The company, Floors &. More, has four locations, each in a different city. All the salespeople have cubicles, though they spend most of their time madding sales presentations in people’s homes. Cal’s job is to proce ss the salespeople’s orders. When a problem-such as a back order-comes up, he puts the paperwork back on the appropriate person’s desk. Cal has anyone suggested that he do so. He sometimes runs out of things to do. When that happens, he waits in a cubicle until something comes up.In the showroom, the receptionist, Angelica, also has a cubicle. Angelica answers all incoming calls. The phone rings 10 to 20 times per hour. Most calls are for the salespeople. Angelica takes messages (usually just a name and number) for the absent salespeople. Ifshowroom customers have a question, they often must wait until Angelica is between phone calls. Sometimes, if a caller isn’t someone she knows, she puts the call on hold and answers a question with the phone resting on her shoulder.Occasionally customers in the showroom approach Cal with a question. Sometimes he just says, “I'm not a salesperson; I can’t help you.” At other times, Cal tells them they’ll have to wait for Angelica or make an appointment with one of the salespeople. The salespeople, however, do not have telephones with them when they are out of the showroom, and Angelica does not schedule appointments for them.26. What does Cal do as a sales support associate?A. Cal is Angelica’s _______.A. external customerB. internal customerC. service provider Passage TwoKim was in danger of being fired from her job for she was such a perfectionist that she’d try to cover up her mistakes or argue with her boss. What should she do to overcome her problem? The most dramatic and enduring life changes often occur through community-based initiatives, like Weight Watchers or Alcoholics Anonymous, where there are groups of people invested in your success and for whom you feel responsible. It makes sense to apply the same principles that have been so successful in dealing with self-destructive habits when creating your “dream team” for personal growth.Your team works best with about five people, all of whom care enough about you to be ruthlessly honest. Select people with various backgrounds. Not only will a diverse group come up with original solutions, they are more likely to offer networks and efforts you may not have access to yourself. Kim, for example, invited both a trusted colleague and her boss to join her team. The role you play is a listener to their criticisms, though it’s not always easy. Kim argued with her team so much that her colleague finally said, “Look, if you’re going to ask for my advice and always disagree with it, it' s not worth my making the effort to give it.” You can ask yourteam members to clarify themselves, but do not contradict them, even if you feel a team member has made a terrible misjudgment. This is his “gift”to you. And if four out of five people are giving you the same gift, then they are more likely to point out something right. In a word, by reaching out to your team with generosity when seeking their counsels, you’ll be rewarded with the key to your problem.31. What is the passage mainly about?A. It compares the difference between team work and individual work.B. It analyzes people who may play different roles in your entire life.C. It suggests you establish a team of advisors to help you make life changes.32. Why do successful life changes often happen on the basis of teams? Because ______.A. you are suppor ted by team members and you can’t let them downB. people can help each other to get rid of different shortcomingsC. your team members can avoid making any misjudgment on you33. Your “dream team” targets on ______.A. establishing your self-esteemB. improving your personalityC. developing your work ability34. A dream team should show diversity in its membership because ______.A. everyone has a unique role in the teamB. they can be honest and critical to youC. the team will be creative and resourceful35. When seeking advices from your team, you shouldA. turn them down immediatelyB. respect their criticismsC. correct a misjudgmentPart V TRANSLATION (20 points, 5 points each)Translate the following sentences into Chinese.36. Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Questions 21~25 are based on the following passage.Beverly Schnell is a middle-aged woman who lives alone in a nice old house near Milwaukee. The house needs work. It has a vacant living space on the second floor. So Schnell decided to rent the space to someone who could do repairs. In exchange, she would cut the rent. She placed an ad in a local paler that read: “Apartment for rent, one bedroom, and electric included, mature Christian handyman.” Then the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council —which looks through classified ads trying to find discriminatory rental or sales ads—ran to a state agency and tattled on Schnell. For what? For starters, sex discrimination. Th at’s because she used the term “handyman”. And religious dis crimination because she stated “mature Christian handyman”.Schnell found herself accused by the state of violating Wisconsin’s fair-housing law, the ad snoops offered a deal. They would drop the case. But it would cost her $ 500 for their lawy er’s fees and $ 50 for their effort. Now she knows better. She was found guilty and ordered to pay the housing council “reasonable attorney’s fees”, which the council now estimates at $ 8000. Schnell hasn’t much choice but to appeal, and she still hasn’t found someone to pound in a few nails.21. The best title of the passage is ______.A. Rent ControlB. Beverly SchnellC. How to Rent a HouseD. AccusingQuestions 26~30 are based on the following passage. We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when 1 broke up with H elen?”“When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my l uck?” “And Pau—why didn’t I pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends—or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You are a lucky dog.” Is he really on your side? If he says, “You’re a lucky guy,”that’s being friendly. But “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe hedoesn’t see i t himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.“Just think of all the thi ngs you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. T could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving peo ple in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the r eal meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says square with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.26. The author ______ when he recalls some things that happened between him and hiss friends.A. feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to himB. feels he may not have “read” his friends’ true feelings correctlyC. thinks it was a mistake to have broken up with his friendsD. is sorry that his friends let him down27. From the sentence “You’re a lucky dog”, we can conclude that ______.A. the speaker of this sentence is just being friendlyB. it means the same as “You’re a luck y guy”C. the word “dog” s houldn’t be applied to peopleD. sometimes the words used by a speaker give a clue to the feeling behind the words28. The main purpose of this passage is to tell us how to ______.A. avoid mistakes about money and friendsB. size up peopleC. avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell youD. keep people friendly without trusting them29. In listening to a person the important thing is ______.A. to notice his tone, his posture and the look in his eyesB. to listen to how he pronounces his wordsC. to check his words against his manner, his tone of voice and his postureD. not to believe what he says30.
