Everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men's minds decline more than women's, according to the results of a worldwide survey. Certain differences seem to be inherent in male and female brains: Men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images (useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial skills), while women tend to excel (擅长) at recalling information from their brain's files (helpful with language skills and remembering the locations of objects). Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline (衰退) people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed. Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline. Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men: The men tested are the survivors, "so they're the ones that may not have shown such cognitive decline," said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in England. People surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category (范畴) as possible in the given time, e.g. "object usually colored gray", and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men usually excel; the latter are typically dominated by women. Within each age group studied, men and women performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.1. The underlined word in the second paragraph means_________.A. naturalB. greatC. obviousD. absolute 2. According to thepassage, which of the following can Not be typed into the same category? A. cloud B. sheep C. trees D. goose 3. Which of the following statements is true according the article? A. Men do better than women when it comes to learning English. B. Women stand out at remembering people’s names. C. Men excel at typing as many words in a particular category as possible in the given time. D. Women excel at dealing mathematic problems. 4. One important factor that affects the correctness of the results is that _________. A. the old men tested may not have shown such cognitive decline B. people surveyed are all old C. people taking part in this test came from all over the world D. women live longer than men 5. The author aims to tell us that__________. A. women’s minds perform better than men’s B. men’s minds decline more with age C. everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older D. a survey on human’s mind decline was done recently 参考答案与解析: 1、答案为A。

2010年高考英语预测系列试题(6)·阅读理解适用:全国阅读理解预测两篇(一)Money spent on advertising is money spent as swell as any I know of. It serves directly to bring about a rapid sale of goods at reasonable prices, setting up a firm home market and making it possible to provide for export at good prices. By drawing attention to new ideas it helps greatly to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it causes an increased need for labor, and is therefore a nice way to fight unemployment. It lowers the costs of many services: without advertisement your daily newspaper would cost four times as much, your price of television program would need to be doubled, and travel by bus or subway would cost more. And perhaps the most important of all, advertising provides a promise of reasonable value in the products and services you buy. Besides the fact that twenty-seven Acts of Parliament govern the terms of advertising, no regular advertiser dare produce anything that fails to live up to the promise of his advertisements. He might fool some people for a little while through misleading advertising. He will not do so for long, for the public has the good sense not to but the poor goods more than once. If you see the product frequently advertised, it is the proof I know that the product does what it promised for it, and that it has good value.Advertising does more for the good of the public than other force I can think of.There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television person declare that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He was telling us the real difference. Of course advertising tries to persuade. If its message were nothing but information, that would be difficult to get more people to buy, for even the choice of the color of a shirt is a bit persuasive--advertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. That describes former Nicaraguan foreign minister Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, who took office at the United Nations this week as the organization's General Assembly opened its 63rd session. The new President's immediate agenda for all 192 members includes addressing the global food crisis, reforming the UN Security Council, and combating (防止) climate change. As Brockmann addressed the Assembly, he noted that "trillions of dollars are spent on wars of aggression, while more than half the world's people are in hunger and poverty." During this session, members will examine the root causes of the world food crisis caused by rising food prices, and its impact on world hunger and poverty. President Brockmann identified the root of world hunger as unequal trade of agricultural goods within and between countries. The issue of expanding the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will likely cause heated debate during the Assembly. The UNSC is a powerful section of the United Nations, in charge of maintaining international peace and security. Currently, the UNSC has 15 members: 10 rotating, non-permanent members and five permanent ones. The five permanent members—China, United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Russia—have not changed since the UN's beginning in 1945. They are the only members to hold veto (否决) power. The General Assembly has agreed to begin talks no later than February 28, 2009, about expanding the membership of the UNSC.In response to questions from journalists, Brockmann said that this session will examine climate change, unequal access to water, terrorism and human rights, nuclear control and disarmament (裁军), the ongoing situation in Palestine, humanitarian assistance, and race equality."What is important now is that we look to the future, learning from our past mistakes, and together carry wholeheartedly on the task of building a new and better world. I am aware of the great expectations that the vast majority of the inhabitants of our threatened planet have placed in the United Nations to bring them peace and security, and to defend their right to life and to full development," said Brockmann. "We must not fail them."1. What topic does the second paragraph mainly discuss?A. World food crisis.B. UN office expenses.C. Less developed agriculture.D. Conflicts between countries.2.
