SHEET 2.

1. The world’s richest countries, which have contributed by far the most to

the atmospheric changes linked to global warming, are already spending billions of

dollars to limit their own risks from its worst consequences, like drought and rising

seas. But despite longstanding treaty commitments to help poor countries deal with

warming, these industrial powers are spending just tens of millions of dollars on ways

to limit climate and coastal hazards in the world’s most vulnerable regions—most of

them close to the equator and overwhelmingly poor. Over the last few decades,

as scientists have intensified their study of the human effects on climate and of the

effects of climate change on humans, a common theme has emerged: in both respects,

the world is a very unequal place. In almost every instance, the people most at

risk from climate change live in countries that have contributed the least to the

atmospheric buildup of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases linked to the

recent warming of the planet. Those most vulnerable countries also tend to be the

poorest. And the countries that face the least harm—and that are best equipped to deal

with the harm they do face—tend to be the richest.

2. The report says lack of water in the future may result in several

problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking

waters not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of

diseases, such as cholera, which are carried in water. Lack of water may also result in

more international conflict. Countries may have to compete for water in the future.

Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. This is

true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan, and Iraq. And the report says

lack of water would affect the ability of developing to improve their economies. This

is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.

The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water

problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose.

Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use

less water of agriculture.

Dear Sirs, Yesterday afternoon about three o’clock, I came to

your shop with my friend for some souvenirs. One of your shop assistants, whose

badge number was 15, if I remember right, was asked to show some embroidered

table cloth. My friend wants to have a good look before making up her mind to buy.

But the shop assistant turned a deaf ear to our request and walked away murmuring in

a sarcastic manner. We feel embarrassed to meet with such an awkward occasion.

We wish you would look into this unsatisfactory service and take steps to prevent

such kind of offensive conduct. I think it is the shop assistant’s duty either to do what

was asked or to explain why he was unable to comply with such a request.

Yours sincerely, Li Ming

Working at nonstandard times-evenings, nights, or weekends-is taking its toll on

American families. [1]One-fifth of all employed Americans work variable or rotating shifts, and

The consequences of working irregular hours vary according to gender, economic level, and

0 We have to realize how old, how very old, we are. Nations are classified as "aged"

when they have 7 per cent or more of their people aged 65 or above, and by about 1970

every one of the advanced countries had become like this. Of the really ancient societies,

with over 13 per cent above 65, all are in Northwestern Europe. We know that we are

getting even older, and that the nearer a society approximates to zero population growth,

the older its population is likely to be--at least, for any future that concerns us now.

To these now familiar facts a number of further facts may be added, some of them only

Shoppers who have flocked to online stores for their holiday shopping are losing privacy with

every mouse click, according to a new report.

[1] The study by the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center scrutinized (仔细审查) privacy policies on 100 of the most popular online shopping sites and compared those

policies with a set of basic privacy principles that have come to be known as “fair information

practices.”

[2]The group found that none of the 100 sites met all of the basic criteria for privacy

protection, which include giving notice of what information is collected and how it is used,

offering consumers a choice over whether the information will be used in certain ways, allowing

access to data that give consumers a chance to see and correct the information collected, and

Every weekend in Britain, DIY shops are always very busy. A large number of people spend

their weekends making their homes better instead of relaxing!

DIY projects are very popular in Britain and there are lots of TV programmes which show

people how they can improve their homes.

Some people like simple (简单的) decorating. They often put up wall-paper and paint walls, but

there are a lot of different DIY projects that people decide to take on, from changing the new floor

to setting a new shower.

Unluckily, people bite off more than they can chew (不自量力), and try to take on jobs which

end in DIY disasters (灾难). For example, the shops often tell their customers that anything

electrical (电的) should be done by an electrician. However, many people don’t care about this

warning and put themselves in danger.
