高中英语外研版必修4Module 1 模块综合测评含解析
模块综合测评(时间:100分钟,满分:120分)Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AMan in the FutureWhat will man be like in the future—in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make a guess,of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an obvious example.Man,even five hundred years ago,was shorter than he is today. Now,on average, men are about three inches taller.Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time,so we may believe that man will continue to grow taller.Again,in the modern world we use our brains a great deal.Even so,we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity(容量;能力).As time goes on,however,we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones. This is likely to bring about a physical change too.The head,in particular the forehead, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant(持续的)use. In fact,we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand,we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These,as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive(敏感的)because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? It will probably disappear from the body altogether in the course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald(秃头的;秃顶的).Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at.This may well be true. All the same,in spite of all these changes;future man will still have a lot in common with us.He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.【语篇解读】本文从身高、眼睛、大脑等几个方面对人类未来的外表做出一些预测。

Module 1 Life in the Future第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
ADear Managing Director,As you know, money was recently received for improvements to the café, and the Board (董事会) has made some suggestions about how to spend it. The purpose of this letter is to show the reaction of the staff (全体员工) to your ideas and to present some suggestions of our own.As we understand it, the Board has three main suggestions:• to repaint the walls and hang curtains (窗帘)• to buy longer tables and more chairs• to brighten up the café with plantsWe are very happy with the idea of repainting and curtains. This would certainly make the café more attractive. However, we do not feel that there is any need for new tables and chairs. The present furniture is in good condition and because the tables are small, they encourage a friendlier feeling than long tables would. As for plants, we feel the money could be better spent on other things. Our suggestions are:• to buy a new dishw ashing machine. The present machine is of poor quality and doesn't always clean the dishes well.• to buy a new coffee machine. The present machine breaks down very often and takes a long time to get repaired. Also, would it be possible to change our servicing company?• to buy more salt and pepper sets so we have one for every table.• to buy new staff uniforms (制服). The present uniforms are uncomfortable and unattractive. We hope that our suggestions will be given serious consideration, particularly those related to the two machines. We look forward to discussing them with you at a convenient (方便的) time.Constanza Brookes, Staff Representative21. She has worked on many nature documentaries, including the 2006 BBC program Planet Earth. For this series, she travelled around the world to film the world's greatest mountains. The job of series producer is very complex. For Frozen Planet, a seven-part series that explores what life is like on the North and South Poles, Berlowitz had to decide when and where to film. She also had to decide how to tell the story. Every day, she helped set up the cameras, which can take hours. With the crew (工作人员), she often spent hours quietly looking or waiting for animals. She talked about the day the crew finally found a polar bear and her cubs (幼崽).“A mother polar bear was having a hard tim e finding food for her cubs. But the little cubs were playing, which made her hunt difficult. I was crying with laughter when she put one of the little cubs in a hole so she could hunt. I thought, this is what mothers do!”Berlowitz is one of very few series women producers. She hopes more women will become producers in the future. She said: “As producers, you do not have to be very physically strong, but you have to be happy to go to extreme areas.”Berlowitz enjoys seeing new parts of the world and filming things many people have never seen before. But the best part of her work is hearing from the people who watch her documentaries.“I got a wonderful email from an eleven-year-old girl from Iran. She was so excited that women do jobs like mine. She wants to try and follow my example. She wrote me a beautiful poem, which was about the polar bear film. It made me cry with joy,” she said.24. What can we learn about Berlowitz's work?A. It takes time and patience.B. It always puts her in danger.C. It needs to be done independently.D. It has nothing to do with her major.25. What feeling did Berlowitz express from her observation of bears?A. Pity.B. Worry.C. Fun.D. Pride.26. What did Berlowitz say to possible producers?A. Grow a strong body.B. To show her audience's positive response means a lot to her.CBryan Laubscher, one of the world's leading astrophysicists, who study the physics and chemistry of the stars, planets, etc, is developing an invention called the Mars Elevator. To form a picture of this, you may want to imagine the story of Jack and the Beanstalk (《杰克与魔豆》). This is the story of a boy who grew a beanstalk that reached the heavens. Jack climbed the stalk and entered another world. The space elevator is similar but of course much more high-tech and better yet, it is real!Astrophysicists are designing a steel-like cable (缆绳) that will be connected to a platform (平台) in the ocean. This cable is designed to be pulled up into space, where it will then be connected to a space station. People will be able to travel up and down this elevator by the year 2020. There will be a number of space elevators so that both tourists and businesses can travel into space. To get there, space tourists will simply travel to the nearest ocean elevator entrance. The trip up into space will take about a week. When they arrive, space tourists will be inside a space station and will be able to stay there. There are other alternatives, too. Astronomers think it will be easy to travel from the space station to themoon, where space tourists can stay in a moon hotel —which is now being designed. The future looks bright for space tourists. It also looks bright for industry and scientists. Mining companies will travel to space to mine elements (元素) that are rare on Earth. Energy scientists will travel to space to set up space solar panels, which will collect a huge amount of energy from the sun and shoot it back to Earth where we can use it to heat our homes and meet our energy needs.28. What does Jack and the Beanstalk help readers understand?A. The difficulty of building space elevators.B. What material space elevators would use.C. What space elevators would look like.D. The reason for inventing space elevators.29. What can we infer about space elevators?A. They're accepting pre-paid bookings.B. They'll be available in the near future.C. They're mainly used for scientific study.D. They'll offer people a seven-day round trip.30. What does the underlined word “alternatives” (in Para. 2) mean?A. Advantages.B. Purposes.C. Entries.D. Choices.31. What is the author's attitude towards space elevators?A. Worried.B. Doubtful.C. Critical.D. Positive.DMy beautiful new watch had run eighteen months without losing or gaining (走得快). But at last, one night, I forgot to wind it up (上发条) and it stopped running. The next day I stepped into the jeweler's to set it by the exact time, and the head of the shop started to set it for me. Then he said, “She is four minutes slow — regulator (调节器) wants pushing up.” I tried to stop him — tried to make him understand that the watch kept perfect time. But no; he calmly and cruelly did the shameful deed.My watch began to gain. It gained faster and faster day by day. Finally I took it to the watchmaker to be regulated. He forced the watch open, and then said it wanted cleaning and oiling, besides regulating. After this, my watch slowed down to an unbearable degree. I began to miss trains and my dinner. At last, I took this instrument to another watchmaker. He said the kingbolt was broken. To tell the truth, I had no idea what the kingbolt was. He repaired it, but what the watch gained in one way it lost in another. It would run awhile and then stop awhile, and so on.So I went with a heavy heart to one more watchmaker. While I waited and looked on I presently recognized in this watchmaker an old acquaintance (熟人) —a steamboat engineer of older days, and not a good engineer, either.“She makes too much steam and ...” he said.I gave him a heavy blow on the head and ran away.My uncle William used to say that a good watch was a good watch until the repairers got a chance to look at it. And he used to wonder what became of all the unsuccessful repairmen, and shoemakers, and engineers, and blacksmiths; but nobody could ever tell him.32. What did the author say about the jeweler?A. He made a mistake.B. He had a quick mind.C. He had a hearing problem.D. He was a quiet repairman.33. After being cleaned, oiled and regulated, the author's watch _____.A. kept perfect timeB. gained faster and fasterC. was unbelievably slowD. ran awhile and stopped awhile34. Why did the author hit the watchmaker on the head?A. He was a liar.B. He was talking nonsense.C. He treated the watch cruelly.D. He was an old enemy of the author.35. What did the author learn from his experience?A. Never get a watch repaired.B. He should listen to his uncle.C. Repair work was not an easy job.D. Unsuccessful people exist in all walks of life.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

When she and her engineer husband married a few years ago, they built a $100,000, three-bedroom home in California. Tightly sealed to prevent air leak, the house was equipped with double-- paned(双层玻璃的)windows and several other energy-saving qualities. Problems began as soon as the couple moved in, however, Priscilla's eyes burned. Her throat was often dry. She suffered from headaches and could hardly sleep. It was as though she had suddenly developed a strange illness.Experts finally find the cause of her illness. The level of formaldehyde(甲醛)gas in her kitchen was twice the largest amount allowed by federal standards for chemical workers. The source of the gas? Her new kitchen cabinet and wall-to-wall carpeting. The Ouchidas suffered the effects of indoor air pollution, which is not given enough attention partly because of the nation's drive to save energy. The problem itself isn't new. "The indoor environment was dirty long before energy saving came along", says Moschandreas, a pollution scientist at Geomet Technologies in Maryland. "Energy saving has worsened the situation in some cases."The problem appears to be more troublesome in newly constructed homes rather than old ones. Back in the days when energy was cheap, home builders didn't worry much about unsealed cracks. Because of such leaks, the air in an average home was replaced by fresh outdoor air about once an hour. As a result, the pollutants caused by most households seldom built up to dangerous level.36. It can be learned from the passage that the Ouchida's house________ .A. is well worth the money spent on its constructionB. is almost faultless from the point of energy savingC. failed to meet energy saving standardsD. was designed and constructed in a scientific way37. What made the Ouchida's new house a horrible dream?A. Lack of fresh air.B. Poor quality of building materials.C. Gas leakage in the kitchen.D. The newly painted walls.38. Why didn't people care about cracks in the past?A. Because indoor cleanness was not emphasized.B. Because energy used to be inexpensive.C. Because environmental protection was not taken into consideration.D. Because they had to build their houses in that way.39. This passage is most probably taken from an article with the title "_______".A. Energy SavingB. House BuildingC. Air Pollution IndoorsD. Traps in Building ConstructionBWASHINGTON-Laura Straub is a very worried woman. Her job is to find families for French teenagers who expect to live with American families in the summer. It's not easy, even desperate."We have many children left to place: 40 out of 75," said Straub, who works for a Paris-based foreign-exchange programme called LEC. When exchange programmes started 50 years ago, family life was more accommodating(接纳). For one thing, more mothers stayed home. But now, increasing number of women work outside the home. Exchange-student programmes have struggled in recent years to sign up host families for 30,000 teenagers who annually come from abroad to spend an academic(学术)year in the United States, as well as the thousands more who participate(参与)in the summer programmes.School systems in many parts of the US, unhappy about accepting non-taxpaying students, have also strictly limited the number of exchange students they accept. At the same time, the idea of hosting foreign students is becoming less exotic. In searching for host families, who usually receive no pay, exchange programmes are increasingly broadening their appeals (要求)to include everyone from young to retirees (退休者)."We are open to many different types of families," said Vickie Weiner, eastern regional director for ASSE, a 25-year-old programme that sends about 30,000 teenagers on academic-year exchange programmes worldwide. For elderly people, exchange students "keep us young - they really do", said Jean Forster, who is hosting 16-year-old Nina Porst from Denmark.40. From the passage we can learn that at the beginning of the exchange programmes, ________.A. all the families could host foreign studentsB. only young couples could host foreign studentsC. only those who were retired could host foreign studentsD. those who were not too old could host foreign students43. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?A. US Struggle to Find Host FamiliesB. Idea of Hosting Students Is DifferentC. Foreign-exchange Program Is Going OnD. Exchange Students Keeps Old People YoungCYou are standing under the most famous neon lights in the centre of London, waiting to cross the road. Suddenly the traffic stops. You hear the distant sounds of cheering, clapping and shouting. Then, like a multi-colored train, 2, 000 people with wheels on their feet zoom past you. You have just witnessed the London Skate, a twice weekly roller-skate event that attracts people in their hundreds and thousands London. Skate is a completely free tour of the streets of London -the only condition is that you go along on roller-skates. It lasts between two and three hours and by the end of it you have skated between 10 and 12 miles. The skate snakes sound the streets of London along several different routes. Many of the routes pass by tourist attractions such as Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. Marshals (交通协调员) go ahead of the group, stopping the traffic so that people can skate as safely as possible. It is a very good way to keep fit and can be practised anywhere there is a smooth surface. Many big cities in Western Europe and in the US now have a regular group skating event. The biggest skates take place in Paris and Munich and tens of thousands of fans show up on warm evenings. "Roller-skating is taking over the world," said Julian Grenoble, a 25-year-old ski shop employee from London. Grenoble went to the Paris-Roller (Paris skate) regularly until he moved to Britain."It's so exciting to skate in Paris. Everyone skates so fast and puts in their bestefforts!" he said. The Paris Roller is well known because of the huge attendance, the presence of marshals and the police protection. Paris is a great city for roller-skating because of its long wide streets and smooth surfaces. Roller-skating is also becoming more popular in China among young people and children. This article mainly talks about________ .A. places and streets for roller-skatingB. roller-skating in big citiesC. London Skate EventD. roller skaters in different countriesDI'm beginning to think whether my grandmother was right when she complains, as she frequently does, that children nowadays aren't as well-behaviored as they used to be. She recounts in detail how she used to be told to respect her elders and betters(上司). She was taught to speak when she was spoken to and when she went out on her own, she was reminded to say "please" and "thank you". Children in her days, she continues, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are lucky if you ever hear parents telling their children to mind her manners. If you give her the chance she then takes out of her writing desk the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she never tires of displaying. Of course when you look at pictures of her parents you feel sure that, with a father as strict looking as that, you too would have been "seen and not heard". Beside him sits his wife, with their children around her; Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff, black clothes were so burdensome (heavy) to a little girl that she hadn't enough breath left to be talkative, let alone naughty. It must have been a dull and lonely life too, for she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent to school from an early age. However, my childhood was much freer than Granny's. I went to school with my brother. I played football with him and his friends. We all spoke a common language, and we got up to the same mischief (恶作剧). I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wearing tight, stiff clothes.48. The writer thinks that her grandmother ________.A. makes mistakes about the youthB. complains too much about her childhoodC. received good education at schoolD. led an unhappy life when she was a child49. When Granny was young, children were expected________ .A. to speak to the elders loudlyB. to hear and not to seeC. to be present quietlyD. to stay still and study50. This passage is mainly about________ .A. Granny's life story in the pastB. Granny's complaints about the childrenC. women's life in different timesD. children in the past and at presentELanguage learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will "obey" instructions some time before they can speak, though the word "obey" is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficul-ties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can't be said to show the baby's intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation leads to deliberate imitation of sounds made or wordsspoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get our teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the word. Thus the use at seven months of "mama" as a greeting for his mother can not be dismissed as a meaningless simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself. I doubt, however, whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.51. Before children started speaking________ .A. they need equal amount of listeningB. they need different amounts of listeningC. they are all eager to cooperate with the adults by obeying spoken in- structionsD. they can't understand and obey the adult's oral instructions52. Children who start speaking later________ .A. may have problems with their listeningB. probably do not hear enough language spoken around themC. usually pay close attention to what they hearD. often take a long time in learning to listen properly53. A baby's first noise are________ .A. an expression of his moods and feelingsB. an early form of languageC. a sign that he means to tell you somethingD. an imitation of the speech of adults54. The problem of deciding at what point a baby's imitations can be considered as speech________ .A. is important because words have different meanings for different peopleB. is not especially important because the changeover takes place graduallyC. is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with ageD. is one that should be completely ignored because children's use of words is often meaningless55.
