雕像高46米，加基座为93米，重达225吨（合49万磅），
是金属铸造。
铜像内部的钢铁支架由建筑师维雷勃杜克和后来建造巴黎埃菲尔铁塔闻名于世界法国工程师居斯塔夫·埃菲尔设计制作。
整座铜像以120吨的钢铁为骨架，80吨铜片为外皮，以30万只铆钉装配固定在支架上。

自由女神像腰宽10.6米，嘴宽91厘米，右手高举象征自由的火炬，长达12.8米，火炬的边沿上可以站12个人。
左手捧着一本封面刻有“1776年7月4日”字样的法律典籍，象征着这一天签署的《独立宣言》；脚下是打碎的手铐、脚镣和锁链，象征着挣脱暴政的约束和自由。
而其体态又似一位古希腊美女，使人感到亲切自然。
当夜幕降临，神像基座的灯光向上照射，将女神照得宛如一座淡青色的玉雕。
女神的风韵
女神身体微微前倾, 气宇轩昂、神态刚毅, 给人以凛然不可侵犯之感。
而其端庄丰盈的体态又似一位古希腊美女, 使人感到亲切、自然, 是一件不可多得的艺术珍品。
晨光熹微时远眺女神,在朝霞的映衬下, 显得雄伟、优雅;夜幕四合时, 神像基座的灯光向上照射, 将女神映照得宛若一座淡青色的玉雕。
从女神冠冕的窗孔中射出的灯光, 又好像在女神头上缀有一串闪着金黄色光芒的珍珠。

屈指算来至今,自由女神雕像已经历了百年多的沧桑变化和雨蚀风剥。
她原本金光闪烁、熠熠生辉的外衣,现已变成湛绿铜色。
她伫立在自由岛上,有浓阴的绿树相护,有浩淼的绿海相围,倒也令人觉得,女神的湛绿铜像和繁华的纽约已融合协调成为一体了。
不禁让我联想起了纽约市博物馆介绍纽约解说词中的一段话来:“纽约是个`大苹果’,不管是白人,还是黑人;不管是富人,还是穷人;不管是企业家,还是流浪汉都想来尝一尝。
”是的,纽约不愧为一座“世界民族博览馆”,来自世界不同角落和各种肤色的民族成千上万;在这里无记录的非法入境和违法居留者,也不计其数。
纽约成为贫苦人向往的圣地,也成了冒险家的乐园。
多少人在这里发迹致富,多少人在这里穷困潦倒。
但正是这些，才成就了今天的纽约。
这座铜像是法国人民在1886年美国独立111周年的时候送给美国人民的礼物。
1886年10月28日，美国人民为自由女神像揭幕举行了隆重的仪式。
法国人民为什么要送给美国这个礼物呢？这得从美国的独立战争和法国人民的关系说起。
美国的独立战争是正义的事业，得到国际进步力量的广泛的同情和支持。
法国、德国、英国、波兰、丹麦、瑞典、匈牙利的革命者相继来到美国参加抗英战争。
特别是法国资产阶级革命家拉法耶特，私人出资购买和装备了一艘船只，率领一些志愿人员，远渡重洋，于1777年6月抵达北美，7月，费城的大陆会议授予他少将军衔，任命他担任大陆军司令华盛顿的副官。
由于他作战勇敢，博得美国人民的好感，同华盛顿结下了亲密的友谊，1779年初，他受美国政府委托，返回法国求援。
1780年4月，他带领一支法国援军再度去美国，被委派指挥法吉尼亚州军队，在美国独立战争中立下了不朽的功勋，也加强了法美人民之间的友谊。
“自由女神”像是法美两国人民友谊的象征。
自由，美国精神
美国精神首要的是追求自由与平等。
自由精神一直是美国的旗帜，是美国梦的核心。
美国文化五大象征之一就是自由女神，自由女神像于1886年屹立于纽约湾起，它一直是对新到达的移民美国梦的许诺。
美国强调自由，强调人权，甚至他们会认为就算是一只小狗也应该有自己的权利。
所以美国人对中国吃狗肉甚是反感。
更不用说美国一直在抨击我们的计划生育政策了。
我们最常听说的是美国言论和游行示威的自由，这些在美国人看来都是基本的人权。
“不自由，毋宁死”，这是美国独立战争时期杰出政治家帕特里克〃亨利的名言。
当自由的火种在新大陆点燃，便以一种燎原之势蔓延开去。
今天，已经没有任何其他观念、没有任何其他词汇可以超过“自由”在美国的重要性。
自由是人类自古传承的梦想，是无数先辈用汗水乃至鲜血和生命换来的。
美国十三州共同签署的《独立宣言》和无数战士发起的独立战争换来了美国主权的独立和美国公民自由的权利，美国的南北战争和一个多世纪来无数追求种族自由的先驱不懈努力才打破了延续数百年的黑人奴隶制度和种族歧视的枷锁。
虽然如今依然存在许许多多的问题，依然有
许多所谓的上层人士享有特权乃至于蔑视法律的权威，但自由已成为美国人民深入骨髓的一种精神和信念。
其次，是法制精神，虽然美国标榜自由，但是自由绝不是绝对的自由，而法律允许范围内的自由。
美国是当今世界上唯一的超级大国，尽管其在世界政治、军事等方面表现出偏激、单边主义，给人一幅唯我独大、不讲理、不守法的印象，但其国内的法治良好，可以算得上是当今世界上不多的法治国家之一。
美国于1776年建国，发表了世界历史上著名的《独立宣言》，最初由北美十三个州组成，后来陆续有其他州加入进来，直到现在的五十个州。
美国经过一场激烈艰苦的独立战争后，能够马上踏上法治、立宪的道路，喊出平等、自由和民主的口号，一个重要原因是独立前的法律传统在独立后得以保持稳定和延续。
自由女神像是美国精神的代言人。
