A cocky person would take the opportunity to perform an unscheduled Academy Award acceptance speech.A confident person would offer praise to everybody who contributed to their success.A cocky person would claim all the credit for themselves without a second thought.Cocky people might experience temporary perks, but longlasting success is a prize reserved for the confident.·Be approachable, but not a pushover. You should welcome your friends and coworkers with open arms. It’s hard to find a person who will offer a listening ear in time of need, so fulfilling that need will help you become a person people trust. But there can be too much of a good thing. If you find yourself with invitations you’re not that interested in, don’t be afraid to politely reject them.If your schedule becomes occupied by people desiring your attention, set some ground rules and prioritize(优先考虑).To take care of others, you must first take care of yourself.·Be direct in expression, but not nasty in delivery.Receiving honesty with no filter(过滤) is like finding a massive glass of ice water during a desert adventure.Speak words of truth, and people will be refreshed to hear them. Most people sugarcoat their opinions, so a willingness to tell it how you see it will win the appreciation of your friends and coworkers. But here’s the catch: delivery is everything. There is a big difference between “Your article sucks” and “I like the general concept, but I think it might play better if you try it from a different angle.”Truth is something you should aim for, but it isn’t a ticket to be nasty to people. To deliver honesty and helpful feedback, use this sentence structure: “I liked (insert positive quality), but I think it would be better if (constructive criticism/suggestion for improvement).”·Be mindful of your actions, but not absorbed in yourself.Have you ever found yourself nervous while fielding questions in a job interview or talking to a cute person you have a crush on? So eager to make a positive first impression that you can’t escape the constant stream of thoughts causing you to doubt if you’re saying and doing the right things. As a consequence, you might find yourself so selfabsorbed that you can’t focus on what the other person is saying. The less time you spend questioning yourself and the more time you spend actively listening to the other person, the better off you will be.·Be assertive, but not overbearing. There is a thin line between being assertive and overbearing, so let’s take a look at their definitions.assertive (adjective): having or showing a confident and forceful personallyoverbearing (adjective): unpleasantly or arrogantly domineering(专横的)An assertive person would confidently (and politely) ask friends or networking contacts for help if they needed it (and hopefully offer to return the favor). An overbearing person would force people to get what they wanted without a second thought about how their actions affected others.Being overbearing will make people avoid you because no one wants to help a pushy person.Being assertive will attract people to you, if you can reflect confidence and enthusiasm.Five Secrets of Socially Successful People6.invitations7.direct8.badly/eagerly/desperately/anxiouslyparing/analyzing 10.whileB卷Ⅰ完形填空Last year, I taught in a special school where students have severe learning and behavioral difficulties.Another teacher and I had spent weeks teaching the children __1__ behavior for public outings. 课时练1阅读理解提速练Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·沈阳市高三模拟)Wild elephants can tell whether a voice comes from a man,a woman or a boy,a new study says. That’s what researchers found when they played recordings of people for elephants in Kenya.Scientists say this is an advanced thinking skill that other animals haven’t shown. It lets elephants figure out who is a threat and who isn’t.The result shows that the clever animals are also studying people, said study author Karen McComb.“Basically, they have developed this very rich knowledge of the humans that they share their habitat with,”said McComb,a professor at the University of Sussex in England.“Memory is key. They must build up that knowledge somehow.”The study was released on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It’s close to but not quite like the Dr.Seuss’s book, where the elephant Horton hears something that others can’t hear.McComb and colleagues went to Amboseli National Park in Kenya, where hundreds of wild elephants live among humans, sometimes coming in conflict over scarce water. The scientists used voice recordings of Maasai men,who on occasion kill elephants, and Kamba men,who are less of a threat to the elephants. As a result, the elephants reacted more defensively—retreating and gathering in a bunch—to the Maasai language recording because it was associated with the more threatening human tribe, said study co-author Graeme Shannon. They repeated the experiment with recordings of Maasai men and women.Since women almost never spear elephants, the animals reacted less defensively to the women’s voices. The same thing happened when they substituted young boys’ voices.“Making this kind of fine distinctions in human voice patterns is quite remarkable,”said Emory University animal cognition expert Frans de Waal, who was not part of the study.【解题导语】研究表明野生大象能够识别男人、女人和男孩的声音,它们通过思维区分声音并判断谁能对他们产生威胁。

In 1914, Goldberger was asked by U.S. Surgeon General Rupert Blue to study a skin disease that was killing thousands of people in the South. The disease was pellagra(糙皮病).Goldberger traveled to the state of Mississippi where many people suffered from pellagra. He studied the victims and their families. Most of the people lived a hard life. The doctor came to believe that the disease didn’t pass on from one to another, but was instead related to food. He received permission from the state governor to test this idea at a prison. Prisoners were offered pardons if they took part. One group of prisoners received their usual foods, mostly corn products.A second group ate meat, fresh vegetables and drank milk. Members of the first group developed pellagra. The second group did not.But some medical researchers refused to accept Goldberger’s idea. For the South, pellagra was more than simply a medical problem. There were other things, including Southern pride. So Goldberger had himself injected(注射) with blood from a person with pellagra. He also took liquid from the nose and throat of a pellagra patient and put them into his own nose and throat. He even swallowed pills that contained skin from pellagra patients. An assistant also took part in the experiments. So did Goldberger’s wife. None of them got sick.Joseph Goldberger died of cancer in 1929. He was fiftyfive years old. Several years later, researchers discovered the exact cause of pellagra:a lack of vitamin B3 known as niacin.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文.文章介绍了美国医生Joseph Goldberger研究糙皮病的患病原因的过程.Joseph Goldberger医生的认真、牺牲精神令人感动.1.Who were easy targets of pellagra according to Goldberger?A.People in America.B.People put into prison.C.People having a poor diet.D.People touching pellagra patients.C解析:细节理解题.根据第二段中的“Most of the people lived a hard life...the disease didn’t pass on from one to another, but was instead related to food.”,再结合Goldberger在监狱进行的实验的内容可知,在Joseph Goldberger看来,糙皮病和食物有关,而且患者大多生活条件差;再结合实验中提到的主要吃玉米制品的犯人最后患上了该病可知,不良的饮食容易导致人们患糙皮病.2.What did Goldberger want to prove by the experiments mentioned in Paragraph 4?A.Pellagra wasn’t so terrible.B.Pellagra didn’t spread.C.Pellagra could be cured.D.Pellagra wasn’t a medical problem.B解析:推理判断题. 3.Which words can be used to describe Goldberger?A.Devoted and determined.B.Selfless and friendly.C.Patient and expert.D.Stubborn and enthusiastic.A解析:推理判断题. 故选A.Ⅲ任务型阅读(2018·江苏时堰中学第一次测试)When you feel disappointed, you should know it is natural and normal, and everyone will experience it to some extent in their life.Sometimes life deals us a difficult hand, and events and trials arise that we have no control over.Other times it is our own actions themselves that cause our trials.Regardless of the nature of our trials, disappointment is part of life’s journey and how we deal with it will largely determine the quality of our life. Here are some steps to help us to make our journey more enjoyable.Firstly, redefine our rules. It is assumed that everyone has an internal “rule”in their mind.If our internal rules are too perfect, then they will discourage us greatly. For example, if we have a rule that says we need to be perfect, it is likely that we will spend a large amount of time feeling sad and disappointed. So when we feel disappointed, it is wise to review and redefine our rules.Want an example of an encouraging rule? Try this one: I am happy and I am successful since I have made my greatest efforts.Secondly, remind ourselves now and then of the reasons why we are seeking the very goal.As a matter of fact, there are many cases where we have forgotten our original purposesalong the way.So it is of great help to remember the reasons why we are committed to a path in the first place when we feel down.By revisiting those reasons, we will likely renew our commitment and not get hung up on the disappointment of the moment.Thirdly, think about our larger vision and recommit to it.Disappointment is merely a setback on what will eventually be a great and inspiring journey. So when we have those momentary setbacks, it is helpful to think about our larger vision and recommit to it.In our larger vision, therefore, a disappointment is a very valuable experience, which serves as a good educator and makes us more able to meet the challenges of the future. Finally, reset and have a new start.Resetting and starting anew prevents us from abandoning ourselves to self-pity and forces us to get up and move forward.Don’t live in the past.Take what the past has taught us and keep moving.Wake up the very next day as if our whole life is ahead of us and we have the chance to start fresh.Nothing that happened in the past can stop us from creating the life that we have always desired or from accomplishing the goals that we are seeking.6.Remember/Revisit/Recall7.reminded8.capable9.learned/learnt10.qualityB卷Ⅰ完形填空Honesty is always the best policy, especially when it comes to mental health problems. It is the largest study of humour. Participants(参加者)areinvited to log on to the laugh lab website, give a few personal details, tell their favourite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people. The project will last for a year, and the organizers hope to finally discover the world’s funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose. The researchers want to know what people from different nations and cultures find funny. And they want to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humour. The idea is that if we want to understand each other, we have to find out what makes us laugh. This is a subject that has long attracted psychologists(心理学家)and philosophers. Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects us to and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves. By December 2001 over 10, 000 jokes had been submitted. This gave the scientists enough evidence to make earlyconclusions. It seems that men and women do have different senses of humour, for instance.“Our fi ndings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humour, ”said Dr. Wiseman. “Males use humour to appear superior to others, while females are more skilled in languages and prefer word play. ”Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humour. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humour”. But the French like their jokes short and sharp: “You’re a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for$500? ”“Yes. What’s the second que stion? ”The Germans are famous for not having a sense of humour. But the survey found that German participants were more likely to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality. Perhaps that proves the point. Is this joke funny? I don’t know, but let’s say yes, just to be safe.Dr. Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computer. But none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief. Computers already seem like they can do everything. At least they should leave the funny stuff to us.1. Watch out for the trap in jokes!BOne of California’s poorest school districts, theCoachella Valley Unified southeast of Los Angeles, is currently rolling out iPads to every student. But, as with tabletefforts across the country, this one faces skeptics(怀疑)and obstacles(障碍). Some wonder if its projected benefits are being grossly oversold.Darryl Adams talks about his school district’s latest project. “Everyone will have an iPad! ”he says with a broad smile. “It’s going to be exci ting! ”He argues that school districts have often failed to inspire kids. Instead, he says, they’ve been teaching them how to take tests. “And that’s not what education is about. So for the first time in our history as a nation, I think in the world, we’re going to be able to personalize education, ”Adams says. But some districts have publicly stumbled(绊倒)with their initiatives(为解决困难采取的行动). Los Angeles Unified students easily got around restrictions on their district-issued iPads: They simply deleted their personal profile info and then could surf the Web without restriction.Coachella Valley is trying to learn from LA’s problems. It’s working to strengthen profile security and will block harmful and inappropriateonline contents. Some security measures should be a classroom management issue. Kids should have digital citizenship and proper use of the iPad.At Coachella Valley High School, one of two high schools in the district, junior Cheyenne Hernandez says she’s open to new media in the classroom but wonders if the iPad money might be better spent on other things. She says people will most likely steal them, break them or wear them out. “And in a student’s opinion, most of the kids are going to go on Facebook, Twitter. ”she says. But Rebecca Flanagan wonders which ones the district will use, how well it will work and how it will all be integrated into a coherent plan. “That’s where I see the difficulty. The disconnection is between giving students an iPad to use and then making it relevant for the classroom, ”she says. “I mean, it’s a toy for them. ”Large parts of the Coachella Valley are not covered by high-speed Internet. And even where it is available, many families here simply can’t afford the service.6.
