These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feet—as far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch. Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology, says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless they’re eating it, or unless something is eating them.”And they are as clear as glass. How does an animal bee see-through?I t’s trickier than you might think. The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a st raight line. But some materials slow and scatter(散射)light, bouncing it away from its original path. Others absorb light, stopping it dead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make an object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily. But a transparent object doesn’t absorb of scatter light, at least not very much. Light can pass through it without bending or stopping. That means a transparent object doesn’t look very different from the surrounding air or water. You don’t see it—you see the things behindit. To bee transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments(色素)that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal do esn’t have pigments, so its tissues won’t absorb light. According to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually eas y. The real challenge is preventing light form scattering.Animals are built of many different materials—skin, fat, and more—and light moves through each at a different speed. Every time light moves into a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters. Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are simply very small or extremely flat. Without much tissue to scatter light, it is easier to be see-through. Others build a large, clear mass of non-living jelly-like(果冻状的)material and spread themselves over it.Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have to make all the different tissues in their bodies slow down light exactly as much as water does. They need to look uniform. But how they’re doing it is still unknown. One thing is clear, for these larger animals, staying transparent is an active process. When they die, they turn a nontransparent milky white.43. According to Paragraph 1, transparent animals.A. stay in groupsB. can be easily damagedC. appear only in deep oceanD. are beautiful creatures44. The underlined word “dead” in Paragraph 3 means .A. silentlyB. graduallyC. regularlyD. pletely45. One way for an animal to bee transparent is to.A. change the direction of light travelB. gather materials to scatter lightC. avoid the absorption of lightD. grow bigger to stop light46. The last paragraph tells us that l arger transparent animals .A. move more slowly in deep waterB. stay see-through even after deathC. produce more tissues for their survivalD. take effective action to reduce light spreadingDTechnological change is everywhere and affects every asp ect of life, mostly for the better. However, social changes that are brought about by new technology are often mistaken for a change in attitudes. An example at hand is the involvement of parents in the lives of their children who are attending college. Su rveys(调查)on this topic suggest that parents today continue to be “very” or “somewhat”overly-protective even after their children move into college dormitories. The same surveys also indicate that the rate of parental involvement is greater today than it w as a generation ago. This is usually interpreted as a sign that today’s parents are trying to mange their children’s lives past the point where this behavior is appropriate. However, greater parental involvement does not necessarily indicate that parents are failing to let go of their “adult” children. In the context(背景)of this discussion, it seems valuable to first find out the cause of change in the case of parent s’ involvement with their grown children. If parents of earlier generations had wanted to be in touch with their college-age children frequently, would this have been possible? Probably not. No the other hand, does the possibility of frequent munication today mean that the urge to do so wasn’t present a generation ago? Many studies show that older parents—today’s grandparents—would have called their children more often if the mans and cost of doing so had not been a barrier.Furthermore, studies show that finances are the most frequent subject of munication between parents and their college childre n. The fact that college students are financially dependent on their parents is nothing new, nor are requests for more money to be sent from home. This phenomenon is neither good nor bad; it is a fact of college life, today and in the past. Thanks to the advanced technology, we live in an age of bettered munication. This has many implication well beyond the role that parents seem to play in the lives of their children who have left for college. But it is useful to bear in mind that all such changes e from t he technology and not some imagined desire by parents to keep their children under their wings.47. The surveys inform us of.A. the development of technologyB. the changes of adult children’s behaviorC. the parent s’ over-protection of their college c hildrenD. the means and expenses of student s’ munication48. Daydreamers have a bad reputation for being unaware of what’s happening around them. They can seem forgetful and clumsy. 51 They annoy us because they seem to be ignoring us and miss ing the important things. But daydreamers are also responsible for some of the greatest ideas and achievements in human history.52 Can you imagine what kind of world we would have without such ideas and inventions? So how can you e up with brilliant day dreams and avoid falling over tree roots or otherwise looking like a fool?First, understand that some opportunities(机会)for daydreaming are better than others. Feeling safe and relaxed will help you to slip into daydreams. 53 And if you want to improve y our chances of having a creative idea while you’re daydreaming, try to do it while you are involved in another task—preferably something simple, like taking a shower or walking, or even making meaningless drawings. It’s also important to know how to avoid daydreams for those times when you really need to concentrate. “Mindfulness”, being focused, is a tool that some people use to avoid falling asleep.54 Finally, you never know what wonderful idea might strike while your mind has moved slowly away.55Always remember that your best ideas might e when your head isactually in the clouds.A. Having interesting things to think about also helps.B. They stare off into space and wander by themselves.C. Without wandering minds, we wouldn’t have relativity, Coke or Post-it notes.D. At one time, daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses.E. It involves slow, steady breathing for self-control that helps people stay calm and attentive.F. Daydreams are often very simple and direct, quite un like sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand.G. Therefore, it’s a good idea to keep a notebook or voice recorder nearby when you’re in the daydream zone.

Finally, there was only one family between the ticket office and us. This family made a big impression on me.There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children talked excitedly about the clowns. It was clearly a very important day out for them. The father and mother seemed happy as they could be.The ticket lady asked how many tickets the father wanted. He proudly answered, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adults’ tickets, so I can take my family to the circus.”The ticket lady told him the price. The man’s wife lowered her head. There was no longer a smile on the man’s face. He quietly asked, “How much did you say?”The ticket lady again told him the price. The man obviously didn’t have enough money. But how could he tell his kids the bad news?Seeing what was happening, my dad took a $20 note from his pocket and dropped in on the ground. (We were not rich ourselves at all!) He then tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, you dropped this.”The man understood my father was helping him. He picked up the money, looked straight into my dad’s eyes, and in tears replied. “Thank you. This really means a lot to me and my family.”Although we did not go to the circus that night, we didn’t go without.6.Why does the writer say “Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean” ( Paragraph 2)? This is a good piece of advice. If you go shoppingfor food before lunchtime, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers(消费者) these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store.First, you should check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items(物品) that are on sale and decide if you really need them. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s cheaper than usual! “New and Improved!” or “All Natural” on the front of a package(包装) influence you. Instead, read the list of ingredients(成分) on the back. Then compare prices, that is, you should check the prices of both different brands and different sizes of the same brand.Another suggestion for consumers is to buy common items instead of famous brands(品牌). These products are cheaper because producers don’t spend much money on packing or putting ads. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount(折扣) clothing stores can help you save a lot of money.Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials, but they do this with oneadvantage: knowledge of the psychology(心理学)behind the ads. In other words, well-informed consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the ad hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the ad, or is the ad simply showing an attractive picture? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.11.Why does the writer suggest not going into a supermarket hungry?A.Because you may buy more than you plan to.B.Because you may feel tired.C.Because you may forget to buy enough good.D.Because you may lose your way.12.Before you decide to buy things, what should you do first?A.Make sure whether they are on sale.B.Consider if you really need them.C.Check the sizes of different brands.D.Read the words on the front of the package.13.Why does the writer advise consumers to buy common items?A.They come in good packages.B.They put ads on the newspapers or TV.C.They are both good and cheaper.D.The quality is better than that of famous ones.14.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A.Ads sometimes tell lies.B.Ads hide some information.C.Good consumers never read ads.D.We should make good use of ads.15.Where do you probably read the passage?A.On a guide map.B.On a supermarket ad.C.In a science book.D.In a life magazine.DAs an English, I can speak three languages—English, German and French, so do you think the English people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren’t.Some statistics(数据) from the survey showed that 62% of the English people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more. From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe. And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That’s why my people don’t think it is necessary to learn a foreign language. In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only an option at school. In schools in the UK , it is common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don’t students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history. To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.Changing the British attitude to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to try!16.Which country does the writer come from?A.America.B.China.C.Britain.D.Australia. 17.Which of the following about the British people is true?A.They are good language learners.B.62% of them speak two or more languages.C.They are famous for speaking foreign languages.D.More than half of them only speak English.18.According to Paragraph 4, what do students in Britain like to learn?A.Science or French.B.History or French.C.Science or history.D.Chinese or French.19.What does the underlined word “option” mean in Paragraph 4?A.Choice.B.Game.C.Mistake.D.Story. 20.Which is the best title for the passage?A.Speaking English in EuropeB.Foreign Language Learning in BritainC.Schools in the UKD.Young English Learners in EnglandERaya and The Last DragonTel: 617-219-4300 Tickets InformationDates: 30th July - 8th AugustMon - Fri 10am, 7pmSat - Sun 10am, 2pm, 7pmWhere: Star CinemaHow long: 1.5 hoursTicket prices: $25 per child or adult (day shows)$35 per child or adult (evening shows)Family Packages:$85 for 4 tickets (10am, 2pm shows)$120 for 4 tickets (7pm shows)Latecomer Policy:Please arrive early. It may sound like an unusual piece of advice, but it is true—the first impression someone has of you when meeting you for the first time will probably influence(影响)how that person treats you in the future. What is even more interesting is that the brain takes in all the information to create that first impression in about three seconds. When you meet someone for the first time, by the time you have said your name or shaken hands, the other person has already formed(形成)an opinion about the kind of person you are.So how do you make a good first impression? Being polite and being well dressed is very important. However, the most important way of making a good first impression is your face. Smiling almost always leaves a positive(积极的)impression on people, especially those who do not knowyou. Most people, generally speaking, are ready to smile back when they are smiled at.What's more, smiling and being positive helps you to know and get a better understanding of new things. This means that you can possibly be friendlier to people you do not know and be more creative and able to solve problems more quickly.
