Multivitamins Urged for All Pregnant Women
A recent study in Tanzania found that when pregnant women took vitamins every day, fewer babies
were born too small. Babies that weigh less than two and one-half kilograms at birth have a greater
risk of dying. Those that survive are more likely to experience problems with their development.
And experts say that as adults they have a higher risk of diseases including heart disease. The
World Health Organization estimates that every year twenty million babies are born with low birth
weight. Nine out of ten of them are born in developing countries.
The new study took place in Dubai. 4,200 pregnant women received multivitamins. The pills contained
all of the vitamins in the B group along with vitamins C and E. They also contained several times
more iron than the levels advised for women in developed nations. Pregnant women especially in
poor countries may find it difficult to get enough vitamins and minerals from the foods in their
diet.
The scientists compared the findings with results from a group of 4,000 women who did not receive
the vitamins. A report by the scientists, from the United States and Tanzania, appeared in the
New England Journal of Medicine . Wafaie Fawzi of the Harvard University School of Public Health

Black Holes
Most scientists agree that black holes exist but are nearly impossible to locate. A black hole in the universe is not a solidobject, like a planet, but it is shaped like a sphere (球体). Astronomers(天⽂学家) think that at the center of a black hole thereis a single point in space with infinite (⽆限的) density (稠密). This single point is called a singularity (奇点). If the singularitytheory is correct, it means that when a massive star collapses, all the material in it disappears into the singularity. The centerof a black hole would not really be a hole at all, but an infinitely dense point.
Anything that crosses the black hole is pulled in by its great gravity.
Although black holes do exist, they are difficult to observe. These are the reasons.
No light or anything else comes out of black holes. As a result, they are invisible to a telescope.

Better Control of TB Seen if a Faster Cure Is Found
The World Health Organizationl estimates that about one-third of all people are infected with bacteria that causetuberculosis. Most times, the infection remains inactive. But each year about eight million people develop active cases of TB,usually in their lungs. Two million people die of it.
The disease has increased with the spread of AIDS and drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis.
Current treatments take at least six months. Patients have to take a combination of several antibiotic drugs daily. Butmany people stop as soon as they feel better. Doing that can lead to an infection that resists treatment. Public health expertsagree that a faster-acting cure for tuberculosis would be more effective. Now a study estimates just how effective it might be.A professor of international health at Harvard University led the study. Joshua Salomon says a shorter treatment programwould likely mean not just more patients cured. It would also mean fewer infectious
