It also can be an investment of money and commitment. Many people choose to develop more than one type of hobby. 76 When it comes to choosing the hobby, consider the following factors.Hobbies are usually an activity of some sort that brings out a certain skill that you have. When you have a talent like painting or woodworking, it can be easy to determine which hobby suits your skill. 77 Skill can be developed and challenged as you go along. It is not a necessary requirement. A hobby is fitting because you love it, not because you’re a professional at it.Some people particularly enjoy taking part in hobbies that they can do in a group with others. It can be a lot more fun to join a hobby group than to sit alone in your basement. 78 It’s important to share interests and network with other hobby enthusiasts that do what you do.Hobbies are generally an activity that you undertake because of the joy it brings you. Of course many people have discovered the joy that also comes with a hobby that earns you a living. __79 Just make sure you make the choice that fits your lifestyle and personal preference.80 But most of the skilled hobbies like art, building or writing have a series of lessons or tutorials that you can take to further your skills. In some cases it’s a really good idea to take lessons, especially if you are clueless as to where or how to begin. Step by step books for most hobbies can often be found in bookstores as well.A. Ho wever, hobbies don’t have to be skill related.B. Most hobbies can easily be done within your own home, at your leisure.C. Look one up or start your own.D. AThey are the fashion statement loved by hip hop stars and rappers. But now it seems that grilles(金属网罩)—teeth jewellery loved by rappers such as Nelly—are not just about the way you look—you can use them to listen to music, too.A design student has created a way of using the jewellery mouthpiece to hear songs by means of “bone conduction” through your skull.Aisen Chacin,of Parsons The New School for Design in New York, attached a vibrating(振动)motor to a digital music player and connected it to a mold(模子)of her upper teeth. She also placed controls on the underside so users can change songs or increase the volume by pushing up with your tongue. When the music starts, the vibration is strong enough that the music can be heard clearly—without the need for headphones. If the sound being played is loud enough, others can even hear it apparently coming out of your teeth.A video posted on YouTube shows one of Chacin's friends sitting down with the motor in his mouth and his hands in his ears.He didn't believe his eyes when he heard the music.Grilles were made popular by the song by rapper Nelly even though dentists have made warnings against them. They say jewellery materials like gold or diamonds can wear down the enamel(牙釉质)on your teeth and that grilles should not be worn.Chacin showed her device, called Play-A-Grill,at the New Interfaces for Musical Expression conference last week. She said,“Grilles are almost always made of precious metal. They are completely removable, and almost used as a grill.Because the grill is worn over the teeth, sound can be spread using bone conduction hearinginstead of outside speakers or headphones.”21.When we use the grilles,we________.A.can sing to the musicB.can change songs using tonguesC.need to attach a digital music playerD.can hear songs through the outside ears22.Grilles are different from traditional music players because''''.A.they are able to play songs and music a lot more clearlyB.they make it unnecessary for listeners to wear headphonesC.they can play the music loud without interrupting other peopleD.songs coming out of our teeth seem to be sung by ourselves23.How did one of Chacin's friends feel when he heard the music?A.He felt satisfied.B.He felt interested.C.He felt convenient. In 1966, she left the program and began living with two scientists, Allen and Beatrix Gardner, who led a project to teach the chimp American Sign Language (ASL) in Washoe, Nevada, for which it was named. Washoe had been living on Central Washington University’s Ellensburg Campus since 1980. She had a vocabulary of about 250 words. Also, Washoe taught sign language to three younger chimps: Tatu, 31, Loulis, 29, and Dar, 31Primate (灵长类) researcher Jane Goodall, in Fouts’ book Next of Kin, noted the importance of the work with Washoe. “Roger, through his ongoing conversations with Washoe and her extended family, has opened a window into a chimpanzee’s mind,” Goodall said.Though previous efforts to teach chimps spoken languages had failed, the researchers believed there was a better chance using signs. But Washoe’s language skills were disputed by scientists who believed that language is unique to humans. Among those who doubted that chimps could use language were linguist (语言学家) Noam Chomsky and Harvard scientist Steven Pinker. They believed primates simply learn to perform certain acts in order to receive rewards, and do not acquire true language. 29.As for its first task, Washoe was involved with _______.A.some space researchB.a study on African animalsC.an ASL projectD.the program of training the Air Force30.In Goodall’s opinion, teaching Washoe ASL ______.A.was not successfulB.led to the book Next of KinC.won honor for FoutsD.made a difference31.In the last paragraph, the underlined word “disputed” probably means “______”.A.supported B. studiedC.questioned D. discussed32.What can be inferred from the passage?A.The ASL project was first set up in Africa for the study on Washoe.B.Washoe may communicate with other chimps by signing.C.Washoe must have been able to speak 250 words or so.D.The researchers will prove that most chimps could use language.DA 2-mile-wide tornado tore through the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore on Monday, killing at least 51 people including 20 children, destroying entire tracts of homes and trapping two dozen school children beneath rubble.Rescue teams raced against the setting sun and worked into the darkness in search of survivors as the dangerous storm system threatened several southern Plains states with more twisters. The Oklahoma medical examiner confirmed 51 deaths including 20 children, making it the deadliest U.S.tornado since one killed 161 people in Joplin,Missouri.Area hospitals reported at least 230 people injured, including at least 45 children.Emergency crews searched the rubble of Plaza Towers Elementary School to look for two dozen missing children,Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb said. The school took a direct hit from the tornado,Lamb told CNN.Police and fire crews pulled some school children from the devastation,a KFOR television reporter said from the scene. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center provided the town with a warning 16 minutes before the tornado touched down at 3:01 p.m.local time(4:01 p.m.EDT),which is greater than the average eight to ten minutes of warning, said Keli Pirtle,a spokeswoman for the center in Norman,Oklahoma. The U.S.Federal Aviation Administration(FAA)imposed a temporary flightrestriction that allowed only relief aircraft in the area, saying it was at the request of local police who wanted quiet to search for buried survivors.Oklahoma activated the National Guard, and the U.S.Federal Emergency Management Agency activated teams to support recovery operations and coordinate responses for multiple agencies.Briarwood Elementary School, which also stood in the storm's path, was all but destroyed.On_the_first_floor,sections_of_walls_had_been_peeled_away,affording_clear_views_into_the_building,while in other areas, cars hurled by the storm winds were lodged in the walls. While the school was a wreck, nearby playground clear equipment stood undamaged, though littered with rubble.Across the street, people picked through the remains of their homes, looking for any possessions they might salvage. The number of injured as reported by several hospitals rose rapidly throughout the afternoon.33.From this passage we can infer that .A.this tornado is the most serious in history in the USAB.this tornado led to 20 school children deaths in OklahomaC.this tornado isn't the deadliest one in history in the USAD.this tornado hit entire tracts of homes and schools badly34.What does the author want to show us in the 6th paragraph?A.The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center didn't provide the exact time for people.B.The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center had warned people of the tornado ahead of time.C.The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center should warn people of the tornado ahead of eight to ten minutes.D.The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center had warned people of the tornado at 3:01 p.m.35.Why did the FAA impose a temporary flight restriction in Oklahoma?A.The weather there was not suitable for flight.B.The flights weren't allowed to pass over Oklahoma.C.People wanted quiet to search for buried survivors.D.The injured wanted quiet to have a good rest in hospitals.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Some Simple Keys to Transform Your LifeThe Power of choiceEvery one of us makes countless choices every day. Every choice we make has an impact on our lives. 71 When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. The more important the decision, the greater its effect. For instance, how d01 act towards that person who treated me badly? Do I generally choose to be passive, or do I actively set clear intentions and create what l want in my life? Every choice we make, however big or small, affects us in some way.72If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for those around you. This foundation is to choose based on what's best for all. Imagine a world where every parent, friend, teacher, business person, and politician truly did their best to choose what's best for all involved in every decision they made. We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world. It's the intention.73 The answer is simple. It doesn't matter. The matter itself is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice. The key is that what decision you make. You are clear in your intention of choosing based on what's best for all. If it later turns out that you seem to have made a bad choice, there's no need for guilt. Knowing that you did your best to choose with a sincere desire for what's best for all, your conscience stays clear and open. 74 What's best for me, too!Choosing what's best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for others. Another example ,a very exhausted mother can lose her temper easily and then she may become ill so that she can't support her family without earning any money. 75 So as we move through eachday of our lives, let us learn to care about ourselves as we do our best to choose what's best for others.A. How do you make choices?B. Discuss them together to choose your project.C. But how do I know what is really best?D. What is important is that we should pay attention to this presence.E. So it is very important for you to take good care of yourself.F. Even small or unimportant choices can affect what we experience and how we feel.G. This then allows you to improve your decision, and make a right one.【参考答案】71—75\FACGE【2014高考英语河南省洛阳市统考】(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

I live in Japan, where electronic items are a way of life, so it is no surprise that many students carry these little electronic dictionaries. 61. ______________While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people know how to keep them for as long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple facts. The key to keeping fresh cut flower for a week or more without preservatives ( which contain biocides (杀虫剂) that kill bacterial and fungus) is to keep the water fresh and the stems free of air pockets so they can continue to draw up water. 62. ______________An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensitive to temperature. For example, studies have shown that cut carnations retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12℃ than when kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowered at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care.63. ______________The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, called respiration (呼吸), supplies the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shapeand color. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all living things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies.64. ______________How, then, to control the speed at which flowers die? By controlling respiration. How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature, we know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse ( 反面 ) is also true. Thus by keeping low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly.65. ______________Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to “drink” water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of these unwanted substances, chlorine bleach ( 含氯漂白剂 ) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach be added to each liter of water. The water and solution (溶液)should also be replaced each day.【参考答案】61-65 BDCAE阅读理解。

Once kids hit the teenage years, parenting becomes more difficult than ever. Establishing effective house rules is one of the best ways to educate teenagers. House rules must respect teenagers’ desire to be independent and make sure they behave responsibly. How can effective house rules be established?First of all, get your teenager to take part in making the rules, which can help keep them motivated to follow them. Ask their opinion about what sorts of things they think are important when creating the rules and try to include some of their ideas. When creating the list of rules, don’t list every single rule imaginable. Instead, tr y to limit it to the ten most important rules. I’ve seen some parents come up with several pages of rules which turn out to be more like a rule book rather than a list. Remember, it is important to make the list easy to remember and to be a basic guide. Then, it is important that you write out the list of rules and hang them in a prominent (显眼的) location. Keeping the rules on the refrigerator or displayed somewhere where everyone can see them is a good reminder. Revise the rules whenever there’s a need, not very frequently though.Explain clearly in advance what negative consequences will be in store when a rule gets broken. But ensure that none of your consequences are equal to abusive parenting. For example, take off the rule that says —“if you don’t get home by 11 at night, make arrangeme nts to stay elsewhere until morning”. Let helping with small household chores like cleaning up their own rooms serve as consequences for disobeying rules.Following these tips on establishing effective house rules accompanied by constant positive reinforcement (执行) will help improve your teenager’s behavior. Art is an important part of education, not only on its own but in the rest of education as well. However, in this information age, advanced technology in school has gained more attention than art. Sometimes when the school has a tight budget, it is usually art rather than technology that becomes the first thing to be cut.Anyway, the significance of art can't be ignored. First of all, in school it can help students develop a variety of life skills such as communication skills, problem solving skills and self- expression skills. Secondly, for high school students, those who arc involved in arts classes can have higher test scores. Besides, for some students, art seems to be motivation for coming to school because it’s a subject that they can outshine, which eventually balances their educational experience.New technology surely offers many benefits to some aspects of education, making teaching and learning easier and more effective. For example, technology simplifies tasks that take much longer to do, like conducting research or finding information. But advanced technology has bad effects such as the risk of being overweight, tiredness and even potential mental health problems, while art doesn't. On the other hand, unlike art, no technology can develop students' critical (批判的) thinking skills and a creative mind, both of which can help them to find successful careers after they graduate. Furthermore, no technology can help students to learn to bear responsibility, develop their imagination and increase their confidence.Generally, art should not be replaced with advanced technology in schools and the last thing to be cut out of school curriculum.【参考答案】任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)76. replace 77. attention 78. significant/ important 79. various80. motivation 81. creativity82. responsibility 83. confident 84. Everyone has dreams and they obey the rules that if you can dream it, you can achieve it! Here are four goals for people to reach a perfect life in their future. The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pains and illnesses. Today, with the incredible advances in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan, is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing! The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships--- intimate, personal or social--- with the people we like and respect, and who like and respect us in turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like, love and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor. The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and elevated faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, whatever you do.The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have to worry about money again. You want to completely be free of financial worries. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price listings to determine what you want to eat.51.What does this passage chiefly talk about? To see whether the system could improve air quality, a team of researchers led by Constantinos Sioutas, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Southern California, placed two airqu ality monitors inside the church for a year to collect samples from around painting. Results showed the levels of fine and coarse particulates were reduced near the painting by 88 percent and 94 percent, respectively, compared with the corresponding outdoor levels. “It's a spectacular reduction,”Sioutas said in a statement. “It is, frankly, very impressive.”Although the researchers applauded the successful decrease in particulates around da Vinci's painting, they warned that indoor sources of pollution may still pose a threat to the priceless painting. Fatty lipids (油脂) from the skin of customers in the church appeared in significant quantities around the painting, despite the fact that visitors getting access to the artwork are strictly regulated.Only a few visitors are allowed inside the church at a time, and they enter the building and can stay for only 15 minutes each. However, fatty lipids from visitors' skin can combine with dust in the air and pollute the painting if they come in contact with it, says study researcher Nancy Daher of the University of Southern California. Even previous restorations of the painting may pollute its surface, Daher said. Tiny particulates of the wax applied during early repair efforts can be emitted from the painting, get into the air and tarnish (使失去光泽) the painting in the same manner as the fatty lipids. The researchers noted that their airsample analysis could be used as a point of reference for future studies aimed at protecting valuable artwor k and artefacts. 1.What does the underlined word “particulates” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.The smallest parts of a chemical substance.B.Things dirtier than usual.C.Certain types of gas.D.Extremely small pieces of dirt, which cause serious pollution.2.According to the text, the following factors pollute the painting EXCEPT________.A.fatty lipids from the skin B.tiny particles of the waxC.breath of the visitors D.dust in the air3.According to the researchers, which of the following is NOT true of thei r airsample analysis?A. The airsample analysis was got by gathering air in the church for a year. B.The airsample analysis showed that the painting was completely away from air pollution.C.The airsample analysis can be helpful for future studies protecting valuable artwork.D.The airsample analysis showed that the particulates around da Vinci's painting were decreased successfully.4.What can be the best title of the text?A.How to decrease levels of particulates effectivelyB.The famous painting —da Vinci's The Last SupperC.Keeping air pollution from damaging da Vinci's The Last SupperD.How to protect artwork in households【要点综述】保存在意大利米兰市一家教堂的达·芬奇名画《最后的晚餐》受到空气污染的影响。
