Sociology ResearchAs globalization continues to shape our world, it is crucial to understand and analyze the dynamics of society. Sociological research plays a vital role in uncovering patterns, examining social issues, and providing insights into human behavior. In this article, we will explore the importance of sociology research and discuss its implications on various aspects of our lives.1. IntroductionSociology research encompasses a wide range of studies that aim to investigate social phenomena, including social interactions, institutions, and structures. Researchers in this field employ various methodologies, such as surveys, interviews, observations, and experiments, to gather data and draw conclusions. The findings of these studies contribute to our understanding of society and inform policies and interventions.2. Importance of Sociology ResearchSociological research is instrumental in identifying and addressing social issues. By examining various aspects of society, researchers can shed light on inequalities, discrimination, and social injustice. For example, studies on educational disparities can reveal the factors influencing academic success and inform strategies to enhance equal opportunities for students from different backgrounds.3. Research Methods in SociologySociology research adopts both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate social phenomena. Quantitative research involves collecting numerical data that can be analyzed statistically. Surveys and experiments are commonly used to gather such data. On the other hand, qualitative research focuses on understanding social behavior through in-depth interviews, observations, and textual analysis. This approach provides rich, descriptive data that delves into the subjective experiences and meanings attached to social phenomena.4. Applications of Sociology ResearchSociology research has implications in various sectors, including education, healthcare, criminal justice, and policymaking. By understanding social structures and processes, policymakers can develop effective interventions and programs to address social issues. For instance, studies on the impact of poverty on children's well-being can guide the development of social welfare policies and programs.5. Ethical Considerations in Sociology ResearchEthics play a crucial role in sociology research to ensure the well-being and rights of participants. Researchers must obtain informed consent from participants and maintain confidentiality to protect their identities. Additionally, they should minimize harm and respect the principles of justice throughout the research process.6. Peer Review and PublicationIn the field of sociology, research findings undergo a rigorous peer review process before they are accepted for publication in academic journals. This process ensures the quality and credibility of the research. Peer-reviewed articles contribute to the advancement of sociological knowledge and provide a platform for scholars to engage in meaningful academic discourse.7. Citation and Referencing in SociologyWhen citing sources in sociology research, it is essential to use a consistent and standardized referencing style. The American Sociological Association (ASA) style is commonly used in sociology research papers. It includes in-text citations within the text and a reference list at the end of the document. Adhering to a specific citation style helps maintain academic integrity and allows readers to trace the sources of information.8. Impact of Sociology ResearchSociology research has a significant impact beyond academic circles. Findings from sociological studies influence public opinion and policy decisions. For example, research on the effects of social media on mental health can shape guidelines and regulations concerning online platforms. Additionally, sociological research can challenge existing societal norms and contribute to social change and transformation.ConclusionAs society becomes increasingly complex, sociology research provides valuable insights into our social world. By examining social interactions, structures, and institutions, sociologists help us understand the forces that shape our lives. Through rigorous methodologies and ethical considerations, sociology research continues to contribute to social progress and the betterment of our communities.。

Qualitative Research

Qualitative Research

Case study
A study that examines one or more cases in detail by using multiple sources of data. 通过对个案展开深入、详尽的研究来探索个案所属的群体的 特征和特点.
Action study It can be conducted with the assistance of professional researchers in order to improve strategies, practices and knowledge of the environment within which the practice. Phenomenology The research identifies the “essence” of human experiences concerning a phenomenon, as described by participants in a study.
Qualitative Data Analysis
Data analysis in qualitative research is an on-going process involving continual reflection about the data, asking analytic questions, and writing memos throughout the study. It is not sharply divided from the other activities in the process, such as collecting data or formulating research questions. It involves using open-ended data, for the most part. This requires asking general questions and developing an analysis from the information supplied by participants.

quantitativeresearchandqualitativeresearch

quantitativeresearchandqualitativeresearch

1.Discuss the difference between quantitative research and qualitativeresearch.Though the process is broadly the same in qualitative research and quantitative research (Ranjit, 2011), there are some differences between them. First, the approach to enquiry of quantitative research is structured, rigid and predetermined methodology, while the qualitative research uses unstructured, flexible and open methodology. Second, the main aim of quantitative research is to classify features, count them and construct statistical models in an attempt to explain what is observed, but doing qualitative research is to completely describe the variation. Third, quantitative research is recommended during latter phases of research projects, and researcher knows clearly in advance what he is looking for;by comparison, qualitative research is recommended during earlier phases of research projects, and the researcher may only know roughly in advance what he is looking for. Fourth, data of quantitative research, which is the form of numbers and statistics, is more efficient, able to test hypotheses, but may miss contextual details, and researcher uses questionnaires or equipment to collect numerical data; in comparing data of qualitative research, which is in the form of words, pictures or objects, is rich, time consuming, and less able to be generalize. In addition, researcher is the data gathering instrument. Fifth, the quantitative researcher, who often uses surveys or questionnaires, tends to remain objectively separated from the subject matter. But the qualitative researcher, who always uses participant observation and in-depth interview, tends to become subjectively immersed in subject matter.2.Highlight the weakness of both approaches.Although quantitative research and qualitative research are applied widely, both of them have weaknesses. In term of quantitative research, first, lager samples are required, as a result, it is easy to make statistical error and undermine the accuracy or validity of a quantitative.Second, the researcher might miss phenomena occurring and contextual details because of the focus on the theory or hypothesis testing ratherthan on theory or hypothesis generation. Third, the data is just in the form of numbers and statistics. As Fred said, there is no such thing as quantitative data. Everything is either 1 or 0 (Miles & Huberman, 1994).On the other hand, in term to qualitative research, first, it is difficult to make quantitative predictions; as a result, it is difficult to test hypotheses and theories with large participant pools. Second, it might have lower credibility with studying fewer causes. Besides the reliability of qualitative research is weakened by that fact that the process is under-standardized and relies on the insights and the abilities of the observer (Duffy, 1985). Third, it generally takes more time to analyze the data when compared to quantitative research. Fourth, the results are more easily influenced by the research’s personal biases, because the analysis is subjective and small sample size is dealt with.3.Provide suggestions to overcome those weaknesses.Doing mixed research combining the quantitative research and qualitative research can overcome those weaknesses when using one’s strengths to overcome the other weaknesses. For instance, words and pictures can be used to add meaning to numbers, and numbers can be used to add precision to words and pictures. As a result, the data would be more efficient, able to test hypotheses, involve contextual details and able to be generalized, which makes contribution to obtain higher credibility. As both approach have strengths and weaknesses, “neither one is markedly superior to the other in all respects” (Ackroyd & Hughes, 1992). In many studies, combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches is needed.。

Qualitative research on the factors behind individuals’ investment decision-making in UK1.IntroductionIt is not unusual to see that an increasing number of people have became the owner of investment products currently under the influence of booming financial industry. However, the changeable financial world can not only bring about a possible income but also a potential loss, what we called the “risk”, especially after the breakout of financial crisis in 2008, the capital holders, both organizations and individuals, have a tendency to be more prudential and rigorous in making their investment decisions, i.e. how, when, where and how much they put their money into different financial options (e.g. stocks, futures, securities, options, real asset etc.).1.1 Problem statementWhat this paper actually cares about is the process of individuals’ i nvestment decision-making, hence, the nature of this study is based on the research of questions below:(1)what factors have the prominent impact on people’s financi al performance?(2)What criteria people rely on in terms of choosing a certain financial asset? In order to find out a variety of determinants behind individuals’ investment behavior and therefore, make the financial market more effective and efficient (the relationship between investment behavior and financial market performance will be discussed below), this study has applied a mixed up method, including semi-structured and open-ended interviews, surveys and text-based study to conduct a investigation.1.2 Significance of this study“All the investors are rational” and “EMH” are two of the famous assumptions in economic market. Under these assumptions, scholars can analysis all the financial situations mathematically and predict the future market tendency in certain models ( e.g. CAMP, APT, SML). However, admittedly, not all the investors, both individually and in group, are rational, which means the predictability of their market behaviors cannot be relied on quantitative models completely. According to H. kent Baker and John Nofsinger, long-term biased irrational investors’ behavior will lead to disposition effect and market inefficiency and therefore, widen the wedge betweenmarket prices and fundamental values(H. Kent Baker 2010). While lasting systematic mispricing will bring about massive resource( e.g. capital, HR, time) misallocation(Daniel et al., 2002), which has a detrimental influence on capital market, so an increasing number of economists have put their focus on discovering the factors behind financial behavior, especially after John D. Watson produced the conception of “behaviorism” in 1913. It is no exaggeration to say that research on the leading factors of people’s financial behavior is the key point to realize market-efficiency and utility-maximization as much as possible.1.3 Essay structureThis essay is structured as follows. The first part introduces relevant studies on how people conduct their decision-making in financial issues and some scholars’ research method. Secondly, a comparison will be made between different qualitative method and present reasons why this paper choose interview and archival. The third part focuses on the specific research conduction. Finally, a conclusion and limitation of this study are included.2. Literature reviewStudies on individuals’ investment decision-making are not rare, but the majority of them focus on a narrow field in terms of influencing factors. Elisa Gambetti and Fiorella Giusberti aims to investigate the extent to which people make their financial decision only on the basis of trait anger and anxiety (Gambetti and Giusberti, 2012), which shows that anger is positively associated with the willingness to invest money in stocks while anxiety has the opposite effect. Hui-Chu Shu then expanded the study into the l inkage between investors’ mood, including anxiety, anger, happy, sad etc. and investing choice(Shu, 2010). Kent Daniel and his partners have conducted their study on how psychological biases affect investor behavior and prices without the consideration of external causes(Daniel et al., 2002). Jeffrey Wurgler also has done the similar research on psychological factors in terms of capital market choice(Wurgler, 2002). But as we all know, the cause of individuals’ financial choice covers a wide range of variables (e.g. personal physical characters, private special life experience, living and working environment…), so a partial analysis of leading factors is inevitably induce various negative biases.Apart from the limitation of determinants, the resting discoveries focus theirattention on one certain kind of investment, which have decreased their own applicability greatly. The study of Torsti Rantapuska’s and Outi Ihanainen’s identifies how the managers in SMEs use knowledge to make ICT investment decision(Rantapuska and Ihanainen, 2008). Xuejun ZHANG has conducted the research on rural householders’ decision-making on high education investment(Xuejun, 2010).Additionally, all the researchers’ studying methods vary from person to person. Some of them use quantitative methodologies (Gambetti and Giusberti, 2012, Barnea et al., 2010, Grinblatt and Keloharju, 2000, Dorn and Huberman, 2005), while some use qualitative methods(Rantapuska and Ihanainen, 2008, ANNA KOROMBEI, 2011, Kengatharan and Kengatharan, 2014, Bowyer and Davis, 2012). Naturally, there are also a part of them apply a mix up of both of them((Stieve and Schoen, 2006, Malina et al., 2011).As for the research outcome, the result of Kengatharan ’s investigation shows that four factors( herding, heuristic, propect and market) affecting investors’ financial performance (Kengatharan and Kengatharan, 2014)3. Comparison between different qualitative methodsMcKinley has ever pointed out that qualitative methodology is the most suitable and applicable one when the nature of research objects is associated with socio-political-economic relationship(McKinley, 1995). Indeed, sometimes simple characteristics based analysis is more effective and unbiased compared to complicated econometric models and quantitative software packages on condition that the research process is designed properly. Moreover, Thorpe identified that statistical generalization does not offer guidelines for case study research (Thorpe Richard, 2008). Hence, in order to choose the optimal research method for this paper’s topic, a comparison between four different qualitative methods is being made below to show their respective advantages, disadvantages as well as suitableness.T able 1: Comparison between four qualitative methods4567Obviously, in this paper, ethnography is not desirable for its infeasibility. On the one hand, our topic focus on the individuals who are defined as “investors”, which refers to almost all the capital holders, not a certain group of people. It is unrealistic to be a member of them due to the research objects’ university . On the other hand, capital issue is relative private and should not be disclosed to “invaders”, so the access is not easy to get. Therefore, what this study use is the combination of interview, survey and text based methodology.4. Methodology4.1 The text-based studyThrough the study of H. Kent Baker (2010) book Behavioral Finance : investors, corporations, and markets and som e other scholars’ study( listed below) there are four main factors behind individuals’ invest behavior: heuristics, biases, framing effect, emotion.Heuristics: it often refers to the rule of thumb, are means of reducing the research necessary to find a solution to a problem. It could be divided into four branches: representativeness, availability, anchoring and effect. Generally, it describes the decision-making process that people actually undertake, incorporating emotional factors as well as cognitive process(Ritter, 2003, Kahneman, 1974, Waweru, 2008). Bias:Lewis (1999)notes that reducing familiarity bias could lead to greater financial market integration. Pungulescu (2008)also finds that countries with lower rates of bias have higher rates of economic growth. So bias is a crucial item concerning behavioral finance, which can be divided into 5 categories: familiarity bias, limited attention, inertia, self-deception and affect.Framing effect: it is rooted in Prospect Theory, which is developed by Kahneman (1979)andTversky (1981), providing better descriptions of choice behavior than conventional models. It refers to the fact that people’s sensitivity to “loss” is higher than to “gain”.Emotion: many scholars’ researches in psychology document h ow emotions and moods affect behavior ( e.g.Schwarz (1996), Keynes (1936)).In my text-based study, it is generalized that weather, season and mood are the main determinants of individuals’ emotion.4.2 Data collectingThe collected data is supposed to include three parts: basic personal information, assumed scenarios selection and the factors influencing financial choice . The first two part will be finished in the interview and the third one will be conducted in the survey section。
