GDP即英文（gross domestic product）的缩写，也就是国内生产总值。它是对一国（地区）经济在核算期内所有常住单位生产的最终产品总量的度量，常常被看成显示一个国家（地区）经济状况的一个重要指标。生产过程中的新增加值，包括劳动者新创造的价值和固定资产的磨损价值，但不包含生产过程中作为中间投入的价值；在实物构成上，是当期生产的最终产品，包含用于消费、积累及净出口的产品，但不包含各种被其他部门消耗的中间产品。 GDP的测算有三种方法：生产法：GDP＝∑各产业部门的总产出－∑各产业部门的中间消耗：收入法：GDP＝∑各产业部门劳动者报酬＋∑各产业部门固定资产折旧＋∑各产业部门生产税净额＋∑各产业部门营业利润；支出法：GDP＝总消费＋总投资＋净出口。

GNP是指一个国家（或地区）所有国民在一定时期内新生产的产品和服务价值的总和。GNP是按国民原则核算的，只要是本国（或地区）居民，无论是否在本国境内（或地区内）居住，其生产和经营活动新创造的增加值都应该计算在内。比方说，我国的居民通过劳务输出在境外所获得的收入就应该计算在GNP中。
GDP是指一个国家（或地区）在一定时期内所有常住单位生产经营活动的全部最终成果。GDP是按国土原则核算的生产经营的最终成果。比方说，外资企业在中国境内创造的增加值就应该计算在GDP中。
GNP与GDP的关系是：GNP等于GDP加上本国投在国外的资本和劳务的收入再减去外国投在本国的资本和劳务的收入。以2001年为例，当年我国GDP为95933亿元，GNP为94346亿元，两者差额为1587亿元，也就是说2001年，外商来华投资和来华打工新增加的价值之和比中国人在国外投资和劳务输出新增的价值之和多1587亿元。
从1985年起，我国经国务院批准建立了国民经济核算体系，正式采用GDP对国民经济运行结果进行核算。目前，我们采用的是联合国1993年国民经济核算体系（SNA）的方法，并采取国家统计局统一制定方法制度，各级政府统计局分别核算其国内生产总值的分级核算方法。现在讲经济总量一般用的是GDP指标。
