Do you remember we agreed to circulate our ideas for our school project this year? Well, here is our suggestion and we in our school hope you will join us to develop it.The idea came to us in the autumn of 2004. We were sitting in our class when our head teacher made an announcement. “There’ll be a new boy starting school tomorrow. He comes from the circus so he’ll be with us for a while.” Immediately there was wh ispering around the classroom.I heard remarks like “Those are dirty people”; “They eat raw meat”; and “Watch out for your bags”. The teacher must have heard them because she stopped the talking and said in a very serious voice: “Jake is our guest for as long as he stays here. Make sure you treat him well. I don’t want to hear any complaints about your behaviour to him.”I was curious because it was the first time I had met anyone from a circus. Fortunately for me, the next morning, after being introduced to the class he sat in the only spare seat next to me. Of course I didn’t want to be nosy(管闲事的)but I couldn’t help looking at him sideways as I began my mathematics task. I noticed Jake was smaller than me and had dirty finger nails. His shirt was clean but had been repaired in many places and his trousers were helped up by a wide, leather belt. As he seemed to have no handkerchief and was sniffing loudly, I passed him one of mine. Immediately the boys began to whisper “What did you do that for? Leave him be!” I concentrated on my work. From my left a slight movement showed that Jake must have heard the remarks too. He seemed to be having great difficulty with his work and was struggling to hold his pen correctly. He looked around as if for help. I looked around too. The teacher was busy so I leaned over and offered to explain the problems to him. As he listened his mouth split into a smile. His eyes lit up as if a light had been turned on and he returned to the exercises with enthusiasm. He finished them qu ickly and proudly presented them to the teacher. “Well done, Jake,” she approved. Jake smiled and was soon busy sorting out information and adding more of his own.I thought about how Jake’s life would be. I remembered seeing the campsite and thinking how poor the facilities (设施)were. So I decided to help. As it was my turn to suggest a project for our grade, I put forward this idea. Our head teacher accepted it and so we began to prepare our plansto improve the campsite. Hope you will join us.56. Why did the students dislike Jake even before they saw him?A. They must have heard bad stories about circus people.B. They always judged a person by what he looks like.C. The teacher hadn’t introduced Jake to them beforehand.D. A newcomer was not welcome at that time.57. What’s the author’s attitude towards Jake?A. He copied the other boys’ behavior.B. He was distant about what Jake’s life was like.C. He couldn’t ignore what other people said about Jake.D. He had sympathy for the poor and disadvantaged.58. The author mentions how Jake did maths to show that _______.A. the teacher was helpful and friendlyB. the maths problem was too hard for himC. Jake was courageous and determinedD. the author was better at maths59. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A. To argue circus people should be treated fairly.B. To ask the reader to join in their project.C. To call on more people to help Jake.D. To show what is in need for a circus.【参考答案】56—59、ADCB阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C或D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

On a clear night, the sky is a wonderful thing. Is there life out there somewhere? Is there another place like Earth where life might exist? If so, where is it? And how far away is it?Recently, the American Kepler spacecraft found "22b" , a planet about six hundred light years away. It is the first planet in a " habitable zone" outside the solar system. That means the planet orbits a star like our Sun, but it is not too close to it, nor too far away. Because of this position, scientists say Kepler22b might have water, one of the main things needed for life. The newly-discovered planet is about two and a half times larger than the Earth. It is closer to its star than we are to the Sun, but 22b's sun is smaller than ours, and doesn’t produce as much heat. Scientific instruments show the new planet could be made of gases, rocks or some kinds of liquids. The Kepler spacecraft was named in honor of Johannes Kepler, the seventeenth century German astronomer. It was designed to examine a small part of the Milky Way galaxy and search for places like the Earth. It was made to inspect over 150,000 stars and measure how bright they are. It looks to see if a star's brightness gets less over a short time. If a planet passes between Kepler and the star, it blocks out part of the light. That is what suggested to scientists that there is at least one planet orbiting the star. The instruments on Kepler show the new planet as a small, black dot moving across its sun. An important part of the Kepler experiment is on the Earth. After the spacecraft gathers information, scientists use the space telescopes on the ground.Scientists have found over 2,300 new planets since Kepler was launched. About 200 of these are about the size of the Earth. Most are much larger, but it is the new planet's distance from its star that is important. For life to possibly exist there, the planet's temperature must not be too hot or too cold.63. What can we learn about Kepler-22b?A. Water must have been existed on it.B. It takes humans about 600 years to get there.C. It is made of gases, rocks and many kinds of liquids.D. It is the first planet in outer space where life may survive.64. The Kepler spacecraft was sent into space to ______.A. show honor to Johannes KeplerB. look for Earth-like planets in the skyC. observe the changes of a star's brightnessD. measure the brightest star among 150,000 stars65. In Paragraph 5 the author mainly tells us______.A. how the Kepler system worksB. if the Kepler system sees a new planetC. how the Kepler system uses the space telescopesD. why an important part of the Kepler system remains on the Earth66. What can we infer from the passage?A. Life may exist on the new planet in another form.B. It is colder on the new planet because its sun is smaller.C. Life can't exist on planets which are much larger than the Earth.D. The new planet's distance from its star decides on the possibilitv of life existence.【参考答案】63—66\DBAD阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C或D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Finally, Ientered the university. Because of my careful savings, I did not have to work during the school year. Then, summer came and it was time to work harder than ever. I continued working as a waitress at night, instructed tennis camps several mornings a week and worked as a secretary for a few hours in the afternoons. I even decided to take a class at acommunity(社区)college. This class at the community college saved me $650. It was an extremely tiring summer and made me anxious to return to my relatively easy life at the university.During my second and third years of undergraduate schooling, I decided to work about five hours per week in the campus(校园)admissions office answering phones. This provided a little spending money and kept me from drawing my savings out. The overall situation looked hopeful as I approached my senior year as long as I could make as much money as I had the previous summer. I wanted to go to Israel to study for 3 weeks, but I hesitated in making this decision because it would cost me $1,600 more to get the credits in Israel. About two weeks later my Mom called to tell me that I had $1,600 in the bank that I had forgotten about! One of my concerns about this trip was not only the cost, but the loss of time to make money; however, I made as much that summer in the ten weeks when I was at home as I had made during the fourteen weeks when I was at home the summer before. The way everything worked together to make this trip possible was one of the most exciting things that have ever happened to me.This experience has shaped me in many important ways. The first thing that Ilearnedwas the importance of a strong work ethic (伦理). Working long hours did a lot to develop my character and helped me learn the value of adollar. It also made me learn how to search for creative ways to settle difficult situations.1. Where did the writer probably work part-time before attending the university?A. In a restaurant.B. In the tennis camps.C. In a company.D. In the admissions office.2. The writer took a class at a community college mainly because_____.A. she wanted to save moneyB. life there was relatively easyC. summer time was tiringD. it was required by the university3. The writer’s major concern about the trip to Isra el was that_____.A. her mother would not give her approvalB. she would fail to get credits in IsraelC. a well-paid summer job would be lostD. $1,600 couldn’t be drawn out in time4.
