It may lead to the uncovering of chariot pit groups that could be a key to understanding Chinese civilizations that existed more than 2,000 years ago.Experts said the relics are dated more than 300 years earlier than the famous warriors(武士)in Shaanxi Province. What excited the experts were two other projects that located two huge pits with similar features.“It is absolutely a miracle. These relics indicate that there could be a tomb group in this area, which is likely to be important for China’s archaeological(考古学的)studies,”said Ma Juncai, a leading relic researcher in the province. In ancient China, carts, sheep, spoons and so on were buried to ensure that dead people had a happy afterlife. The number and quality of the sacrifices indicated the social status of the dead. The custom was carried into the Qin Dynasty. Emperor Qinshihuang’s tomb, located near Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, is accompanied by thousands of wood or clay figures of warriors and horses. The tomb is probably the most well-known.The discovered pit measures 10.4 meters long, 8.4 meters wide and 5 meters deep. It holds 20 carts in different sizes. The smallest one is 1.05 meters long and 1.3 meters wide.Experts think that 40 horses are likely to befound as well. Careful plans need to be made to deal with the demanding uncovering. “The clay is very weak and a small misstep can destroy the whole project. That’s why we need to take every step ver y carefully to protect these cherished cultural relics,” Ma said.36. What’s the passage mainly about?A. The dead people’s sacrifices in ancient China.B. China’s archaeological studies.C. The discovery of a large chariot pit in Henan.D. The history of Chinese civilizations.37. According to Ma Juncai, the uncovering of thethree pits is a miracle because ______.A. it shows there may be a tomb group thereB. it’s helpful in discovering EmperorQinshihuang’s tombC. the relics are dated such a long time agoD. the relics are more than 300 years older thanthe ones in Shaanxi38. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ______.A. all dead people had sacrifices in ancient ChinaB. the discovered pit is the most well-known inthe worldC. the discovered pit dates back to the QinDynastyD. Emperor Qinshihuang wanted to maintain hispower after death39. Careful plans for the uncovering are neededbecause ______.A. another 40 horses are likely to be found as wellB. the whole uncovering could be destroyed easilyC. experts are too busy to spare time for itD. the government hasn’t agreed to itBAmong the seven wonders of the ancient architectural(建筑方面的)world, the pyramids in Egypt are the only ones still standing. For 1,000 years, they were the tallest buildings in the world. Built with prehistoric technology, they were an architectural mystery, as strange as the Sphinx(狮身人面像).No one really knows how they were built. The first historical record, by the Greek writer Heroditus, came 2,000 years later. Without hard facts, there have been many theories.Hollywood has mostly followed the examples from the Greek record: 100,000 slaves worked hard for 20 years. Others believe a very large slope snaked around the pyramids. An American recently put forward the theory that kites could have lifted the 2-ton stones. Now Houdin, a French architect, says that after studying the pyramids for eight years, he has solved the mystery with the help of 3-D computer animation (三维动画). He believes the pyramids were built from the inside out through an internal slope that goes aro und a central point. “This is completely new. Everyone before me thought that the pyramids were built from the outside, and only from the o utside,” he said.Scholars of ancient Egypt are interested. “It’s a theory which sounds reasonable. Scholars of ancient Egypt agree it ought to be tested, and it doesn’t cause damage, so I wouldn’t be surprised that within a year, we have the final answer,” said Bob Brier, a scholar at Long Island University. If that is the case, we’ll know the truth about the pyramids in the blink of an eye, considering this mystery has lasted for nearly 5,000 years.40. According to the passage, how many ancientwonders in architecture have disappeared so far?A. Four.B. Five.C. Six.D. Seven.41. There are many theories of how the pyramidswere built because ________.A. researchers have different professionalknowledgeB. researchers research the pyramids from differentaspectsC. there are no reliable records of how thepyramids were builtD. there are many stories about how the pyramidswere built42. The French architect Houdin put forward histheory with the help of ________.A. many expertsB. computer technologyC. some scholars of ancient EgyptD. the historical record43. The underlined phrase “in the blink of an eye” inthe last paragraph probably means “______”.A. in a short timeB. in the distant futureC. only by using your own eyesD. in the state of uncertaintyCThe Taj Mahal(泰姬陵)is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world, and some western historians have noted that its architectural beauty has never been matched. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India. The Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. Its charming architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon. On a foggy morning, the Taj looks as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river. The Taj Mahal was built in memory of queen Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan’s wife, at Agra, India. It is a mausoleum(陵墓)that houses the grave of queen Mumtaz Mahal in the lower chamber(墓室). The grave of Shah Jahan was added to it later. The queen’s real name was Arjumand Banu. In the tradition of the Mughals, important ladies of the royal family were given another name at their marriage or at some other significant events in their lives, and that new name was Shahab-ud-din, and he was known as Prince Khurram before he became the king in 1628.The Taj Mahal was constructed over a period of twenty-two years, employing twenty thousand workers. It was completed in 1653 at a cost of 32,000,000 rupees. The construction documents show that its master architect was Ustad Isa, the most famous Islamic architect of his time. The documents contain the names of those employed and the list of construction materials and their origin.44. What is the Taj Mahal most famous for?A. Location.B. Sunset and moonlight.C. Function.D. Architectural beauty.45. The Taj Mahal is the grave of ______.A. Shahab-ud-din and Shah JahanB. Mumtaz Mahal and Shahab-ud-dinC. Mumtaz Mahal and Arjumand BanuD. Ustad Isa and Mumtaz Mahal46. When did the workers begin to build the TajMahal?A. In 1648.B. In 1628.C. In 1631.D. In 1635.47. We can infer from the passage that ______.A. the Taj Mahal itself glows at nightB. the Taj Mahal is far away from the Jamuna riverC. Ustad Isa designed the taj MahalD. Shah Jahan was the prince when they began tobuild the Taj MahalDNo one can believe that the over 6,300-kilometer Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “grea t” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realise that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site. The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2,000 years. It began in the rule of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty (221BC—206BC), and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.Few local people knew the 3-meter-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind human. The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people’s names are put away as remembrances. Rubbish is spread over the battlements. The brick can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but also dug out the entire base.It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation’s great civilization and learn to love it.48. Why does the writer say the Great Wall mightdisappear?A. It is useless from now on.B. It is too old to be used again.C. It will be replaced by a new one.D. Some parts of it are being destroyed.49. According to the passage, which of the followingis TRUE?A. The Great Wall was completed in Ming Dynasty.B. Not all the foreign tourists like the Great Wall.C. The first part of the Great Wall was built in221BC.D. The Qin Great Wall was protected well.50. The un derlined part “those sections far away fromthe public eyes” ( in Para. 2 ) refers to the parts ofthe Great Wall ______.A. nobody can watchB. that are too far to be seenC. that are too difficult to findD. that are not well-known to the public51. What’s the main reason of the Great Wall’s beingdestroyed?A. The local people sell the bricks for a living.B. The local people are short of cultureknowledge.C. The local people think that the Great Wall is notimportant.D. The local people need bricks and stones tobuild houses.Ⅳ. 书面表达假设你是李津,你的美国朋友Chris就读于天津某国际学校。

AMichelle was a student at University of California, Los Angeles. She is here to tell us how she feels about the city. What were the best things about Los Angeles? One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is the weather. I hate the cold and it never really gets that cold there. Plus, most of the time it’s usually sunny, which is good because I love going to the beach during the summer. There’s so much to do at the beach, but my favorite thing in L.A. was having a picnic on the sand with my friends. What were the worst things about being there?I disliked having to drive everywhere to get around because the city is so spread out. Los Angeles has a lot of traffic and sometimes it takes a long time to get somewhere close by just because the streets are so crowded. Also, a lot of people complain about the pollution.Did you have any problems there?Just the normal problems of living in any city, like watching out for pickpockets (扒手). Some people think Los Angeles has a lot of crime, but I think it’s as safe as any other city. Also, many people think driving is difficult because there is a lot of traffic and road rage (路怒症), but it just takes a little practice and a lot of patience. What are the people like in Los Angeles? There are all types of people in Los Angeles since the city is pretty diverse. For the most part, though, most of the people are friendly, calm and relaxed. Some people say that everyone in Los Angeles is beautiful, but I think that’s just a stereotype (模式化的印象).Would you go back to Los Angeles?Certainly. Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities in the world. I love the fact that it has all the nightlife and shopping of a big city, but also has access to beaches, parks, mountains and other places you can’t usually find in large cities. Scientists from Britain and Poland took cells from his nose, transplanted (移植) them into his back and re-grew his spinal cord (脊髓). Now he can walk and even drive a car. The doctors were delighted but said it was the first step in a long journey. The breakthrough came after 40 years of research by Professor Geoff Raisman, who found that cells had the possibility to repair damage to nasal (鼻腔的) nerves, the only part of the nervous system that constantly (不断地) re-grows. “The idea was to take something from an area where the nervous system can repair itself, and does so throughout life, and put it into an area that doesn’t repair itself,” Professor Raisman said.Polish doctors injected the nasal cells into Mr Fidyka’s spinal cord above and below the injury and used some nerves from his ankle to form a bridge across the damaged tissue. The nasal cells appear to have caused the spinal nerves to repair themselves.Professor Raisman achieved this with rats in the late 1990s, but this is his greatest success. “I think the moment of discovery for me was Christmas in 1997 when I first saw a rat that couldn’t control its hand put its hand out to me. That was an exciting moment, because I realised then that my belief that the nervous system could be repaired was true.”Doctors chose the easiest case for their first attempt — it might not work for others. But there is a real sense of hope that an idea once thought impossible has been realised.David Nicholls, who helped provide money for the breakthrough, said information about the breakthrough would be made available to researchers across the globe.“What you’ve got to understand is that for t hree million paralysed people in the world today, the world looks a totally brighter place than it did yesterday,” he said.28. Why did Professor Geoff Raisman choose cells from the nose?A. The nervous system in the nose can repair itself.B. Cells in the nose can be easily transplanted.C. Cells in the nose re-produce rapidly.D. He just wanted to give it a try.29. Why did the operation work for Darek Fidyka?A. The nasal cells re-produced and spread quickly.B.
