1727年，他有过一次灵性的奇异经历，认识到上帝的绝 对权威和人对上帝的依靠。同年年底，应外祖父斯托达 （Solomon Stoddard）牧师主理的教会之邀，在麻萨诸塞 州的北安普敦出任圣公会副牧师。斯托达讲道有能力，声 誉也很好，却主张「半途信约」（Half-Way Covenant）， 意即明知道某人尚未得救，却可以守圣餐，但如此一来， 信与不信的界限无形中消失、混杂了，既然圣与俗彷佛一 体，基督徒也就没有必要分别出来过圣洁生活，以致信徒 反应淡漠，而更大多数是不冷不热。1729年，外祖父斯托 达去世，他便受命为北安普敦出圣公会的主任牧师。他和 当地其他的牧师，感受到教会昏睡的情形，不止信仰生活 就连道德生活也松懈不堪，他因对人的灵魂极其关心，多 次想改革这种情况。

The Great Awakening 大觉醒运动
大觉醒运动是美国的一场思想启蒙运动，是反对宗教专制，争取信仰自由的思想 解放运动。大觉醒运动于1740年达到颠峰，北安普敦再度成为中心，爱德华滋也成为 中心人物。他讲道的消息一传出，几十里内的工人马上放下工具，田野没有人耕作， 听众常多达数千人，教堂容纳不下，都必须在户外讲道，人们成群结队来接受基督教。
