People use this expression to describe something that they do not do very often. For example, someone might say that he tries to avoid eating sweets because they are unhealthy, but will eat chocolate “once in a blue moon”. Or someone who does not usually like to go to the beach might say “I visit the shore (海滨)once in a blue moon.” While many people use this phrase, not everyone knows the meaning behind it.The first thing to know is that the moon itself is never really blue. This is just an expression. In fact, the phrase “blue moon” has something to do with the shape of the moon, not the color. As the moon travels around the earth, it appears to change shape. We associate (联系) certain names with certain shapes of the moon. For example, when we can see a small part of the moon, it is called a crescent moon. A crescent is a shape that looks like the tip of a fingernail(指甲).When we cannot see the moon at all, it is called a new moon. When we can see the whole moon, it is called a full moon. Usually, there is only one full moon every month. Sometimes, however, there will be two full moons in one month. When this happens, the second full moon is called a “blue moon”.Over the next 20 years, there will only be 15 blue moons. As you can see, a blue moon is a very rare event. This fact has led people to use the expression “once in a blue moon” to describe other very rare events in their lives.(1)Which of the following would be a good example of using the phrase “once in a blue moon”?A.Simon often tells jokes. Simon tells joke once in a blue moon.B.Tom rarely remembers to do exercise. Tom does exercise once in a blue moon.C.Mary likes to go shopping every weekend. Mary goes shopping once in a blue moon.D.Cindy hates to stay up, but she stays up every day. Cindy stays up once in a bluemoon.(2)Which of the following is another example of something that has a crescent shape?A.The letter “O”.B.The letter “M”.C.The letter “H”.D.The letter “C”(3)What does the underlined part “This fact” in the last paragraph refer to?A.A blue moon is a very rare event.B.The moon appears to change shape.C.The moon itself is never really blue.D.A blue moon has something to do with the shape of the moon.BYou probably know that you can do many of the things with the thousands of different muscles in your body. But have you ever thought about how different the muscles in an animal’s body are fro m yours? An animal’s muscles are made to do the things that are most important for its life.Lions are hunters. They depend on their ability to catch other animals. Lions must be fast in order to catch their prey. The powerful muscles in their back legs allow them to run at speeds ofmore than 30 miles per hour. They can also jump a distance of more than 35 feet. The strong muscles in their front legs help them catch their prey.Snakes also use their muscles for hunting prey and for movement, but their muscles work in very different ways as lions do. Because snakes do not have any legs, they use their muscles to push against the ground or other objects to move themselves forward. Their muscles also allow them to eat things that seem much too large. For example, a snake may eat an egg that is larger than the width of its body. How does this happen? The snake’s strong neck muscles work together to push the egg down the mouth. The el ephant’s long nose has a lot of muscles. Scientists believe that the nose alone has more than 100,000 muscles! This is because the elephant uses its nose much in the same way that people use their hands and fingers. Even though the nose is large, it can perform surprisingly tasks. For example, an elephant can pick up a small leaf from the ground. The nose can also be a powerful tool. An elephant can use its nose to pick up a tree by its roots or even to lift a baby elephant. The great muscles of these animals seem pretty unbelievable. But the muscles in your body work exactly the way you need them to. After all, it might be fun to be able to jump a distance of 30 feet, but as a human being, there is just not much need for it.(1)The underlined word “hunters” in Paragraph 2 means persons or animals that . .A.keep animals for funB.raise animals for meatC.catch animals for foodD.run after animals forexercise(2)According to the passage, what makes the muscle in your body different from an animal’s?A.The exercise.B.Your parents.C.The environment.D. Your needs.(3)Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? (■ stands for a paragraph)D.A. B.C.CAfter living and teaching in China for 10 months, my wife and I returned to California to visit our children and friends. Many of them asked what we liked most about China. The friendly people, the wonderful food, and the beautiful sights were at the top of our list. Then one night, after yet another restaurant dinner with friends, I realized that there was one other thing that I really liked about China: No tipping.Tipping is a subject that has long interested me.In America, the three kinds of services that need tipping are waiters/waitresses, taxi drivers, and barbers. The standard tip is now between 15 % and 20% of the bill, depending on the quality of service. Why these three particular services deserve this special treatment is a mystery to me. Why am I supposed to tip a waiter for bring me food when I don’t need to tip the flight attendant on an airplane for doing the same thing? Why do I need to tip a taxi drive, but not the bus driver? Why am I expected to tip the barber for cutting my hair but not the dentist for fixing my teeth? I have been a teacher for 39 years. No one has ever tipped me after a particularly successful class or lecture. The whole concept of tipping doesnˈt make any sense. I have heard that there are some expensive restaurants in major cities in the US where the restaurant does not give the waiters any salary at all due to the large amounts of the tips. The tipping problem in many European countries is solved by adding a 15 per cent to the bill.I prefer the Chinese solution: No tipping at all. When I was visiting the US this summer, I went out to dinner several times with friends. Having spent 10 month in China not even thinking about tipping, I found it irritating to have to spend extra money on the meal -- especially when the amount of the tip would every often buy a meal in China. While I understand why China, as a developing nation, has gradually accepted many Western customary practices, I hope the Chinese are wise enough to never start the unnecessary practice of tipping.(1)What made the writer realize that he liked no tipping most about China ?A.Talking with his friends .B.Returning to California.C.Giving a large amount oftips.D.Having dinner in a restaurant.(2)If the bill is$200 in an European restaurant, how much should a customer pay as a tip?A. $20B. $30C. $50D. $10 0(3)Which of the sentences is true?A.All kinds of services need tipping in the US .B.The writer hoped China would never start tipping .C.The writers whole family lived in China for 10 months.D.China has never accepted any western customary practices(4)What can be the best title for the passage?A.Please stop tipping.B.My experiences in chinaC.There is no tipping in chinaD.Tipping in differentcountries.五.任务型阅读A teacher was giving talk to his students on how to deal with stress(压力). He raised a glass of water and asked the students, “How heavy do you think this glass of water is?”All the students tried and their answers were from 20g to 500g.“It does not matter on how heavy the glass of water is. It depends on(取决于) how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will call an ambulance(救护车). It is the same weight, but it seems to become heavier and heavier as time passes by.”“If we carry our burdens(负担) all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, because the burden is becoming heavier and heavier.” “What you have to do is to put down the burden, so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on. Otherwise I think that we will break down on the half way and can’t realize our dream. All of us should really keep in mind.”So before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down. How high is it? What colour is it? What birds can live above it? These questions are difficult to answer, aren't they?In fact, the sky has no colour. Then why does the sky look blue?We know that there is air around the world. When planes fly, they need air to lift their wings. Planes can't fly very high. That is because the air gets thinner when they go higher. The same will happen to us if we go high enough. If we go up about 1, 200 kilometres from the earth, we'll findno air there. Some birds can fly into the sky as high as a plane, but they cannot fly or live without air.Looking up above us, you will see the blue sky with white clouds. It is usually light blue. The colour would be bluer when you see on the top of a high mountain. And you will see fewer clouds in the sky between you and the sun.Sometimes the sky doesn’t look blue. When the sun rises and falls, you will see red, orange, and other colours in the sky. Such are the most beautiful moments of the day.Who can see the colours of the sky high above the earth? The astronauts(宇航员)! They can see those beautiful colours of the sky from outer space. However, before flying into outer space, they sit in a spaceship high above the earth, and there is no air at all. The sky would be that dark and its colour would be black. Now you may understand that we see colours because the air scatters(使散射) the sunlight. Light travels through the air. Without air, there would be no light or colours.(1)Planes can’t fly as high as possible because .A.the sky is blueB. the air becomes thinnerC. the sky has no colourD. the wings are heavier(2)When you stand on the top of a high mountain, you will see .A.more airB. bluer skiesC. more coloursD. more clouds(3)We might see many colours in the sky at during the day.A. 6:00 a.m.B. 9:00 a.m.C. 1:00 p.m.D. 3:00 p.m.(4)Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.The sky itself has the blue colour.B.There is no air when we are about 1, 200 metres from the earth.C.The astronauts can fly into outer space in a spaceship with no air at all.D.We can see colours because the air scatters the sunlight.CI was in line waiting to pay. When things happen so fast, maybe you can’t understand clearly what you are doing or learning, so it is important to stop yourself to think about what you have been doing or learning.Self-reflection (反省) means slowing down and calming yourself, including calming your mind. Some people like to do self-reflection only in their mind. Others keep a diary. What’s more, taking notes is also OK. Each method (方法) works. You can follow the steps to do self-reflection.First, choose the proper (合适的) time to do it. School textbooks are divided into (被分成) units of study. This makes it easier to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you finish a unit of study. Sometimes you know it's the time because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.Then, find a quiet place and take out your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Finally, think about things that you are not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a maths problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.Successful students always know self-reflection is important. Summer is finally here for most of us. Sadly, summer is not so pleasant to people in a bit less lucky places, where air conditioning (空调) is not easy to get for most of them. But as a saying goes, where there is a will, there is a way, especially for those who like doing ityourself(DIY). A young man from Bangladesh(孟加拉国) designed an air conditioning system called the Eco Cooler, one that does not require power, and is made of the world’s most common waste—plastic bottles. The Eco Cooler is super simple to build—no special engineering skills are required. First, to fix it,a window should be taken away and replaced(替代) by it. Second, a board should be cut into the size of a window. Some bottle—neck sized holes should then be cut onto the board. Then, the funnel—shaped(漏斗状)bottlenecks, cut from the plastic bottles, should be put into the holes. The next step is to fix the design onto the window frame(框) with the wider side facing outwards. And this is it.The Eco Cooler then works by catching the winds and sending them inside the building. It can reduce the temperature of a room by as much as 5°C—a big difference when looking at comfortable 25°C compared to uncomfortable 30°C.The idea of the inventor, Ashis Paul, was to show his great product to as many People as possible. For this purpose, he received help from some groups of volunteers. Together, they offered to help local people build and fix the units, as well as teach them how to make them themselves. Yes, the Eco Cooler is not a super high—tech air conditioning system, but it is one that can make abig difference.( B)When building the Eco Cooler, we should pay special attention to .A. the shape of the windowB. the direction of bottlenecksC. the temperature of the outsideD. the weight of the board( C)What can we learn from the passage?A. Ashis Paul is a clever inventor and a successful businessman.B. An Eco Cooler can fix the room temperature to comfortable 25°C.C. The new invention of Eco Cooler is friendly to the environment.D. Local people will replace their air conditioner with an Eco Cooler. ( D)What’s the best title of this passage?A. DIY air conditioning made from plastic bottlesB. Eco Cooler——a super high—tech air conditionerC. Why do we need an Eco Cooler in summer?D. A strong—willed inventor and his DIY dream13. How to investigate①Planning•Decide on a scientific problem to investigateFor example, a student named Mary has decided to research into how quickly sugar dissolves(溶解) in water.•Write down your hypothesisYou may already have an idea of what you expect to happen in your investigation. This idea is called your hypothesis. It may not be right! It is just an idea, though it may be based on work in science which you have done before. The aim of your investigation is to test your idea.•Decide what variables(变量) you are dealing withThings like temperature, size, weight, and colour are called variables. Variables are things you canmeasure(测量).In your investigation, you have to decide what the variables are, which ones you will keep fixed, and which you will change. You need to change just one variable at a time. If lots of variables change at once. it won’t be a good test.•Decide what equipment you need, and in what order you will do things •Prepare tables for your results②Getting your evidence(数据)•Make your measurements, and record your results③Reaching conclusions•Look for patterns in your results•Present your conclusionsWhat links(关联) did you find between any of the variables? Howwould you explain these links?④Checking your findings•Compare your conclusions and hypothesisDo your results support your idea?( D)What does the underlined word “hypothesis” most probably mean?A. reasonB. resultC. methodD. guess( A)In Mary’s investigation, which of the following about the variables is true?A. She can only change one variable at a time.B. Some of the variables can’t be measured.C. Her weight and age can be the variables.D. The temperature of water cannot be a variable.( A)What is the passage mainly about?A. How to do a scientific research.B. How to explain a scientific finding.C. How to deal with a chemistry problem.D. How to understand some chemistry knowledge.14. We wake up very early to go to school, maybe even earlier to meet witha teacher, complete our extracurricular(课程以外的) activities, come home to have a quick dinner, talk for eight minutes with our parents and do homework until we fall asleep. But then we remember. We have to look at the American College Test(ACT) exercises one more time. Half asleep, we run downstairs to get the ACT book, and start studying. After this we finally get to turn off the lights and drift away to sleep. And then six hours later, we do it all over again. In my health class, my teacher told us that teenagers need at least eight to nine hours of sleep each night. The sad truth is, with so much to do every day, high school students cannot keep to this sleep schedule (安排).Let me ask you all a question: Doesn’t it seem more humane(人道的) to give a teenager perhaps two hours of homework each night? This would allow us to have the eight to nine hours of much needed sleep. Or does it seem better to pile students with five hours of work a night? It leaves us very little time to relax, therefore reducing the time that we can sleep. In my opinion. the present structure(结构) of the junior year of high school doesn’t work well. Junior year of high school is a time for growth. By this time many students have the ability to think creatively, and solve challenging problems. Homework is important for a student’s growth. But do we really need to spend countless hours a night doing it? Too much homework can only lead to too little sleep and too low an ability. I do think it is time to change the structure, so that we sleep at home, and learn at school.( A)In the first paragraph the writer gives .A. a picture of the present daily life of high school studentsB. an example of an ideal daily life of high school studentsC. a reason for high school students to live a busy daily school lifeD. a suggestion of what high school students should do to pass ACT ( D)From the last paragraph we know that the writer thinks .A. Junior year of high school is the most important growth periodB. challenging problems are needed for a teenager’s growthC. the ability to think has nothing to do with homeworkD. the present structure leads to students often sleeping in class ( C)Why does the writer write this article?A. To prove the role of enough sleep in teenagers’ growth.B. To complain about the problems in the system of the ACT.C. To ask for a change for less homework and more sleep.D. To discuss the relationship between sleep and homework.15. After a while attention to Tom ended, and the usual school murmur (嗡嗡读书声)rose upon the boring air once more. Now the boy began to steal secret glances(偷看) at the girl. She noticed it, made a face at him and gave him the back of her head for the space of a minute. When she slowly faced around again, an apple lay before her. She pushed it away. Tom gently put it back. She pushed it away again, but with less animosity(敌意). Tom patiently returned it to its place. Then she let it remain. Tom wrote on his paper, “Please take it—I got more. “ The girl glanced at the words, but made no sign. Now the boy began to draw something on the paper, hiding his work with his left hand. For a time the girl refused to notice; but her human curiosity(好奇心) soon began to show itself by hardly noticeable(明显的) signs. The boy worked on, seemingly not aware. The girl made some non—committal(含糊的) efforts to see, but the boy did not display that he was aware of it. At last she couldn’t bear it and whispered:“Let me see it. “Tom partly uncovered the picture of a house with some smoke rising from the chimney(烟囱). Then the girl’s interest began to fasten itself upon the work and she forgot everything else. When it was finished, she gazed a moment, then whispered:“It’s nice—draw a man. “The artist created a man in the front yard; she was satisfied, and whispered:“It’s a beautiful man——now draw me in it. “Tom drew an hour—glass(沙漏) as the body, a full moon as her head and some arms added to it. The girl said:“It’s ever so nice—I wish I could draw. No one has ever taught me that. ““It’s easy, “ whispered Tom, “I’ll learn you. ““Oh, will you? When?”“At noon. Do you go home to dinner?”“I’ll stay if you will. ““Good—that’s a deal. What’s your name?”( B)What probably happened in the classroom before this passage?A. The girl introduced herself to the boy.B. Something noticeable happened to the boy.C. They had a lesson on how to draw.D. The boy drew an apple for the girl.( C)What most probably happened to the apple finally?A. Eaten by the boy because the girl didn’t accept it.B. Eaten by the boy because it was the last one he had got.C. Eaten by the girl because they finally became friends.D. Eaten by the girl because the boy was drawing all the time.( B)What can we learn from the 2nd paragraph?A. The boy didn’t want the girl to show interest in his drawing.B. The girl didn’t want to show interest in the boy’s drawing noticeably.C. The boy didn’t notice the girl trying several times to see his drawing.D. When a thought has found wordsPoetry(诗歌) is the forgotten child of literature. Few people read it for pleasure. In Western highschools, poetry is seldom taught because it is considered to be out of date and have little to do with the life of today’s students. In ChinA. however. poetry is still an important part of the curriculum(课程). Recently, the Ministry of Education has increased the number of ancient Chinese poems for students to memorize and recite, from 14to 72. Why is it important to learn poems?First of all, poetry is a necessary part of learning traditional Chinese culture. It is a path to understanding your history and your society. It is also the key to understanding the thoughts and feelings that are common to everyone but that we may be unable to express—the joy of Li Bai dancing with the moon, for example. Everyone has feelings of joy, love, loneliness, sadness and even anger, and a good poem can put those feelings into words and bring us self—understanding.Poems can also express beauty. In a few short lines, even something common can become beautiful. Here is a poem called Fog by Carl Sandberg:The fog comes/on silent haunches(弓腰)/and then moves on. Yes, fog does move smoothly, silently and like a cat, and Sandberg catches that feeling and image(形象), and makes it beautiful.Of course, to really enjoy poetry, it has to be read aloud. After all, a poem is really just a song without music. Most ancient poetry, like Homer’s Epics(《荷马史诗》) and China’s Book of Songs, was spoken for hundreds of years before it was written. The American poet Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words. “ You are lucky that you now have seventy—two poems to learn!【答案】1. different.2. Today my mum took me to a new show at the museum near the park. I was surprised to find that it was a show of different kinds of clothes. Mum knows how much I love fashion—I buy fashion magazines every week and even try to design clothes myself. There were clothes from 20 different countries. As well as modern clothes, there were examples of things people wore hundreds of years ago.I could not believe that people used to wear those uncomfortable things, such as large black hats and heavy coats from the UK, or wooden shoes from Holland. The show will run for one more week—I might go back next weekend with my friends and have another look!。
