Are you looking for something to do? You might like to try one of these four experiences. Crocodile watching

Do you fancy getting up close to some of the most terrifying animals on earth? Crocosaurus Cove, in Darwin (Australia) has the “Cage of Death”. It’s an enclosure that’s lowered into a pool. This gives you a 360 degree view of a crocodile as it’s being fed. The cable broke once and the cage sank to the bottom, but they’ve fixed it since then.

Edge walk

How about walking along the edge of a building several hundred meters up in the air? If that sounds like fun, head off to the CN Tower in Toronto (Ontario, Canada). Built in 1976, the tower is 553.33 meters

tall.

The Edge walk consists of a 20-30 minute stroll along a 1.5 meter wide platform that runs around the tower’s restaurant roof. During the walk, you’re encouraged to lean forwards as you look over Toronto’s skyline.

Plastic ball rolling

Do you fancy rolling down a hill in a plastic ball?

Plastic ball rolling is popular all over the world, but the place to give it a go is in Rotorua (New Zealand). Brother David and Andrew Akers came up with the idea in 1994. A typical orb(球) is about 3 met ers in diameter, with an inner orb size of about 2 meters. There’s no brake or steering mechanism, but the inner layer of the plastic ball helps absorb the shock.

Volcano bungee jumping

If you’re looking for the adventure of a lifetime, h ow about going bungee jumping off a helicopter into the crater of a live volcano? As part of the jumping, a helicopter ride takes you to the Villarreal volcano, one of the most active in Chile. Once you’re at the drop zone, you leap off the helicopter and fall into the volcano. Finally, you enjoy the ride back to the airport flying at 130kph.

Attracted by the above? If so, please contact us. Only half price from March 22 to April 25th. For more information, please click here.

D. Volcano bungee jumping.

58. It can be inferred that all the four experiences are ______.

B

There are volcanoes(火山) all over the world. Volcanoes can destroy houses, farmlands, and forests. Volcanoes can kill a large number of people. In 1792, a Japanese volcano killed 15,000 people. In 1985,

a volcano in Colombia buried a town. And in 1991, a volcano in the Philippines could have been one of the worst events in history, but the Philippine government acted quickly. They moved over 80,000 people away from the volcano. In the end, only 700 people died. So clearly, volcanoes are dangerous. But there are also around 360 million people who live near volcanoes. This raises one question: why would they do this?

There are several different reasons. The first is that a volcano can create very good soil. The lava (火山岩), minerals, and hot ash are good for farming. They help the soil stay wet. They contain minerals that help plants grow. For example, the Indonesian island of Java has three live volcanoes. This makes people harvest several rice crops every season.

Another reason people live near volcanoes is geo-thermal energy (地热能源). People use the heat from the volcano to create electricity. This is very common. Over twenty countries around the world use some geo-thermal energy. The country of Iceland gets around 17% of their electricity in this way. Iceland also uses the heat from volcanoes to warm greenhouses.

Volcanoes can also be beautiful. The islands of Hawaii are a series of volcanoes. Over seven million people visit Hawaii every year. These people spend money on hotels, boat rides, and food. People even pay to see the volcanoes. It can be exciting to be close to something so powerful. Many people who live near volcanoes make money from these visitors.

Another reason people live around dangerous volcanoes is that they feel safe. Most volcanoes do not explode (爆炸) that often. People can live their whole life by a volcano and never see it explode. So when scientists warn people that a volcano is going to explode, they may refuse to think about the warning.

59. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Why people live near volcanoes

B. Who likes to live near volcanoes

C. The benefits of living near volcanoes

D. The danger of volcanoes

60. Which place makes good use of geo-thermal energy from volcanoes?

A. The Indonesian island of Java

B. Iceland

C. Hawaii

D. Japan

61. How do volcanoes benefit people in Hawaii?

A. They produce good soil for crops

B. They produce cheap electricity

C. They draw many visitors

D. They produce heat to warm greenhouses

62. We learn from the last paragraph that _________.

A. volcanoes seldom explode

B. people may ignore the danger of volcanoes

C. volcanoes are mostly dead ones

D. the warning given by scientists may not be correct

C

If you live in a big city, there are many things to drive you crazy on your daily commute(通勤), and it’s not just overcrowded subway trains.

Vicky Zhao is a mainlander working in Hong Kong. For her, one thing she can’t put up with is people standing on the wrong side of the escalator(自动扶梯)in subway stations.

“Escalators help us move faster and save time. It isn’t a place to rest,” the 24-year-old says. “I often see tourists block the way with their chunk y suitcases or chitchatting on the escalators during r ush hour. It annoys me to no end.”

Admitting she is not the patient type, Zhao says things are much better in Hong Kong than in cities on the mainland where “stand right, walk left” signs are often igno red.

The logic behind the “stand right, walk left”escalator etiquette(礼节) seems obvious. Even though you may want to catch your breath and just wait while you’re transported up or down, you should still consider others and leave enough space for people in a hurry, so that they can run and catch the train.

Ma ny cities’ escalators, including London’s and Beijing’s, use the “stand right, walk left” system to speed up the flow of people. (Australia is an exception and you should stand on the left side instead.) But some cities discourage people from moving on esc alators out of safety reasons. In Hong Kong’s subway stations there are regular announcements asking people to “stand still” on escalators. Even so, most people in this fast-paced metropolis observe the “stand right, walk left”etiquette.

Perhaps this is because those who walk on escalators seem to have taken the moral high ground and like to accuse those who block the way of being inconsiderate.

“Able-bodied people standing on the downward escalator are in effect robbing the people behind them of time,” sa ys Hamilton Nolan, who writes for online forum Gawker and regularly uses the New York subway. He speaks the mind of many walkers.

“Their presumptuous(专横的) need for leisure may cause everyone behind them to miss a train they would have otherwise caught. Then those people are forced to stand and wait on a subway platform for many extra minutes. Those are precious minutes of life that n one of us will get back.”

But the people who stand on escalators defend themselves by telling the walkers not to be so impatient.

In a recent story about escalator etiquette, the BBC quotes one stander as saying: “If the person is in such a rush, why not just take the stairs? Even when the escalator is packed and there’s nowhe re to move, I see these same people moaning and groaning (complaining and sighing) about not being able to pass.”

Whatever the escalator etiquette is in the place you live or visit, do what most people are doing and always be mindful of others: leave enoug h space between each other, don’t linger at the end of the escalator, and if someone is blocking your way, a simple “excuse me” is enough.

63.According to Vicky Zhao, which of the followi ng is the thing she can’t bear?

A.overcrowded subway trains

B.people standing on the wrong side of the escalator in subway stations

C.not being able to rest on the escalators

D.living in cities on the mainland

64.If you’re not in a hurry, what should you do on the es calators of London?

A.block the way with your chunky suitcases

B.chitchat

C.stand on the right side and leave enough space for people in a rush

D.run and catch the train

65.Which of the following is TRUE according to Hamilton Nolan?

A.Able-bodied people standing on the downward escalator are in robbing the people behind them.

B.Everyone needs leisure.

C.You will miss a train if you take an escalator.

D.If you miss the train, you will have to wait on a subway platform for many extra minutes, which

is a waste of time.

66.What is t he author’s opinion on escalator etiquette?

A.You should always “stand right, walk left” on the escalators.

B.You should take the stairs instead of the escalators.

C.You should moan and groan about not being able to pass.

D.You should be mindful of others.

D

It was a cold winter day. A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth (收费站). “I’m paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,” she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after

another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were informed, “Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”

It turned out tha t the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend’s refrigerator: “Practice random kindness and aimless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed her so much that she copied it do wn.

Judy Foreman spotted the same phrase on a warehouse wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down. “I thought it was beautiful,” she said, explaining why she’d taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters, “like a message from above.” Her husban d, Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter. Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting that though she liked it, she didn’t know where it c ame from or what it really meant.

Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne Herbert, a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days.

“Here’s the idea,” Anne says. “Anything you think there should be more of, do it randomly.” Her fantasies (imagination) include painting the classrooms of poor schools, leaving hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor part of town, and giving money secretly to a proud old lady. A nne says, “Kindness can build on itself as much as violence can.”

The acts of random kindness spread. If you were one of those drivers who found your fare paid, who knows what you might have been inspired to do for someone else later. Like all great events, kindness begins slowly, with every single act. Let it be yours!

67. Why did Natalie Smith pay for the six cars behind her?

A. She knew the car drivers well.

B. She wanted to show kindness.

C. She hoped to please others.

D. She had seven tickets.

68. Who came up with the phrase according to the passage?

A. Judy Foreman.

B. Natalie Smith.

C. Alice Johnson.

D. Anne Herbert.

69. Which of the following statements is closest in the meaning to the underlined sentence above?

A. Kindness and violence can change the world.

B. Kindness and violence can affect one’s behavior.

C. Kindness and violence can reproduce themselves.

D. Kindness and violence can shape one’s character.

70. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. People should practice random kindness to those in need.

B. People who receive kindness are likely to offer it to others.

C. People should practice random kindness to strangers they meet.

D. People who receive kindness are likely to pay it back to the giver.

As we all know, interpersonal relationship plays an important role in building harmonious society. Many people suggest that they should make friends who are of great benefit to their studies, so they will help each other and make greater progress with their studies. What I want to say is that each of us should have a true friend. To make friends, we should try to remember the names of the people we contact and learn not to judge people by their looks. Besides, we need to be friendly and care about them. When disagreement happens, it’s wise of us to talk it over to others. In brief, making true friends can really enable us to improve ourselves.

英语期中考试试卷 Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
