Yet cars remain animportant option for many families because of its convenience. For people in rural areas, or with mobility problems, a car can bean essential lifeline.Drive with styleNo matter what kind of car you run, the least reliable part will be you: your driving style has a massive impact on the fuel needed, with acceleration, gear-changing and braking all playing a significant role.Inching along at the pace of a child‘s tricycle might feel frugal but won‘t magically yield peak economy. In most modern cars, accelerate normally, changing up at 2,000rpm in a diesel, or 2,500rpm in a petrol-powered car. Once at a sensible steady speed, choose the highest gear that will let the engine run without labouring.A number of eco-driving apps are available for smartphones, to help you improve your smoothness. The A Glass of Water iPhone app offers tips to help you avoid spilling a drop. The free RAC Traffic app is also a great way to avoid wasting fuel in traffic jams. It‘s also important to:● Check tyre pressures once a month.● Leave junk at home. Carrying extra weight in the boot wastes excess fuel.● Leave in good time and don‘t speed. An extra 10mph on the motorway will add 10% to your fuel bill.Power playsIt may be decades before alternative fuels such as hydrogen become commonplace, but hybrid cars that use battery power to boost a petrol or diesel engine are already available in every category. It means many families might find an electric vehicle ideal as a second car.Sell your wheels, still travel by carIf you need a car for short periods, such as shopping, and live in a city, then consider a short-term car-hire service such as Zipcar instead of owning a car. If you‘re travelling longer distance s, pay your share of the fuel costs to someone who‘s already driving there.70. What can you infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?A. Choosing a fuel-saving car matters more than your driving style.B. Your driving style matters most to the fuel needed.C. You should rely on yourself to drive a car.D.

在古人那儿,登高眺远,_____②____。

Then I found that my mother was not the best teacher for me. It wasn't that she shouted, or told me that I was doing poorly. As you can imagine, my mother's "helpful instructions" only managed to make me more nervous.Since I could no longer practice with her, the job was placed in the hands of my father. The idea of learning from Dad was not one that thrilled me. I loved him dearly, but I just did not see Dad as someone I could be comfortable learning from. He almost never talked. We shared a typical father-daughter relationship. He'd ask how school was, and I'd say it was fine. Unfortunately, that was the most of our conversations. Spending hours alone with someone who might as well have been a stranger really scared me.As we got into the car that first time, I was not surprised at what happened. Dad and I drove around, saying almost nothing, aside from a few instructions on how to turn. As my lessons went on, however, things began to change. Dad would turn the radio up so I could fully appreciate his favorite Stones music. And he actually began talking. I was soon hearing about past failed dates, "basic body" gym class, and other tales from his past, including some of his first meeting with Mom.Dad' s sudden chattiness was shocking until I thought about why he was telling me so much in the car. In all the years that I had wondered why my father never spoke that much, I had never stopped to consider that it was because I had never bothered to listen. Homework, friends, and even TV had all called me away from him, and, consequently, I never thought my quiet father had anything to say.Since I began driving with him, my driving skill has greatly increased. More important, though, is that my knowledge of who my father is has also increased. Just living with him wasn't enough—it took driving with him for me to get to know someone who was a mystery.59. The author couldn't practice driving with her mother because .A. she couldn't talk with her motherB. her father wanted to teach herC. her mother made her nervousD. she didn't trust her mother60. I had an urge to speak to someone on the street to share that beauty, but it seemed everyone was in a hurry.I took the next-best action. Quickly I ducked into a department store and asked the lady behind the counter if she could come outside for just a minute. She looked at me as though I were from some other planet. She hesitated, and then seemingly against her better judgment, she moved toward the door. When she got outside I said to her, “Just look at that sunset! Nobody out here was looking at it and I just had to share it with someone.”For a few seconds we just looked. The n I said, “God is in his heaven and all is right with the world.” I thanked her for coming out to see it; she went back inside and I left. It felt good to share the beauty.Four years later my situation changed greatly. I came to the end of a twenty-year marriage. I was alone and on my own for the first time in my life. I lived in a trailer park which, at the time, I considered a real come-down, and I had to do my wash in the community laundry room. One day, while my clothes were going around, I picked up a magazine and read an article about a woman who had been in similar circumstances. She had come to the end of a marriage, moved to a strange community, and the only job she could find was one she disliked: clothingsales in a department store. Then something that happened to her changed everything. She said a woman came into her department store and asked her to step outside to look at a sunset. No one knows! According to Johnny himself,it was easy:he just went into the airport, walked along some passages and got on board the nearest plane. In spite of all this,Johnny did well at school. He enjoyed mathematics and languages and, perhaps not surprisingly,he was especially good at geography.“What do you want to be when you grow u p?” his teachers asked him.“An explorer!” he answered.“But it,s difficult to become an explorer in this modern age,”they tried to tell him.But it was no use:Johnny knew what hewanted!Just before he left school,Johnny saw a notice in a daily paper.A long journey was about to go to Brazil to travel up the Amazon River. There were jobs for three young people“willing to work hard and with a sense of adventure”.Johnny applied, and two months later,he was on his way to Brazil.56.Johnny frequently left home becauseA.he preferred to stay alone B.he enjoyed seeing new placesC.he couldn’t do well at school D.he didn’t get along well with his parents 57.People around JohnnyA.tried to stop him froIli slipping away B.kept following him to get him back C.booked tickets for him if necessary D.were clear about how he travelled abroad 58.From the passage,we can learn thatA.Johnny worked for a daily paperB.Johnny lacked a sense of adventureC.Johnny went exploring along the Amazon RiverD.Johnny went to Brazil two months after he finished schoolBEditor Henry Slocum,I read your May 10th article in the local newspaper Honesdale Times about electronic books,or e-books,with great interest. You made several good points about the disadvantages of e-books.You may have overlooked, however, some of the ways in which they are superior to traditional books.Yes,e-books are expensive, but they are also convenient. In addition, due to their environment-friendly nature, e-books have the potential to change our planet for the better.E-books, for anyone who is unfamiliar with the term, are about the same size and shape as regular books. They have a large screen in the middle, however. This screen shows the reader a page of text that has been downloaded from a computer.Once the reader has finished reading the page on the e-book screen.he or she scrolls down to see a new page. The process continues until the entire book has been read.As you pointed out.Mr.Slocum,it's great to lie on a warm, sandy beach with a book. You can do that just as easily with an e-book as you can with a traditional paper book.In fact, because e-books are so light, you can carry them anywhere.Say,for example, that you like to read on the bus.Which would you rather carry with you-a heavy 800-page novel,or an e-book that weighs only a few ounces?Another important advantage is offered by e-books as well. They are more environmentfriendly than traditional books. At present, thousands of trees are cut down each year to meet the publishing industry’s demand for paper.Books that don’t sell are eventually returned to the Dublisher and destroyed. This terrible waste could be avoided if everyone used e-books,which require no paper.Sincerely,David EngDavid Eng 59.What does Editor Henry Slocum think about e-books?A.Interesting.B.Expensive.C.Convenient D.Environment-friendly.60.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2 ?A.What an e-book is.B.Why e-books are popular.C.How e-books have developed.D.Who are the readers of e-books.61.In David’s letter, he thinks thatA.E-books will come down in priceB.E-books come in various sizes and shapesC.E-books do little harm to the environmentD.E-books are no better than traditional books62.The main purpose of the letter is toA.explain how to read e-booksB.honor the person who invented e-booksC.scold publishers for wasting so much paperD.provide evidence that e-books are a good idea石景山一模AFather’s GardenMy father was always a good (酷爱的) gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled(翻耕的) soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground. As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the tiller(耕作机) ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corn, and our favorite--- red tomatoes. As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden. But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of multicolored vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes. For the first few years after he died, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.56. When they learned we were focused on values and culture at GE, people asked if "Jack has gone soft." I've been No.1 or No.2 Jack, Services Jack, Global Jack, and, in more recent years.Six Sigma Jack and e-Business Jack. When we made an effort to acquire Honeywell in October 2000, and I agreed to stay on through the transition (过渡期), some thought of me as the Long-in-the-Tooth Jack hanging on by his fingertips to his CEO job. Those characterizations said less about me and a lot more about the stage our company went through.Truth is, down deep, I've never really changed much from the boy my mother raised in Salem, Massachusetts. When I started on this journey in 1981 , standing before Wall Street analysts for the first time at New York's Pierre Hotel, I said I wanted GE to become " the most competitive enterprise on earth." My objective was to put a small-company spirit in a big-company body, to build an organization out of an old-line industrial company that would be more high-spirited, more adaptable, and more flexible than companies that are one-fiftieth our size.I said then that I wanted to create a company " where people dare to try new things ?where people know that only the limits of their creativity and drive, their own standards of personal excellence, will be the ceiling on how far and how fast they move."I've put my mind, my heart, and my courage into that journey every day of the 40-plus years I've been lucky enough to be a part of GE.59.According to the first two paragraphs, the author ______.A.had many ups and downsB.had a poor image in publicC.became CEO of GE 41 years agoD.suffered from some mental illnesses60.As the author sees it, the many nicknames of him indicate ______.A.the change of his character with the timeB.the various opinions of different journalistsC.his company's different stages of developmentD.his popularity among his friends and relatives61.According to the author, GE in 1981 ______.A.should seek broader space for developmentB.was the most competitive company in the worldC.differed from many old-line industrial companiesD.was a big company with a small-company's spirit62.What does the underlined word "journey" in the last paragraph probably mean?A.Taking GE to a new height.B.Travelling from home to office.C.Seeking a higher position in GE.D.Growing from a baby into an adult. AYou know what it s like. You've just arrived in Toronto after a long flight, and all you really want to do is to lie down and relax in your hotel room. But first you have to make a few quick notes for tomorrow's meeting, then check your e-mails, and perhaps print out a few things. And you need to make a few local telephone calls, and one call home to your family. And what do you usually get? Your desk is just about big enough for a cup of coffee; there's no desk lamp; the stationery (办公用品)is a couple of sheets of headed notepaper; and a pen doesn't work.Printing has to be arranged with the Reception, and when you try to use your cell phone you find that it won't work in Canada.Well, Harmony is different.Just tell us in advance what you're going to need, and we'll see that it's waiting for you when you arrive. There will be a printer in your room if you want one, and a cell phone that really works. All you have to pay for is the calls you make.We can also arrange a room for business meetings, and, using the very best employment agency, even supply a secretary to take minutes. All we ask is a few days' notice. All our-rooms are of the same high standard, and we guarantee not to increase prices in the next twelve months. But book now, because we're already filling up fast, and we'd hate 1:0 disappoint you.Harmony-the hotel you ye always wanted; but never been able to find-until now56.The advertisement is intended forA.airline staff B.business peopleC.secretaries D.tourists57.What must the guest do if he wants a secretary?A.Inform the hotel in advance.B.Tell the Reception on arrival.C.Call an employment agency.D.Put up a notice in the hotel.58, Why is it best to book now?A.The best rooms go first.B.Prices might increase soon.C.It ensures high standard rooms.D.Rooms may become unavailable.59.What is special about Harmony^A.It offers telephone calls for free.B.It provides printing at the Reception.C.It gives high standard information services.D.It makes arrangements to meet guests' needs.BLumberjack ArtWhen people think of an artist, they probably do not imagine a lumberjack(伐木工人)cutting down trees with a chainsaw.Yet many lumberjacks consider themselves to be artists.Instead of.patiently working on a large block of hard rock, however, lumberjack artists use chainsaws to..carve their, masterpieces from wood.Wooden, sculptures (雕塑)created with chainsaws are perfect examples of folk art.Everydaytools are used to create art that focuses on subjects found in nature, such as bears or other forest animals. Not all lumberjacks are artists, but some chainsaw artists have been lumberjacks.A lumberjack, who is also an artist might cut down a tree during a workday. If the stump, the bottom of the tree, is a good size, the artist might be motivated to sculpt the stump into the shape of a forest animal. The chainsaw artist might also carve other large blocks of wood.Sometimes a homeowner might cut down a tree in the yard and then hire a chainsaw artist to create an outdoor sculpture from the stump. So, this art owes its origins to everyday tasks and nature. The origins of chainsaw art may be humble (不起眼的), but the practice has expanded well beyond turning a stump into a sculpture. In some ways chainsaw artists are like traditional woodcarvers. One artist said that using chainsaws was simply more practical. This person began his work as a traditional woodcarver-that is, he used hand tools to .carve the wood into the shapes he wanted. To save time, he began using a chainsaw to remove some parts of the wooden block. This artist realized that the chainsaw not only cut down large pieces of wood quickly, but also produced a distinctive and beautiful pattern on- the: wood. These patterns would not be seen in other pieces of art.Eventually, the artist began using the chainsaw for nearly all of his carvings. However unusual it may seem, chainsaw art is here to stay. The final test of success for any type of art is the enthusiasm and acceptance of the public. The conclusion is; people love watching chainsaw artists work, and people love the sculptures they create.60.What do we know about chainsaw artists?A.They are originally traditional lumberjacks.B. They create masterpieces in woods and forests.C. They introduce a new concept of artists to people.D. They produce their sculptures while cutting down trees.61. Chainsaw artA. is a kind of folk artB. is hard to be spreadC. focuses on modern themesD. needs time to be mastered62. What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 4?A. The origins of the lumberjack art.B. The experiences of a chainsaw artist.C. The procedure for creating a chainsaw sculpture.D. The application of chainsaw in the lumberjack art.。
