To lower the boom.
例句-1: The new chief of police announced today that he was going to lower the boom on drug peddlers by putting a lot more officers in neighborhoods where the situation is worst.
2: I was robbed in broad daylight last year. The police caughtthe guy but set him free after six weeks. I don't understand this, why can'tthey lower the boom on these criminals so that they will think twice before they do something bad.

1:give one a hand; foot the bill...give me a handfoot the billblow outlock, stock and barrelhook, line and sinker每一种语言都有它独特的成语和俗语。
比如,美国人经常说:"Give me a hand."
"Foot the bill."
就拿下面一句话来作例子吧:例句-1:"We arrived two hours late at the big blow-out for Charlie's birthday because our car had a blow-out."
一个是"Lock, stock and barrel",另外一个是:"Hook, line and sinker"。

例句-1:After Bill didn't come home for three days he told his wife hewas away on a secret mission for the government. But that's just a cock andbull story: he was actually off with some woman.

美国的俗语里有这么一个说法:to be cool as a cucumber.
To be cool as a cucumber从字面上来解释就是:像黄瓜一样凉爽。 To be cool as a cucumber就是当一个人碰到困难和麻烦时很冷静、很放松。
例句-1: It's hard to be polite to some people who come into our store. But our manager always manages to keep his cool when dealing with the kind of rude, nasty customers who would make most of us blow our top.

第一个是:High and dry.
High and dry
这就是high and dry。
例句-1: Everybody had fun at Sally's party. But when it ca me time to clean up the mess, all the guests left in a hurry and Sally was left high and dry, to do all the work by herself.
2: John, Jack and Mary all urged me to give a big party to celebrate my promotion. They promised to help out with the preparation. Butso far they've done nothing saying they are too busy. It seems that I've been left high and dry and have to do all the work by myself.

第217讲 ups and downs; down and out
Sound/lesson217.mp3
Ups and downs
1: Mister White sure has had his ups and downs. He's made a fortune
three times and then lost it all. But he doesn't have to worry - his wife is
rich. When her father died last year, she inher ited two million dollars.
2: Carol has had all sorts of ups and downs preparing for her wed ding
- problems with the wedding gown and so on. Then on the big day, the fl owers
and the cake didn't arrive on time. She's very upset - these aren't lucky signs
for a marriage.
Down and out.
3: Jeff used to have a very good job making enough money for
a comfortable life. But he is a big spender and has never saved a penny.
Last year, his company went broke and he lost his job. Now he's down and out.
4: My friend Daniel has no education so it's hard for him to find
a decent jo
b and earn enough money for his family. Right now the poor guy is
really down and out . I hope his children will help him out when they start
working.
