Minutes after the last movie ended
yesterday at the Plaza Theater, employees
were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering
coke cups. It was a scene that had been
repeated many times in the theater’s
75-year history. This time, however, the
cleanup was a little different. As one group
of workers carried out the rubbish, another
group began removing seats and other theater
equipment in preparation for the
building’s end.
The film classic The Last Picture Show was
the last movie shown in the old theater.
Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the
250 seats were filled with teary-eyed
audience wanting to say good-be to the old
building. Theater owner Ed Bradford said he
chose the movie because it seemed
appropriate. The movie is set in a small town
where the only movie theater is preparing to
close down.
Bradford said that large modern theaters
in the city made it impossible for the Plaza
to compete. He added that the theater’s
location(位置) was also a reason. “This
used to be the center of town,” he said.
“Now the area is mostly office buildings
and warehouses.”
Last week some city officials suggested
the city might be interested in turning the
old theater into a museum and public meeting

2014年英语试题全卷立足于体现英语课程改革的基本精神，坚持注重基础、突出能力，试题“平稳”。具有如下主要特点：
1．重点突出，能力倾向明显
仔细研析，我们不难发现今年试题有一个新的突破：在不影响关键信息的前提下，阅读材料中出现个别考纲上没有的单词，而且没有加注汉语。这实际上是对学生模糊容忍度（tolerance of ambiguity）的考查，在阅读过程中能容忍一定的生词是一种能力，适当的模糊容忍度是学生阅读理解所必需的。容忍一定生词的阅读具有真实性。这对高中英语阅读教学有较好的导向作用。
“阅读理解”体裁风格多样，涵盖了描写、叙述、应用、说明、议论各种文体，包括了广告、故事、新闻报道、科普等题材。文章内容新、时代感强，语言真实地道、可读性强，与考生的认知水平一致。A篇为志愿者招募海报，B篇是童年趣事，C篇是9岁女童勇敢救父的新闻报道，D篇是关于部分青年的“夜猫子”生活模式分析，E篇涉及性别行为差异研究。这些含有丰富信息量的材料，既让考生在阅读过程中充分体验地道的英语，又能引发考生的语言行为，在答题过程中尽显各类阅读能力。试题设置灵活，能够较为全面地考查考生获取和处理各个层次信息的能力，对考生的推理、判断、分析、综合、归纳和解决问题的能力也能有较好的考查。阅读理解试题问题简洁、清楚，只要考生真正读懂文章就能正确作答。
