Most people have had a dog or wanted one as their companion at some time in their liv es. If you are thing of buying a dog, however, you should first decide what sort of compa nion you need and whether the dog is likely to be happy in the surroundings you can pr ovide. Specialists’advice is useful to help you choose the most suitable kind of dog. But in part the decision depends on common sense. Different dogs were originally developed to perform specific tasks. So, if you want a dog to protect you or your house, for exampl e, you should choose the one that has the right size and characteristics. You must also be ready to devote a great deal of time to training the dog when it is young and give it th e exercise it needs through out its life, unless you live in the countryside and can let it ru n freely. Dogs are demanding pets. Cats love the house and so are satisfactory with their place where it is secure, but a dog is loyal to its master and consequently wants him to s how proof of his affection. The best time to buy a baby dog is when it is between 6 and 8 weeks old so that it can transfer its love from its mother to its master. If baby dogs ha ve not established a relationship with the human being until they are over three months o ld, their strong relationship will always be with dogs. They are likely to be shy when they are brought out into the world to become good pets.

A. It must be trained so that it won’t bite.

B. It demands more food and space.

D. It must be looked after carefully.

4. Why is it advised to buy a baby dog under three months old?

A. It’s easier to buy a b aby dog under three months old.

D. It’s esier for them to form a relationship with their masters.

5. The word “affection”(Line 11) means _____ .

A. love

B. effect

C. tie

D. relationship

难点:

1. Be likely to do sth: It is likely that……

She devotes hersel

f to teachin

g children.

3. demanding:

解析:从这句话:a dog is loyal to master and consequently wants him to show proof of his affection.

5. A

The young people who talk of the village as being “dead” are talking nothing but nonse nse, as in their hearts they must surely know.

No, the village is not dead. There is more life in it now than there ever was. But it seems that “village life”is dea d. Gone for ever. It began to decline about a hundred years ago. When many girls left home to go into service in town many miles away, and men also le ft home in increasing numbers in search of work, and home was where work was. There a re still a number of people alive today who can remember what “village life” meant in t he early years of the present century. It meant finding your entertainment in the village of within walking distance of it. It meant housewives tied to the home all day and every da y. It meant going to bed early to save lamp-oil and coal.

Then came the First World War and the Second World War. After each war, new ideas, ne w attitudes, new trades and occupations were revealed to villagers. The long-established or der of society was no longer taken for granted. Electricity and the motorcar were steadily operating to make “village life” and “town life” almost alike. Now with the highly deve loped science and technology and high-level social welfare for all, there is no point whate ver in talking an y longer about “village life.” It is just life, and a better life.

Finally, if we have any doubts about the future, or about the many changes which we hav e seen in our lives, we have only to look in at the school playground any mid-morning; o r see the children as they walk homeward in little groups. Obviously there children are bet ter fed, better clothed, better educated, healthier, prettier and happier than any generation of children that ever before walked the village street.

C. “village life” today is rather uninteresting

D. “village life” today is no longer like what it used to be

A. there is no end to the talking about ...

B. it is harmful to talk about ...

D. there is no reason for talking about ...

5. From the pas sage we can see that the writer’s attitude toward “village life” is ____

6. social welfare:

3. A

The time of year at which you are born has an enduring influence on levels of optimism and self-reported luck, according to a research by British and Swedish scientists. May was the luckiest month in which to be born, with 50 percent of those born then considering themselves lucky, while October was the least lucky month, with just 43 percent claiming good fortune. The findings add to growing evidence that the phenomenon of luck is not all down to chance, but is affected by a person’s general disposition. Other researc h has shown that whether people think themselves fortunate depends less on objective success than on having a “glass half-full” or “half-empty” approach to life. “What we are seeing suggests that something is influencing how people perceive their luckiness. My hypothesis is that people create their own luck by traits such as optimism, that luck is a psychological phenomenon rather than a matter of blind chance,” said Professor Richard Wiseman, who led the research. The pattern of the result, with those born in spring and in summer reporting themselves luckier than those born in autumn or winter, could have two potential explanations, Professor Wiseman said. 1.According to the passage, whether people think themselves lucky or not depends on the following factors EXCEPT _______. A. one’s objective success B. one’s general disposition C. one’s attitude to life D. one’s place of birth

2011.11.05 PartⅠReading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: The reflective towers of New York City, which is on the Atlantic migrating(迁徙的)route , can be deadly for birds. “We live in an age of glass,”said https://www.360docs.net/doc/107491538.html,urel, an architect.(76)“It can be a perfect mirror in certain lights, and the larger the glass, the more dangerous it is.” About 90,000 birds are killed by flying into building in the city each year. Often, they strike the lower levels of glass towers after searching for food in nearby parks. Such crashes are the second-leading cause of death for migrating birds, after habitat(栖息地)loss, with an estimated number of death ranging up to a billion a year. (77)As glass office and apartment towers have increased in the last decade, so, too, have calls to make them less deadly to birds. San Francisco adopted bird-safety standard for new building in July. The United States Green Building Council, a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally conscious buildings, will introduce a bird-safety credit this as part of its environmental certification process. There are no easy fixes, however. A few researchers are exploring glass designs that use ultraviolet(紫外线的)signals, but they are still in their infancy. Covers, dot patterns, shades and net are the main options available. Often, only one section of a building needs to be changed. “You don't necessarily have to treat every window,”https://www.360docs.net/doc/107491538.html,urel said. “It would be too expensive to do the whole building.”The Jacob Convention Center, which has been undergoing alterations, is the most recent building to voluntarily correct the problem of bird crashes. The architects used less reflective glass and dot patterns. 1. What is the main idea of the passage? A. New York is a city of glass towers. B. Glass tower are dangerous for migrating birds. C. New York adopted new safety standards for buildings. D. Glass towers are a new trend in the United States. 2. What is the number one cause of death for migrating birds? A. Climate change B. Habitat loss C. Lack of food D. Crashing into buildings. 3. What does the word “fixes”in the third paragraph probably mean? A. Choices B. Explanations C. Solutions D. Developments 4. _____are used in the alteration of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. A. Dot patterns B. Shades C. Nets D. Covers 5. Which of the fowling statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. In many cases, the whole building needs to be altered to prevent bird crashes. B. The Jacob K.Javits Convention Center is the first building to deal with the problem of bird crashes. C. About 90,000 birds are killed due to habitat loss in New York City each year. D. Unfortunately, glass designs that use ultraviolet signals are still in their early stages. Passage 2 Question 6 to 10 are based on the fowling passage: Today's students have grown up hearing more about Bill Gates than F.D.R., and they live in a world where amazing innovations(革新)are common. The current 18-year-olds, after all, were 8 when Google was founded by two students at Stanford; Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was Harvard and they were entering high school. Having grown up digital(数字的),they are impatient to get on with life. The easiest way to find kids like these is to check in on entrepreneurship(企业家才能)education, in which colleges and universities try to prepare their students to recognize opportunities and seize them.
