Theodore Roosevelt
A life of slothful ease, a life of that peace which springs
merely from lack either of desire or of power to strive after great
things, is as little worthy of a nation as an individual.
We do not admire the man of timid peace. We admire the
man who embodies victorious efforts, the man who never
wrongs his neighbor, who is prompt to help a friend, but who has
those virile qualities necessary to win in the stern strife of actual
life. It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.
In this life we get nothing save by effort. Freedom from effort in
the present merely means that there has been effort stored up in
the past. A man can be freed from the necessity of work only by
the fact that he or his fathers before him have worked to good
purpose. If the freedom thus purchased is used aright, and the
man still does actual work, though of a different kind, whether as
a writer or a general, whether in the field of politics or in the field
of exploration and adventure, he shows he deserves his good
fortune.
But if he treats this period of freedom from the need of actual
labor as a period, not of preparation, but of mere enjoyment,
even though perhaps not of vicious enjoyment, he shows that he
is simply a cumberer on the earth’s surface; and he surely unfits
himself to hold his own place with his fellows, if the need to do so should again arise. A mere life of ease is not in the end a very
satisfactory life, and, above all, it is a life which ultimately unfits
those who follow it for serious work in the world.
As it is with the individual, so it is with the nation. It is a base
untruth to say that happy is the nation that has no history. Thrice
happy is the nation that has a glorious history. Far better it is to
dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though
checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits
who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the
gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.
In the entire world there's nobody like me. Since the
beginning of time, there has never been another person like me.
Nobody has my smile. Nobody has my eyes, my nose, my hair,
my hands, or my voice.
I'm special.
No one can be found who has my handwriting. Nobody
anywhere has my tastes — for food or music or art. No one sees
things just as I do. In all of time there's been no one who laughs
like me, no one who cries like me. And what makes me laugh and
cry will never provoke identical laughters and tears from anybody
else, ever. No one reacts to any situation just as I would react.
I'm special.
I' m the only one in all of creation who has my set of abilities.
Oh, there will always be somebody who is better at one of the
things I'm good at, but no one in the universe can reach the
quality of my combination of talents, ideas, abilities and feelings.
Like a room full of musical instruments, some may excel alone,
but none can match the symphony sound when all are played
together. I'm a symphony.
Through all of eternity no one will ever look, talk, walk, think
or do like me.
I'm special.
I'm rare.
And, in all rarity there is great value. Because of my great rare

Title: A Journey Through the Wonders of English Travelogues: A
Masterful Showcase
In the realm of literature, travelogues have always been a
captivating blend of adventure, culture, and introspection. They
weave together vivid descriptions, poetic expressions, and personal
narratives to transport readers to far-off lands. Here, I present
a selection of mesmerizing paragraphs from English travel essays,
each a testament to the artistry of the genre.
1. "As the sun kissed the horizon, painting the sky a canvas of
fiery oranges and pinks, I stepped onto the cobblestone streets of
Paris, feeling the centuries-old history beneath my feet. The Eiffel
Tower loomed majestically, a beacon of human ingenuity that seemed
to whisper tales of bygone eras."

Simplicity is an uprightness of soul that has no reference to
self; it is different from sincerity, and itis a still higher virtue. We
see many people who are sincere, without being simple; theyonly
wish to passfor what they are, and they are unwilling to appear
what they are not; theyare always thinking of themselves,
measuring their words, and recalling their thoughts,
andreviewing their actions, from the fear that they have done too
much or too little. These personsare sincere, but they are simple;
they are not at ease with others, and others are not at easewith
them; they are not free, ingenuous, natural; we prefer people who
are less correct, lessperfect, and who are less artificial. This is the

My father was a self-taught mandolin player. He was one of the best string
instrument players in our town. He could not read music, but if he heard a
tune a few times, he could play it. When
he was younger, he was a member of a small country music band. They
would play at local dances and on a few occasions would play for the local
radio station. He often told us how he had
auditioned and earned a position in a band that featured Patsy Cline as
their lead singer. He told the family that after he was hired he never went
back. Dad was a very religious man. He stated
that there was a lot of drinking and cursing the day of his audition and
he did not want to be around that type of environment.
Occasionally, Dad would get out his mandolin and play for the family. We

I have frequently seen a poet withdraw, having enjoyed the most valuable part
of a farm, while the crusty farmer supposed that he had got a few wild apples

Autumn, wherever it is, always has something to recommend
itself. In North China, however, it is particularly limpid, serene and
melancholy. To enjoy its atmosphere to the full in the onetime
capital, I have, therefore, made light of travelling a long distance
from Hangzhou to Qingdao, and thence to Peiping.
