２００４年我们共收到稿件１２２９５篇，其中包括论著、读者来信、视点、医学影像、文献综述、述评等。
首先，由我本人对所有投来的稿件进行审核。
如果我认为一篇稿件不适合在我们的杂志上刊登，就立即退给作者，建议改投其他杂志。
这一过程大约要退掉１０％的稿件。
在这个过程中，经常被退掉的稿件往往是那些少见病例的病例报告，论文并没有揭示疾病的生物学原理，仅仅是病例比较特殊而已。
如果我认为稿件值得进一步考虑的话，就把这些稿件按专业分配给特约副总编辑。
我们编辑部有９位特约副总编辑，他们都是当地的医学专家，他们的专业领域分别是：心血管疾病、感染性疾病、肿瘤、胃肠病、围产医学、内分泌、门诊实践、卫生政策和血管疾病。
特约副总编辑阅读稿件之后，如果他认为论文有可能发表，就把稿件交给同行专家审稿；如果他认为不可能刊出，就把稿件交给执行副总编辑。
执行副总编辑是编辑部的全日制工作人员，如果他也认同特约副总编辑的意见，那么就退掉稿件，如果他有不同意见，就把稿件交给同行专家审阅。
我们要求审稿人在审稿期间对稿件的内容保密，如果没有得到编辑部的许可，审稿人不能复印稿件，不能把稿件给别人看。
审稿人不能跟作者本人或别人讨论他们的审稿意见。
如果审稿人和论文作者有个人的、专业上或经济上的利益冲突，一定要立即打电话告诉编辑部。
２００４年我们共向审稿人发出了４３３５份稿件。
我们要求审稿人在２周内审完并将稿件发回编辑部。
按时审回的占５６％，逾期１周审回的占２４％，逾期１周以上审回的稿件占１５％。
有３％的稿件送审后再也没有返回，我们将这样的审稿人从审稿人名单里除掉，以后不再找他审稿。
送审的稿件返回以后，论文最终是否发表，由我们的编辑决定，而不是由审稿人决定。
