Now although Dai-yu’s condition was extremely grave, her power of reason was unimpaired. She was aware of Scribe’s arrival and vaguely heard the first words she exchanged with Snowgoose. She felt too exhausted to cope with a visitor, and so pretended to be asleep. But as the conversation progressed, it became clear to her that what she had taken to be a fact had never been more than a proposal. And then she heard Scribe repeat Xi-feng’s words, that Grandmother Jia intended to marry Bao-yu to one of his cousins, to one that lived in the Garden; and who could that be but herself? Just as at the winter solstice Yin gives birth to Yang, so now in her mind darkness gave way to light. She suddenly felt much clearer within herself. ...Truly:No remedy but loveCan make the lovesick well;Only the hand that tied the knotCan loose the tiger’s bell. After this Dai-yu’s condition continued to improve steadily, and Snowgoose and Nightingale offered many a secret prayer of thanks to the Lord Buddha. ‘Thank goodness she’s better!’ said Snowgoose to Nightingale. ‘But what an odd illness! And what an odd way to get better!’‘We know what caused it,’ said Nightingale. ‘It’s this sudden recovery that’s puzzling. I think Bao-yu and Miss Lin must be destined to be married after all. ‘The course of true love never did run smooth’, but‘Marriages made in heaven can never be broken’ either! You can tell they are destined to be together. That’s what they both want in their hearts, and that must be what Heaven has decreed for them. Remember what happened to Bao-yu last year, when I told him Miss Lin was going home to the South? He nearlydied of shock, and made the most terrible scene. And now that one remark of ours has nearly been the death of her. Theirs must be a bond from some previous life, made a century ago at the Rock of Rebirth!’ They exchanged a secret smile at this romantic theory, and Snowgoose exclaimed: ‘Thank goodness she’s bette r anyway! We must never mention it again! Even if Bao-yu were to marry another lady and I witnessed the wedding with my own eyes, I swear I wouldn’t breathe a word of it to anyone.’ Nightingale laughed.

Practice95(1)I had scarcely passed my twelfth birthday when I entered the inhospitable regions of examinations, through which for the next seven years I was destined to journey. These examinations were a great trial to me.The subjects which were dearest to the examiners were almost invariably those I fancied least.I would have liked to have been examined in history, poetry and writing essays. The examiners, on the other hand, were partial to Latin and mathematics. And their will prevailed. Moreover, the questions which they asked on both these subjects were almost invariably those to which I was unable to suggest a satisfactory answer.I should have liked to be asked to say what I knew. They always tried to ask what I did not know. When I would have willingly displayed my knowledge, they sought to expose my ignorance. This sort of treatment had only one result:I did not do well in examinations. This was especially true of my Entrance Examination to Harrow.(2)The Headmaster,Dr Weldon, however, took a broadminded(宽宏大量的)view of my Latin prose:he showed discernment in judging my general ability. This was the more remarkable, because I was found unable to answer a single question in the Latin paper.I wrote my name at the top of the page.I wrote down the number of the question“I”.After much reflection I put a bracket round it thus“(I)”.But thereafter I could not think of anything connected with it that was either relevant ortrue.Incidentally there arrived from nowhere in particular a blot and several smudges(污迹).I gazed for two whole hours at this sad spectacle and then merciful ushers collected my piece of foolscap with all the others and carried it up to the Headmaster’s table.(3)It was from these slender indications of scholarship that Dr.Weldon drew the conclusion that I was worthy to pass into Harrow. It is very much to his credit. It showed that he was a man capable of looking beneath the surface of things:a man not dependent upon paper manifestations.I have always had the greatest regard for him.In consequence of his decision,I was in due course placed in the third,or lowest, division of the Fourth,or bottom,Form.(4)The names of the new boys were printed in the School List in alphabetical order;and as my correct name, Spencer-Churchill,began with an“S”,I gained no more advantage from the alphabet than from the wider sphere of letters.I was in fact only two from the bottom of the whole school;and these two;I regret to say, disappeared almost immediately through illness or some other cause. The Harrow custom of calling the roll is different from that of Eton.At Eton the boys stand in a cluster and lift their hats when their names are called. At Harrow they file(排成纵列行进)past a Master in the school yard and answer one by one.My position was therefore revealed in its somewhat invidious humility.(5)It was the year1887,Lord Randolph Churchill had only just resigned his position as Leader of the House of Commons and Chancellor of the Exchequer(财政大臣),and he still towered in the forefront of politics. In sequence, large numbers of visitors of bothsexes used to wait on the school steps,in order to see me march by;and I frequently heard the irreverent(无礼的)comment,“Why,he’s last of all!”【解析及译文】(1)【解析】本句中包含了“scarcely...when”的结构,表示“才…就”。

Practice 39How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the delicate symmetry of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch, or the rough, shaggy bark of a pine. In the spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud the first sign of awakening Nature after her winter's sleep. I feel the delightful, velvety texture of a flower, and discover its remarkable convolutions; and something of the miracle of Nature is revealed to me. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently on a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have the cool waters of a brook rush thought my open finger. To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug. T o me the page ant of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams through my finger tips.At times my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. the panorama of color and actionwhich fills the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light the gift of sight is used only as a mere conveniences rather than as a means of adding fullness to life.If I were the president of a university I should establish a compulsory course in "How to Use Your Eyes". The professor would try to show his pupils how they could add joy to their lives by really seeing what passes unnoticed before them. He would try to awake their dormant and sluggish faculties.Perhaps I can best illustrate by imagining what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes, say, for just three days. And while I am imagining, suppose you, too, set your mind to work on the problem of how you would use your own eyes if you had only three more days to see. If with the on-coming darkness of the third night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you spend those three precious intervening days? What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon?I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest on the things that have become dear to you so that you could take the memory of them with you into the night that loomed before you.If, by some miracle, I were granted three seeing days, to be followed by a relapse into darkness, I should divide the period into three parts.【参考译文】我独自一人,在林子里散步一小时之久而没有看到任何值得注意的东西,那怎么可能呢?

During the first thousand years, Buddhism exerted a great influence on the region. Qiuci was the centre of Buddhism on thenorthern Silk Road.Monk Xuan Zang of Tang stopped here on his way to the west. According to his Travels in the Western Region, Qiuci boasted of more than 100 Buddhist temples and 5000 nuns and monks. On either side of the western gate of the city was a Buddhist statue standing over 30m high. One month before and after the Autumnal Equinox big crowds would gather here to listen to sermons. Among the audience were nuns and monks ,and the king and princes. The monks adorned Buddhist images with silk and precious stones. This grand ceremony was known as the "moving image".Qiuci's Buddhist culture exercised a tremendous influence on the central regions. Kumarajiva (344-413), a native of Qiuci, made a significant contribution to the translation of the Buddhist scripts. His father was an Indian and his mother was a sister of Bai Chun, king of Qiuci. As a boy, he became a monk and studied the scriptures under some celebrated monks. He was well-known in the Western Region. He came to Changan in 401. Yao Xing, emperor of the Late Qin, bestowed on him the title of high priest of the nation. He was well versed in Sanskrit as well as Chinese. He preached while translating the Buddist scripts. His translations are accurate and smooth. During his ten years' stay in Changan, he translated 74 scripts in 384 volumes.

Practice27It happened one day, about noon, going towards my boat,I was exceedingly surprised with the print of a man’s naked foot on the shore, which was very plain to be seen in the sand.I stood like one thunder-struck,or as if I had seen an apparition.I listened,I looked round me,I could hear nothing, nor see anything.I went up to a rising ground,to look farther.I went up the shore, and down the shore, but it was all one;I could see no other impression but that one.I went to it again to see if there were any more, and to observe if it might not be my fancy;but there was no room for that, for there was exactly the very print of a foot-toes,heel,and every part of a foot. How it came thither I knew not,nor could in the least imagine. But after innumerable fluttering thoughts, like a man perfectly confused and out of myself,I came home to my fortification, not feeling,as we say,the ground I went on,but terrified to the last degree, looking behind me at every two or three steps, mistaking every bush and tree, and fancying every stump at a distance to be a man; nor is it possible to describe how many various shapes affrighted imaginationrepresented things to me in,how many wild ideas were found every moment in my fancy, and what strange, unaccountable whimsies came into my thoughts by the way. When I came to my castle, for so I think I called it ever after this,I fled into it like one pursued.Whether I went over by the ladder,as first contrived,or went in at the hole in the rock, which I called a door,I cannot remember;no,nor could I remember the next morning, for never frighted hare fled to cover,or fox to earth, with more terror of mind than I to this retreat.【参考译文】一天中午,我正向我的小船走去,忽见岸上有人的赤足脚印一只,从沙上看去,异常明显,见后确实使我吃惊不浅。

Practice28About thirty years ago,Miss Maria Ward of Huntingdon, with only seven thousand pounds, had the good luck to captivate Sir Thomas Bertram,of Mansfield Park,in the county of Northampton, and to be there by raised to the rank of a baronet’s lady, with all the comforts and consequences of an handsome house and large income. All Huntingdon exclaimed on the greatness of the match, and her uncle, the lawyer, himself, allowed her to be at least three thousand pounds short of any equitable claim to it.She had two sisters to be benefited by her elevation;and such of their acquaintance as thought Miss Ward and Miss Frances quite as handsome as Miss Maria, did not scruple to predict their marrying with almost equal advantage. But there certainly are not so many men of large fortune in the world,as there are pretty women to deserve them.Miss Ward,at the end of half a dozen years, found herself obliged to be attached to the Rev.Mr.Norris,a friend of her brother-in-law,with scarcely any private fortune, and Miss Frances fared yet worse.Miss Ward’s match, indeed, when it came to the point, was not contemptible,Sir Thomas being happily able to give his friend an income in the living of Mansfield, and Mr.and Mrs.Norris began their career of conjugal felicity with very little less than a thousand a year. But Miss Frances married,in the common phrase,to disoblige her family, and by fixing on a Lieutenant of Marines, without education, fortune,or connections, did it very thoroughly. She could hardly have made a more untoward choice.Sir Thomas Bertram had interest, which, from principle as well as pride, from a general wish of doing right, and a desire of seeing all that were connected with him in situations of respectability,he would have been glad to exert for the advantage of Lady Bertram’s sister;but her husband’s profession was such as no interest could reach;and before he had time to devise any other method of assisting them,an absolute breach between the sisters had taken place. It was the natural result of the conduct of each party, and such as a very imprudent marriage almost always produces. To save herself from useless remonstrance,Mrs.Price never wrote to her family on the subject till actually dy Bertram, who was a woman of very tranquil feelings, and a temper remarkably easy and indolent, would have contented herself with merely giving up her sister, and thinking no more of.the matter:but Mrs.Norris had a spirit of activity, which could not be satisfied till she had written a long and angry letter to Fanny,to point out the folly of her conduct, and threaten her with all its possible ill consequences.Mrs.Price in her turn was injured and angry;and an answer which comprehended each sister in its bitterness, and bestowed such very disrespectful reflections on the pride of Sir Thomas,as Mrs.Norris could not possibly keep to herself, put an end to all intercourse between them for a considerable period.【参考译文】大约三十年前,家产不过七千镑的亨丁顿家的玛丽亚·沃德小姐,居然吉星高照,有幸笼络住了北安普顿郡曼斯斐园的托马斯-伯特伦爵士,因而地位骤升,成了位从男爵的夫人,从此华屋巨资、荣华富贵、不烦细表。
