Travelling abroad***阅读理解。

"I see you’ve got a bit of water on your coat,’’ said the man at the petrol station. ‘‘Is it raining out there?’’ ‘‘No. it’s pretty nice," I replied, checking my sleeve. "Oh, right. A pony(马驹) bit me earlier."As it happened, the bite was virtually painless: more the kind of small bite you might get from a naughty child. The pony responsible was queuing up for some ice cream in the car park near Haytor, and perhaps thought I’d jumped in ahead of him.The reason why the ponies here are naughty is that Haytor is a tourist — heavy area and tourists are constantly feeding the ponies foods, despite signs asking them not to. By feeding the ponies, tourists increase the risk of them getting hit by a car, and make them harder to gather during the area’s annual pony drift(迁移).The purpose of a pony drift is to gather them up so their health can be checked, the baby ones can be stopped from feeding on their mothers’ milk, and those who’ve gone beyond their limited area can be returned to their correct area. Some of them are also later sold, in order to limit the number of ponies according to the rules set by Natural England.Three weeks ago, I witnessed a small near—disaster a few miles west of here. While walking, I noticed a pony roll over on his back. "Hello!" I said to him, assuming he was just rolling for fun, but he was very still and, as I got closer, I saw him kicking his legs in the air and breathing heavily. I began to properly worry. about him. Fortunately, I managed to get in touch with a Dartmoor’s Livestock Protection officer and send her a photo. The officer immediately sent a local farmer out to check on the pony. The pony had actually been trapped between two rocks. The farmer freed him, and he began to run happily around again.Dartmoor has 1,000 or so ponies, who play a critical role in creating the diversity of species in this area. Many people are working hard to preserve these ponies, and trying to come up with plans to find a sustainable(可持续的) future f or one of Dartmoor’s most financially—troubled elements.1.Why are tourists asked not to feed the ponies?A. To protect the tourists from being bitten.B. To keep the ponies off the petrol station.C. To avoid putting the ponies in danger.D. To prevent the ponies from fighting.2.One of the purposes of the annual pony drift is _________.A. to feed baby ponies on milkB. to control the number of poniesC. to expand the habitat for poniesD. to sell the ponies at a good price3.What was the author’s first reaction when he saw a pony roll on its back?A. He freed it from the trap.B. He called a protection officer.C. He worried about it very much.D. He thought of it as being naughty.4.What does the author imply about the preservatio n of Dartmoor’s ponies?A. It lacks people’s involvement.B. It costs a large amount of money.C. It will affect tourism in Dartmoor.D. It has caused an imbalance of species.【文章大意】这是一篇夹叙夹议文。

Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers are changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.Accommodation ZonesHomestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2, 3 and 4 of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town center as much of central London is commercial and not residential (居住的). Zones 3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by underground.Meal Plans Available* Continental Breakfast* Breakfast and Dinner* Breakfast, Packed Lunch and DinnerIt's important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal (谷物类食品), bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by dessert, fruit and coffee.FriendsIf you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host's permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.Selfcatering Accommodation in Private HomesAccommodation on a roomonly basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the lo ngstay student. However, itdoes not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practice English at home quite as much.16. The passage is probably written for ________.A.hosts willing to receive foreign studentsB.foreigners hoping to build British cultureC.travelers planning to visit families in LondonD.English learners applying to live in English homes17.Which of the following will the host provide?A.Room cleaning. B.Medical care.C.Free transport. D.Physical training.18. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?A.Zone 4 is more crowded than Zone 2.B.The business center of London is in Zone 1.C.Hosts dislike travelling to the city center.D.Accommodation in the city center is not provided.19.According to the passage, what does Continental Breakfast include?A.Dessert and coffee. B.Fruit and vegetables.C.Bread and fruit juice. D.Cereal and cold meat.20. Why do some people choose selfcatering accommodation?A.To experience a warmer family atmosphere.B.To enrich their knowledge of English.C.To entertain friends as they like.D.To enjoy much more freedom.BIt's really true what people say about English politeness: it's everywhere. When squeezing past someone in a narrow passage, people say “sorry”. Whengetting off a bus, English passengers say “thank you” rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things. After all, squeezing past others is sometimes unavoidable, and the bus driver is only doing his job. I used to think the same way, without questioning it, until I started travelling to the British Isles, and here are some more polite ways of interacting (交往) with people in UK.People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customer and retail assistant in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be exceptional to hear more than one thank you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, as opposite to Germans, who would normally think that paying their workers money is already enough.Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarelycriticize others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers emphasized several times but none of their explanations were intended as criticism. It has been my impression that by avoiding criticism, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This is also showed in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat women to a meal than German men. However, I do need to point out here thatthis applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men! Yes, the latter are a bit tightfisted.21.What is the author's attitude towards English politeness?A.He thinks it is artificial.B.He thinks little of it.C.He appreciates it very much.D.He thinks it goes too far.22.What can be inferred from the passage?A.The author think it's unnecessary to say “thank you” to the bus driver.B.In Germany, employers often say “thank you” to employees for their job.C.German men never treat a woman to dinner.D.Germans think it is unnecessary to thank workers because payment is enough.23.We can learn from the last paragraph that Scottish men ________.A.are more likely to be involved in a fightingB.are as generous as English menC.treat women in a polite wayD.are unwilling to spend money for women24.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.English drivers often say “thank you” to passengers when they get off the bus.B.In Germany, passengers sometimes say “thank you” to bus drivers.C.English people try to avoid criticizing others in the daily life.D.Germans are more considerate and polite than Englishmen.25.The author develops the text through the method of ________.A.making comparisons B.telling storiesC.giving comments D.giving reasons/examples课时作业(三十五)Ⅰ.1.B 接第一段内容,说Markita Andrews十三岁就成为一名伟大的女销售员,是从她强烈的愿望开始的。

3.D 考查细节理解。根据第六段“All these artists are likely to have known about and admired Vermeer due to the efforts of the critic Thoré Bürger,a veteran of the 1848 Revolution”可知,由于评论家Thoré Bürger的努力,Vermeer才被这些艺术家认可,故D项正确。
2.C 考查推理判断。根据第四段最后一句“Even though he worked all his life in Delft,he painted only 35 known works and left his family poor when he died in 1675 at the age of 43”可知,尽管他终身在代尔夫特工作,但是直到他在43岁去世时仅留下了35件被人们所知的作品,他是在贫困中离世的;结合第一段第一句“Johannes Vermeer is such a quiet and introspective(内省的)artist that it took hundreds of years for anyone to notice he was a genius”可知,人们在数百年后才发现他的艺术价值;据此可以判断,他没能看到他的作品受欢迎,故C项正确。根据第四段第四句“He was not a star like Rembrandt”可知,他在世时并不出名,故A项错误;根据第四段最后一句“Even though he worked all his life in Delft,he painted only 35 known works and left his family poor when he died in 1675 at the age of 43”可知,他在贫困中离世,并没有给家人带来财富,故B项错误;根据第四段第五句“He obviously took himself and his art seriously”可知,他对艺术是严肃认真的,故D项错误。

Bworldclass university while further exploring the grounds on which these nations achieved new milestones of development with each passing day.To study abroad after my graduation, I could not stop seeking my dream. To takethe first step, I did some brainstorming and explored opportunities on the Internet and finally decided to go to China. There were a number of reasons behind it—its advanced education system and thousands of centuries of rich culture inspired me to study there. The primary one was my curiosity how a nation has left many nations behind in a short time at its fast pace of development. So just like that, I applied, along with some of my friends, for a master's degree program at Communication University of China. I was the only one who got selected in the said program and in addition, the Chinese Scholarship Council sponsored all of my expenses. This good news was welcomed by my family. This is my seventh month in Beijing. In my experience so far, one thing that appeared to be missing was the internship(实习) which I tried to find because I want to work here after completion of my studies. After some struggles I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work as an intern with the Center for China and Globalization(CCG). It's very exciting to work on their team as a researcher. Now I can proudly say that my decision to choose China as a study destination was the best decision I have ever made.语篇导读本文讲述了作者在中国留学的圆梦之旅。
