I believe in the rule of law, it’s supposed to difficult to invade somebody’s privacyIf we can, if we don’t have our right to privacy, how do we have a free and open discussion. What good is the right to free speech if it’s not protected, in the sense that you can’t have a private discussion, with somebody else about something you disagree with. Thing about the chilling effect that has. Think about the chilling effect it does have on countries that don’t have a right to privacy.I’ve noticed a really interesting discussion point which is that what people used to call liberty and freedom, we now call it privacy. And we say, in the same breath the privacy is dead. This is something that really concerns me about my generation, especially when we talk about how we are not surprised by anything. I think that we should consider that when we lose privacy, we lose agency, we lose liberty itself because we no longer feel free to express what we think.What is surveillance? Is that control?You can have children from one part of the world having an equal discussion where they were sort of granted, the same respect, for their ideas in conversation with experts in the field from another part of the world on any topic, anywhere, anytime, all of the time. It was free and unrestrained. And we’ve seen the chilling of that, the calling of that, the change of that model towards something which people self-police their own views. And they literally make jokes about ending up on the list. Victims of societyThe age of innocence is more than a traditional love triangle. In this novel, Newland Archer, May Welland and Ellen Olenska all live uncomfortably because society is the domain of the values. To defy the social ethic is to disturb the foundations’ of society and to threaten those values. The novel is a description of the struggle between the individual and the society because of the change as a society moves from a familiar, traditional culture to one that is less formal and allows people to get greater freedom.We can see many characters' struggle against this old-fashioned and traditional community as the society changed. Ellen has fled her unhappy marriage to redeem her dignity and fought for her freedom. She is a free spirit who helps Newland Archer see through the New York society. She attends parties with disreputable people such as Julius Beaufort and Mrs. Lemuel Struthers. Finally, New York City invited her as a foreign visitor to a party as to privately send her to Europe. We can see from the novel. “As his glance travelled from one placid well-fed face to another he saw all the harmless-looking people engaged upon May’s canvas-backs as a band of dumb conspirators, and himself and the pale woman on his right as the centre of their conspiracy.”As May pretends that she doesn't know about Newland's passionate feelings for Ellen. We learn after May’s death that she knew the entire time that Newland and Ellen loved each other and how Newland sacrificed his happiness to keep everyone’s reputation. And Newland also struggle against the society. He sees the sexual inequality of New York society and the shallowness of its customs. And he shows his love for Ellen: first following her to Skuytercliff, then Boston, and finally willing to follow her to Europe. But at last, he still surrenders to the community. It could be said that May and Ellen represents two sides of Newland Archer—both are people he is afraid to become. If he is like May, he experiences death of the mind, death of the soul, and becomes what he is expected to be to keep the foundations of the society steady and strong. If he becomes like Ellen, he will lose everything that he has built his own foundations on. In the end, he is neither, nor is he himself. Hisbecame victim of a society he need but cannot survive. So, compared with Ellen, he is less courageous in love and fighting for freedom. We can notice this from the dialogue when Newland tries to dissuade Ellen from divorcing. Ellen is brave enough to pursue her freedom, while Archer fears that she will be condemned by the society.All in all, I feel pity for May, Newland and Ellen, for their tragedy of love. They are all victims of their society which has a strict, rigid code of social custom. But this tragedy might be inevitable in today's society when we considered the balance between passion and duty. Nowadays, many people may still think that the one they marry is not the one that they love most. Because of the rigid code of society, victims of society spread across the world.。

直到最后的那几个自然段，我才领悟到：原来在那些我看来枯燥无味的对人物/杂物的描写中；在舞台感过强的场景变化中；在我意识时而集中时而放松的阅读过程中，到最后的最后才知道原来我已经无声无息地共同度过了那个纯真年代。
文中的阿切尔就是生活在当年那个古董般的纽约上层社会——这个巨大的金鱼缸中。
他爱着未婚妻梅，然而或许这种爱的成分更多地是参杂了单纯的喜欢，一直等到奥兰斯卡夫人的出现才真正打开了他那颗心扉。
