They said, "We saw her in the street."
He said, "I had eaten an apple before supper. " Julie said, "I will do it after class."
There are some cases in which we don’t need to change the tense into indirect speech.
When direct speech is about: a) a truth 真理 b) a timetable 时间表 c) a saying/proverb/quotation 格言/引用语 d) an adverbial indicating the past 含有具 体的过去时间状语

"I need to pack up my things in the suitcase very quickly," the girl said. 4. "Why did you choose your diary and old letters?" Her father asked her.

直接引语如果是疑问句，变为间接引语时，主语的人称、 时态和状语等也要做相应的变化。 (1). 要把疑问语序变为陈述句语序（主语在谓语的前面）。 (2). 直接引语如果是特殊疑问句，变为间接引语时，仍用原 来的疑问词引导。 (3). 直接引语如果是是一般疑问句时，变为间接引语时，原 问句变成由连词if / whether 引导的宾语从句。
• direct speech : 直接引述别人的原话。 • indirect speech : 用自己的话转述别人的话。
陈述句的变化
• (1) "I don't want to set down a series of fact in a diary," said Anne. (Direct speech)

• 形式：
间接引语无引号，是由that引导宾语从句（ that可省略）。
• 人称变化：
一随主，二随宾，第三人称不更新。
• 时态的变化：
如主句的谓语动词是现在时，从句的时态无需变化。 如主句的谓语动词是一般过去时，从句的时态往过去倒推 一个时态。

直接引语 “I don't want to use the knife,” said Anne. The boy said, "I'm using a knife." Cella said, "I have not heard from John since May."
They said they had seen her in the street.
He said he had eaten an apple before supper. Julie said that she would do it after class.
过去完成时不变
一般将来时 to 过去将来时
He told Kate that her sister was crying. (Indirect speech)
(3) Mr Smith said, “Jack has finished his homework before supper.” (Direct speech)
Mr Smith said that Jack had finished his homework before supper. (Indirect speech)
