When Joan gave birth to the first boy in her family in three generations, she a nd her husband were overjoyed. So were her parents. Joan expected her elder sister, Sally, to be just as delighted as them. Joan had always admired Sally--the beauty and the star of the family--and felt happy about her achievements. But since the baby's arrival, the sisters have become distant. Joan feels hurt for Sally seems completely uninterested in her baby. Sal ly, who has no children, claims that her younger sister "acts as if no one ever had a beby before."Neither Sally nor Joan understands that the real cause of the current coldness is that their family roles have suddenly changed to the opposite. Finally Joan seems to be better than her eld er sister--and Sally doesn't like it! Their distance may be temporary, but it shows that childhood competition don't fade easily as ages grow. It can remain powerful in relationships throughout life.In a study of the University of Cincinnati,65 men and women between ages 25 and 93 were asked how they felt about their brothers and sisters. Nearly 75 percent admitted having hidden competitive feelings. In a few cases, these emotions were so strong as to have affected their entire lives. Many adult brothers and sisters are close, supportive--yet still tend to compete. Two brothers I know turn into killers when on opposite sides of a tennis net. Off the court, they are the best of friends. My own younger sister can't wait to tell me when I've put on weight. However, she's a terrible cook and that pleases me; I tease her when she comes to dinner. Happily, despite these small failings, we have been an important resource for each othe r.In between the very competitive and the generally supportive children lie those who say that no friendship should survive. Some brothers and sisters stay at arm's length, hut never give up competition completely. Why do these puzzling, unproductive, often painful relationships continue to exist?36. When Joan's son was born, Sally .A. felt very happyB. was undelightedC. moved awayD. admired her a lot【答案】B【解析】细节明白得题。

The most widespread fallacy(谬论)of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported people are free from colds until they come into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mails dropped from airplanes.During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches(战壕), cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds. In the Second World War prisoners at the Auschwitz concentration camp, naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in a drafty(通风良好的)room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose. If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter?Despite the most pains-taking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.31. The writer offered _______ examples to support his argument.A. 4B. 5C. 6D. 7【答案】B【解析】细节理解题。

2015黑龙江省鸡西市高考英语阅读理解暑假自练(2)及答案阅读理解A disheveled(头发凌乱的) man appeared in court Thursday on charges of murdering a Chinese woman whose fight with her attacker was seen on webcam by her boyfriend in China. Police refused to release any details about the crime or its possible motive. The body of York University student Liu Qian, 23, of Beijing, was found Friday in her apartment in Toronto a few hours after her boyfriend witnessed the attack, police said. She was found undressed from the waist down but there were no obvious signs of sexual attack or trauma(创伤)severe enough to kill her. Police say it may be weeks before the results of an autopsy(尸体解剖) are known.Brian Dickson, 29, stood before the court in a wrinkled white shirt and blue jeans as a charge of first-degree murder was read out. He did not enter an appeal. His case was held over until April 26.Dickson was arrested Wednesday. Police only announced his name and his age and asked the media not to publish any photos of Dickson, saying it could compromise the investigation. Toronto police spokesman Tony Vella declined to respond to the request further.Liu’s father, Liu Jianhui, who arrived from China after being informed of his daughter’s death, thanked authorities for their quick action.“I sincerely thank the people concerned with my daughter’s case,” he told reporters after the arrest. “Our daughter was studying very hard.”Police released no motive or details about Dickson, but one friend described the Toronto man as an aspiring actor.Patricia Tomasi, a friend of Dickson’s, told The Associated Press that she acted in a play at a local theater in Toronto with Dickson in 2007.“He doesn’t seem like the type but that’s what they always say,” Tomasi said. “He’s tall with boyish good looks. I don’t know muc h about him except that he wantedto be an actor.”Dickson attended York University where he studied global politics, but did not earn a degree from there. He later worked for the Atlantic Council of Canada (ACC), where he served as an assistant to the president Julie Lindhout. According to his biography on a newsletter from the Atlantic Council of Canada, Dickson has also been a running instructor and has been involved with Developments in Literacy, a Pakistani aid organization that raises money for children in Pakistan.A statement from the Atlantic Council of Canada on Thursday said it was not council policy to comment on staff, but it confirmed that Dickson had been an intern(实习生) with the council from September 29, 2008, until March 27, 2009.Liu was chatting with her boyfriend, Meng Xianchao, by webcam at about 1 a.m. Friday when a man knocked on the door, police said.Meng reported seeing a struggle break out between the two before Liu’s webcam was shut off. Meng contacted other friends in Toronto who in turn called police. The victim’s father, Liu Jianhui, said his daughter studied at Beijing City University before moving to Canada, where she met Meng.Liu Qian’s laptop computer, webcam and mobile phone were taken from the apartment the night of the attack, police said. Police said the online chat was on a live streaming camera and was not recorded, though investigators were trying to figure out if there was any way they could recover it.York University, whose campus is located near one of Toronto’s ro ugher neighborhoods, is one of Canada’s largest universities with more than 53,000 undergraduate and graduate students. About 3,200 of York’s students come from more than 150 foreign countries, the university’s website says.1. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. York University students come from over 150 foreign countries.B. Dickson was a graduate of York University where he studied global politics.C. The passage does not mention the reason why Dickson murdered Liu Qian.D. ACC wouldn’t make any comments on staff even if they committed a crime.2. The underlined word in paragraph 8 probably means _______.A. a successful actorB. a gifted actorC. a common actorD. an ambitious actor3. Why did police ask the media not to publish any photos of Dickson?A. Worrying about bad influences on the investigation.B. Not intending to give out any information about Dickson.C. Not confirming whether Dickson had killed Liu Qian.D. Wanting to protect their citizen for fear of losing face.4. What can be inferred from the text?A. Developments in Literacy raises money for children.B. Seeing the struggle, Meng contacted Toronto police.C. Dickson had no bad records before the murder.D. Investigators could recover the chat record online.【参考答案】1—4、BDAC高考英语冲刺阅读理解专项-----AThe sun shone in through the dining room window, lighting up the hardwood floor. We had been talking there for nearly two hours. The phone of the“Nightline”rang yet again and Morrie asked his helper.Connie,to get it. She had been taking down the callers’names in Morrie’s small black appointment book. It was clear I was not the only one interested in visiting my old professor—the“Nightline”appearance had made him something of a big figure—but I was impressed with, perhaps even a bit envious of, all the friends that Morrie seemed to have.“You know, Mitch, now that I'm dying, I've become much more interesting to people.I’m on the last great journey here—and people want me to tell them what to pack.”The phone rang again.“Morrie, can you talk?”Connie asked.“I’m visiting with my old friend now,”he announced.“Let them call back.”I cannot tell you why he received me so warmly. I was hardly the promising student who had left him sixteen years earlier.Had it not been for“Nightline,”Morrie might have died without ever seeing me again. What happened to me?The eighties happened. The nineties happened.Death and sickness and getting fat and going bald happened. I traded lots of dreams for a bigger paycheck, and I never even realized I was doing it. Yet here was Morrie talking with the wonder of our college years, as if I'd simply been on a long vacation.“Have you found so m eone to share your heart with?” he asked.“Are you at peace with yourself?”“Are you trying to be as human as you can be?”I felt ashamed, wanting to show I had been trying hard to work out such questions. What happened to me? I once promised myself I would never work for money, that I would join the Peace Corps, and that I would live in beautiful, inspirational places.Instead, I had been in Detroit for ten years, at the same workplace, using the same bank, visiting the same barber I was thirty-seven,more mature than in college, tied to computers and modems and cell phones. I was no longer young, nor did I walk around in gray sweatshirts with unlit cigarettes in my mouth. I did not have long discussions over egg salad sandwiches about the meaning of life.My days were full, yet I remained, much of the time, unsatisfied. What happened to me?1. When did the author graduate from Morrie’s college?A. In the eighties.B. In the nineties.C. When he was sixteen.D. When he was twenty-one.答案解析:答案为D。

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind. When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: "No pain, no gain". He hardly watered his new trees, an attitude which flew in the face of conventional wisdom.Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water. So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention. Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb's trees in ways comfort and ease never could. Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer.I know my children are going to encounter hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.31. With the trees planted, Doctor Gibbs often______.A. paid little attention to themB. talked to them to get their attentionC. kept watering them every morningD. beat them to make them grow deep roots【答案】A【解析】细节理解题。

It is a cheerful place, busy and crowded in the summer, but alive in every season of the year. Its royal pavilion(布莱顿皇宫)is a masterpiece of English architecture.Durham: Whatever travelers see or don’t see in England, they must see this city, in the northeast, just south of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. NASA launched an investigation into the disaster and began searching for the astronauts' remains. It said that although there had been some data failures it was too early to nail down a precise cause. The break-up, 16 minutes before the shuttle was due to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, spread possibly toxic debris(有毒的残骸) over a wide swath of Texas and neighboring states.Dramatic television images of the shuttle's descent clearly showed several white trails(痕迹) streaking through blue skies after the shuttle suddenly fell apart. It was almost 17 years to the day that the Challenger shuttle exploded on Jan. 28, 1986, killing all seven astronauts on board.Take-off and re-entry into Earth's atmosphere are the most dangerous parts of a space mission. In 42 years of US' human space flight, there had never been an accident in the descent to Earth or landing. Challenger exploded just after take-off.Rescue teams scrambled to search for the remains of the crew, which included the first Israeli to fly on the shuttle, former combat pilot Col. Ilan Ramon. There were warnings that parts of a vast 120-mile-long corridor of debris could be toxic because of poisonous rocket propellant(推进器)."We are not ready to confirm that we have found any human remains," Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerrs said. He added that among the roughly 1,000 calls reporting debris, some people said they found remains of crew members."The Columbia is lost. There are no survivors, …Their mission was almost complete andwe lost them so close to home. … America's space program will go on," said a grim-faced Bush in a message broadcast on television, which included condolences to the families of the dead astronauts.1. 2015黑龙江省鸡西市高考英语阅读理解暑假自练(4)及答案高考英语冲刺阅读理解专项-----ABanks view online banking as a powerful “value-added” tool to attract and keep new customers while helping to eliminate costly paper handling or teller(出纳员)interactions in an increasingly competitive banking environment.Today, most large national banks, many local banks and credit unions offer some form of online banking, variously known as PC banking, home banking, electronic banking or Internet banking. Online banks are sometimes referred to as “brick-to-click” banks, both to tell them from “brick-to-mortar” banks that haven’t yet offered online banking, as well as from “virtual”(虚拟)banks that have no physical branches or tellers whatsoever. The challenge for the banking industry has been to design this new service channel in such a way that its customers will readily learn to use and trust it. Most of the large banks can now offer fully safe , fully functional(功能的)online banking for free or for a small cost. As more banks succeed online and more customers use their sites, fully functional online banking will likely become as commonplace as automated teller machines (ATM).Online banking has a lot of advantages. Unlike your corner bank, online banking sites never close; they’re at hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week and they’re a mouse click away. If you’re out of state or even out of the country when a money problem appears, you can log on instantly to your online bank and take care of business. Online bank sites generally carry out and confirm (确认)deals at or quicker than ATM processing speeds. Many online banking sites now offer fashionable tools to help you manage all of your valuable items more effectively.1. The word “eliminate” in the first paragraph probably means “”.A. keepB. removeC. reduceD. improve答案解析:答案为B。

黑龙江省鸡西市2014高考英语阅读理解金榜题名基础训练(11)及答案阅读理解-----AThe practice of swapping fashions has recently been attracting attention worldwide, particularly in Europe and the United States. This is an activity aimed at making more effective use of resources by providing a platform for people to exchange free of charge those fashion items in their closets that they don’t use anymore. In London, fashion swap events sponsored by the credit card company VISA focus on the swapping of specific brands. Japan’s first major fashion swap event, “xChange,” was held in September 2007 in Tokyo. The xChange event is designed to exchange not only fishing items but also information and feelings from the own ers of the clothes, using what is called an “episode tag.” Participants put tags on each of the items they bring and write their name and a bride episode about the items. For example, a tag of a white jacket read, “This is a gift from a friend, but it’s just not my style.” On a tag attached to a pair of red shoes, a person wrote. “These don’t fit me anymore. I hope someone who loves red can use them.” Just as shoppers check price tags, some people check the episode tags before making a selection, imagining who used to wear the item. The episode tags make people aware of the human connection by exchanging goods. Many participants say things like, “I’m very lucky to get such lovely clothes for free,”and “I was happy to see someone try on and choose what I brought here.”Unwanted clothes for one person can be new and exciting for someone else. Besides, xChange achieves close to a 100-percent reuse rate by donating leftover clothes to companies that reuse or recycle secondhand clothing. Anything they cannot use, they then donate to developing countries or reuse them as rags.Since 2007, the xChange event has been held every two or three months in a dif ferent regio n of Japan, always attracting many participants. This success is probably because it is an active event that gives participants opportunities to enjoy fashion without increasing the impact on the environment.1. 4. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?A. "Fashion Exchange" Concept Grows in Japan.B. "xChange" Environment Meets the Fashion Industry.C. The Global Rise of the Fashion Exchange.D. Join in "xChange".答案解析:答案为A。

本题为主旨大意题。

由第二段“Japan’s first major fashion swap event, ‘xChange,’ was held in September 2007 in Tokyo.”可知,第一届Fashion Exchange2007年在日本东京举办,后文对其进行了介绍,最后一段呼应文章的中心“Since 2007, the xChange event has been held every two or three months in a different region of Japan, always attracting many participants.”, 因此本文主要介绍Fashion Exchange 在日本的盛行,尽管第一段提到Fashion Exchange在欧美受到了欢迎,但这仅仅是Fashion Exchange的影响,故最佳标题为A。

英语阅读理解荟萃(中级篇)Passage One(Violence Can Do Nothing to Diminish Race Prejudice)In some countries where racial prejudice is acute, violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of solving differences, that it is not even questioned. There are countries where the white man imposes his rule by brute force; there are countries where the black man protests by setting fire to cities and by looting and pillaging. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favor of violence –as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is really frightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realization that when it comes to the crunch, we have made no actual progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts remain basically unchanged. The whole of the recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing. We have still not learnt that violence never solves a problem but makes it more acute. The sheer horror, the bloodshed, the suffering mean nothing. No solution ever comes to light the morningafter when we dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder what hit us.The truly reasonable men who know where the solutions lie are finding it harder and herder to get a hearing. They are despised, mistrusted and even persecuted by their own kind because they advocate such apparently outrageous things as law enforcement. If half the energy that goes into violent acts were put to good use, if our efforts were directed at cleaning up the slums and ghettos, at improving living-standards and providing education and employment for all, we would have gone a long way to arriving at a solution. Our strength is sapped by having to mop up the mess that violence leaves in its wake. In a well-directed effort, it would not be impossible to fulfill the ideals of a stable social programme. The benefits that can be derived from constructive solutions are everywhere apparent in the world around us. Genuine and lasting solutions are always possible, providing we work within the framework of the law. Before we can even begin to contemplate peaceful co-existence between the races, we must appreciate each other’s problems. And to do this, we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communicatio n, in exchanging information. ‘Talk, talk, talk,’ the advocates of violence say, ‘all you ever do is talk, and we are none the wiser.’ It’s rather like the story of the famous barrister who painstakingly explained his case to the judge. After listening to a lengthy argument the judge complained that after all this talk, he was none the wiser. ‘Possible, my lord,’ the barrister replied, ‘none the wiser, but surely far better informed.’ Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite to wisdom: the knowledge that violence creates the evils it pretends to solve.1.What is the best title for this passage?[A] Advocating Violence.Violence Can Do Nothing to Diminish Race Prejudice.[C] Important People on Both Sides See Violence As a Legitimate Solution.[D] The Instincts of Human Race Are Thirsty for Violence.2.Recorded history has taught us[A] violence never solves anything.nothing.[C] the bloodshed means nothing.[D] everything.3.It can be inferred that truly reasonable men[A] can’t get a hearing.are looked down upon.[C] are persecuted.[D] Have difficulty in advocating law enforcement.4.“He was none the wiser” means[A] he was not at all wise in listening. He was not at all wiser than nothing before.[C] He gains nothing after listening.[D] He makes no sense of the argument.5.According the author the best way to solve race prejudice is[A] law enforcement.knowledge.[C] nonviolence.[D] Mopping up the violent mess.Vocabulary1.acute 严重的,剧烈的,敏锐的2.loot v.抢劫,掠夺;n.赃物3.pillage v.抢劫,掠夺4.crunch v.吱嘎吱嘎咬或嚼某物;n.碎裂声when it comes to the crunch = if/when the decisive moment comes. 当关键时刻来到时。
