Babies as young as 5 months of age can distinguish an exciting tune from a sad one, according to a study published in 2021 in the journal Neuron.Speaking of music, it seems that babies can’t resist it. Not only are their ears sensitive to the beats, babies can actually dance in time to them, according to a study published in 2020. To test their dancing ability, the researchers played recordings of classical music and speech to them, and videotaped the results. The babies moved their arms, hands, legs, feet, and heads much more in response to the music than to speech. The findings suggest this dancing ability is innate(天生的) in humans.Babies can apparently learn even while asleep. As newborn babies spend most of their time sleeping, this newfound ability might be crucial(相当重要的) for them to adapt rapidly to the world around them, and help ensure survival, the researchers say. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Deciding whether another person is helpful or harmful is crucial in choosing friends — and that ability starts being visible early. Kiley Hamlin of Yale University showed both 6– and 10–month –olds some anthropomorphized(人格化的) shapes, in which one shape helped another climb a hill, while a third shaped pushed the climber down. The little ones then got to choose which shape they preferred. For both age groups, most babies chose the helper shapes. This character–judging ability could be the first step in the formation of morals, Hamlin says.11.What does the third paragraph mainly say?A. Babies are born to dance.B. Babies prefer classical music.C. Babies love listening to music.D. Babies can tell different tunes apart.12.What can be inferred from the passage?A. Babies can understand emotions.B. Babies value friendship very much.C. It’s hard for babies to adapt to the world around them.D. Babies show no reaction to speech.13.Kiley Hamlin found that babies ________.A. love to make friendsB. learn nothing while asleepC. can tell right from wrongD. like watching anthropomorphized showsLosing a job is considered one of the five most stressful life changes you can experience. Those who have been there say it feels like being robbed of your identity and is as painful as the loss of a loved one.It may be hard to believe at first, but finally you can use this experience as your advantage —to find another, perhaps even better job, to strengthen your relationship with your family, and to make some much-needed changes in your life. Here are three essential steps.Step1 Get emotional support. Because it’s easy to feel uneasy and vulnerable(脆弱), turning to others is the key to making a smooth transition(过渡). You’ll need people who will listen and provide a safe place for you to cry, or to express your fears and concerns.Don’t go it alone. It takes courage to ask for help, and yet, help may be what you need most to move forward.Step2 Seek professional guidance. Getting assistance from a recruiter(招聘人员) or career adviser will not only help you value your experience and improve your skills, it also will ensure that you put your best foot forward. Once again, your local unemployment office should have helpful resources. If possible, try not to let fear cause you to grab the first new job you’re offered (unless it’s the right one). Give yourself time to explore different choices.Step3 Consolidate family ties. Meet with family members to openly discuss your feelings. Listen carefully without interrupting one another, and give everyone a turn to speak. When a man I know did this with his family, his wife agreed to leave the job search planning to him and his outplacement adviser. In turn, he agreed to keep her informed about the process on a weekly basis. When you keep the lines of communication open, you can build stronger relationships.Once you’ve got a new job, create your own security. Keep your resume up-to-date, stay in touch with recruiters about the job market, and constantly improve your skills to stay marketable in your field.Although being laid-off can turn your life upside down, many people say that it gave them push they needed to start a new life!14.What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To ask the family for help.B. To stay in touch with recruiters in your field.C. To deal with the hurt from losing a job.D. To keep your resume up-to-date.15.The underlined title “Consolidate family ties” probably means “________”.A. find another better job for your familyB. strengthen your relationship with your familyC. make some much-needed changes in your familyD. create your own security to your family16.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Losing a job is stressful but is not so painful as the loss of a loved one.B. Turning to others is the main key to obtaining deepest sympathy.C. Asking for a career adviser will help you and improve your skills.D. Keeping the lines of communication open can end your relationships.17.We can infer from the passage that the author is most likely to ____________.A. be a life coachB. be a keeper of family tiesC. memorize his or her loved oneD. work in an employment agencyA student was one day taking a walk with his teacher. As they went along, they saw a pair of old shoes lying in the path. They were a poor farmer’s, who was working in the nearby field. The student turned to the teacher, saying: “we will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those trees, and wait to see what he will do.”“My young friend,” answered the teacher, “we should never make fun of the poor. Why not put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch?” The student did so and they both hid themselves behind the trees. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes. After putting on his coat, he put his foot into one of his shoes, and felt something hard. Then he bent (哈腰) down to feel what it was, and found the coin. Surprised, he looked at the coin, turned it around and looked at it again. He then looked around, but no person was seen. He put the money into his pocket, and continued to put on the other shoe. His surprise was doubled on finding the other coin.He couldn’t control his feelings and fell to his knees, looked up to the sky and expressed his thanks. Then he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread. He said the help would save them from dying. The student stood there deeply moved, and his eyes filled with tears. “Now,” said the teacher, “are you not much happier than if you had hidden the shoes?”18.When the student saw the shoes, he wanted to ________.A. steal themB. find their ownerC. play a joke on the ownerD. give the owner some money19.When the farmer saw the second coin, he ________.A. was very excited and gratefulB. was worried and looked up at the skyC. was surprised and decided to find the ownerD. spoke of his difficulties and asked for more help20.What can we learn from the passage?A. Amy Chua is a teacher in an American university and both of her parents are Chinese. In the book, Ms. Chua writes about how she taught her daughters. She told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters were not allowed to do, such as having a play date, watching TV or playing computer games and getting any grade less than an A.Many people are against Amy Chua’s parenting style (风格), even her husband, who is American. They say it is rude and unfair to children. But she says her parents raised her and her three sisters in that way.Ms. Chua says after her younger daughter shouted “I hate my life! I hate you!” she decided to retreat because she was afraid of losing her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children’s abilities.“The debate is about what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child,” said Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books on parenting. She says Amy Chua’s parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. It is a traditional way of parenting among immigrants (移民). They hope to get a better future for their children. She also sees a risk (风险). When children have no time to be social or to develop their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised.21.Which of the following words can best describe Amy Chua?A. Polite.B. Cruel.C. Strict.D. AWinter city breaks in Europe: readers' tipsSnow and ice is a strong characteristic in our readers' winter break tips, but it's not a complete white-out; your body temperature will be lifted by gingerbread and chestnuts everywhere.Winning tip: Bolzano, ItalyThe buildings are as gothic and spiky as anything across the Austrian border in this 25% German-speaking town, the largest in South Tirol. It's known as the Christmas Capital of Italy: it's snowy in winter, and the Germanic influence means there are Christmas markets and gingerbread everywhere. And there are other wintry things on offer if the markets and mulled wine aren't enough, including several cable cars running into the hills, taking you up to walks in the Renon hills (also known as the Ritten) and views of the Dolomites and the world-famous Ötzi the Iceman, sealed (密封) in ice in about 3,300BC, discovered in 1991 and on show in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology.Ice skating in Red Square, MoscowThere's nothing quite like celebrating Christmas in a country that once banned it. New Year is Russia's biggest holiday, but you don't have to wait until 31 December to go ice skating in Red Square. The famous skating spot is open from November 30 until March 9—and return flights from Gatwick to Moscow with EasyJet cost little more than £100 at present. A Chinese army happened to stop by a tea farm in the late Ming Dynasty (1368—1644) and the soldiers slept on raw tea leaves which were intended for green tea making. Helpless and eager to avoid further loss, the anxious tea producer roasted the withered (枯萎的) tea leaves immediately afterwards, with pine branches, ending up with a deep colored tea, which produced bright red soup, a smoky taste and sweet flavor. To the tea farmer's surprise, the taste and flavor became a hit in the market, and the whole area started to make the kind of tea to satisfy market demand.Around the end of the 16th century, Dutch business people took tea to Europe. Catherine of Braganza, when she married British King Charles Ⅱin 1662, took the tea drinking habit from Portugal to the British court. It was hard to say if people in the United Kingdom had the choice of drinking green tea, because it is said that after long sea transportation, green tea from China naturally fermented (发酵) into black tea. At the time British people still didn't know that black tea and green tea are made from the same leaves, so Scottish botanist Robert Fortune (1812—1880) met with disbelief when he pointed out that only a different processing method made black tea and green tea different.Fortune was sent by the East India Company to steal tea from China. He took more than 20,000 tea plants and seedlings to India in 1851. Although most of the tea plants he introduced toIndia are said to have died, trained Chinese tea workers he took there are believed to have equipped the country with the necessary technology and knowledge for tea making.28.The tea farmer invented red tea ________.A.to get a better tasteB.to please the soldiersC.to avoid losing more moneyD.to satisfy market demand29.According to the text, British people ________.A.preferred green tea to black tea in the 17th centuryB.made green tea transported from China into black teaC.was the first in Europe to have the habit of drinking teaD.thought black tea and green tea were made from different leaves30.What did Fortune do according to the text?A.He trained workers to make tea.B.He brought tea plants and seedlings to Britain.C.He did something illegal for the East India Company.D.He learned knowledge and skills to make different kinds of tea.31.What is the text mainly about?A.The origin of black tea.B.The technology for tea making.C.The tradition of drinking tea in Britain.D.The difference between black tea and green tea.DEverybody loves a good wedding and I'm no exception. I've been to a load of them in my native Britain and I must say that I usually have a great time. Most recently I went to one in the mountains of Sardinia and I really enjoyed this one for the differences from those in the UK.First, the two families spent three weeks before the big day preparing all the food, from wonderful home-made delicacies to simple traditional breads and pastas. In my experience, in the UK that hardest task is left to the caterers(承办酒席的人)! This particular ceremony was in a beautiful country church and afterwards the couple was driven to the reception in a wonderfullydecorated classic Fiat 500, which was really similar to what happens in the UK. However, the wedding with around 500 guests is much larger. The wine flowed, as did the chatter. There were the five or six courses of wonderful food, screaming kids running wild, the ceremonial cutting of the cake by the bride and groom, but no speeches! Not one. In the UK it's traditional for the father of the bride to propose(提议) a toast, followed by the groom and finishing up with that of the best man (伴郎). His speech generally has a good laugh at the groom's expense, but here the groom was spared that particular discomfort.Instead there was a delightful custom which I'd never seen before, in which six or seven of the male guests pass round the hall banging trays, drums, pots, pans that make noise, selling pieces of the groom's tie which has been cut into tiny bits. The money raised was then given to the happy couple to help them set up their new life together. Finally the evening saw a lot of traditional dancing, a little disco dancing and some karaoke. Pretty much the part I like best.32.How did the author feel about the Sardinian wedding?A.It was enjoyable.B.It was very strange.C.It was expensive.D.It was unpleasant.33.As for the preparations for the wedding, which part demanded the greatest effort?A.The particular ceremony.B.The wedding food.C.The disco dancing.D.The wedding speech.34.What can we infer about the best man's speech at a traditional British wedding?A.It is the best one of all the wedding speeches.B.It is usually very traditional and sounds too flat.C.It is funny but often makes the groom uncomfortable.D.It is more delightful than the Sardinian ceremonial speech.35.Why was the groom's tie cut into small pieces?A.To entertain the male guests as a wedding game.B.To start the dancing evening as a special ceremony.C.To get money from the guests to pay for the reception.D.To celebrate the wedding and raise money for the new couple.第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
