Spot dictationNext, let’s talk about earthquakes on our planet. Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. Others do not have many. For example, there are few earthquakes in Britain. There is often a great noise during an earthquake. The ground vibrates. Houses fall down. Trains run off the lines. Sometimes, there is a heavy loss of human lives.Earthquakes often happen near volcanoes, but this is not always true. The centers of some earthquakes are under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the rocks. The coast is shaken and great waves appear. These waves, also known as seismic waves, or tsunamis can travel long distances and rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings. Very often fires follow the most serious earthquakes. In 1906, the great earthquake at San Francisco broke the gas pipes. The gas escaped, and soon large numbers of fires were burning in the city. The water pipes were also shaken and broken, so it was not possible to put the fires out. There was no water. The Tokyo Earthquake of 1923 happened just before noon. People were cooking meals on their fires at that time. When the ground shook, the fires shook, too. Hot materials were thrown on the different parts of the houses, some of which were made of wood. Soon 134 fires were burning in the city. What kind of building stands up best in an earthquake? A building with concrete walls is perhaps the best. A steel frame will make it even stronger. The frame holds the different parts together and the walls do not easily fall. There is less chance of fire because concrete and steel do not burn. Over the years, scientists carefully studied the results of the earthquake in different parts of the world, and they are convinced that this kind of building is the safest.【解析】根据文意,本文类似一段关于地震的讲座。

2014年3月中级口译真题:听力部分完整版第一部分听力(原文和解析)SECTION 1: LISTENING TEST (45 minutes)Part A: Spot DictationDirection:In this part of the test, you will hear a passage and read the same passage with blanks in it. Fill in each of the blanks with the words you have heard on the tape. Write your answer in the corresponding space in your ANSWER BOOKLET. Remember you will hear the passage ONLY ONCE.Good afternoon, folks! Today's topic is try jogging for fitness. When we run for fitness, exercise and pleasure, it is commonly called jogging. Jogging has become very popular in recent years. The popularity of jogging today stems from several factors. First, jogging is one of the most efficient forms of exercise. As a rule, a person jogging burns up more calories per minute than in most other sports. Running, like biking, swimming, and brisk walking, is an aerobic exercise. Such an exercise uses a great deal of oxygen. In addition, it increases the heart rate. Aerobic exercise strengthens the heart muscle so that it pumps more efficiently. This kind of exercise is also one of the best ways to improve our general health and capacity of our lungs. Jogging is also popular because almost every one of us can take part. Jogging is an activity that doesn't require any unusual skills or special coordination. Jogging is relaxing and fun. Finally, it can be done alone, with another person or in a group. For anyone who runs more than 20 miles a week, it is important to have good running shoes. Tennis shoes or sneakers won't do. Running produces stress that is three times greater than the stress of walking. With this added stress to our feet and legs, we need good shoes. The shoes should be replaced when they are worn out or worn unevenly. Cold weather poses a few problems for us joggers. The main hazard in winter-running is slipping on ice or snow. There is no danger of freezing our lungs, because our body warms the air before it reaches our lungs. In winter, we should be sure to cover the head and keep our feet as dry and warm as possible. It's best to wear layers of clothing. In summer, we must be careful not to dry out. So it is important for us to drink plenty of water on hot, humid days.

Music affects us as profoundly as anything we experience. Very many people say that music is a big part of their everyday life. We can hear evidence of this in the blurring car radio and see the jogger with his personal stereo. That is the new portability of music. That brings it everywhere people live, play and work. There are different kinds of music , for all tastes –classical, pop, rock, rap, jazz, folk –each culture has its own style. Different parts of the body resonate to different sounds and pitches, and most significantly, certain kinds of music resound powerfully in the human spirit. We can listen to music anywhere and everywhere.Listening to music can change your mood –sometimes dramatically. Some times, if you’re feeling low, it’s tempting to play slow sad music, but this would make you feel worse. And lifting tune or cheerful song can instantly improve your energy levels and your emotional well being.Music in film and television shows us how music can affect mood. A romantic drama would have a very different film score to a thriller. The old ―silent‖ films originally had a pianist in the cinema playing along, trying to strike the right mood. At times, when watching a film or TV programme, you k now what’s about to happen because of the music being played –you can anticipate the terror, such as in ―Jaws‖. There’re many times when I’ve turn down the sound during a TV programme and use subtitles because the music unsettles means so much.Playing Mozart when studying is said to increase our IQ. A recent study has showed that children who learn a musical instrument are much quicker at developing spatial awareness and problem solving skills.Relaxation music has a slow rhythm. Sounds are often synthesised and there may be added natural sounds, such as whalesong, birdsong, waves or gentle rain to help produce a feeling of calm and relaxation.
Unit 5

Unit 5. Part one. The inhabitants of a small island.2. Exercises. 1. Listen to the passage about the life on a small island and then answer the following questions. The inhabitants of a small island in the South Pacific discovered a plant which contained a powerful drug. This drug made it more difficult for them to think rationally. It stops them worrying about the future, and enables them to forget all their problems. At the same time it made it much easier for them to relax and enjoy themselves. So much so indeed that the whole population of the islands stopped working and spent all their time singing dancing and looking at the sea. Unfortunately this had a very bad effect on the country’s economy, and people began to run short of food. This however didn’t discourage the people from taking the drug. The prime minister made speeches on the TV, warning them about the drug. But nobody took any notice. And before long the economy was in ruins. This forced the government to make the drug illegal. But that only made the situation worse. The law couldn’t prevent the people from taking the drug which grew wild all over the island. On the contrary the fact that the drug was illegal merely encouraged people to take it. Eventually the government found a better solution. They exported the drug to other countries. This saved the islanders from having to work more than one day a week, and allowed them to spend the rest of their time sitting in the sun without a care of the world.2. A tiny village in France. Listen to the following passage about a small village and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.Once every year for the last few years we have visited our friends in a small tiny little village in the middle of France. And they bought a cowshed, and it was literally a cowshed not fit to live in. And they have gradually ma de it better and renovated it. And it’s in a beautiful position. It’s on the top of a hill. And for miles around you can see this beautiful countryside. And I think only one another house. So you do need a car and you take the car into the tiny little village where there are about 4 or 5 shops and a very nice restaurant where you can go and have a 5 course meal for very little money. And also near is a very big lake, because this place is in the DorDon, and there are lots of lakes there. And we go there most afternoons and wind surf and sail. Also there is a very nice market, French Market, there once a week, where you get lovely parties, lovely fresh fish, really good fresh fish and lovely bowls and baskets which the local people have made. I like this part of France very much. But I think it’s a shame that there are too many English people there.Questions:1) How often does the speaker visit his friends in France?2) In which part of France do his friends live?3) What was their house before they modernized it?4) Where is the house located?5) According to the passage which of the following statements is not true?2. I came from a small town. Listen to the following passage about a town in the US, and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.I come from a place, I come from the northern United States, Rochester Minnesota. It’s a town of about 50,000 people. And it’s a very clean town. It’s an ordinary town, fairly wealthy, but it’s a bit strange because there are a lot of transience,a lot of people who don’t live there. It’s the home of mild clinic. So there are thousands and thousands of people who come every year. The other thing is there are also a lot of foreign residents, a lot of doctors and nursesare from other countries, and so it makes what could be a really dull mid-west town something special. The library is very good. Cultural events are much more interesting than the rest of Minnesota, and actually it’s not a bad place to grow up. On the other hand I was dying to leave there. And all I could think of was getting away from the mid-west in the cold winters. You have about 6 months when it’s almost too cold to go outside. A lot of the buildings are designed so that you can walk from one to the other underground. There is a big pedestrian subway system so you can avoid all these snow.Questions:1) According to the passage what is unusual about the town as described by the speaker?2) About how many people are there in the town?3) Who are the foreign residents in the town?4) In which parts of the United States is the town situated?5) How does the speaker feel about being a child there?6) How did the people in the town avoid the snow?3. What kind of city is it? Listen to the following passage about Tokyo. And then choose the correct answer to each question you hear. What kind of city is it? It’s a very modern city. I expected that Tokyo would be quite old. But there are very few parts of it which are old in fact at all. Because it was fire bombed during the second world war by the Americans. There are one or two temples that survived, but basically it’s a city that’s being built since 1945. A lot of it is low rise, one, two, three storeys houses because of the earthquake danger, because it gets lots of earthquakes. Once you have mastered a little bit of Japanese it’s relatively easy to get around Tokyo, because they get excellent subway system and it’s quick and easy to get around. The problem is of course Tokyo is the city of 13,14,15 million people and they all want to get around at exactly the same time. So especially if you are travelling in the rush hours, 8 o’clock in the morning, 5 o’clock at night, it is a question in many of the big stations being pushed onto the train. They paid students a bit of pocket money to do this. Right in the center of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace. And that’s set in delightful gardens, but it is completely closed to the public, so nobody have seen it. In the rest of Tokyo there are 10, 12 public gardens but they tend to get very filled up of people especially during national holidays. Other than that it’s just street after street, and block after block very similar houses as I say one or two storied houses which just go on and on for mile after mile, because Tokyo extends hundreds of square miles, a massive city.Questions:1) What’s special with most of the buildings in Tokyo?2) Why is it relatively easy to get around Tokyo according to the speaker?3) How do you get on the trains in the busy periods of the day?4) Why is it a problem to go to the public gardens?5) In which part of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace located?Part 4. Listening and translation. 2. Exercises.1. Sentence translation. Listen and translate each sentence you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below.1) I am afraid we will have to change our appointment for tomorrow morning. Something unexpected came up. And I have to handle that first.2) We wish to get in touch with the local firm and set up a joint venture. We are planning to expand into the Asian market.3) I can’t decide now. I’ll have to phone my head office and inquire before I can give you a definite answer.4) The meeting was cancelled because the chairman of the board came down with the flu. He will stay away from his office for the next 2 or 3 days.5) Over 1 billion people world wide are over-weight. And that number will increase to 1.5 billion by 2015 unless current trends are reversed.2. Passage translation. Listen and translate each passage you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below. You may take notes while you are listening.1) Now in this industrial world people are inclined to choose material possessions. This is true of doctors too.

Spot Dictation:We all have problems and barriers that block our progress or prevent us from moving into new areas. Our problems might include the fear of speaking in front of a group anxiety about math problemsor the reluctance to sound silly trying to speak a foreign language. It's natural to have problems and barriersbut sometimes they limit our experience so muchwe get bored with life. When that happensconsider the following three ways of dealing with the problem or barrier. One way is to pretend it doesn't exist. Avoid itdeny itand lie about it. It's like turning your head the other wayputting on a fake grinand saying"Seethere's really no problem at all. Everything is fine."In addition to looking foolishthis approach leaves the barrier intactand we keep bumping into it. Soa second approach is to fight the barrierto struggle against it. This usually makes the barrier grow. It increases the barrier's magnitude. A person who is obsessed with weight might constantly worry about being fat. He might struggle with it every daytrying diet after diet. And the more he strugglesthe bigger the problem gets. The third alternative is to love the barrier. Accept it. T otally experience it. Tell the truth about it. Describe it in detail.Applying this process is easier if you remember o ideas. First loving a problem is not necessarily the same as enjoying it. Love in this sense means total and unconditional acceptance. Secondunconditional acceptance is not the same as unconditional surrender. Accepting a problem is different than giving up or escaping from it. Ratherthis process involves escaping into the problemdiving into it headfirstand getting to know it in detail.Often the most effective solutions ewhen we face a problem squarelywith eyes wide openthen we can move through the probleminstead of around it. When you are willing to love your problemsyou drain them of much of their energy.【评析】本文选自Dave Ellis 的著作Being a Master Student其中的一个章节:Love your problems and experience your barriers,本文主要介绍了解决问题的三种办法,第一种是直接无视它,就当不存在;第二种是正视它,挑战它,第三种则是爱上困难,充分体验。

Spot dictationYou might think that hamburgers were invented in the United States, but that is not totally true. These round, flat cakes or patties actually came from Germany in the middle of the19th century. They were brought to the United States by German immigrants who came from the city of Hamburg. That is why their name was Hamburger Stake. However, people in other places claim that they invented the hamburger.Perhaps we’ll never have a clear answer. But there is no question that the hamburger was a great hit. Why?Perhaps because at that time, industry was growing, and the kind of fast, practical and cheap food was needed for workers. The hamburger became even more popular in the1920s when the first chain of fast food restaurants was started. This chain was called White Castle. It served tiny hamburgers that were sold for only5cents each. Then,in the 1940s there came the drive-in restaurant where customers were served in their cars by waiters in uniform. And the hamburger was one of the most popular manual items.By now,the hamburger was ready to conquer the world and this happened with McDonalds, which was actually a hotdog stand at first. But by the early1950s the hotdog was replaced by the hamburger.McDonalds and other fast food restaurants spring up around the world throughout the west of the20th century. McDonalds alone has sold12hamburgers for every person in the world. The importance of the hamburger to US culture remains significant.About60%of all sandwiches that are eaten are hamburgers.According to some sources,7%of current workers in the Untied States had their first job at McDonalds. But the face of the hamburger is changing according to the times.Nowadays it is possible to buy a chicken burger,a turkey burger,a fish burger or a veggie burger.Statement:1.Mrs Jones came to us at the airport. We thought she was the secretary but she turned out to bethe president of the company.2.After Susan carefully explained her ideas at the board meeting last week, the directors all votedfor the change she’s made concerning the proposed project3.Of the students participating in our university’s research project,73%classified themselves asfreshmen and sophomores.4.Originally we had planned to buy a car by the end of last year, but then with the recentfluctuation of the crude oil prices we decided to postpone the purchase.5.Most people I know are interested in the proposed tax reform being debated in the congressbecause they hope it will lower taxes for them.6.If you’re good at managing your own time and energy,it is very likely that you can do wellboth in your schoolwork and for your career7.Mr.Paul White, thank you very much for your inquiry, but I feel the position more suits afemale applicant.Anyway,I will keep your name on file.8.Is this your best quote?I thought the prices will be coming down now given the currentsituation of financial and economic crisis.st month our manager took a ten-day business trip to Chicago, but he had to stay there for3more days situation as the negotiation turned out to be a tougher one.10.When our children are made confident that they are positive and competent individuals, theywill adapt themselves to the changing society and successfully accomplish personal goals.Talks and ConversationsPassage one(Q11-14)W:What are you laughing about?M:I just saw the serious advertisement on TV for Germen soups. It’s said our products are home-made with the freshest vegetables and fruits. Then a scene in the factory showed that products were prepared and packed by the most sophisticated machinery.W:And I am sure that the word NATURE was put on the jars and cans of the products.I think the stupidest advertisements are those that imply that you are one of a kind.If you buy the product, you will be a very special person. Now you will be just like every other one of the20billion people who bought it.M:That’s really silly. But to me,the dullest of them all is when advertisers put a celebrity on TV to talk about a particular brand of soap or about a particular car.I bet that the celebrity’s never used the product before they got the job of appearing in the commercial.W:Yeah! But most of these commercials work and people remember the product.M:I agree, here we are talking about ads we’ve seen, aren’t we?We are all influenced by those celebrities and brand names.W:I think teenagers are specially vulnerable.Advertisers try to get teenagers used to a brand because they know that in later years, the teenagers will stick to that particular product of theirs.Question11:What in the advertisement has made the man laugh?Question12:When some ads imply that you are one of a kind, what does that mean?Question13:Why does the advertiser put the celebrity on TV to talk about a particular product? Question14:According to the women, what will teenagers do if they are used to a brand?Passage two(Q15-18)Many of you may have heard of jet lag, which is a condition of space disorders, resulting from rapid travel over time zones.Such as on a jet plane. The symptom of jet lag can be quite varied, and may include loss of appetite, nausea, headache, fatigue, insomnia,or even mild depression. Here are a few tips for you to avoid jetlag,or cope if you are stricken by the condition.First, adjust your biological rhythm several days before your departure, and develop a plan to start switching to the time zone of your destination. For instance,if you will be flying from New York to Paris, where it is6hours later, get up one hour earlier for a couple of days,then2hours earlier, then3hours earlier,I will try to at least get half way to your new time zone.Turn lights on during day time in your destination, and off at night time.Second, during the time of your adjustment, especially during the flight, drink plenty of water. If you are not a big water fan, drink some other fluid that is not high in sugar, carbonation and caffeine;avoid junk food, salty food and caffeine, and alcohol on the plane.Of course I say that, but I always have a couple of drinks during the flight. If you do that, just be sure to drink as much water between drinks as possible.Thirdly, when you arrive in your destination, try to resist the urge to nap during the day time.Get outside, during the daylight hours, even it is just to sit in a caféand relax.Try to get a good night sleep for the1st couple of nights. The key is to reset your body’s natural clock to get enough rest. Finally, when you return home, use some of the same tactic above to return to your previous time zone.Q15.What’s the speaker’s definition of jet lag?Q16.What’s the difference of the time zone between New York and Paris?Q17.what does the speaker recommend if you do not want to drink much water during the flight? Q18.According to the speaker, what should you try to do if you arrived at the destination?Passage3(Q19-22)F:Come on Mr.Edision, take a seat.M:Good morning doctor.F:Now let’s get a few details.Shall we?First your age,now you’re40?M:Er,35actually,doctorF:Right,35.And your weight?M:About,105kilosF:That’s rather a lot for your height, don’t you think?M:Yes,Well,I don’t get much exercises, doctor.F:And what kind of work do you do exactly?M:I work with computers,F;So you sit most of the day,is that right?M:All day.F:Right,so tell me,do you smoke?M:Well,I used to smoke20-30a day,but now it’s about10.F:En,Have you had any illness likely?M:Nothing serious, just usual coughs and coldsF:I see. Now,let’s talk about your diet. What have you eaten this morning, for example?M:I’ve had two fried eggs,5bread,toast,butter and jam,and oh,3cups of tea.F:Well,Mr.Edison,that isn’t the best diet now,is it?What else do you normally eat?M:Beef burghers a lot,ChipsF:Dear Oh dear. And what about exercise do you have Mr.Endison?Do you play any Sports?

经典中级口译真题答案和讲评(二)TRANSLATION TEST (2) (30 MINUTES)Directions: Translate the following passage into English and write your version in the corresponding space in your ANSWER BOOKLET.
I always believe that the most efficient meeting in China is the parents’ meeting called by the school.
The parents’meeting is in full conformity/accordance with the requirements for the “building of an honest and clean government”. With respect to meetings organized by a certain trade or the unit where one works, the person wants to know whether the venue of a meeting is in a scenic area frequented by tourists and whether gifts or souvenirGetWord(“souvenir”); s will be handed out after the meeting before he decides whether to go or not. But for the parents’ meeting, nobody will ever think of this.

Passage 1
Most people in Britain like drinking tea. Britons drink a quarter of all the tea grown in the world each year. They are the world’s greatest tea drinkers. Many of them drink it on at least 8 different occasions during the day. They drink it between meals and at meals. They drink early morning tea in bed. Some morning tea drinkers have automatic tea-making machines connected to their alarm clocks. They also drink afternoon tea in their sitting room or in their gardens.

Passage2
Pollution in today’s world can be in various kinds. Factories pour their wastes into our air and into our rivers and lakes. Noisy trucks and trains pollute in a different way. They may keep us awake at night and even make it hard to think in peace and quiet during the day. Moreover, ugliness surrounds us. There are too few trees, too little grass and too much concrete. The answer, I think, is scientific planning. There must be
controlled and sustainable development within our cities. And primary consideration must be the quality of people’s lives.
Noisy trucks and trains, ugliness, the answer, scientific planning, controlled and sustainable development, primary consideration)的捕捉,记忆和导出。
