2017-2018学年高中英语(人教版)必修五Unit 3 life in the future reading课时作业 (1)

Unit 3 life in the future reading课时作业Ⅰ.阅读理解AMy mom takes pride in the fact that I was talking in three and four word sentences before I was ten months old. Some say it’s a gift while others simply think I talk too much.As my thirties came to a close, I found myself reflecting on my life. I’m very happy and have no significant sadness or disappointment. However, when I looked back on those times of difficulty, I saw a clear common denominator(特征): I didn’t seem to know when to stop talking. Whether it was hurting someone’s feelings, or having carelessly told a secret, the incident could have been avoided, had I closed my mouth sooner. So I decided to practice the power of quiet. To take this step, I needed to understand how people could sit comfortably in a group and not talk. Why does my husband feel completely content to say nothing in a conversation? He’s highly intelligent and has wonderful opinions but he’ll sit quietly and just listen. Even when he’s asked a pointed question, he’ll answer with few words while still communicating effectively. What a talent! Can you imagine being happy just listening? In surveying those I know who talk less than I do, I got two answers—they either didn’t feel confident enough to speak up, or they just didn’t feel the need to participate in the conversation. Of course there were other reasons for not talking, but these were the two most popular answers. The first one didn’t work for me. I’m just fin e letting people know what I think about them, and hopefully it will make the conversation much more interesting. The second one didn’t work either. I do feel the need to participate. I feel it physically like an electrical pulse through my body; sometimes it’s so strong that it causes me to behave badly in the form of interrupting or speaking in an unusually loud voice. I had to look further. An interesting thing happened on this journey to the power of quiet. During my weekly yoga class, it came to me like an answer so clear that the words rang in my head like soft, heavenly bells.I talked too much so people would know I cared about them. It was my way of taking care of those I love. I decided before my fortieth birthday, that from that day forward, those around me would know I loved them, and cared what they thought and felt, but I was going to practice the power of quiet. As my forty-second birthday comes close, I can say that deciding to talk less has been more about centering on quality rather than quantity. I’ve found that listening more shows those who I care about that I really do care how they feel. Now when I break in, it means more to them. Oh, sure, I still have my short periods of talking too much, but for the most part this has been one resolution that I can call a success.1. The writer was determined to practice the power of quiet because of ______.A.other people’s criticismsB.her reflections on her past lifeC.her mother’s adviceD.her age2. In Paragraph 3 the writer mentions her husband mainly ______.A.to show how one communicates effectivelyB.to explain the reason for his silence in a conversationC.to give her high opinion of his communication skillsD.to give an example of those who have the power of quiet3. By “I had to look further”, the writer means she had to ______.A.look into the future in order to succeed in practicing the power of quietB.try harder to prevent herself from talking too muchC.find out other reasons why she should talk lessD.survey people in other areas who talk littleBThink about vitamin D when you’re catching up on summer rays. It’s sometimes called the “sunshine vitamin” because it’s produced in your skin in response to sunlight. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble (脂溶性的) vitamin in a family of compounds that includes vitamins D-1, D-2, and D-3. It can affect as many as 2,000 genes in the body.Vitamin D has several important functions. Perhaps the most vital are regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorous(磷), and promoting normal immune system function. Getting enough vitamin D is important for normal growth and development of bones and teeth, as well as improving resistance against certain diseases. In addition to its primary benefits, research suggests that vitamin D may also play a role in: ● reducing your risk of multiple sclerosis(多发性硬化), according to a 2006 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association● decreasing your chance of developing heart disease, according to 2008 findings published in Circulation● he lping to reduce your possibility of developing the flu, according to 2010 research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition● regulating mood and warding off depression● losing weight or preventing heart diseaseHow do you get it? Your body produces vitamin D naturally when it is directly exposed to sunlight. A little can go a long way. All you need is 10 minutes a day of midday, pre-sunscreen sun exposure, especially if you have fair skin. Besides getting vitamin D through sunlight, you can also get it through certain foods and supplements to ensure adequate levels of the vitamin in your blood.4. Why is Vitamin D sometimes called “Sunshine Vitamin”?A.Because it is produced in your skin reacting to sunlight.B.Because it is named a fat-soluble vitamin.C.Because it is produced with enough sunshine.D.Because it is like sunshine in summer.5. How can a person ensure enough Vitamin D in his/ her body?A.He/ She could ask doctors for help.B.He/ She should walk a long way in the sunlight.C.He/ She should be exposed to sunlight for a long time.D.He/ She should get it through sunlight, foods and supplements.6. Which of the following is NOT the function of Vitamin D?A.Preventing heart disease.B.Helping the body grow normally.C.Producing calcium and phosphorous.D.Decreasing anxiety and nervousness.7. But those devices have been firstly designed to help those with disabilities, and are very expensive.“After a while, we figured out that probably the best way is to go for a mass-market way,”says Gaze's Sune Alstrup Johansen. “Where everybody would have this available. ”Johansen and some of his colleagues have formed a new company, the Eye Tribe, which is hoping to develop the technology on a mass commercial level. The technology works with the help of the computing device toward the user's face. After making sure of the user's eye movements, the technology is then able to easily find where a person's eyes are moving, and then allow the eyes to control a cursor(光标).“Our software can then determine the location of the eyes and know where you're loo king on the screen to make sure what you're looking at, ”reads an explanation on the Eye Tribe site. There has been a gradual change toward hands-free technology in recent years, particularly in the gaming (电玩游戏)world. Recently Xbox released (发布) the Kinect device, which lets users control their Xbox and play certain games using only their hands, legs and voices. But still, most of these devices have been more of a gimmick than a practical way to use one's hands to control a mobile device. Johansen said a replaceable filter(滤光器) would be a cheap, convenient way for most consumers. And even as companies like The Eye Tribe work to create such a product for the average user, making the eye-controlled technology more available and less expensive will have similar benefits for physically disabled users. For more articles on modern science, please CLICK here.文章大意:这篇短文主要介绍了未来社会的一种科技发明,用眼睛操作手机或者电脑。
