In this mode, fuel injection occurs at the latter stage of the compression stroke and ignition occurs at an ultra-lean air-fuel ratio of 30-40. This operating mode is also called as stratified-charge mode. Superior Output Mode. When the GDI engine is operating with higher loads or at higher speeds, fuel injection takes place during the intake stroke. This optimizes combustion by ensuring a homogeneous, cooler air-fuel mixture which minimizes the possibility of engine knocking. This mode is also called as homogeneous-charge mode.

Fuel Tank Tank location and design are always a compromise with available space. Most automobiles have a single tank located in the rear of the vehicle. In the tank there is a sending unit which tells the gas gauge how much gas is in the tank. Fuel tanks today have internal baffles to prevent the fuel from splashing back and forth. All tanks have a fuel filler pipe, a fuel outlet line to the engine and a vent system. All fuel tanks must be vented. Before 1970, fuel tanks were vented to the atmosphere, emitting hydrocarbon emissions. Since 1970 all tanks are vented through a charcoal canister, into the engine to be burned before being released to the atmosphere.

The fuel, which can be either gasoline or diesel is stored in a fuel tank. A fuel pump draws the fuel from the tank through fuel lines and delivers it through a fuel filter to fuel injector, then delivered to the cylinder chamber for combustion. If anyone of the parts in the system break down the engine will not run.

Engine load is transmitted to the computer by means of an intake manifold absolute pressure sensor. The sensor converts manifold vacuum into a small electrical signal. This input allows the computer to increase fuel supply when the engine is under load and needs a richer mixture, and decrease fuel supply when engine load is light. Every injection system has a temperature sensor to measure engine coolant temperature. Many injection systems have an additional sensor to measure the temperature of the incoming air. Some late model fuel injection systems monitor the amount of air entering the engine by using an airflow sensor(Fig.2-10). The computer takes this input and compares it with engine RPM and manifold vacuum to determine the amount of fuel to inject. There are three types of airflow sensors, the heated wire, the air valve and the Karmann vortex.

4.1.2 Types of Steering System There are two types of steering systems: manual steering and power steering systems. In the manual steering systems, driver does all the work of turning the steering wheel, steering gear, and tires. In the power steering systems, hydraulic or electric power-assisted steering is used to reduce the effort required by turning the steering wheel. There are three types of the steering gears in use: recirculating ball steering gear, worm-and-roller steering gear and rack-and-pinion steering gear. 4.1.3 Power Steering Systems Hydraulic lack-and-pinion power steering system. This system consists of mechanical rack-and-pinion steering gear, hydraulic working cylinders with working plungers, rotary slide valve, oil pump, pressure-limiting valve and oil reservoir (Figure 4-2).

Valve Drive Mechanism It is used to transfer the camshaft lift The valve drive mechanism consists of the lifters, the pushrods and the rocker arms Lifters change the rotary motion of the camshaft to reciprocating motion to open and close the valve. Hydraulic lifters are used to reduce noise and control the valve clearance on many engines. They absorb the valve train clearance by using oil pressure inside the lifter body. Pushrods are used only on engines that have the camshaft placed within the block. Overhead camshafts do not need pushrods. Rocker arms are designed to change the direction of the cam lifting force.
