Both machines and humans will haveaccess to a global net with instant access to the world’s knowledge. But Pearson also fears that it could divide the world into two classes-those with access to this knowledge and those without. Clearly, there is a risk in losing control of things which are capable of chinking. Pearson expects machines to be as smart as humans by 2050. After that, computers will continue to get even smarter. The trouble with the digital revolution, says MIT Media Lab director Neil Gershenfeld in his book When Things Start to Think, is that computers may have speeded up many of the processes of modern life, but they still remain relatively difficult to use.“Most computers are nearly blind, deaf and dumb,” says Gershenfeld. The speed of the computer is increasingly much less of a concern than the difficulty:1. in telling it what you want it to do, or2. in understanding what it has done, or3. in using it where you want to go, rather than where it can go.What’s needed now, he concludes, is digital evolution. The real challenge is how to create systems with many parts that can work together and change, combining the physical world with the digital world. If we can manage the development so that they (thinking machines) stay our friends, in just a few years we’ll see progress in every area of life that makes the past centuries look like all of us have been asleep.“Evolution is a result of interaction,” says Gershenfeld.“And information technology is greatly changing how we interact. Therefore it’s not crazy to think about the influence of this on evolution.”56. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Computers will become smarter and smarter.B. The image of things will be different in the future.C. The speed of computers is much less of a concern.D. Computers will divide the world into two classes.57. According to Pearson,__________are the two classes into which the world will be divided.A. those who study computers in their spare time and those who don’tB. those who have computers to sell and those who haven’tC. those who can use computers to learn knowledge and those who can’tD. those who are smarter than computers and those who aren’t58. According to Neil Gershenfeld, __________is needed now.A. greater speed of computer development and the process of lifeB. a digital evolution that combines the physical world and the digital one59. What does the sentence “in just a few years we’ll see progress in every area of life that makes the past centu ries look like we’ve all been asleep” suggest?A. We have been sleeping for thousands of years according to computers.B. The digital evolution has progressed very slowly during the last few years.C. Comparatively speaking . progress of the past centuries was really very slow.D. We can work for a few years to make progress in the digital evolution possible.60. What leads to evolution according to the passage?A. InformationB. RevolutionC. ComputersD. InteractionQuestions 61-65 are based on the following passage:“University-the best time of your life.” All my parent’s friends, and my many uncles and aunts, said the same thing to me, despite the fact that none of them had ever been to one. However, I thought there had to be something in what they were saying , and as the day approached when I would start my higher education, I felt a growing excitement. And then university actually began and for the first term I was terribly miserable, I’d chosen a university that was a long way from home, and in those first few months, how I regretted not having taken my parents’ advice and gone to the very good university a short bus ride away. I felt as if I was on another planet, and, although I could cope with the work, had great difficulty finding anyone I felt comfortable talking to.But the next term things changed. I started chatting to two girls who had rooms on the same floor as me and we became friends. They introduced me to a few more people I got on with, and suddenly there was a group of us who did everything together. We were all quite serious, and intended to be successful, and this, as well as the fact that I found the university work very interesting, meant that I began to develop intellectually. But this isn’t to say we didn’t have fun⼀we did, there were parties most weekends and by my second year, I knew a lot of interesting people. When I left, having got a very g ood degree, I had to confess that I’d had a wonderful time at university, and it was hard to believe life could get any better.61. “University-the best time of your life.” is a saying that the writer__________.A. agrees withB. thinks is often trueC. thinks is sometimes trueD. says is not true for her62. 2013级本科《大学英语》复习资料答案

2013级本科《大学英语》复习资料答案Part One: Reading ComprehensionDirections:There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write down the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Hyperinflation (极度通货膨胀) is defined as an economic condition during which there is a steep increase in prices. In accordance with the laws of economics, three factors combine to create this condition. First, demand must be much greater than the supply of available goods. Second, the country must continuously create and thereby build up an ever increasing supply of money. Third, the governmental processes that are used to collect taxes must be crippled. Let’s imagine a country where production is barely accomplishing its goal to keep up with demand. When this happens, the government should decrease the salaries of the workers by raising taxes. But the government is powerless to collect the taxes, so it prints more money to compensate for (补偿) the goods it must purchase. This new money goes to the workers who produced the goods: as a result, the people are forced to give up certain things for a while—they actually become richer. While this might appear to be a positive step, it is actually regressive. Every month the government is forced to print more and more money, thereby increasing its liabilities(债务) until it is destroyed. The only way to prevent total economic collapse in such a situation is for the government to increase taxes in a manner that is characterized by impartiality(公正) to everyone involved.1.Which of the following might occur during hyperinflation?A. A slight increase in prices.B.Rapid growth of economic.C.Decrease of worker’s salary.D.Soaring prices.2.The author states that during hyperinflation_______________.A. goods appear to be overabundantB. the country has to supply more moneyC. government may become richer by collecting more taxesD. people are forced to give up certain things3. The passage implies that _____________.A. hyperinflation is just a passing phase in the economic developmentB. people could benefit a lot from hyperinflationC. hyperinflation is used by a government to raise taxesD. hyperinflation may cause the downfall of a government4. The word “regressive” probably means___________.A. harmfulB. negativeC. going backD. progressive5. The tone of the author can be said to be___________.A. seriousB. mildC. subjectiveD. objectivePassage 2Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose ofeducating them. Our purpose is for life.In some modern countries, it has been fashionable to think that by free education for all--- whether rich or poor, clever or stupid one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees, they refuse to do what they think “low” work. In fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we would die if we have no food. If no one cleaned out streets and moved the rubbish away our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns. In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.6. The author of this passage thinks that ______.A. education can settle all of the world’s problem s.B. free education won’t help to solve social problems.C. free education for all probably leads to a perfect worldD. all the social problems can’t be solved by education7. The author wants to prove that ______.A. our society needs all kinds of jobsB. our society needs free education for allC. a farmer is more important than a professorD. people with university degrees refuse to do what they think “low” work8. One can learn from the passage _______.A. work with hands is dirty and shameful workB. work with hands is low workC. work with hands is the most importantD. we can’t regard work with hands as low work9. The purpose of education is ______.A. to choose the system of educationB. to prepare children mainly for their future workC. to build a perfect worldD. to let everyone receive education fit for him10. The passage mainly tells us about ______ of education.A. the meansB. the systemC. the valueD. the typePassage 3Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money? As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life. Financial experts say that every one also has their own belief of how to manage their finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money. According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket and the snail. The ant---works firstJust like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don’t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk. The cricket---fun firstThe cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn’t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little saving. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance. The snail---lives under pressureThe snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.11. According to the passage, by looking into the differences of people, you will_____.A. know different ways of saving moneyB. find people’s different ways of managing their financesC. easily set up your value systemsD. easily change your value system12. Value system_____.A. is a set of our own values or beliefsB. is the way we look after our moneyC. will not change later in timeD. is belief of how to manage our finances13. People who live like ants_____.A. will store food in summer for winterB. don’t enjoy their workingC. may enjoy lift when they get old and retireD. love saving money instead of making investment14. Which of the following is true?A. the crickets always think they have no futureB. the crickets borrow money because they would like to enjoy everything nowC. the snails will take more loans if they realize that they can afford it.D. the snails enjoy life because they have luxurious houses.15. Translate the following paragraph into Chinese: (10 points)得分评卷人Rummaging through the fruit and veg section of my local supermarket, reading the country of origin labels, I am bewildered by the geography of it all. That the fruits of the earth should all be laid out on tidy shelves in this provincial corner of Britain would have been unthinkable a few years ago, yet now it is taken for granted.Once strange and exotic fruits that only the rich could afford, if not now part of everyone’s diet, are certainly part of our everyday shopping experience. So much so that instead of focusing on the novel, I am drawn to the commonplace. Here, among the “humble” vegetables, something strange and disturbing is going on.V. Reading Comprehension (38 points)得分评卷人Passage 1Clearly if we are to participle in the society in which we live we must communicate with other people. A great deal of communicating is performed on a person-to-person basis by the simple means of speech. If we travel in buses, buy things in shops, or eat in restaurants, we are likely to have conversations where we give information or opinions, receive news or comment, and very likely have our views challenged by other members of society.Face-to-face contact is by no means the only form of communication and during the last two hundred years the art of mass communication has become of one of the dominating factors of contemporary society. Two things, above others, have caused the enormous growth of the communication industry. Firstly, inventiveness has led to advances in printing, telecommunications, photography, radio and television. Secondly, speed has revolutionized the transmission and reception of communications so that local news often takes a back seat to national news, which itself is often almost eclipsed by international news.No longer is the possession of information confined to a privileged minority. In the last century the wealthy man with his own library was indeed fortunate, but today there are public libraries. Forty years ago people used to flock to the cinema, but now far more people sit at home and turn on the TV to watch a programme that is being channeled into millions of homes.Communication is no longer merely concerned with the transmission of information. The modern communication industry influences the way people live in society and broadens their horizons by allowing access to information, education and entertainment. The printing, broadcasting and advertising industries are all involved with informing, educating and entertaining.Although a great deal of the material communicated by the mass media is very valuable to the individual and to the society of which he is a part, the vast modern network of communications is open to abuse. However, the mass media are with us for better, for worse, and there is no turning back.1.In the first paragraph the writer emphasizes the _________ of face-to-face contact insocial settings.A natureB limitationC usefulnessD creativity2. It is implied in the passage that_______A local news used to be the only source of informationB local news still takes a significant placeC national news is becoming more popularD international news is the fastest transmitted news3. which of the following statement is INCORRECT?A To possess information used to be a privilegeB Public libraries have replaced private librariesC Communication means more than transmissionD Information influences ways of life and thinking4.From the last paragraph we can infer that the writer is________.A indifferent to the harmful influence of the mass mediaB happy about the drastic changes in the mass mediaC pessimistic about the future of the mass mediaD concerned about the wrong use of the mass mediaPassage 2I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. I have managed to convince myself that it weren’t for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village buried in the country. But how realistic is the dream?Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in massive tower blocks, noisy, dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of flats. Children become aggressive and nervous—cooped up at home all day, with nowhere to play; their mothers feel isolated from the rest of the world. Strangely enough whereas in the past the inhabitants of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don’t even say hello to each other.Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the inhabitants of small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among friends in a village, it is also true that you are cut off from the existing and important events that take place in cities. There’s little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, andfor anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on and expedition to the nearest large town. The city-dweller who leaves for the country is often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet. What, then, is the answer? The country has the advantage of peace and quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut off; the city breeds a feeling of isolation, and constant noise batters the senses. But one of its main advantages is that you are at the center of things, and that life doesn’t come to an end at half-past nine at night. Some people have found (or rather bought) a compromise between the two; they have expressed their preference for the “quiet life” by leaving the suburbs and moving to villages within commuting distance of large cities. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind—they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original inhabitants of the villages. What then of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and murmuring “morning” to the locals as they pass by? I’m keen on the idea, but you see there’s my cat, Toby, I’m not at all sure that he would take to all that fresh air and exercise in the long grass, I mean, can you see him mixing with all those hearty males down the farm? No, he would rather have the electric imitation-coal fire any evening.5.We get the impression from the first paragraph that the authorA used to live in the countryB used to work in the cityC works in the cityD lives in the country6. In the author’s opinion, the following may cause city people to be unhappy EXCEPTA a strong sense of fearB lack of communicationC housing conditionsD a sense of isolation7. Education today is not just a high school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.Scientists, mechanics and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.Continuing education classes give more adults the chances to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of the classes available. Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.10. Difference Choices for AdultsPassage 4Human cloning technology could be used to reverse heart attacks. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden. With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages, are not very successfully. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before. We should be able to clone the bone marrow for children and adults suffering from leukemia. This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology. We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus be able to cure cancer.Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene-related diseases. The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for mankind. This new technology promises unprecedented advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin.15.Heart attacks can be treated with human cloning technology by___________.A removing the damaged part of the heartB replacing the old heart with a cloned oneC repairing the heart with cells cloned from healthy onesD giving the patients injections of various medicines16. He may also say, “Oh, no. I want too take you to lunch at Smith’s, or “I want you to try the Chinese dumplings there.” This means the person ants to pay for both of you. The State Economic and Trade Commission(SETC)survey shows that the annual sales volume of China’s 20 biggest chains leapt last year by 43 percent and the number of their retail stores rose by 46.7 percent, while sales for the whole retail market grew by 10.1 percent. Shanghai Lian Hua Supermarket Company holds the top position with 14.06 billion yuan(US $ 1.7 billion)in sales and 1,225 retail stores. The statistics indicate that the biggest stores are swallowing more market share, leaving little development space for medium and small stores, said analysts(分析家). Analysts also note that almost all the giant chains have their headquarters in East China, but they are likely to explore western regions in the near future. With China’s entrance into the World Trade Organization, its market is attracting overseas retailers too. The country is committed to opening gradually its retail business, and as a result, more chain stores from outside China will have a share of the pie. So he turns on his radio. Then he eats breakfast. As he eats, he reads his e-mail and reviews his to-do list. Then he sits on the sofa and thinks about an article he needs to write... Wait a minute! Radio? Breakfast? Sofa? What kind of workplace is this? Well, actually it is John’s house, and he is atelecommuter—he works at home, communicating with the workplace through the Internet. Like John, millions of people—and their employer—are finding that telecommuting is a great way to work. Telecommuters can follow their own schedules. They work in the comfort of their homes, where they can also look after young children or elderly parents. They save time and money by not traveling to work. Their employers save, too, because they need less office space and furniture. Studies show that telecommuters change jobs less often. This saves employers even more money. Telecommuting helps society, too, by reducing pollution and traffic problems. Jobs that are suited to telecommuting include writing, design work, computer programming and accounting(会计). If a job involves working with information, a telecommuter can probably do it.46.From the passage we know that John does his job______.A.by telephoneB.in his officeC.away from homeD.through the Internet正确答案:D47.Which of the following is mentioned as one of the advantages of telecommuting?A.One can get along well with co-workers.B.One can work on one’s own schedule.C.One can work for several employers.D.One can enjoy a lot of traveling.正确答案:B48.The passage tells us that telecommuters change jobs less often and so______.A.they can get more work experienceB.they will have a longer paid holidayC.their employers can save more moneyD.their employers will give them a higher pay正确答案:C49.The phrase “suited to”(Line 1, Para. 3)means______.A.acceptable forB.difficult forC.fit forD.bad for正确答案:C50.The passage is mainly about______.A.a new way to workB.John’s working dayC.various workplacesD.the Internet正确答案:APeople today are still talking about the generation gap(代沟). Some parents complain that their children do not show them proper respect, while children complain that their parents do not understand them at all. What has gone wrong? Why has the generation gap appeared? One important cause is that young people want to choose their own life style. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to many people that their parents like, and often to continue the family occupation. Parents often expect their children to do better than they do, to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the high wishes that parents place on their children are another cause of the generation gap. Finally, the high speed of social changes deepens the gap. In a traditional culture, people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society today the knowledge of lifetime may be out of use overnight.51.According to the passage, children today expect their parents to______.A.give them more independenceB.choose a good job for themC.live together with themD.make more money正确答案:A52.Parents often hope that their children will______.A.make as much money as they doB.be more successful than they areC.choose jobs according to their own willD.avoid doing what their parents can’t do正确答案:B53.The generation gap has become wider than before because of______.A.the increasing dependence of children on parentsB.the influence of traditional culture on childrenC.the rapid changes of modern societyD.the missing of lifelong occupation正确答案:C54.In today’s society, the knowledge of a lifetime______.A.is still very much valuedB.becomes out of date quicklyC.is essential for continuing family occupationD.helps the young generation to find a better job正确答案:B55.A proper title for this passage would be______.A.Parents’ Viewpoints On Generation GapB.Relationship Between Family MembersC.Generation Gap Between the Young and the OldD.Difference Between Traditional Culture and Modern Knowledge正确答案:CThere are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals. Short-range goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possible months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, our long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-range goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long-range goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.56.Our long-term goals mean a lot______.A.if we complete our short-range goalsB.if we cannot reach solid short-term goalsC.if we write down the datesD.if we put forward some plans正确答案:A57.New short-term goals are built upon______.A.two yearsB.long-term goalsC.current activitiesD.the goals that have been completed正确答案:D58.When we complete each step of our goals,______.A.we will win final successB.we are overwhelmedC.we should build up confidence of successD.we should strong desire for setting new goals正确答案:C59.Once our goals are drawn up,______.A.we should stick to them until we complete themB.we may change our goals as we have new ideas and opportunitiesC.we had better wait for the exciting news of successD.we have made great decision正确答案:B60.It is implied but not stated in the passage that______.A.those who have long-term goals will succeedB.writing down the dates may discourage youC.the goal is only a guide for us to reach our destinationD.every should have a goal正确答案:CClozeThere is a Web site called the “World Database of Happiness”. Looking at the tree rings is more important. Someweather reports go back only one century, but some trees can showus an exact record of the weather even furtherback. It's clear that a tree would grow best in aclimate with lots of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that littlesunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from afavorable (有利的) to an unfavorableclimate can be reading the tree rings in tree trunk. To find out the weather often years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to theinside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then we aresure that lots of sunny and rainy weather happened. If the rings are closetogether, then the climate was bad for the tree.Studying tree rings is important not onlyfor the history of the weather, but also for the historyof man. In a place of New Mexico you can find only sand-no trees andno people. However, many centuries ago a lot of people lived there. They leftsuddenly. Why?A scientist studied the dead tree ringswhich had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they hadcut down all the trees. Trees were used to make fires and buildings. So, afterthe people cut down the trees, they had to move.(1)、It is understood that in a favorable climate tree ringsgrow far from each other.A:TB:F答案:A(2)、Trees brought lots of sunlight and rainfall.A:TB:F答案:B(3)、The scientists are interested in studying tree ringsbecause they can tell whether the climate was favorable or not.A:TB:F答案:A(4)、Studying dead tree rings shows how the people left.A:TB:F答案:B(5)、The people had to leave the place of New Mexico becausethey had cut down all the trees.A:TB:F答案:A2、Britainand France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can becrossed in as few as 20 minutes. But the cultures of the two countriessometimes seem to be miles apart.Last Thursday Britain and France celebratedthe 100th anniversary (周年纪念)of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. Theagreement marked a new beginning for thecountries following centuries of warsand love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downsover the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French PresidentJacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blairand Chirac's body language at international meetings. While the French leaderoften greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug, Blair justreceives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could infact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be becauseof the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But thisdoesn't stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only3million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys show that most Frenchpeople feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the researchcarried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted.Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France 's close relationship with Germany , or because the French are not happywith Britain 's close linkswith the US .Whatever the answer is, as both sidescelebrate 100 years of "doubtful friendship", they are at least ableto make jokes about each other. Passage 2
Basketball is a sport enjoyed by millions of fans in at least 100 countries. It’s one of the best-known sports in the world. It began in 1891. Dr. James A. Naismith, the father of basketball, was an instructor at a YMCA training school. The school trained people to work in YMCAs. Officials at the school were worried about the low attend them because the school did not have a good winter sports program. So they asked Dr. Naismith for help. He came up with a new indoor game. Naismith studied current games. He found that all the most popular games used a ball. So a ball would be part of his new game, he decided. But kicking the ball or hitting it would be too rough for indoors. So he put two baskets up on poles. The players had to try to throw a soccer ball into them. Naismith then made thirteen rules for the game. Twelve of them are still in use today. Just seven years after the game began, professional basketball teams were formed. Passage 3
No longer do American families live by the rule that “Father’s word is law”. Today’s family tries to be democratic, to give family members some voice in decision-making. Of course, this approach is not always possible, but when parents must make the decision, it is usually a joint one. This democratic approach to family life does not prevent all family quarrels. Americans have familiar phrases to describe various types of family arguments. First there is the battle of the sexes, when husband and wife fight for control of the family. Then there is sibling rivalry, competition and jealousy between brothers and sisters. Americans also speak of the generation gap, which makes it difficult for parents to understand the attitudes and behavior of their children and vice versa. Married people often have in-law problems, especially

Passage 1
From Trash to Treasure Early on Saturday morning, much of the world remains in bed. But a few Americans are up and preparing for the hunt. Armed with the newspaper yard-sale listing, they plan to be the first to arrive at the sales. Yard-sale shoppers aren’t the only people who like used goods. From Australia to the U.S.A., Westerners love to buy other people’s stuff. Even the rich people willingly search through used goods looking for a unique treasure. Some people buy used goods simply to save money. Others hunt through them hoping to find a valuable antique. Still others look for items to add to their collections. True antiques must be at least 100 years old. But any item that is no longer made can be collected --- and some hold great value. Some who collect want to make money. They carefully look over items for any flaws that would lower the item’s value. They take classes and read books to learn which items will increase in value or are liked by collectors. 1. According to the passage, the title “From Trash to Treasure” most likely means “________”. A. from garbage to money B. from unwanted things to valuable objects C. from old things to valuable antiques D. from extra things to useful objects 2. What does the phrase “hold great value” (para.3) mean? A. Set a high standard. B. Be worth much money. C. Have a high cost. D. Be of great use. 3. What do collectors do before they buy an antique item? A. They check to see if it has any flaws that may reduce its value. B. They take classes to see whether it will increase in value. C. They read books to get knowledge about antique collections. D. They make sure that they find new ways to use it. 4. A. to know which items sell well and attract collectors B. to know which items will become more valuable and be wanted by collectors C. to know which items sell well and bring them money D. to know which items will increase in cost and attract yard-sale shoppers
