Part One A World With Love
1 The True Meaning of Love
By Mother Teresa
Spread love everywhere you go, first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife
or husband; to a next-door neighbor... let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.
Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in
your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.
2 A Brother Like That
A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present. On
Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car,
admiring it.
“Is this your car, Mister?” he said.
Paul nodded. “My brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was [1]astounded. “You mean
your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you anything? Boy, I wish . . .” He hesitated.
Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like
that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels.
“I wish,” the boy went on, “That I could be a brother like that.”
Paul looked at the boy [2]in astonishment, then impulsively he added,“Would you like to take a
ride in my car?”
“Oh yes, I’d love that.”
After a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes aglow, said, “Mister, would you mind driving in
front of my house?”
Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors
that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those
two steps are?” the boy asked.
He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast.
He was carrying his little [3] crippled brother. He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of [4]
squeezed up against him and pointed to the car.
“There she is, [5]buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m gonna give you one just like it . . . then you can see for
yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”
Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in
beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride.
That Christmas Eve, Paul learned what Jesus meant when he said: [6]“It is more blessed to give . . .”

“He was astounded at the news”
2.in astonishment:和in surprise意思差不多,表示很惊讶。
4.squeezed up against him:squeeze
6.It is more blessed to give:
3 Waiting for the Breeze
Lie in bed, by an open window, and listen...
“No air conditioning? How can you sleep?” a friend asks, horrified. I’ve just revealed that my family
has decided to shut the air conditioner off and [1] trim our electric bill.
On this first night of our cost-cutting adventure, it’s only 85 degrees. We’re not going to suffer, but
the three kids grumble anyway.
“It’s too hot to sleep,” my 13-year-old daughter moans. “I’m about to die from this heat,” her brother
hollers down the hall. “Just try it tonight,” I tell them. In truth I’m too tired to argue for long. My face
is sweaty, but I lie quietly listening to the cricket choirs outside that remind me of childhood.
I think about Grandma, who lived to 92 and still supervised my mom’s gardening until just a few

Youth
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it
is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep
springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over
the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a
number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the
heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for
what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless

Once I left home to hitch-hike2 to California with my friend

I returned home,I was different, not so outwardly sure of myself.
I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope, who

her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren’t there.
I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me. I pointed out,“She is more patient and is neater
than I have ever been.” My mom said these were wonderful qualities, but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that

Present Tense Messages
You may find yourself daunted by the many things you need
to do in order to reach your goals. It just seems overwhelming to
become the success that you secretly desire for. Your mind gets
caught up in an endless stream of worry.
What may be helpful is to concentrate on steps you can take
in the present. If you find yourself becoming stuck, stop and say,
“What can I do right now?” Change your internal talk from a
future anxiety ridden one to one that is about the more
manageable present. You cannot control what will happen in the
future but you can take the necessary steps now that will build a
better tomorrow. Taking the necessary steps require you to focus
your thoughts and inner talk on Now.

1. Beauty is Meaningless
A young man sees a sunset and, unable to understand or to express the emotion
that it rouses in him, concludes that it must be the gateway to a world that lies
beyond. It is difficult for any of us in moments of intense aesthetic experience to
resist the suggestion that we are catching a glimpse of a light that shines down
to us from a different realm of existence, different and, because the experience
is intensely moving, in some way higher. And, though the gleams blind and
dazzle, yet they do convey a hint of beauty and serenity greater than we have
known or imagined. Greater too than we can describe, for language, which was
invented to convey the meanings of this world, cannot readily be fitted to the
uses of another.
