最新商务英语(BEC)中级考试真题及答案

最新商务英语(BEC)中级考试真题及答案THE ART OF PERSUASION'Let me send you our brochure'is probably the most commonly used phrase in business. But all too often,it can spell the end of a customer enquiry because many brochures appear to be produced not to clarify and to excite but to confuse. So what goes wrong and how can it be put right?Too often, businesses fail to ask themselves critical questions like,'Who will the brochure be sent to?''What do we want to achieve with it?'The truth is that a brochure has usually been produced for no other reason than that the competition has one. However, with a little research,it often transpires that what the client wants is a mixture:part mail shot, part glossy corporate brochure and part product catalogue-a combination rarely found. Having said that, the budget is likely to be finite. There may not be enough money to meet all three marketing needs,so the first task is to plan the brochure, taking into account the most significant of these. The other requirements will have to be met in a different way. After all, introducing the company's product range to new customers by mail is a different task from selling a new season's collection to existing customers. The second task is to get the content right.In95per cent of cases, a company will hire a designer to oversee the layout,so the final product looks stylish, interesting and professional;but they don't get a copywriter or someone with the right expertise to produce the text, or at least tidy it up-and this shows.A bigger failing is to produce a brochure that is not customer focused.Your brochure should cover areas of interest to the customer, concentrating on the benefits of buying from you.Instead, thousands of brochures start with a history lesson,'Founded in1987,we have been selling our products..I can assure you that customers are never going to say to themselves,'They've been around for20years-I'll buy from them.'It's not how longyou've been in business that counts,it's what you've done in that time. The important point to get across at the beginning is that you have a good track record.Once this has been established, the rest of the brochure should aim to convince customers that your products are the best on the market. It is helpful with content to get inside the customer's head.If your audience is young and trendy,be creative and colourful. As always, create a list of the benefits that potential customers would gain from doing business with you,for example, product quality, breadth of range, expertise of staff and so on.But remember that it isnot enough just to state these;in order to persuade, they need to be spelt out.One possibility is to quote recommendations from existing customers. This also makes the brochure personal to you, rather than it simply being a set of suppliers'photographs with your name on the front. At the design stage, there are many production features that can distinguish your brochure from the run of the mill. You may think that things like cutouts or pop-ups will do this for you and thus make you stand out,or you may think they just look like designer whims that add cost.Go through all the options in detail. One of them might be that all-important magical ingredient.13What point does the writer make about brochures in the first paragraph?A Customer expectations of them are too high.B They ought to be more straightforward in design.C Insufficient thought tends to go into producing them.D Companies should ensure they use them more widely.14The writer's advice to companies in the second paragraph is toA produce a brochure to advertise new product lines.B use a brochure to extend the customer base.C accept that a brochure cannot fulfil every objective.D aim to get a bigger budget allocation for producing brochures.15In the third paragraph, which of the following does the writer say would improve the majority of brochures?A better language and expressionB better overall appearanceC more up-to-date contentD more product information16In the introduction to a brochure, the writer advises companies to focus onA their understanding of the business environment.B the range of products they offer.C their unique market position.D the reputation they have built up.17When discussing brochure content in the fifth paragraph, the writer reminds companies toA consider old customers as well as new ones.B provide support for the claims they make.C avoid using their own photographs.D include details of quality certification.18What does'run of the mill'in line67mean?A eye-catchingB complicatedC stylishD ordinary13题问第一段中作者对广告手册所做的观点是什么。

Could you advertise for two experienced translators in the newspapers? It is urgent.PART TWONear the end of 1994, people suddenly become "rich‘’, buying a lot of things. We have received the report that the real hourly wages of workers become even less ,so they do not have enough money to buy so many things. Although the employment is rising towards the end of 1994 ,the growth is very slow. Therefore ,not many people find jobs to earn enough money to buy goods. Then where does the big consumer confidence come from? We have discovered that people overspend with various credit cards ,buying goods. And they are not worried about returning the borrowed money. This it is our turn to be concerned about this kind of consumer confidence.。

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice. This section totals 20 points, two points for each question.Questions 41 to 50 are based on the following passage.1Ivester, a factory foreman’s s on and former accountant, stepped in smoothly to run Coca-Cola as CEO following the death of champion wealth creator Roberto Goizueta. Early in hisjob as Coke’s chief, Goizueta had recognized Ivester’s drive, commenting that he was the hardest-working man he had ever met. Together the two changed the company’s operations and capital structure to maximize shareholder value.2Both of Ivester’s parents were factory workers from a tiny mill town in Georgia. His parents were children of the depression, he recal ls, ‘strong savers, very strong religious values,’ and had very high expectations for their only son. If he got an A, his father would say, ‘They giveA pluses, don’t they?’3Dough Ivester is the guy who for nearly two years worked constantly to provide essential support to Roberto Goizueta as he not only turned Coca-Cola around but made it into a powerhouse. If you want to know just how driven Ivester is, know that more than a decade ago he set himself the goal of becoming the CEO and chairman of Coca-Cola. Then he put on paper the dates by which he intended to do that.4By comparison with Goizueta, Ivester is an accountant by training, an introvert by nature. He worked systematically to obtain the breadth needed to be a modern chief executive –getting media coaching and spending three year’s worth of Saturdays, six hours at a time, being tutored in marketing.5He is big on discipline, which to him means: be where you’re suppo sed to be. Dress the part (he is opposed to casual Fridays). Return phone calls promptly (employees know never to get too far away from their office voice-mail, even on weekends). Still, when directing his troops, he asks them to set ‘aspirations’ (difficult targets).6Hierarchy is out –it slows everything down; he communicates freely with people at all levels. The‘conventional’desk job is also out. Ivester prefers that employees think of themselves as knowledge workers –their office is the information they carry around with them, supported by technology that allows them to work anywhere. This really matters when your business is as large as Coke’s, which gets 80% of its profit from overseas.7At Coke, business planning is no longer an annual ritual but a continual discussion –sometimes via voice-mail – among top executives. Technology is not just nice; it’s crucial.Huge volumes of information don’t frighten Ivester; he insists that they are necessary for ‘real time’decision-making. With past-generation exe cutives, their style was more ‘don’t bring me your problems, bring me your solutions,’ says Tim Haas, Senior Vice President and Head of Latin America. ‘Dough thrives on finding the solutions.’‘In a world this complicated and fast-moving, a CEO can’t afford to sit in the executive suite and guess,’Ivester says. He believes that many of America’s executives ‘are getting terribly isolated.’41. The writer says that ‘Goizueta had recognized Ivester’s drive’ (Paragraph 1). What does drivemean?A. Talent.B. Genius.C. Energy.D. Mind.42. What is Dough Ivester’s previous job?A. Foreman.B. Accountant.C. Teacher.D. CEO.43. ‘They give A pluses, don’t they?’ (Paragraph 2) Who is Ivester’s father referring to when hesays they?A. Ivester’s teachers.B. Ivester’s parents.C. Ivester’s classmates.D. Ivester’s colleagues.44. Which of the following words refers to a time of high unemployment and poverty?(Paragraph 2)A. Mill.B. Religion.C. Saver.D. Depression.45. Which of the following words means ‘very determined to succeed’? (Paragraph 3)A. Powerhouse.B. Constantly.C. Driven.D. Set.46. What does the sentence ‘Dress the part (he is opposed to casual Fridays)’? (Paragraph 5)A. Always wear uniforms at work.B. Always wear casually at work.C. Always dress properly for work.D. Always dress the way you like.47. Where does Coca-Cola’s most profits come from?A. Americas.B. Europe.C. Asia.D. Overseas.48. Ivester believes that many American executives ‘are getting terribly isolated.’ What is Ivesterdoing to avoid becoming cut off from his staff?A. Considering everything in terms of people at all levels.B. Satisfying what people at all levels require.C. Working with people at all levels.D. Communicating freely with people at all levels.49. Which of the following words means ‘Get a feeling of satisfaction from doing something’?(Paragraph 7)A. Afford.B. Thrive.C. Isolate.D. Insist.50. The most suitable title for this passage may be _______.A. President of Coca-ColaB. Chief Executives of Coca-ColaC. The Real Douglas IvesterD. Focus on Douglas IvesterQuestions 51 to 60 are based on the following passage.1Steve Redwood, a London-based management consultant with Price Waterhouse, tells of a client who had brought together a team from eight different countries to work on a project.‘T he national stereotypes applied,’ he says. ‘The people from Switzerland and Germany were mainly interested in the way the project organized. The people from Spain took a much more intuitive approach. The British had a high level of skepticism about whether the whole thing really mattered. Language was not the issue. It was more basic than that.’2Behind this lies the most fundamental problem of all: the fact that outside a handful of companies – Lowell Bryan, a senior partner with McKinsey in New York puts it at between a dozen and 20 worldwide – even the biggest corporations are dominated by the culture of the home country.3‘Outside that handful,’ Mr Bryan says, ‘companies are very German, or very British, or very American. One big difference with American companies is they think globalization means Americanizing the world. Others don’t have that arrogance.’4If top management all come from the home country, that makes it much more difficult to attract and keep a global pool of talent. ‘People know when they fit in and when they don’t,’Mr Bryan says. ‘That’s true even of national companies: there’s a tendency for people to have gone to the same school, or all have trained as engineers. It’s even more true when i t comes to where you grew up.’5The problem lies not in attracting people – a talented Indian or Korean manager will typically want early experience with a multinational –but in keeping them. ‘People will join the company to learn,’ Mr Bryan says, ‘but unl ess they feel they’re part of the company, they’re going to leave, and exploit the brand status of the company in their next job.’6Given the importance of local cultures within the global company, an obvious question is how to appraise and identify talent around the world on a consistent basis. Richard Greenhalgh, head of management development and training at Unilever, says that the company has been working on this for the past four years. ‘We’ve been developing a set of11 management competencies we can use worldwide,’ he says.7‘The aim is to have a clear objective measure of potential. We measure such things as entrepreneurial drive, the ability to lead and develop others, and integrity. That makes up a common core of behaviors. We’ve tested it, and so far it seems to be culturally transferable.’51. Which expression in Paragraph 1 matches the meaning ‘someone whose job is to give adviceto companies’?A. Corporate leader.B.
