From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessaryto spend a lot of time in "small talk", usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries -- like the UK or France -- people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or caf6s rather than at the office.Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.72. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to _______.A. develop closer relationsB. share the same cultureC. get to know each otherD. keep each other company73. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _________.A. the English prefer to make long speechesB. too many words are of no useC. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by natureD. even talk and silence can be culturally different74. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?A. By sharing different ways of life.B. By accepting different habits.C. By recognizing different values.D. By speaking each other' s languages.75. What would be the best title for the text?A. Multicultural Environment.B. Cross-Cultural Differences.C. How to Understand Each Other.D. How to Build Up a Relationship.3答案72.D 73.D 74.C 75.B******************************************************结束2The literal meaning of philosophy is “love of wisdom〞. But this meaning does not tell us very much. Unlike the other disciplines〔学科〕,philosophy cannot be defined by what you study ,because it is actually unlimited. Anything can be the subject matter of philosophy: are, history, law, language, literature, mathematics, and in fact, the other academic disciplines are directly related to philosophy. For this reason you get a Doctorate〔博士学位〕of Philosophy (Ph. D.) in biochemistry, or computer science, or psychology. Two broad sub-fields of philosophy are logic and the history of philosophy. Logic is the science of argument and critical thinking. It provides sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning .The history of philosophy involves the study of major philosophers and period in the development of philosophy.Of what use is philosophy? First it is useful in educational advancement. It is necessary for understanding other disciplines. Only philosophy questions the nature of the concepts used in a discipline, and its relation to other discoveries. And through the study of philosophy, one develops sound methods of research and analysis that can be applied to any field. There are a number of general uses of philosophy. It strengthens one’s ability to solve problems, to communicate, to organize ideas and issues, to persuade, and to take what is the most important form a large quantity of data. These general uses are of great benefit in the career field, not necessarily obtaining one’s first job after graduation, but for preparing for position of responsibility, management andleadership later on. It is very shortsighted after all, to take a course of studies only for the purpose of getting one’s first job. The useful skills developed through the study of philosophy have significant long-term benefits in career advancement. No other discipline systematically follows the ideals of wisdom, leadership, and capacity to resolve human conflict.72.According to Paragraph 1. Philosophy can best be described as the study of .A.social sciencesB.natural sciencesC.both social and natural sciencesD.the subject matter of politics73.With the study of philosophy, you can .A.become a great leaderB.succeed in everythingC.find a good job soon after graduationD.make progress in your career development74.According to the passage, which of the follwing statements is TRUE?A.Philosophy is an independent discipline.B.Logic helps you to become a better thinker.C.The study of philosophy brings you immediate benefits.D.The meaning of philosophy is too limited to define.75. From the passage, we can concludeA.not all the subjects have to do with philosophyB.a person will get a Ph. D. if he/she studies philosophyC.philosophy can be helpful for the study of any other subjectsD.philosophy is the only solution to all the problems in the world4,答案72.C 73.D 74.B 75.C********************************************************结束The Three Gorges (三峡)Dam, the largest dam in the world, is also the largest engineering project on the face of the earth. 通过提醒我们去想事情好的一面而不是坏的一面, 积极心理学家认为,我们可以让痛苦来得慢一些,当我们的生活遭受到打击时,我们会更有能力去应付它。
7. Seligman, who is the figurehead"' of the positive psychology movement, goes further than suggesting people learn to think positively. He has worked out what he sees as a blueprint for happiness that people can use to set them on the path to a fulfilling and satisfying life. lie believes there are three routes to happiness, which he calls the "pleasant life", the "good life" and the "meaningful life". Some are better than others, although a mix of all three is ideal. The pleasant life sees superficial pleasures as the key to happiness, and it is this that many people mistakenly pursue, he says."The biggest mistake that people in the rich west make is to be enchanted with the Hollywood idea of happiness, which is really just giggling and smilffig a lot," he says. While a life bent on instant pleasure and gratification offers some degree of happiness, it is ultimately unsatisfying on its own, he says.

However urban life strikes you, cities worldwide have been growing even more rapidly. Some of this growth has occurred in the developed world, but the most dramatic increase has been in the Third World.Almost all the world’s population growth over the next 30 years will take place in the cities of developing countriesBy the year 2030,for the first time in history,60 percent of the world’s people will be living in cities. This is actually good news in some ways.“Cities are the fundamental building blocks of prosperity,〞 says Marc Weiss, chairman of the Prague Institute for Global Urban Development,“ both for the nation and for families.〞 Industrial and commercial activities in urban areas account for between 50 and 80 percent of the gross domestic product 〔GDP〕in most countries of the world“ there’s the crazy notion that the way to deal with a city’s problems is to keep people out of them,〞 Weiss continued.“But the problems of the rural life are even mor e serious than those of the city.〞 For better or worse,urban-watchers are clear on one point: The quality of life for most people in the future will be determined by the quality of cities. Those cities will be bigger than ever. And yet, population numbers by themselves don’t determine a city’s prospects; after all,Addis Ababa,Ethiopia, and Hamburg,Germany, have the same population.Nor is explosive growth necessarily the determining factor.“City problems,〞 one authority points out,“mostly have to do with weak, ineffective, and usually unrepresentative city governments.〞1.The passage mainly discusses ______________.A.Big cities.B.City life.C.Population.D.Gross Domestic Product.2.According to the passage,in the year of 2030 _______.A.there will be 21 cities having a population of more than 10 million.B.rural area will be extinct.C.most people will live in cities.D.the third world will keep abreast with the developed world.3.In the author’s opinion,_________.A.better city, better lifeB.both urban and rural areas have a larger populationC.the larger population, the faster a city developsD.both urban and rural areas have larger gross domestic products4.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?A.The developing countries develop faster than the developed countries.B.Cities contribute more to the GDP than the villagers.C.Some problems are more easily solved in cities than in country.D.It’s impossible to solve urban problems by getting people out of cities.5.The last paragraph implies that ____________.A.public services are ineffective.B.cities are increasing too fast.C.population is not linked with development.D.government should be responsible for the problems in the cities.【参考答案】1---5、A C A A D【2021届六校第二次联考】阅读理解Every year many students went to the college bookstore to purchase the different textbooks that they need for their classes. Little do these students realize that, in doing so, they are throwing good money away. It may sound unbelievable but textbooks, in some cases, actually cost as much as, if not more than, college fees. Many people think that college bookstores are the most convenient source for textbooks. Titles are usually kept and students may purchase new textbooks or choose to buy second-hand books and save money. But the money saved by purchasing second-hand textbooks from college bookstores is small compared to the amount they could save by shopping online.More and more online booksellers have begun selling textbooks at heavily discounted prices. Online second-hand bookstores are another source for college books as they keep a large number of textbooks, which means sizable savings for students. Students should avoid purchasing their textbooks at the first store that they surf online since there a re so many ‘unreal’ booksellers on the Net. Price isn't the only factor to consider when making an online purchase. Students should also consider shopping costs and delivery time when making their decision.Online auctions(拍卖) are another option for students seeking a bargain. This option, however, has its pros and cons. A plus is that students can get incredibly cheap books. One problem is that while online bookstores have a system in place that ensure you receive your order within a reasonable amount of time, with an auction purchase, however, you must depend on the auction seller's timetable. One way that students can really save is by getting books for free. Project Gutenberg is one resource that English majors will find invaluable. Here students can legally download a huge collection of classic novels. In the past students needing help with their studies would often have to spend a lot of money buying expensive study guides. Today that is no longer the case. Cash-strapped students can now visit the website SparkNotes for free downloadable study guides as well as classics.31. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?A. Learning to Save on TextbooksB. Why Buy TextbooksC.Online ShoppingD. Tips for Buying Secondhand Textbooks【答案】A【解析】标题归纳题。
