I don't ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There
was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what
it's like to work in a field dominated by men. I was never very good at
telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting.
What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of
space-time and the nature of black holes.
At 19, when I began studying astrophysics(天体物理学), it did not
bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while
earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as 3 post-doctor doing space research,
the issue started to bother me. My every achievement—jobs, research
papers, awards— was viewed through the lens of gender (性别) politics.
So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on
left brain versus (相对于) right brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind.
Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that
would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations: I don't
talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence
I had at 19 and to realize that I didn't want to deal with gender issues.
Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female
scientist? After all, I don't study sociology or political theory. Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women's college in New York
City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class
were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer:
45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific
research and a desire for children. And I don't dismiss those concerns.
Still, I don't tell them "war" stories. Instead, I have given them this:
the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics
experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven
by a love of science. And that's a sight worth talking about.
9. From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would attribute(归因于)
the author's failures to_____.
A. the very fact that she is a woman
B. her involvement in gender politics
C. her over-confidence as a female astrophysicist
D. the burden she bears in a male-dominated society
10. What did the author constantly fight against while doing her Ph.D.
and post-doctoral research?
A. Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.
B. Unfair accusations from both inside and outside her circle.
C. People's stereotyped attitude towards female scientists.
D. Widespread misconceptions about nature and nurture
11. Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?
A. Female students no longer have to worry about gender issues.
B. Her students' performance has brought back her confidence.
C. Her female students can do just as well as male students.
D. More female students are pursuing science than before.
12. What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?
A. Women students needn't have the concerns of her generation.
B. Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.
C. Women can balance a career in science and having a family.
D. Women now have fewer discrimination problems about science
career.

Researchers in the psychology department at the University of
California at Los Angeles (UCLA) have discovered a major difference in
the way men and women respond to stress. This difference may explain why
men are more likely to suffer from stressrelated disorders.
Until now, psychological research has maintained that both men
and women have the same “fightorflight” reaction to stress. In other words, individuals either react with aggressive behavior, such as verbal
or physical conflict (“fight”), or they react by withdrawing from the
stressful situation (“flight”). However, the UCLA research team found
that men and women have quite different biological and behavioral
responses to stress. While men often react to stress in the
fightorflight response, women often have another kind of reaction
which could be called “tend and befriend.” That is, they often react
to stressful conditions by protecting and nurturing their young
(“tend”), and by looking for social contact and support from
others—especially other females (“befriend”).
Scientists have long known that in the fightorflight
reaction to stress, an important role is played by certain hormones (激素) released by the body. The UCLA research team suggests that the female

A breathtaking trick potentially left over from our ancestors might be
found in us — the ability to sense oxygen through our skin.
Amphibians(两栖动物), animals such as frogs that can live both on land
and in water, have long been known to be capable of breathing through
their skin. In fact, the first known lungless frog that breathes only
through its skin was discovered recently in the rivers of Borneo.
Now the same oxygen sensors found in frog skins and in the lungs of mammals
have unexpectedly been discovered in the skin of mice.
“No one had ever looked,” explained Randall Johnson, a biologist
researcher.
Mice and frogs are quite distant relatives, so the fact they have these
molecules (分子) in common in their skin suggests they might well be found
in the skin of other mammals, such as humans.

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published
Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).
The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46,
000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected,
from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los
Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in
parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick Mclntyre, an ecologist who was the lead
author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the

Educators are seriously concerned about the high rate of dropouts among the doctor of philosophy candidates and
the consequent loss of talent to a nation in need of Ph. D. s. Some have placed the dropouts loss as high as 50
percent. The extent of the loss was, however, largely a matter of expert guessing. Last week a well-rounded study was
published. It was published. It was based on 22,000 questionnaires sent to former graduate students who were
enrolled in 24 universities and it seemed to show many past fears to be groundless.
The dropouts rate was found to be 31 per cent, and in most cases the dropouts, while not completing the Ph. D.
requirement, went on to productive work. They are not only doing well financially, but, according to the report, are

Chinese politeness have always been formal to follow strict rules, although
sometimes Chinese people seem to be impolite according to Western standards in public

The idea of shame, usually expressed as 'face' could be loosely defined as the
'status' or 'self-respect' in Chinese and by no means alien to foreigners. It is the
worst thing for a Chinese to lose face. Never insult, embarrass, shame, yell at or
otherwise demean a person. Since all these actions would risk putting a Chinese in
a situation that he might lose face, neither try to prove someone wrong nor shout
at him in public. In order to get a successful effect without letting a Chinese lose
face, any criticism should be delivered privately, carefully, or else, just opposite

Hollywood’s theory that machines with evil(邪恶的)minds will drive armies of
killer robots is just silly. The real problem relates to the possibility that artificial
intelligence(AI)may become extremely good at achieving something other than
what we really want. In 1960 a well-known mathematician Norbert Wiener, who
founded the field of cybernetics(控制论), put it this way:“If we use, to achieve our
purposes, a mechanical agency with whose operation we cannot effectively
interfere(干预), we had better be quite sure that the purpose put into the machine
is the purpose which we really desire.”
A machine with a specific purpose has another quality, one that we usually
associate with living things:a wish to preserve its own existence. For the machine,
this quality is not in-born, nor is it something introduced by humans;it is a logical

Bacteria are an annoying problem for astronauts. The microorganisms(微生物)
from our bodies grow uncontrollably on surfaces of the International Space Station, so
astronauts spend hours cleaning them up each week. How is NASA overcoming this
very tiny big problem? It's turning to a bunch of high school kids. But not just any
kids. It is depending on NASA HUNCH high school classrooms, like the one science
teachers Gene Gordon and Donna Himmelberg lead at Fairport High School in
Fairport, New York.
HUNCH is designed to connect high school classrooms with NASA engineers.
For the past two years, Gordon's students have been studying ways to kill bacteria in
zero gravity, and they think they're close to a solution(解决方案). “We don't give the
students any breaks. They have to do it just like NASA engineers,” says Florence

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far
better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s
waste in the . In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The , for example, is running out of areas for burying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

about 20 times as much sugar and at least five times as much fat
as they did in 1800. This may have something to do with the
increase in heart disease in Western countries .
