Through the mediums of television and the Internet, I imagine that everyone here has at least a nodding acquaintance with far-off Northeast Gaomi Township. You may have seen my ninety-year-old father, as well as my brothers, my sister, my wife and my daughter, even my granddaughter, now a year and four months old. But the person who is most on my mind at this moment, my mother, is someone you will never see. Many people have shared in the honor of winning this prize, everyone but her.我母亲生于1922年,卒于1994年。

but there is no question of my pleasure and pride in having it for myself.it is customary for the recipient of this award to offer personal or scholarly comment on the nature and the direction of literature. at this particular time, however, i think it would be well to consider the high duties and the responsibilities of the makers of literature.such is the prestige of the nobel award and of this place where i stand that i am impelled, not to squeak like a grateful and apologetic mouse, but to roar like a lion out of pride in my profession and in the great and good men who have practiced it through the ages.literature was not promulgated by a pale and emasculated critical priesthood singing their litanies in empty churches - nor is it a game for the cloistered elect, the tinhorn mendicants of low calorie despair.literature is as old as speech. it grew out of human need for it, and it has not changed except to become more needed.the skalds, the bards, the writers are not separate and exclusive. from the beginning, their functions, their duties, their responsibilities have been decreed by our species.humanity has been passing through a gray and desolate time of confusion. my great predecessor, william faulkner, speaking here, referred to it as a tragedy of universal fear so long sustained that there were no longer problems of the spirit, so that only the human heart in conflict with itself seemed worth writing about.faulkner, more than most men, was aware of human strength as well as of human weakness. he knew that the understanding and the resolution of fear are a large part of the writer's reason for being.this is not new. the ancient commission of the writer has not changed. he is charged with exposing our many grievous faults and failures, with dredging up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams for the purpose of improvement.furthermore, the writer is delegated to declare and to celebrate man's proven capacity for greatness of heart and spirit - I'm sorry I can't be with you in person, but please know that I am most definitely with you in spirit and honored to be receiving such a prestigious prize. Being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature is something I never could have imagined or seen coming.很抱歉我没能到现场与诸位共享此刻,但请相信,在精神上,我绝对与你们同在,我深感荣幸能获得如此声望卓著的奖项。

From an early age, I've been familiar with and reading and absorbing the works of those who were deemed worthy of such a distinction: Kipling, Shaw, Thomas Mann, Pearl Buck, Albert Camus, Hemingway. These giants of literature whose works are taught in the schoolroom, housed in libraries around the world and spoken of in reverent tones have always made a deep impression. I don't know if these men and women ever thought of the Nobel honor for themselves, but I suppose that anyone writing a book, or a poem, or a play anywhere in the world might harbor that secret dream deep down inside. If someone had ever told me that I had the slightest chanceof winning the Nobel Prize, I would have to think that I'd have about the same odds as standing on the moon. In fact, during the year I was born and for a few years after, there wasn't anyone in the world who was considered good enough to win this Nobel Prize. So, I recognize that I am in very rare company, to say the least.如果有人告诉我,我有那么一丝希望能获得诺奖,那我会认为这跟我能站在月球上的概率差不多。

I was out on the road when I received this surprising news, and it took me more than a few minutes to properly process it. I began to think about William Shakespeare, the great literary figure.I would reckon he thought of himself as a dramatist. The thought that he was writing literature couldn't have entered his head. "Is the financing in place?" "Are there enough good seats for my patrons?" "Where am I going to get a human skull?" I thought they could be heard in coffee houses or bars, maybe later in places like Carnegie Hall, the London Palladium. If I was really dreaming big, maybe I could imagine getting to make a record and then hearing my songs on the radio. That was really the big prize in my mind. Making records and hearing your songs on the radio meant that you were reaching a big audience and that you might get to keep doingwhat you had set out to do.我少年时代开始写歌时,甚至当我因自己的才能而小有知名度时,我对这些歌曲的期待都十分很有限。

Well, I've been doing what I set out to do for a long time, now. I've made dozens of records and played thousands of concerts all around the world. But it's my songs that are at thevital center of almost everything I do. They seemed to have found a place in the lives of many people throughout many different cultures and I'm grateful for that.现在,我已经朝着自己规划的路走了很久了。
