Police in the United States are searching for a whitegunman, who shot dead nine people during a prayermeeting at an African-American church in the southerncity of Charleston. From Washington, here is TomBakemen.
“Officers are now searching for the gunman,who they say was white and in his twenties, and
they aretreating the attack as a hate crime. The Mayor ofCharleston Joseph Riley said it was
an unspeakabletragedy.
“It is the large death totally act that one cannotpossibly imagine. And we will bring that person tojustice.” The shooting took place at one of the oldestAfrican-American churches in the southern United States,which traces its roots back two centuries. The police havesaid they would put all of their energies into finding theman who carried out the attack.”

The British government has announced what it says is the biggest cut in state spending since
the Second World War. The Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne told
parliament the savings were essential to drag Britain back from what he called the economic
brink. A hundred and thirty billion dollars will be cut over four years. The government says
that it expects nearly half a million public sector jobs to be lost. Here is our economics
correspondent Andrew Walker.
Mr Osborne's aim is to get the government's rising debt under control. As expected, he
protected health, schools and overseas aid from cuts, but there will be reductions in spending
in most areas, including defence and especially welfare. The background to the cuts is a
sharp increase in government borrowing, mainly due to the decline in tax revenue that

“As every high school child knows, water runs through absolutely every we do,” says World Bank Water Sector Manager Julia
Bucknall. “We can’t grow any food without water. We can’t live without water. We can’t run our cities without managing
our water properly.”
The floods in Pakistan, she says, show the importance of having a good water management policy in place.
"Both from the resource point of view, in the sense of the floods, but also from the basic management of water supply and
sanitation. That's what is going to be killing a lot of people now after the immediate impact of the floods," she says.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators in Hong Kong have continued their protest into a fourth night
after paralyzing key parts of the city during the day. The crowds occupying central Hong Kong
and other areas swelled after clashes on Sunday night with police who fired teargas to try to
disperse them. Our China editor Carrie Gracie sent this report.
Throughout another hot day on the streets, Hong Kong's democracy protestors paralyzed traffic in
the financial district. They kept busy handing out masks and goggles and filling plastic bottles
with homemade remedies to counter teargas. As night fell, thousands upon thousands joined the
demonstrators' ranks, many wearing the yellow ribbons that symbolize their points of democracy.
