Passage One

Peter is an American boy in our class. He is tall and handsome. He has a big nose and two big blue eyes. His hair is light brown and curly. He likes music. He likes to play football. He is on our school football team. He can speak s ome Chinese, but he can’t write it. We help him with his Chinese. He helps us with our English. We are good friends.

Passage Two

It is a fine Wednesday morning. The sky is blue and the sun is bright. There are a lot of foreign people at Lido Hotel. They are wearing hats, sunglasses and light clothes because it is hot. They are going to the Great Wall.

These people come from different countries-America, England, France, Japan, Australia and many other countries. Some of them speak French. Some speak Japanese. The others speak English. There are three Chinese girls looking after them. Each of them speaks a foreign language-English, French or Japanese. They are very friendly and helpful.

Passage Three

It is Friday evening. An American woman, Mrs Brown, asks two of her good friends to her home for dinner. She finds there is not much food in the fridge, so she drives to Mr Hunt’s shop. She wants to buy a lot of things. Mr Hunt is glad to see her. He asks her what she wants. She has a shopping list in her hand.

Now look at the list of things Mrs Brown wants to buy. Make up a dialogue between Mrs Brown and Mr Hunt. Use dollars and cents when talking about the prices. Write it down in your exercise book.

Passage Four

On weekdays I get up at 6:30. I have breakfast at 7:00 and then I go to school. I usually go to school by bike. I get to school at about 7:30 every day. I don’t like to be late. Our classes begin at 8:00.

I have lunch at noon. In the afternoon classes are over at 3:30, and I get home at about 4:00. But sometimes I don’t leave school so early because I play basketball there. Then I get home at 5:40. I have supper at about 6:00.

Passage Five

Thanks for your e-mail. You want to know more about China? Tomorrow is going to be the Mid-autumn Fe stival. It’s like our Thanksgiving. Families get together. It usually comes in September

or October. This year it’s going to be on September 15th..On that day families eat a big dinner, like we do. They also eat mooncakes. These are small round cakes. They taste a little like our pies. Many families eat their dinner outside in the open air. The moon looks brighter and rounder on this day. In America, we call this moon the Harvest Moon. Chinese people often talk about their families and tell the story of Cha ng’e. I’m going to a friend’s home for Mid-autumn Festival.

How is everything going? Did you get my Christmas card? What did you do during the Christmas holiday?

Now, it’s the end of the term and winter holiday will soon begin.

It’ll last fro m January 20th to February 25th. We’ll have a longer holiday this year than last year. The spring Festival will be on February 12th this year. It’ll be the year of horse.

Now I am working hard on my exams. We’ll have them next week. After the exam we’ll ha ve a get-together on the afternoon of January 19th. We’ll put on plays, too. Each of us will bring some food. We’ll have a lot of fun. Oh, I can’t wait.

Most of North and South China will have a cold wet day. It will be cloudy at times. There will be a strong wind to the north of the Huai River. The day after tomorrow will be sunny.

In the northeast it will be fine. The temperature will stay above zero in the daytime, but at night it will fall below zero again. In the Northeast there will be snow in the night. The snow will be heavy in some places.

Passage Eight

Last night, the Swedish rock band, yesterday, gave a concert in Kunming. More than five thousand people were there. Most of them were students or young people. They enjoyed the music very much.

In the middle of the concert, one of the singers, Max, had an accident. He jumped up and down, but he was very careless. He fell down and broke his leg. Some people took him to hospital.

After Max left, there were only two singers-Erik and Elsa. They didn’t want to stop the concert, so they went on. They sang some of their most famous songs: “Why did you leave?”, “There was someone in my heart”, “She didn’t remember my name”, “I can’t forget the past”.

Passage Nine

Susan, Mr Mott’s wife, is a scientist. Last year she invented the memory robot. She invented it because her husband had a very bad memory. He could not remember his telephone number. He often forgot important things.

The memory robot followed Mr Mott all the time. It listened to everything he said. It saw everything he did. The robot went to his classes. It watched him talk to his students. It watched him eat his meals. At night, it watched him sleep. It knew everything about Mr Mott.

Mr Mott could ask the robot questions. It always knew the answers. It remembered everything. Susan often liked to ask the robot questions, too. She liked to know everything about her husband.

Passage Ten

My uncle, Michael Wilson, is a businessman. He sells computers to

many countries. He is very, very busy. His office is in New Y ork, but he is often away. He travels a lot every month. He goes to visit people and people come to see him. They discuss business together. He has meetings every day.

Uncle Mike usually travels from one place to another. Last Monday he was in Shanghai. Three days ago he was in Dalian. The day before yesterday he was in Hong Kong. Yesterday he was in Taipei. Last night he was in Tokyo. Now he is back in New York again.

“Do you enjoy your work, Uncle?” I asked him one day.

“Yes. It’s very interesting and exciting. And I can see the world at the same ti me.”
