of social connection.71.According to the author, most people’ s explanations for the English love for weather-talk are________.A.scientific B.incorrectC.fascinating D.accurate72.As is stated in the passage, most people try to find out________.A.why the English weather is so uniqueB.whether the English enjoy their weatherC.why the English are so interested in the topic of weatherD.whether the English really talk about weather when they do so73.In Bill Bryson’s opinion, the English “addiction” to their weather is________.A.understandable B.convincingC.respectable D.difficult to explain74.Disapproving of Bill Bryson’s opinion,Jeremy Paxman argues that________.A.the English talk about their weather because it is unpredictableB.the English don’t talk about weather as often as the outsiders thinkC.the English weather can be as exciting as anywhere else’sD.the English weather-talk is merely a form of small talk75.According to the author,English weather-speak is similar to primates social cleaning in that they are both________.A.ways of greetingB.means of social connectionC.fascinating topics between
