1. aggravate v. 加重;使严重;恶化
这个词的意思就是使某种情况变得更坏,所以他的同义词是worsen,但在写作中使用aggravate显然会比worsen高级许多。
Smoking aggravates his cough.
吸烟使他的咳嗽变得更严重了。
另外,在口语中aggravate也可表示激怒,它是指因他人长时间的反复行为而使人感到不快。
2. alleviate v. 减轻;使……缓和
