The master of the shop told him several times to go away, but the sweep couldnot leave the savory smell, though unable to purchase the taste of the food. At last the cookcame out of the shop, and taking hold of the sweep, declared that, as he had been feedingupon the smell of his victuals, he should not go away without paying half the price of adinner. The poor fellow said that he neither could nor would pay, and that he would ask the firstperson who should pass, whether it was not an unreasonable and un- just demand. The case was referred to a policeman, who happened to pass at that moment. He said to thesweep: "As you have been feasting one of your senses with the odor of this man'smeat, it is but just you should make him some recompense; therefore you shall, in yourturn, regale one of his senses, which seems to be more insatiable than your appetite. Howmuch money have you ?""I have but two pence in all the world, sir, and I must buy me some bread.""Never mind," answered tile officer, "take your two pence between your hands; now rattle themloudly."The sweep did so, and the officer, turning to the cook, said:"Now, sir, I think he has paid you:the smell of you victuals regaled his nostrils; the sound of his money has tick- led your ears."This decision gave more satisfaction to the bystanders than to the cook, but it was the onlypayment he could obtain.高中短篇英语美文篇二Choosing An OccupationHodeslea, Eastbourne,November 5, 1892Dear Sir,I am very sorry that the pressure of other occupations has prevented me from sending anearlier reply to your letter. In my opinion a man's first duty is to find a way of supporting himself, thereby relievingother people of the necessity of supporting him. Moreover, the learning to do work ofpractical value in the world, in an exact and careful manner, is of itself a very importanteducation, the effects of which make themselves felt in all other pursuits. The habit of doingthat which you do not care about' when you would much rather be doing something else, isinvaluable. It would have saved me a frightful waste of time if I had ever had it drilled into mein youth.Success in any scientific career requires an unusual equipment of capacity, industry, andenergy. If you possess that equipment, you will find leisure enough after your daily commercialwork is over, to make an opening in the scientific ranks for yourself. If you do not, you hadbetter stick to commerce. Nothing is less to be desired than the fate of a young man who, asthe Scotch proverb says, in "trying to make a spoon spoils a horn," and becomes a merehanger- on in literature or in science, when he might have been a useful and a valuablemember of Society in other occupations.I think that your father ought to see this letter.Yours faithfully,T. 下面是店铺带来的高中英语美文摘抄,欢迎阅读!高中英语美文摘抄篇一Enjoy Life Now, AND Save for LaterOften we're told that we have to suffer now — give up what we want —in order to succeed later, that in order to save we must sacrifice. Give up instant gratification to get delayed gratification. But you can do both. For years, I was confused about this, as I read books and websites that sent me two different messages:Pleasure later. The first message was that in order to be successful, in order to build wealth, you have to delay gratification. You can't have instant gratification and be successful.Pleasure now. The second message was usually from other sources on Happiness, but sometimes from the same source: enjoy life now, while you can, because it's short and you never know when your last day will come. Live every day like it's your last. Trouble is, I agree with both messages. And if you read this site often, you’ll see that I send both messages: Live frugally and simply! But also enjoy life! That's because I've reconciled the two philosophies into one: Live life now and enjoy it to the fullest — without destroying your future. The key to doing that? Find ways to enjoy life completely, utterly, maximally … that don’t cost your future very much. Here are some tips for actually living that philosophy:Find free or cheap pleasures. Frugality does not have to beboring or restrictive … if you use your imagination. Be creative and find ways to have fun —loads of it —without spending much money. Have a picnic at the park, go to the beach, do crafts, board games, fly a kite, make art, bake cookies … I could list a hundred things, and you could come up with a few hundred more. Make a list of simple pleasures, and enjoy them to the maximum. This is the key to the whole idea of enjoying life now without spending tomorrow's dollar. See Savor the Little Things .Make simplifying fun. I'm a big fan of simplifying my life, from decluttering to creating a simple lifestyle in every way. And to me, this is great fun. I get rid of stuff (and possibly make money selling it) and have a blast doing it. That’s good math.Rediscover what’s important. Oftentimes we spend tons of money, shopping, going out, watching movies, eating out … without really enjoying life. And when we stop to think about it, we never have time for the things we really want to do. Well, that's probably because your life is filled with things that aren't very important to you. Instead, step back and really think about what’s important to you. Then get rid of the other (expensive) stuff, and focus on what's important. Listen to some stuff on my list: my wife and kids, other friends and family, reading, writing, exercising, volunteering, spending quiet time in contemplation. Guess how many of those things cost a lot of money? Read more here .Make people a priority. This is related to the above point, but I thought I'd give it a little more emphasis. If you give "stuff" a priority — stuff like gadgets, nice furnishings, nice clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. —then you will spend a lot of money. But if you make people a priority — the people you love most, you close friends and family — you don't need to spend a dime to enjoylife. Make s ome time to visit with friends, or your parents … and have a conversation with them that doesn't involve eating out or going to the movies. Just sit, have some iced tea or hot cocoa (depending on the weather), and talk. Tell jokes and laugh your heads off. Talk about books you've read, movies you’ve watched, new things going on in your life, your hopes and dreams. And make time for your kids or your significant other — really spend time with them, doing things that don't cost money. (See Spend Time with Family and Loved Ones , 100 Ways to Have Fun With Your Kids and 50 Ways to Be Romantic on the Cheap .) Find time for yourself. Make time every day, and every week, to spend time alone. It really gives more meaning and enjoyment to your life, rather than rushing through life with no time to think, to breathe. For ideas on how to make this time, see these ways to create time for solitude .Sometimes, splurge. You shouldn't restrict yourself from expensive pleasures all the time — it's not good to develop the feeling of deprivation. To prevent that, once in awhile, buy yourself something … or better yet, give yourself a decadent treat.I love things with dark chocolate or berries. Crepes with ice cream and berries are one of my favorites. Just don't go overboar d … and learn to enjoy the splurge to the fullest. If you truly take the time to enjoy a treat, you don't need a lot of it.Track your successes. It doesn't really matter how you track your success … you can use gold stars for creating a new simplifying or frugalfying habit, or a spreadsheet chart to track your decreasing debt and increasing savings or investments. Tracking is a great way to not only provide motivation, but make the process of changing fun.Reward yourself. And in order to make it more fun, celebrateevery little success! Set rewards for yourself (hopefully not too expensive!) along your path to success — celebrate one day, two days, three days, a week, two weeks, three, a month … you get the idea.Volunteer. One of the most rewarding things for my family has been when we have managed to volunteer. It's actually something we only started doing last year, but since then, we've done it a bunch of times in a number of different ways. And while it doesn't cost a dime, it is tremendously satisfying in ways that money could never buy. Read more .Live in the moment. Learn to think not so much about the past or future, but about what you are going through right now. Be present. It may seem trite, but it's the key to enjoying life to the fullest — without having to spend money. Think about it —you can spend money on eating out, but if you are not really thinking about what you're eating, you may not enjoy it much at all. But if you cook a simple but delicious meal, and really taste every bite, it can be tremendously enjoyable without costing a lot. Read more .Slow down. In the same way, you can't really enjoy life to the fullest if it's rushing past you like it's on fast forward. Ever think about how quickly a week, a month, or a year goes by? Perhaps you're in the fast lane too much. Try slowing down, and things will be less stressful and more enjoyable. Drive slower , eat slower , live slower .Learn to find cheap, cool stuff. Call me crazy, but I love shopping at thrift stores. You can find so many cool things there, and it costs so little. Garage sales are the same way. Or check out Freecycle , or read 20 Ways to Find Free or Cheap Books .高中英语美文摘抄篇二Happiness is a Choice"Happiness, like unHappiness, is a proactive choice." - Stephen CoveyWe want it. We strive for it. We envy others who have it. We can see it just beyond the horizon …as soon as we get richer, thinner, married, divorced, younger, older, find a dream job, or quit a lousy one.Yet, how many people do you know who “have everything” and still yearn for true happiness? The kind of happiness I'm talking about is that kind that comes from within and is not based on status, position, wealth, or possessions. It's a natural resource that is readily available to all. Happiness is a choice. It had previously been thought that the brain is unchanged by life experiences. Recent breakthroughs in psychology, neurology, and chemistry have revealed that Happiness is attainable, and the brain can actually change as a result of conscious selection of thoughts.Experts in the field have given Happiness a nickname -- “subjective well-being.” One person's Hell may be Paradise for another. For example, bungee jumping would be sheer torture for me to endure. For a thrill-seeker friend of mine, this activity represents ultimate joy. Clearly our set points are based on different subjective criteria. Each of us is born with a genetically coded happiness “set point” which is not based entirely on what happens to us. This explains why some people are naturally cheerful most of the time, while others walk around with a permanent scowl on their faces –determined in part by their genetic predisposition. However, according to University of Minnesota professor emeritus of psychology David Lykken, “Happiness is geneticall y influenced, although it is not genetically fixed. The brain's structure can be modified through practice. If you really want to be happier than your grandparents provided for in your genes, you have to learn the kinds of things you can do, day by day, to bounce your set point up and avoid the things that bounce it down.”A study conducted with identical twins raised in different environments suggests that an individual's set point determines about 50% of their disposition to Happiness. In other words, some people are happy , regardless of their less-than-ideal circumstances, while others are unhappy , even when they seem to “have it all.”According to Ed Diener, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois and coeditor of the Journal of Happiness Studies , a number of tools can be used to raise subjective well-being. Here are some examples:Getting enough sleepGetting enough exerciseNurturing close relationships -- connection, physical touch Maintaining an optimistic outlook –choosing positive thoughtsKeeping a gratitude journalForgiving others and letting goUtilizing signature strengths (honesty, kindness, ingenuity, love of learning, etc.) in service of something larger than yourself Acting happy by changing your physiology -- Put on a happy smile!meditation**meditation is a very effective way to change subjective well-being. Richard Davidson, professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin, found in his research that high levels ofactivity at the left frontal area of the cerebral cortex coincided with feelings of Happiness, joy, and alertness. Activity on the right frontal area corresponded to feelings of sadness, anxiety, and worry. Since meditation generates more left-brain activity, studies have concluded that it offers a way to produce more positive emotion.Even in the midst of hardship, one can experience simple pleasures by using some of the tools listed above.高中英语美文摘抄篇三14 Timeless Ways to Live a Happy LifeHow we achieve Happiness can be different for each one of us. Our passions, expectations, life experiences, and even our personalities all contribute to the level of happiness we experience in our lives. Some find Happiness in their careers while others prefer the bliss found in their marriages or other intimate relationship. No matter how you define happiness for yourself, there are certain universal and time-proven strategies to bring, and sustain, more happiness into your life. The following 14 ways to live a happy life can be adapted and even customized to fit your needs. Over time, these strategies will become positive and life-changing habits that will begin to bring more Happiness, joy and peace into your life.1. Notice What’s RightSome of us see the glass as being half-full, while others see the glass as half-empty. The next time you are caught in traffic, begin thinking how nice it is to have a few moments to reflect on the day, focus on a problem you have been trying to solve, or brainstorm on your next big idea. The next time you get in the slow line at the grocery store, take the opportunity to pick up atabloid magazine and do some “guilty pleasure” reading. Take all that life throws out you and reframe it with what’s right about the situation. At the end of the day, you will more content, at peace and happy. Take the time to begin to notice what’s right and see the world change in front of your eyes.2. Be GratefulHow many times do you say the words “thank you,” in a day? How many times do you hear these same words? If you are doing the first thing, saying the “thank yous,” the latter will naturally happen. Learn to be grateful and you will be open to receive an abundance of joy and Happiness.3. Remember the Kid You WereDo you remember how to play? I’m not referring to playi ng a round of golf or a set of tennis. I’m talking about playing like you did when you were a child – a game of tag; leap frog, or street baseball when the bat is a broken broom handle and the bases are the parked cars. One way to find or maintain your Happiness is to remember the kid you were and play!4. Be KindThere is no question that by merely watching acts of kindness creates a significant elevation in our moods and increases the desire for us to perform good deeds as well. Kindness is indeed contagious and when we make a commitment to be kind to ourselves and to others we can experience new heights of joy, Happiness and enthusiasm for our lives.5. Spend Time with Your FriendsAlthough an abundant social and romantic life does not itself guarantee joy, it does have a huge impact on our Happiness. Learn to spend time with your friends and make the friendships a priority in your life.6. Savor Every MomentTo be in the moment is to live in the moment. Too often we are thinking ahead or looking ahead to the next event or circumstance in our lives, not appreciating the “here and now.” When we savor every moment, we are savoring the Happiness in our lives.7. RestThere are times when we need the time to unwind, decompress, or to put it simply, just “to chill.” life comes at all of us hard and fast. Time, as do the days on the calendar, keeps going forward at its own natural pace, which is not always the pace we would choose. Fatigue, stress and exhaustion may begin to settle in on us faster than we may think, or notice. The best remedy for this is indeed rest.8. Move! The expression a “runner’s high” does not infer an addiction, but a feeling or a state of mind - a state of euphoria. There is no question exercise, or any physical exertion, elevates your mood and enhances a more positive attitude as well as fosters better personal self-esteem and confidence. Indeed, one way to increase your Happiness is to move!9. Put on a Happy FaceSometimes we have to fake it until we make it. I’m not suggesting that we n ot be honest, real or authentic, but I’m suggesting, sometimes, we just need to put on a happy face and keep moving forward. Researchers claim that smiling and looking like we are happy will indeed make us happier. Studies further show that if we act like we are happy then we can experience greater joy and Happiness in our lives.10. Pursue Your goalsThe absence of goals in our lives, or more specifically avoiding to pursue our goals, makes us feel like we are stuck and ineffective. The pursuit of goals in our personal lives, in our relationships, or with our careers, is the difference between having a mediocre life or a life full of passion and enthusiasm. pursue your goals and watch your Happiness soar.11. Finding Your CallingSome find meaning in religion or spirituality while others find purpose in their work or relationships. Finding your calling may be much more than accomplishing one simple strategy for increasing your Happiness, but having a sense of purpose – of feeling like you are here for a reason –can perhaps bring the greatest joy of all12. Get into the FlowFlow is the form of joy, excitement and happiness that occurs when we are so absorbed in an activity we love that we can loose ourselves and time seems to stand still. What creates flow is unique to each one of us. To find and sustain true Happiness in our lives, we must get off the sidelines and get into the flow.13. Play to Your StrengthsOne way to achieve flow is by understanding and identifying our strengths and core values, and then begin to use these every day. Once we aware of our strengths and we begin to play to your strengths we can better incorporate them in all aspects of our lives.14. Don’t Overdo ItKnow when to say when. What gives you joy and Happiness the first time may not work the second time. Too much of a good thing may begin not to feel as good if the “thing” becomes more of a routine, or an expectation. Set healthy and reasonableboundaries for yourself and don’t overdo it.。

Withher head bent back she was gazing up at the sky and singing, while one of her little handswas pointing to a tiny cloud that hovered like a golden feather above her head. The sun, whichhad suddenly become very bright, shining on her glossy hair, gave it a metallic luster, and it wasdifficult to say what was the color, dark bronze or black. So completely absorbed was she inwatching the cloud to which her strange song or incantation seemed addr0ssed, that she didnot observe me when I rose and went towards her. Over her head, high up in the blue, alark that was soaring towards' the same gauzy cloud was singing, as if in rivalry. As I slowlyapproached the child, I could see by her forehead, which, in the sunshine seemed like a globe ofpearl, and especially by her complexion, that she was uncommonly lovely. Her eyes, which atone moment seemed blue-gray, at another violet, were shaded by long black lashes, curvingbackward in a most peculiar way, and these matched in hue her eyebrows, and the tress- esthat were tossed about her tender throat and were quivering in the sunlight. All this I did nottake in at once; for at first I could see nothing but those quivering, glittering, changeful eyesturned up into my face. Gradually the other features, especially the sensitive full-lippedmouth,grew upon me as I stood silently gazing. Here seemed to me a more perfect beauty than hadever come to me in my loveliest dreams of beauty. Yet it was not her beauty so much as thelook she gave me that fascinated me, melted me.小女孩在教堂的一扇窗下长满绿草的坟堆上,坐着个小女孩。

高中英语美文摘抄篇1Freda Bright says, "Only in opera do people die of love." It's true. You really can't love somebody to death. I've known people to die from no love, but I've never known anyone to be loved to death. We just can't love one another enough.A heart-warming story tells of a woman who finally decided to ask her boss for a raise in salary. All day she felt nervous and apprehensive. Late in the afternoon she summoned the courage to approach her employer. To her delight, the boss agreed to a raise. The woman arrived home that evening to a beautiful table set with their best dishes. Candles were softly glowing. Her husband had come home early and prepared a festive meal. She wondered if someone from the office had tipped him off, or did he just somehow know that she would not get turned down? She found him in the kitchen and told him the good news. They embraced and kissed, then sat down to the wonderful meal. Next to her plate the woman found a beautifully lettered note. It read, "Congratulations, darling! I knew you'd get the raise! These things will tell you how much I love you."Following the supper, her husband went into the kitchen to clean up. She noticed that a second card had fallen from his pocket. Picking it off the floor, she read, "Don't worry about not getting the raise! You deserve it anyway! These things will tell youhow much I love you."Someone has said that the measure of love is when you love without measure. What this man feels for his spouse is total acceptance and love, whether she succeeds or fails. His love celebrates her victories and soothes her wounds. He stands with her, no matter what life throws in their direction.Upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa said, "What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family." And love your friends. Love them without measure. 高中英语美文摘抄篇2Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling five balls in the air. You name them: work, family, health, friends, and spirit, and you're keeping all of them in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls--family, health, friends, and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged, or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.高中英语美文摘抄篇3Hello, my name is Dimas Ramirez, I'm messaging you regarding my daughter Blanca Ramirez. In the evening, the most familiar sight to me would be stars in the sky. Though they were a mere sprinkle of twinkling dots, yet I had become so accustomed to them that their occasional absence would bring me loneliness and ennui. It had been snowing all night, not a single star in sight. My roommate and I, each wrapped in a quilt, were seated far apart in a different corner of the porch, facing each other and chatting away. She exclaimed pointing to something afar, “Look, Venus in rising!” I looked up and saw nothing but a lamp round the bend in a mountain path. I beamed and said pointing to a tiny lamplight on the opposite mountain, “It’s Jupiter over there!”More and more lights came into sight as we kept pointing here and there. Lights from hurricane lamps flickering about in the pine forest created the scene of a star-studded sky. With the distinction between sky and forest obscured by snowflakes, the numerous lamp-lights now easily passed for as many stars.Completely lost in a make-believe world, I seemed to see all the lamplights drifting from the ground. With the illusory stars hanging still overhead, I was spared the effort of tracing their positions when I woke up from my dreams in the dead of night. Thus I found consolation even on a lonely snowy night !高中短篇英语美文篇2Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young. When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.高中短篇英语美文篇3One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the framer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway and it just wasn't worth to retrieve the donkey. So, he decided to bury it!He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly, then slowly he quieted down till nothing more was heard.A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well, and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing! He would shake it off and take a step up!As the farmer's neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells by not stopping, never giving up, shaking it off, and taking a step up!Remember the five simple rules to be happy:1. Free your heart from hatred.2. Free your mind from worries.3. Trust in God.4. Give more.5. Expect less.高中短篇英语美文篇4Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither(到处) , in a wayward(任性的`,不规则的) course, ove r a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy(狂喜,入迷) –ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable(深不可测的) lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what- at last- I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have tried to apprehend(理解) the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flu. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate(回想,反响) in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.高中短篇英语美文篇5Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. Thereason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, "Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood." I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.""Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested."Yes, it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life."I reflected on(仔细考虑) what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robberspanicked and shot him.Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma(创伤) center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I"d be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place."The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live.""Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness(知觉) ?" I asked.Jerry continued, "The paramedics(护理人员) were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, "He's a dead man." "I knew I needed to take action.""What did you do?" I asked."Well, there was a big, burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry."She asked if I was allergic to anything. "Yes," I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply.I took a deep breath and yelled, "Bullets!"Over their laughter, I told them. "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day wehave the choice to live fully.Attitude, after all, is everything.高中短篇英语美文篇6A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, one child appeared, and a brick smashed into the Jag's side door. He slammed on the brakes and spun the Jag back to the spot from where the brick had been thrown. He jumped out of the car, grabbed some kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?" Building up a head of steam, he went on"That's a new car and that brick you threw is gonna cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?""Please, mister, please,I'm sorry. I didn't know what else to do!"pleaded the youngster."It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up.Sobbing, the boy asked the executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me."Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be okay."Thank you, sir. And God bless you," the grateful child said to him. The man then watched the little boy push his brother to the sidewalk toward their home.It was a long walk backs to his Jaguar... a long, slow walk. Henever did repair the side door. He kept the dent to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention.Life whispers in your soul and speaks to your heart. Sometimes, when you don't have the time to listen... Life throws a brick at your head. It's your choice: Listen to the whispers of your soul or wait for the brick!Do you sometimes ignore loved ones because your life is too fast and busy leaving them to wonder whether you really love them?高中短篇英语美文篇7Hello, my name is Dimas Ramirez, I'm messaging you regarding my daughter Blanca Ramirez. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?"I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she gave me a giant squeeze(挤,紧握) ."Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.""No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age."I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one !" she told me.After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake(奶昔) . We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.Over the course of the school year, Rose became a campus icon and easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed(使用,授予)upon her from the other students. She was living it up.At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet and I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three-by-five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a bit embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I'm sorry I'm so jittery(神经过敏的) .I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order to let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed, she cleared her throat and began:"We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success."You have to laugh and find humor each and every day."You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and they don't even know it!"There is a giant difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change."Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose." She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At year's end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.高中短篇英语美文篇9Bar celona is regarded as Spain‘s second city, behind capital Madrid. 高中英语美文篇二Increasing ConfidenceRobert StubergThe world is channg rapidly and most people are very anious about it.In fact, I think it might even be stronger and more accurate to say that most people are downright fearful of what they see going on around them.Technologal change and innovation are pletely altering many aspects of our lives and it doesnrs;t s there.Econom changes, social changes, scientif changes, polital changesthe list is endless. However, the big question we all face is how are we going to respond to these changes? While the specif answers about what to do take time and thought to uncover, the best way to roach the future and all of the changes it will bring can be summed up in one word: Confidence.Personal confidence is one of the greatest assets we allpossess.Certainly some people seem to have much more of it than others but I believe that confidence is a skill that we can all develop. In some ways, it is undoubtedly the most important skill we can develop. With confidence, all things are within the realm ofpossibility.Without confidence, even the smallest challenges seem insurmountable. What I find fascinating is that people with confidence always seem to end up on .They seem to overe the obstacles that stand in their way.Itrs;s as if problems and challenges run from the person who has confidence.I think whatrs;s so diffult for most people is the belief that confidence has to be based on having a specif solution at hand but thatrs;s just not true. What we all respect and admire is the person who can stand up against overwhelming diffulties and persevere without an answer.Herers;s the secret that most people never get.Lifers;s challenges are no match for the person with unspable confidence. While the problems or challenges might seem too big to be overe, the person with confidence always finds a way to regardless of the circumstances.Ultimately, lifers;s challenges run and hide from the person that maintains confidence. This is hard lesson to learn. The problems of life seem so big and scary and we often think of ourselves as so small and frale. But thatrs;s not the way it is.Thatrs;s the illusion that most people by into, but itrs;s not the truth. The truth is that we are bigger than anything that can ever hen to us in life.We have the power and ability to overe any obstacle in our path. And the most important tool we possess is personal confidence, believing in your ability to overe the current challenge just like we have done so many times in the past.Whatever challenge is currently in your life, know that itrs;s there to help you grow and e the problems you encounter to help you build your personal confidence.Remember, you wouldnrs;t have the problem if you didnrs;t have the power to overe it.Epanding your personal confidence will allow you to take on whatever you need to in order to fulfill your personal mission.高中英语美文篇三A Reporter tes His SourcesItrs;s rather diffult in these noisy, confusing, nerve-racking days to achieve the peace of mind in whh to pause for a moment to reflect on what you believe in.Therers;s so little time and opportunity to ve it much thought-though it is the thing we live by; and without it, without beliefs, human eistence today would hardly be bearable. My own view of life, like everyone elsers;s, is conditioned by personal eperience. In my own case, there were two eperiences, in partular, whh helped to shape my beliefs: years of life and work under a totalitarian reme, and a glimpse of war.Living in a totalitarian land taught me to value highly-andfiercely-the very things the dtators denied: tolerance, respect for others and, above all, the freedom of the human spirit.A glimpse of war filled me with wonder not only at manrs;s courage and capacity for self-sacrife, but at his stubborn, marvelous will to preserve, to endure, to prevail-amidst the most incredible savagery and suffering. When you saw people-civilians-who where bombed out, or who, worse, had been hounded in the concentration cs or worked to a frazzle in the slave-labor gangs-when you saw them e out of these ordeals of horror and torture, still intact as human beings, with a will to go on, with a faith still in themselves, in their fellow man, and in God, you realized that man was indestructible. You reciated, too, that despite the corruption and cruelty of life, man somehow managed to retain great virtues: love, honor, courage, self-sacrife, passion. It filled you with a certain pride just to be a member of the human race.It renewed your belief in your fellow men.Of course, there are many days (in this Age of Aniety) when a human being feels awfully low and discouraged.I myself find consolation at such moments by two means: trying to develop a sense of history, and reneg the quest for inner life.I go back, for ele, to reading Plutarch. He reminds you that even in the golden days of Greece and Rome, from whh so much that is splendid in our own civilization derives, there was a great deal of what we find so loathsome in life today: war, strife, corruption, treason, double-crossing, intolerance, tyranny, rabble-rousing.Reading history thus ves you perspective. It enables you to see your troubles relatively. You donrs;t take them so seriously then. Finally, I find that most true hiness es from oners;s inner life; from the disposition of the mind and soul.Admittedly, a good inner life is diffult to achieve, especially in these trying times. It takes reflection and contemplation. And self-discipline.One must be honest with oneself, and thatrs;s not easy.(You have to have patience and understanding. And, when you can, seek God.)But the reward of having an inner life, whh no outside storm orevil turn of fortune can touch, is, it seems to me, a very great one.。
