The 2023 CET-4 Test Was Super Tough!
Hey guys! I'm just a little kid but my big brother took the
December 2023 CET-4 exam to try to get into a good university.
He let me take a peek at the test questions after he was done and
wow, they looked really hard! I'll tell you all about what was on
the test.
The listening section was first. My brother said some of the
recordings were pretty clear but others had all sorts of weird
accents and background noise that made them almost
impossible to understand. There was one recording about a lady
talking about her cooking habits that seemed straightforward
enough. But then another one was all about some super
complicated science experiment and my brother could barely
follow any of the technical words. Yikes!
Next up was the reading section and boy was it a doozy! The
passages were just packed full of big fancy vocabulary words
that even made my brother's head spin. One passage was about the history of some ancient civilization. Another rambled on and
on about the differences between eastern and western
philosophies. And the one my brother dreaded most was this
crazy long reading about theoretical physics concepts like black
holes and gravitational waves. He said it was like it was written in
a different language! My brother had to make his best guess on
most of the questions because he could barely understand the
passages at all.
The writing section is what really did my brother in though.
The question asked test takers to choose between two opposite
points of view and write a coherent, well-structured essay
arguing for one side or the other using specific examples and
evidence. The two viewpoints were: 1) Social media is an
invaluable tool for connecting people and spreading important
information, or 2) Social media is a pernicious threat that
promotes disinformation, decreases productivity, and erodes
interpersonal relationships.
Those are both pretty complex concepts for an adult, never
mind a 22-year-old college student still trying to figure out life!
My brother didn't know which side to argue for because he could
see pros and cons to both viewpoints. He ended up just kind of
winging it and wrote a so-so essay that tried to argue a middle ground between the two extremes. Hopefully the graders go
easy on him!
After sweating through the writing section, my poor brother
still had the translation part left to go. He had to translate a few
harrowing paragraphs from English to Chinese about uber
technical topics like gene editing, composite nanomaterials, and
cloud computing security protocols. Most of the vocabulary was
way over his head so he gave a valient effort but definitely got a
lot of those questions wrong.
By the time he finished, my brother looked like a wet dishrag!
He was completely mentally drained and discouraged because
he felt like he totally bombed the test. I gave him a big hug and
lots of encouragement though. I mean scoring well on the CET-4
is really tough and he was just doing his best. My brother is still
really smart, kind, and works incredibly hard. I'm positive he'll get
into a great school because he has so many amazing qualities
beyond just test scores.
Taking big standardized tests like the CET-4 sounds like it
totally stinks! I'm just a little kid but I'm going to keep hitting the
books and learning English because those types of exams are
probably only going to get harder as I get older. But no matter
what, I'll never let a bad test day get me down because there's way more to life than acing a bunch of exam questions. Keeping
a positive attitude and believing in yourself is what really matters
in the end. Hang in there guys, you got this!

Oh my goodness! The English Four Level Test in December
