15—16学年上学期高二期中考试英语试题(附答案)(3)

2015~2016学年度第一学期期中试卷高二英语第Ⅰ卷客观卷(共60分)第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AI was in a shopping mall recently, and I decided to go and get a cup of tea. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby.I knew from the first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it.There was a young man in front of me in the line also waiting to be served. The young man handed the servant a twenty-dollar bill and asked for an orange juice as well as a favor. The servant looked at the young man with a little surprise, not fully understanding him. The young man asked her to give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe at all times. Later, there was a wonderful exchange between the waitress and the old man. I only wished I had taken a photo of the smiles on both of their faces. As I was thinking about this event later on, I wondered why the young man didn’t just perform this act of kindness himself. I thought he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do s omething for the old man as well. Thinking of the happy smiles on the old man’s face, I felt how worthwhile it is to help others.1. The underlined word “favor” in Para. 2 refers to________.A. passing the young man a cup of orange juiceB. buying lunch for the old manC. exchanging meals with the old manD. giving the juice to the old man2. Which of the following can be used to describe the young man?A. Kind and considerateB. Generous and proud.C. Rich and friendly.D. Humorous and helpful.3. In the author’s opinion, the young man asked the servant to take the juice to the old man so that____________.A. the old man could probably accept itB. he would become famous for his good deedC. more people would be inspired to do good deedsD. he would become a friend of the servantBThe Horn of Plenty is one of the largest natural health food stores within the Greater Hamilton area. We are big supporters of buying locally and we are here to tell you why it is so important for your family, the community and the environment. The concept of buying locally is simple: buy food produced, grown, or raised as close to your home as possible. Not only will your food be fresher and tastier, but you are helping protect the environment and are supporting businesses within your community and reducing pollution. Better for the environmentSustainability (持续性) and global warming are such hot topics at the moment, and many people want to do their bit to help support a healthier environment. Small action carried out by many people can make a big difference. Most materials in an average North American meal have traveled about 1,500 miles to get from farm to plate. To cut out a big part of this travel would greatly reduce no t only pollution from transportation and refrigeration but also customers’ expenses as well.Taste and nutritional contentLocally-grown fruits and vegetables are usually sold within 24 hours of being harvested. Because they are picked at the height of ripeness (成熟) and travel only a short distance to the market, their freshness, nutrition, and flavor are kept. Produce trucked in from far away may lose both taste and nutritional content.Community and home valuesWhen you buy direct from a farmer or buy locally-grown foods, you are engaged in a time-honored tradition between a grower and an eater. You also help keep dollars within your community.4. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that ___________.A. global warming is the most serious problem nowB. North American food is rich in various kinds of materialsC. the increased cost of transporting food is passed on to the customersD. most people support buying locally5. Locally-grown fruits and vegetables taste good mostly because___________.A. they are picked when they are fully grownB. they are not polluted by chemical fertilizerC. they can be harvested at any timeD. they are sent to the market at a high speed6. According to the author, when you buy locally-grown foods ___________.A. you can see how fruits and vegetables growB. you will contribute to protecting the environmentC. you will become much healthier and prettierD. you are making money from your community7. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. The way to keep your food tasty and healthy.B. The popularity of the Horn of Plenty.C. The importance of protecting the environment.D. The benefits of buying locally.CA classical guitarist was excited to hear from New York City police that his valuable guitar had been found. It disappeared almost a year ago when he got out of a cab and forgot to take the guitar with him. Laurence Lennon, 44, said he was running late that day. He was talking to his manager on his cell phone when he dashed out of the taxi. He said that he gave the driver $ 60 and told him to keep the change. He walked through the front doors of the concert hall still talking on the phone to his manager.Upon discovering his loss, Lennon used his cell phone to call the police. The policewoman asked him for the name of the cab company, the number of the cab, and the name of the driver. He said that she had to be kidding. She told Lennon that he could file a missing items report at the police station or online. Lennon asked for the online address. She told him that finding the guitar might take a couple of years—finding guitars was not as important as finding murderers and marijuana smokers. Then she told him to have a nice day.“This year has been depressing,” said Lennon. “I had to put off the recording of two new CDs. I've been using borrowed guitars. And I was losing hope of ever recovering my guitar.”Lennon was reunited with his $ 100,000 musical instrument yesterday. The case and the guitar had been discovered in the corner of a coffee house only two blocks from where Lennon had lost it in the first place. Lennon had offered a $ 10,000 reward for its return. He said he would give the reward to the coffee house owner, who had informed the police.8. It can be inferred from this reading passage that________.A. Lennon couldn't give any useful information about the driver and his cabB. Lennon gave the driver much more money than what was actually neededC. Lennon was too busy talking to his friend to remember to pay the cab driverD. Lennon used to work at the concert hall in New York City9. The policewoman told Lennon________.A. not to worry about the guitarB. to have a nice day in New York CityC. to wait with patienceD. to find the cab driver and talk to him10. Which of the following is the most important according to the policewoman?A. Finding a lost guitar.B. Finding the cab driver.C. Enjoying one's own lifeD. Finding murderers.11. The underlined word“depressing”can be best explained by“________”.A. making people unfortunateB. making people feel sadC. making people losing moneyD. making people losing good luckDHaving a great collection of books at home doesn’t really mean that you are a person who has a passion for literature and reading. It can be a family inheritance(继承)or it can be just to impress people around you about the fact that you are a person of culture. On the other hand, there are many persons who cannot afford to buy books, because some of them are quite expensive, but they usually go to libraries and spend hours reading something that interests them a lot, or just borrow books to read at home. From my point of view, literature is very important in our lives from several points of view. For example, reading is a means of gaining culture and enriching our knowledge in different areas of activities. It can help us have a great imagination and it makes things easier when it comes to making compositions on different themes. It gives you the possibility to speak about science, even if you don’t work in this field, or you can express your opinion about a political aspect, just because you have read something connected to that.Secondly, literature offers us the possibility to enter the world of imagination, and to leave apart the real one for a couple of hours. We come to meet kings and queens many years ago, dream in the world of the rich or imagine how life will be in the future. Sometimes, we identify ourselves with the characters in the stories we read and they can give us some clues to solve our problems and how to react in certain circumstances. To conclude, I would like to say that literature is the perfect means to enrich our culture, to express correctly and have a rich vocabulary, to be able to interfere(干涉)in conversations in different fields of interest and to really be considered an erudite person.12. The people who are fond of literature are those that _________.A. go to libraries on weekendsB. buy expensive books in the bookstoreC. keep many books in their studiesD. have much interest in reading13. We can learn from the third paragraph that _________.A. we can bring kings and queens back to lifeB. what we read can be useful in our daily lifeC. it is very good for us to stay alone for some hoursD. we can make friends with the people in the stories14. The underlined word “erudite” in the last paragraph probably means_________.A. hard-workingB. enthusiasticC. learnedD. creative15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To advise readers to like reading.B. To explain the true meaning of reading.C. To tell readers how to read a book.D. To tell readers who has the real passion for literature.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AFrom Japan to Indonesia, a certain kind of pop culture is very hot. But it doesn’t come from Hollywood—it’s Hallyu(韩流), the wave of Korean pop culture that has washed over Asi a. It has influenced everything from music to television. And th anks to the Internet and social media, it’s now spreading worldwide.South Korea produces all types of entertainment, the most po pular being music, soap operas and films. What makes Hallyu so hot in Asia? One reason is that its products are of high qu ality and much cheaper than western products. Another reaso n is that eastern cultures are similar to each other, although th ere are language differences.Korean pop music, or “K-pop”, ranks the first everywhere. Fans love the songs and the attractive stars. Companies like SM Entertainment, JYP Enter tainment and YG Entertainment help many K-pop stars, such as Super Junior, Big Bang and Rain, to succe ed. They are not only popular in Asia but also enjoy popularity in the West. In 2011, Big Bang’s mini-album Tonight reached the top 10 on U.S. Tunes Top Pop Alb ums. When SM Entertainment took their 2010 world tour to Lo s Angeles, only 30 percent of the 15,000 fans were Korean. H alf of the audience wasn’t even Asian! One important reason for the success of Hallyu is simply the I nternet. A little more than 10 years ago, Korean soap operas, movies and music reached the outside world quite slowly. The y began in Korea, and then gradually spread outward, appeari ng in its neighboring countries where local TV and radio companies would play them. Now they are played around the world online at the same time.YouTube is another major way to get Korean entertainment to fans everywhere. It is an inexpensive and valid way for artists to introduce their work to a larger audience. In 2010 the YouT ube channels for the top three Korean entertainment groups t ogether had nearly 800 million views from 225 different countr ies.21.Hallyu is very hot in Asia partly because________.A. languages in Asia are similar to each otherB. the culture is the most fashionable in the worldC. the quality of South Korea’s products is highD. South Korea’s products are the cheapest in Asia22.The author shows the popularity of K-pop in the West_______.A. in order of spaceB. by giving examplesC. by listing reaso nsD. in order of time23.What does the underlined word valid (in Para. 5) mean?A. slowB. successfulC. uselessD. necessary24.What would be the best title for the passage?A. K-pop Ranks the First EverywhereB. YouTube Helps Korean Cultures SpreadC. Korean Soap Operas Are Growing in PopularityD. Hallyu Makes Waves across the WorldBRecently,I came across an interesting article on the differences betwee n British English and American English. I had a lot of fun readi ng it and thinking of as many differences as I could as an Am erican.Their cars have “bonnets(发动机罩)”, while ourselves have “hoods”. They park their cars in a “car park” while we leave ours in a “parking lot”. Our “cookies”are their “biscuits”, while their “rubbers” are our “erasers”. Then there are the food words. Would you want to eat someth ing called “Toad in the Hole” or “Bangers and Mash” or “Spott ed Dick”?I’m here to report they are all very tasty. There are American equivalents(相等物),of course. We’ve got “Shoofly Pie”,“Chicken Fried Steak” and “Mississippi Mud Pie”. What they call “crisps” is what we call “potato chips” and when we ask for “chips” in England we will get what we know at home in America as “French fries”.They find it extremely exciting that we call the “toilet” the “bath room” and they really double over(弯腰) with laughter when we ask for the “restroom”. American la dies in England who ask for the “little girl’s room” or the “powd er room” will be met with blank stares. A “fag” is a “cigarette” i n the UK, which can lead to endless confusion for British visit ors looking for a cigarette in America. Americans on the other hand are endlessly confused by English signs put up over doo rways saying “Way Out”. We Americans walk on the sidewalk not the pavement. “Pavement” in America is the actual cemen t(水泥) the sidewalk is made of.25. What do British people call French Fries?A. Crisps.B. Chips.C. Shoofly.D. Mississippi Mud Pie.26. It would be difficult for British people to look for a cigarette in America because ______.A. American people don’t like giving others cigaretteB. it is not allowed to smoke in public in AmericaC. Americans don’t know a “fag” means a “cigarette?D. American people don’t smoke often27. What is the passage mainly about?A. Some differences between American English and British E nglish.B. Some similar habits between Americans and the British.C. Different communicating ways between Americans and th e British.D. Different body languages between Americans and the Briti sh.CFlorida is celebrating a big anniversary this year. Five hundre d years ago, on April 2, 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce a rrived on the east coast of what is now Florida. Native Americ ans had been living there for centuries, but Ponce was the firs t European to set foot in what would become the United State s.According to legend, Ponce may have landed in Florida by mi stake. He is said to have been looking for an island called Bim ini and its Fountain(喷泉) of Youth. The magical fountain could supposedly make ol d people young again. Instead, Ponce landed on Florida and claimed it for Spain. He named it La Florida, or “flowery place”.Ponce explored more of Florida’s coasts over the next few m months. He later returned to Spain but went back to Florida in1521 to attempt to set up a colony. However, native America ns attacked him and his friends, and Ponce was killed. It wasn ’t until 1565 that Spain set up a successful colony at St. Augu stine on Florida’s east coast. It is the oldest European settlem ent in the U.S.Florida didn’t belong to the U.S. until Spain lost control. It was admitted to the U.S. as the 27th state in 1845.Today, Florida has one of the fastest-growing populations of any state. More than 19 million people call it home .It’s also popular with tourists. Last year, 89 million people visit ed the Sunshine State. These days, most visitors come in sea rch of fun in the sun on its sandy beaches and its theme parks , such as Disney World and Sea World.28. Ponce was killed_____.A. during his second stay in FloridaB. on his way to Flori daC. by his friendsD. after he set up a colony29. What can we learn about Ponce from Paragraph 2?A. He finally found Fountain of Youth.B. He could make old people young again.C. He hated Florida.D. He discovered Florida by accident.30. Five hundred years ago,_____.A. the United States was foundedB. Florida was discovered by human beingsC. the first European came to FloridaD. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce was born31. Which of the following is TRUE about Florida?A. There are 89 million people in Florida at present.B. Its population has been increasing in recent years.C. Tourists are losing interest in it.D. Its beaches are not well protected.DThe production of coffee beans is a huge, profitable business,but,unfortunately,full-sun production is taking over the industry and bringing about a lot of damage. The change in how coffee is grown from sha de-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of certain anima ls and birds, and even disturbs the world's ecological balance. On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area's birds and animals. The shade of t he forest trees provides a home for birds and other species (物种) that depend on the trees' flowers and fruits. Full-sun coffee growers destroy this forest home. As a result, many species are quickly dying out.On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threatens (威胁) human life. Medical research often makes use of the fores ts' plant and animal life, and the destruction of such species could prevent researcher s from finding cures for certain diseases. In addition, new coffee-growing techniques are poisoning the water locally, and eventually the world's groundwater. Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations (种植园) could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The l oss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the w orld's climate, and studies show that the loss of oxygen giving trees also lea ds to air pollution and global warming. Moreover, the new growing techniques are contributing to acidic (酸性的) soil conditions. It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many a spects of life, from the local environment to the global ecology. But consum ers do have a choice. They can purchase shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coff ee.32. Where does this text probably come from?A. A medical journal.B. An engineering textbook.C. A tourist guide.D. An agricultural magazine.33. What can we learn about full-sun coffee production from Paragraph 4?A. It limits the spread of new growing techniques.B. It slows down the loss of shade trees.C. It improves local soil conditions.D. It leads to air pollution and global warming.34. The purpose of the text is to_________.A. entertain D. persuadeB. advertiseC. instruct35. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole te xt?第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AAmerican scientists have developed the first material that repairs itself. The material is a kind of plastic that has been engineered to fill breaks(断裂)in its surface.Plastics are used today in everything from airplane wings(机翼) to hundreds of objects found at home. Scientists wanted to find a way to make objects made of plastic last longer. The researchers hope their new discovery can be used to make objects that are difficult or impossible to replace. The surface of plastic objects breaks over time. Very small breaks develop every time a plastic object is used. The researchers wanted to find out how to stop plastic from developing small breaks that weaken and destroy it. They found the answer in the chemical structure of plastic itself.Plastic is made of monomers(单体). These monomers link together to form polymers(聚合物). Polymers give plastic its ability to be shaped and its strength. The research team found a way to make plastic that contains very small balloons filled with monomer liquid. When the new plastic cracks, the monomer liquid is let out and flows into the crack. Thus the break is repaired. The repaired plastic has seventy-five percent of the strength of undamaged plastic. The new self-repairing plastic is not yet ready for production. But it has several possible uses. One could be in space vehicles where parts cannot be repaired or replaced. Another possible use might be in bridges. And it could be used in people, to replace bone joints that have become broken or damaged.16. We know from the passage that the repair is done as________.A. the cracked plastic parts are changedB. the plastic is madeC. the liquid is put into the plastic cracksD. the plastic cracks17. The scientists are planning to use the new material in space vehicles, bridges andpeople because________.A. the plastic parts in them are required to last longerB. the plastic parts in them are easily broken or damagedC. the new material cannot be used elsewhereD. they want to experiment in these places first18. What can we know about the new material talked about in the passage?A. It is a kind of liquid that is commonly used.B. It is more difficult to make than common plastics.C. Its surface does not crack so easily as other ones.D. It makes it difficult or impossible to replace plastic objects.BIt was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers(祖先) had lived in the same way for centuries. Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places. This seemed like money for nothing(免费的). There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them.Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn’t last long. The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately. The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left. Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job---eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases. Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.19. What does the underlined word “catch” in paragraph 2 mean?A. getB. holdC. carryD. the frogs caught by children21. What might be the cause of the children’s sickness?A. the crops di dn’t do wellB. there were too many insectsC. the visitors brought in diseasesD. the pesticides were overused22. What can we infer from the last sentence of the text?A. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the countryB. Health is more important than moneyC. The harmony between man and nature is importantD. good old day will never be forgottenCWhen Chinese people are spending the Spring Festival, westerners wonder which is the symbol of the year of yang. Is it the Year of the Goat or the Year of the Sheep? But the word for goats and sheep in Chinese is “yang”.When westerners want to translate a children’s TV show into English. Is it translated as Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf or Pleasant Sheep and Big Big Wolf ?So what’s the d ifference between a sheep and a goat? For westerners, sheep are seen as harmless while goats aren’t easy to control. There is a similar problem when the Year of the Rat/Mouse comes. Westerners think that mice are generally seen as cute animals, while rats are seen as dirty ones.Dragons and pigs also cause the same confusion(困惑). In westerners’ opinion, dragons are harmful to humans, but in China, they are usually symbols of good luck, so are pigs. However, in the west, pigs are dirty and fat.Westerners are still trying to work out exactly what year they’re celebrating. Whic h represents the Year of yang, Sheep or Goat? A Chinese word could translate to both. And the same things also take place on other animals, such as dragon, snake and monkey. Some Net users pointed out that this is not the only animal on the Chinese lunar calendar(农历). “It seems like westerners could be confused every year. What is the passage mainly about?A. The different hobbies between China and western countriesB. The different animals between China and western countriesC. The different festivals between China and western countriesD. The different culture between China and western countriesDEdward Wilson is America’s, if not the world’s, leading naturalist. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world’s natural r esources. How are they used? What has been lost? What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use? Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biodiversity(生物多样性)of our earth.Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment protection, Henry David Thoreau(亨利·戴维·梭罗). He compares today’s Walden Pond(瓦尔登湖)with that of Thoreau’s day. Wilson will use such comparisons for the rest of the book. The problem is clear: man has done great damage to his home over the years. Can the earth, with human help, be made to return to biodiversity levels that will be able to support us in the future?Biodiversity, Wilson argues, is the key to settling many problems the earth faces today. Even our agricultural crops can gain advantages from it. A mere hundred species(物种) are the basis of our food supply, of which but twenty carry the load.Wilson suggests changing this situation by looking into ten thousand species that could be made use of, which will be a way to reduce the clearing of the natural homes of plants and animals to enlarge farming areas. At the end of the book, Wilson discusses the importance of human values in considering the environment. If you are to continue to live on the earth, you may well read and act on the ideas in this book.27. We learn from the text that Wilson cares most about ______.A. the environment for plantsB. the biodiversity of our earthC. the wastes of natural resourcesD. the importance of human values28. How many species are most important to our present food supply?A. TwentyB. EightyC. One hundredD. Ten thousand29. Wilson suggests that one way to keep biodiversity is to _______.A. learn how to farm scientificallyB. build homes for some dying speciesC. make it clear what to eatD. use more species for food30. We can infer that the text is _______.A. a description of natural resourcesB. a research reportC. a book reviewD. an introduction to a scientist.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
