The aperture in the stripper plate must be slightly larger in diameter than the major diameter of the thread in order to prevent scoring of the thread.
Stripping internal threads
The internally thread component may be stripped from the core using the basic stripper plate design providing the plastic material has sufficient elasticity during the ejection phase②.
Various power systems are available to actuate the unscrewing mould and there are also alternative methods of linking the power source to the mould.
The transmission system may be broadly classified as following: gear train, chain and sprocket, rack and pinion, worm and worm-wheel.
After the mould is opened from ‘A’, the ejection system operates, and both the ejector plate assembly and stripper plate function simultaneously.
The ejector plate assembly’s movement effectively withdraws the central mandrel from the collapsible sleeve, thereby causing it to contract in diameer of alternative designs of mould to consider, and for reference these are summarized as follows:
(i) single interrupted thread design; (ii) stripping thread design; (iii) split core design; (iv) fixed threaded core design; (v) loose threaded core design; (vi) collapsible core design; (vii) unscrewing mould design.
Finally, continued movement of the stripper plate extracts the molding from the mould.

Unscrewing moulds
High labour costs and other modern production requirements demand the maximum use of automatic operation.
To provide required rotary motion an unscrewing unit is fitted behind the moving mould plate in place of the conventional ejector unit.
In certain designs however, where positive ejection is required, an ejector system may also be incorporated.
The extent of complication varies and it is dependent on a number of factors, namely:
(i) type of thread: internal, external, continuous or discontinuous; (ii) method: thread form molded or incorporated by the use of a metal insert; (iii) type of productions: manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic.
During the latter stages of opening the stripper plate’s movement is checked, thereby causing the second opening to occur at B. The molding is, therefore, progressively stripped as the core is withdrawn through the stripper plate.
Lesson 2
Mould for Threaded Components
It is frequently necessary to design a mould for a component which incorporates a thread. A thread is a form of undercut which normally increases the intricacy of the design.
The same principle applies here as to stripping any internal undercut, i.e. the molding must be free to expand during ejection to permit the molded undercut to ride over the restriction on the core③.
The power systems adopted are: manually powered (see Figure 2-4); hydraulically or pneumatically powered; machine powered; electrically powered.

Moulds for internally threaded components
The internal thread comes within the broad definition of an internal undercut in that the thread forms a restriction which prevents the straight draw removal of the molding from the core①.
The central mandrel is removed the segments collapse to their positions as shown at (b).
A typical application of the collapsible core is considered. The required threaded form is machined on the front end of the collapsible sleeve, as shown (Figure2-3).

The assembly consists of two primary parts, a centre mandrel and a collapsible sleeve which usually forms twelve segments (see Figure 2-2).
In the molding position as shown at (a), the angles on the two sets of segments match precisely, forming a complete hollow cylinder.
The required core dimensions and thread form may therefore be incorporated on the front end of this collapsible sleeve in the same ways as for a conventional solid type core.

The mould opens initially and, because of molding shrinkage and the undercut form, the molding is withdrawn from the cavity.
Moulds for externally threaded components
An external thread comes within the broad definition of an external undercut, namely ‘a restriction situated in the outside form of a molding which prevents straight draw removal of the molding from the cavity’.
