Courage comes from Ellsworth, Iowa. The name Courage was chosen by voters (投票人)who took part in a survey posted on the WhiteHouse website. The lucky turkey walked on the lawn of the Rose Garden and posed for the cameras at the presidential podium(讲台).The dinner that has become known as the First Thanksgiving was actually a harvest festival celebrated in December of 1621. That’s when English settlers in Plymouth, Massachusetts, gave thanks for the progress they had made after a hard winter in their new country. As America grew, Thanksgiving customs also spread and got bigger. George Washington declared that the first national Thanksgiving would be on November 26, 1789. In the decades to follow, however, people celebrated Thanksgiving locally, with no official date. President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November 1863 a national day of Thanksgiving. It stayed that way until 1939, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it one week earlier. Since it was Thanksgiving Day, she knew that most of the class would draw pictures of turkeys (火鸡) or of Thanksgiving tables with lots of food. What made Mrs. Klein surprised was Douglas’s picture. Douglas was so shy and likely to be found away from the others as they went outsi de for games. Douglas’s drawing was simply this:A hand, clearly, but whose hand? The class was attracted by his picture. “I think it must be the hand of his mum or dad that brings us food,” said one student.“A farmer,” said another, “because they grow the turkeys.”“It looks more like a policeman, and they protect us.” “I think,” said Lavinia, who was always so serious, “that it is supposed to be all the hands that help us, but Douglas could only draw one of them.”Mrs. Klein was very happy to see that th e class showed so much interest in Douglas’ picture. When she had the others at work on another project, she went over to him and asked whose hand it was.Douglas answered in a very low voice, “It’s yours, Teacher.”Then Mrs. Klein remembered that she had taken Douglas by the hand from time to time; she often did that with the children. But that it should have meant so much to Douglas …Perhaps, she thought, this was her Thanksgiving, and everybody’s Thanksgiving—not the material things we receive, but the small ways that we give something to others.8. But all I could think about was the dinner I couldn't enjoy. However, those thoughts soon disappeared. Over the next few hours, I watched hundreds of people come through the shelter. For some, this was the only hot meal they would eat that week. For others, it was the first time to eat a Thanksgiving meal. The shelter was filled with joy.Through this experience, I learned that Thanksgiving is a time to think about your blessings(祝福)and look for ways to bless others. When I gave up what I had wanted, I discovered how much I have. It is much better to give than to receive. In the end, that Thanksgiving became an unforgettable experience.11.
