They are discovering how to design spaces that 41 creativity, keep people focused and relaxed.Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can 42 creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room’s ceiling affects how people think. Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may 43 them to make more abstract connections. Low ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook. In addition to ceiling height, the view 44 by a building may influence an occupant’s ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most 45 on a standard test of attention. Studies show that students in classrooms with 46 views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily 47 roads and parking lots.Recent study on room lighting design suggests that dim light helps people to loosen up. If that is 48 generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase 49 . Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.III. Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.Much time and effort has been devoted to researching the mental health benefits of flexible work environments, but can the ability to leave work early to watch your son’s soccer game, or arrive at the office a bit later in the morning in order to 50 some personal matters, have broader physical health benefits 51 making you feel a bit less tired?According to new research published in the Cochrane Library's Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, it seems so. In a review of 10 previous studies examining the health effects of flexible work conditions for more than 16,000 people, 52 from the U.K.'s Durham University and University of Newcastle, as well as the University of Montreal, found that flexible work schedules — when employees can 53 their starting times, for example —were associated with improvements in a person’s overall health. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, in all of the studies included in the review, researchers found no evidence for 54 effects of more flexible work schedules. This initial analysis was intended to throw light on the potential health benefits of flexible work options, which are increasingly 55 throughout Scandinavia, and have recently gained some ground in the U.K. 56 , last April, the British government 57 a policy that allowed parents of children ages six and under to request flexible work arrangements to include parents of children ages 16 and younger. In the U.S., the phenomenon is a bit slower to catch on. Yet, the economic slowdown of recent years may have contributed to 58 in workplace flexibility — as companies 59 to reward employees with bonuses(奖⾦) or raises may 60 other forms of compensation(补偿), Reuters reported early last year.Previous research too, of course, has indicated the benefits of flexible work environments toward positive mental health outcomes. And while these latest findings are promising, the researchers stress that more study is vital to understanding the detailed 61 between flexible work and improved health outcomes. To truly 62 the benefits of flexible working conditions, the researchers say, additional study analyzing health outcomes among a wide 63 of workers — from high-ranking executives to hourly employees —is 64 , which helps to gain a deeper understanding of the issue, and to shape future workplace policy.50. Mullen’s goal is to provide passion, professionalism, and perseverance as an educator. “A teacher can receive no greaterreward than the knowled ge that he or she helped recover a lost student,” Mullen remarked. He will travel for one year as a full-time national and international spokesperson for education beginning June 1, 2009.The National Teacher of the Year Program focuses public attention on teaching excellence and is the oldest and most famous national honors program for teachers. “ACEI is a proud participant in the selection process for the National Teacher of the Year, and we are pleased to see Anthony Mullen selected. Once doctors arrive, the chip will also be able to tell them which drugs are not suitable for little Jonny or Janie. At the hospital, the chip will tell doctors his or her complete medical history. And of course, when you arrive to pick up your child, setting the hospital bill with your healthinsurance policy will be a simple matter of waving your own chip ___ the one embedded(植⼊) in your hand.To some, this may sound unbelievable. But the technology for such chips is no longer the stuff of science fiction. And it may soon offer many other benefits besides locating lostc hildren or elderly patients. It could be used as credit cards and people won’t have to carry wallets anymore. On the other hand, some are already wondering what this sort of technology may do to the sense of personal privacy and liberty.“Any technology of this kind could result in abuse of personal privacy,” says Lee Tien, senior staff lawyer for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “If a kid can be tracked, do you want other people to be able to track your kid? It’s a double-edgedsword.”Applied Digital Solutions, Inc. in Palm Beach, Florida, says it has recently applied to the Food and Drug Admission for permission to begin testing its device in humans. About the size of a grain of rice, the microchip can be coded with bits of information and embedded in humans under a layer of skin. When scanned by a nearby reader, the embedded chip gives the data. Most embedded chip designs are so-called passive chips, which give information only when scanned by a nearby reader. But active chips ___ such as the proposed Digital Angel of the future ___ will give out information all the time. And that means designers will have to develop some sort of power source that can provide a continuous source of energy, yet be small enough to be embedded with the chips. In addition to technical problems, many suspect that all sorts of legal and privacy issues would have to be cleared as well. 68. By using the example in the first two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that_______.A. chips are usually used to locate lost childrenB. chips are more convenient than credit cardsC. chips will soon be useful in many aspects of daily livesD. chips will bring out the issue of abuse of personal privacy69. What is the attitude of Lee Tien towards the chips?A. NegativeB. PositiveC. IndifferentD. Concerned70. Which of the following statements about Digital Angel is NOT true?A. It will include a chip and a power source.B. It will be produced and replace passive chips.C. It will be embedded in humans under a layer of skin.D. It will give information without being scanned by a reader.71. It is indicated in the passage that chip producers have to consider the following issues EXCEPT _______.A. financial problemsB. technical problemsC. legal problemsD. privacy problem(C)If you don’t have a college degree, you’re at greater risk of developing memory problems or even Alzheimer’s (⽼年痴呆). Education plays a key role in lifelong memory performance and risk for mental disorder, and it's well documented that those with a college degree possess a cognitive(认知的)advantage over those less educated in middle and old age. Now, a large national study from Brandeis University published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry shows that those with less schooling can significantly make up for poorer education by frequently engaging in mental exercises such as word games, puzzles, reading, and lectures.“The lifelong benefits of higher educati on for memory in later life are quite impressive, but we do not clearly understand how and why these effects last so long,” said lead author Margie Lachman, a psychologist. She suggested that higher educationmay encourage lifelong interest in cognitive efforts, while those with less education may not engage as frequently in mental exercises that help keep the memory agile (敏捷地).But education early in adulthood does not appear to be the only route to maintain your memory. The study found that intellectual activities undertaken regularly made a difference. “Among individuals with low education, those who are engaged in reading, writing, attending lectures, doing word games or puzzles once a week or more had memory scores similar to people with more ed ucation,” said Lachman. The study, called Midlife in the United States, assessed 3,343 men and women between the ages of 32 and 84 with an average age of 56 years. Almost 40 percent of the participants had at least a 4-year college degree. The researchers evaluated how the participants performed in two cognitive areas, verbal (⾔语的)memory and executive function --- brain processes involved in planning, abstract thinking and cognitive flexibility. Participants were given a series of tests, including tests of verbal fluency, word recall, and backward counting. As expected, those with higher education said they engaged in cognitive activities more often and also did better on the memory tests, but some with lower education also did well, explained Lachman.“The findings are promising because they suggest there may be ways to level the playing field for those with lower educational achievement, and protect those at greatest risk for memory declines,” said Lachman. “Although we can not rule out the possibility that those who have better memories are the ones who take on more activities, the evidence is consistent with cognitive plasticity (可塑性), and suggests some degree of personal control over cognitive functioning in adulthood by adopting an i ntellectually active lifestyle.”72. What is the text mainly about?A. Higher education has a better cognitive advantage.B. Better memories result from college degree.C. Cognitive activity does good to one’s mind.D. Poor education has more risk of memory declines.73. According to the result of Margie Lachman’s study, we can conclude that ________.A. education is responsible for the lifelong memory performance and risk for mental disorderB. education early in adulthood can be the only route to maintain your memoryC. those with higher education did better on the memory tests than those with lower educationD. an intellectually active lifestyle does help to maintain your memory74. What do we know about the study called Midlife?A. Participants each were given a battery to test their memory.B. The average age of the participants are 56 years old.C. Participants had to perform in one of the two cognitive areas.D. One in four of the participants had a 4-year college degree.75. Why are the findings of the Lachman’s study promising?A. The lower educated may have the same opportunities to keep up memory.B. We may have ways to cure the people who have memory declines.C. Adopting a different lifestyle can control cognitive functioning.D. We can find out the possibility to have better memories.Section CDirections: Read the following passage and choose the most suitable heading from A—F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need. When families gather for Christmas dinner, some will stick to formal traditions dating back to Grandma’s generation. Their tables will be set with the good dishes and silver, and the dress code will be Sunday-best.76.But in many other homes, this china-and-silver elegance has given way to a stoneware(粗陶)-and-stainless informality, with dresses assuming an equally casual-Friday look. For hosts and guests, the change means greater simplicity and comfort. For makers of fine china in Britain, it spells economic hard times.77.Last week Royal Doulton, the largest employer in Stoke-on-Trent, announced that it is eliminating 1,000 jobs — one-fifth of its total workforce. That brings to more than 4,000 the number of positions lost in 18 months in the pottery region. Wedgwood and other pottery factories made cuts earlier.78.Although the increased value of the pound and weak markets in Asia play a role in the downsizing, the layoffs in Stoke have their roots in earthshaking social shifts. A spokesman for Royal Doulton admitted that the company “has been somewhat slow in catching up with the trend” toward casual dining. Families eat together less often, he explained, and more people eat alone, either because they are single or they eat in front of television.79.Even dinner parties, if they happen at all, have gone casual. In a time of long work hours and demanding family schedules, busy hosts insist, rightly, that it’s better to share a takeout pizza on paper plates in the family room than to wait for the perfect moment or a “real” dinner party. Too often, the perfect moment never comes. Iron a fine-patterned tablecloth? Forget it. Polish the silver? Who has time?80.Yet the loss of formality has its down side. The fine points etiquette(礼节) that children might once have learned at the table by observation or instruction from parents and grandparents. (“Chew with your mouth closed.” “Keep your elbows off the table.”) must be picked up elsewhere. Some companies now offer etiquette seminars for employees who may be competent professionally but clueless socially.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully and answer the questions or complete the statements in no more than 12 words.A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always go throug h a “ask-yourself” test: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we useour words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 10 WORDS.)81. As to the power of words, the author believes they can either ___________________.82. People should only speak words of encouragement to themselves to___________________.83. What does the underlined part “give ourselves a pat on the back” mean?84. What should we do if the “ask-yourself test” is not passed?

Dr Atkinson explains that this can be an excellent way of adding conclusion or 46 a statement. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was a fan of this technique. Instead of a happy, enjoyable childhood, Alex’s life became a series of trips to the hospital. Over time, she met many children who, like herself, were going through painful chemotherapy (化学治疗) treatments. This prompted Alex to come up with a plan to “make lemonade.”At the age of 4, Alex decided to raise money to fight cancer. With her parents’ support, she started a neighborhood lemonade stand, charging 50 cents a cup.At the end of the first month, Alex had raised over $2,000 with more than one generous person paying $500 for a single cup of lemonade. After moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Alex took part in experimental cancer treatment. She continued her fundraising. Soon the news of Alex’s stand began to spread. More and more people joined her cause. Communities and schools began setting up their own “Alex’s lemonade stands.”People from around the world wrote to give encouragement and show gratitude to the brave little girl.Sadly, on August 1, 2004, Alex lost her battle with cancer—but not before raising an amazing $700,000! It was her privilege to present this amount to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Alex’s dream of raising $1 million was realized in November 2004, three months after her death.“She believed that one little person can make a big difference,” said Alex’s father, Jay.Alex has left a remarkable legacy. The World Health Organization says more than one billion people live in areas where renewable water resources are not available. The problem is especially serious in Asia and the Pacific. A United Nations report says water availability in that area is the second lowest in the world, after Africa.Nearly 700,000 people in Asia and the Pacific lack safe drinking water. The U.N. report notes that the world's poorest countries are also the ones that use the most water for agriculture. Agriculture uses about 80% of the water in the Asia-Pacific area. There has also been an increase in water used for industry. China and India more than tripled their industrial water use between 1992 and 2002.The lack of clean drinking water around the world forces millions of people to drink unsafe water. This leads to an increase in diseases like diarrhea, the second leading cause of death in children under five. Floods, droughts, pollution and climate change have created even more problems. The Millennium Development Goals for 2015 call for a 50% decrease in the number of people without safe drinking water and basic sanitation.Scientists, governments and aid organizations around the world are increasing their efforts to meet these goals. Still the U.N. says there is much work to be done. During its yearly World Water Day observance last month it called on the international community to work together to solve the water crisis. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are doing just that. The American and South Korean researchers are investigating a new technology for turning sea water into drinking water. The new technology is called concentration polarization. The process uses electricity to help separate electrically charged salt particles from water to make it drinkable. The researchers tested their desalination process on a computer chip the size of a postage stamp. The chip removed 99% of the salt and other harmful substances from water samples. So far the method purifies only small amounts of water. But the researchers say it may someday be available as a personal water purification product.72.What does “that area” in the first paragraph refer to?A. Asia.B. The Pacific.C. The Asia-Pacific area.D. The whole world.73. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A. All the Asian countries use the most water for agriculture.B. Diarrhea may cause the death of children under five.C. Floods can help solve the drinking water problems.D. In 2015 safe drinking water will decrease by 50%.74. What can we conclude from the passage?A. Only Asian countries pay attention the water crisis.B. The new technology has been put into use.C. A new technology is being tested to turn sea water into drinking water.D. A personal water purification product is available to us.75. What is the main topic of the passage?A. Worldwide attention to the water crisis.B. How to solve the water crisis.C. The results brought by water crisis.D. A new technology.Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.about. Here are just a few ways to make a difference in you community.76.People often throw litter in places where there is already litter. And problem only becomes worse until someone can’t tolerate it and does something. Get together with your friends to organize a cleanup program. You can pick up trash in a large area twice a year. Or you could clean a small area every few months. Living in a spruced-up neighborhood will be a reward in itself.77.Your special skill or hobby might be more valuable than you think. For example, the Giving Strings Orchestra in Ohio gives money from its concerts to children’s charities. 11-year-old Jacob Komar gives more than 60 computers which he has upgraded and rebuilt to families who cannot afford. If you knit or sew, garden or raise birds, think about how your hobby can benefit others.78.collect books and distribute them to school libraries. If you are a parent, you know how quickly children outgrow their toys. Why not find new home for those perfectly good toys?79.Almost all neighborhoods have a few people who are housebound. They are often elderly. By letting them “borrow”your legs and eyes, you can make them feel included. You can run errands for them, like shopping or paying bills. You can also read to them if their vision is failing. You can give them friendship that governments can’t provide. That’s what80.Reading clubs are popular all over Europe and North America. Members might read at home to prepare for discussion. Or they might read aloud to each other and talk about what they just read. Either way, a book or article can spark lively discussion. And this often challenges people to take action. The clubs are a good way to welcome newcomers to the community. Newcomers can find new friends with similar interests.Section DDirections:Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. The days of the hunter are almost over in India. This is mainly because there is practically nothing left to kill, and partly because some steps have been taken mainly by banning tiger-shooting to protect those animals which still survive. Some people say that Man is naturally a hunter. I disagree with this view. Surely our earliest forefathers, who at first possessed no weapons, spent their time digging for roots, and were no doubt themselves often hunted by meat-eating animals.I believe the main reason why the modern hunter kills is that he thinks people will admire his courage in overpowering dangerous animals. Of course, there are a few who truly believe that the killing is not really the important thing, and that the chief pleasure lies in the joy of the hunt and the beauty of the wild countryside. There are also thosefor whom hunting in fact offers a chance to prove themselves and risk death by design; these men go out after dangerous animals like tigers, even if they say they only do it to rid the countryside of a threat. I can respect reasons like these, but they are clearly different from the need to strengthen your high opinion of yourself. The greatest big-game hunters expressed in their writings something of these finer motives. One of them wrote:“You must properly respect what you are after and shoot it clearly and on the animal’s own territory (领地). You must fix forever in your mind all the wonders of that particular day. This is better than letting him grow a few years olderto be attacked and wounded by his own son and eventually eaten, half alive, by other animals. Hunting is not a cruel and senseless killing ——not if you respect the thing you kill, not if you kill to enrich your memories, not if you kill to feed your peopl e.”I can understand such beliefs, and can compare these hunters with those who hunted lions with spears and bravely caught them by the tail. But this is very different from many tiger-shoots I have seen, in which modern weapons were used. The so-called hunters fired from tall trees or from the backs of trained elephants. Such methods made tigers seem no more dangerous than rabbits.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)81. In a large part, there is no more hunting in India now because ________.82. Why does the author think modern hunters mainly kill?83. What does the underlined “this” in the last paragraph refer to?84. What is the author’s view on the tiger-shoots he has seen?第 II 卷(共45分)I. TranslationDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.他不情愿留出点钱来。

The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.Ben Johnson was one of the few men ever buried standing up. As the story goes, King Charles I liked his works very much and once made him a promise in 1743. The King told Ben, a famous novelist, that he could choose any place he liked for his grave.Twenty years later, Johnson died. Then it was found that the spot he had picked up was already filled. The ground space left in it was just 18 square inches. It was too small for a grave. But Charles kept his word. He had Johnson’s coffin placed on its end in such a small place. That way it would just fit.Questions 11. What was Ben Johnson’s probable occupation?12. When did Ben Johnson die?13. How did the King, Charles I bury Ben?Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.Doctor Mayer once treated a child suffering a second degree burn. After the child had been treated and was being prepared for leaving, Dr. Mayer talked to the parents about how they should care for the child at home. Half a dozen other family members were also listening to her. A few hours later, when she came to say goodbye, the family asked her to settle an argument they’d been having over exactly what advice she had given. S he said, “All of them had heard the simple instructions I had given just a few hours before, but they had different versions. The most basic details were unclear and confusing. I was surprised, because these were intelligent people.”This event made Dr. Mayer know that most people just don’t listen very well.Nowadays, she says she repeats her instructions, and even asks them to tell her what they think they are supposed to do. She also provides take-home sheets which are computer printouts for reference. Dr. Mayer’s listeners are not unusual. When new or difficult material is presented, almost all listeners are faced with a challenge that human speech is not as accurate as the printed word. (Please listen again.)Questions 14. What did the child’s family members argue about?15. How did Dr. Mayer ensure her patients understand her instructions?16. What does this passage mainly tell us?Section C Longer ConversationsDirections:In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. Tanning takes place when UV rays from the sun cause the production of a pigment called melanin (黑色素)in the skin. Rather than being a sign of good health, getting a tan through sunbathing actually means that your skin has been damaged and is trying to protect itself. UV light is an invisible light that is always present in varying degrees. To help people become aware of the risks, scientists have produced a UV index, which is measured from zero to ten plus. The higher the number on the index, the greater the amount of exposure you will have to UV radiation. It is necessary to be careful in the sun on days with a high UV index. If you stay in the sun too long, you will burn and peel, and that’s when the trouble starts. But thousands of people in Britain develop skin cancer each year because of their enduring love affair with the sun. In a survey among people who are between fifteen to twenty-four years old, one in four said that, if the weather was sunny at the weekend, they would sunbathe non-stop. Almost all of them thought that exposing themselves to the sun for only two days a week was safe. One in seven of the people questioned said that they would sunbathe without any sunscreen or other protection. People have to realize that there is no such thing as a “safe tan”.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NOT MORE THAN 12 words.)70.What can UV rays of the sun cause?____________________________________________________________________.71.
