1-The North Wind and the Sun

One day ,the North Wind met the Sun .They began to quarrel .The North Wind is a cold wind .It blows with great force .In Europe it brings rai and snow ,especially in northern Europe .

“I’am stronger than you ”,the North Wind said to the Sun .“I can blow the roofs off houses .I can make typhoons and huge waves on the sea .”

“No ,”said the Sun quietly ,“I’am stronger than you .I can melt ice and snow .I make the trees blossom and the flowers bloom. ”

A man came walking along ,wearing a big coat .

“Look at that man ,”said the North Wind .“I can blow off his

coat .You can’t do that .”

The North Wind blew hard at the man .The man’s coat blew open. The North Wind blew with more force .The man said “I’am cold ”.He did up his coat and turned up his collar .The North Wind howled and blew harder still .The man was nearly blown off the coat .He put his hands deep into the pockets of his coat and he kept on walking .The wind could not blow off his coat .

The Sun smiled .

“Now watch me ,”he said .“I’ll show you a better way to take off the man’s coat .”

The Sun came out from behind a cloud .It shone down on the

man .The man said ,“I’am warm .”He turned down the collar of his coat .The Sun shone more strongly upon the man .The man began to feel hot .He looked up at the sky .

“The sun is shining ,”he said ,“and the wind has gone .I’am hot .I’ll take off my coat .”

He undid his coat and took it off .He put the coat on his arm and walked away .The Sun laughed ,but the North Wind howled angrily and rushed away to the hills .

Mrs Turner lives in a small town .Her husband died in a traffic accident and left her little money .She was hungry and lived a cold room in winter .A shopkeeper had pity on her and told her to cook for him .He pays her some money and she doesn’t worry about food or clothes any longer .

The woman is often ready to help others .She does her best to give something to the poor persons .Sometimes she would rather be

hungry ,she gives her food to the poor .And she’s liked and everybody knows her .

One Sunday Mrs Turner rested at home .A few men came to beg something .She hardly gave all to them and left only some food for supper .That is evening ,while she was doing some sewing in the

room ,she heard somebody knocking at the door .She opened the door and saw an old man standing outside .

“Please have a pity on me ,Mrs Turner ,”said the old man .“I’ve eaten nothing for days .Could you give me some food ,please ?”

“Oh ,I’am sorry ,sir ,”said the woman .“I have neither money nor food now .I can do some sewing for you if you clothes are worn out .”

“It’s very kind of you ,madam ,” the old man said happily .“I Have a button here .Please sew a jacket on it .”

3-You Cook Better Now Than Before

Robert is twenty-six and works in a middle school .Two and a half years ago he was ill in hospital and there he knew a beautiful nerse called Ann .The girl took care of him and he made friends with her .They loved each other .About six months later they married .

Robert likes reading .When he comes home ,he always reads some newspapers or books .Ann begins to cook in the kitchen .And when the meat is roasted ,she always tells her husband to cut it in two .Then they begin have supper together .After supper they go out for a walk ,or they go to the cinema .And they enjoy themselves.

One day Robert planted trees with his students .They climed up a mountain and worked hard .When he got home ,he felt hungry .His wife roasted a piece of chicken that evening and told him to cut it .This time he chose a bigger piece of chicken for himself and gave her the smaller one .

“I remember ,dear ,”Ann said with a smile .“When we married ,you always gave me the bigger meat .Why do you give me the smaller meat to me now ?”

Robert felt shy and didn’t know what to say .He thought for a while and said ,“You cook better now than before .”

4-What Is It ?

There is an ancient Greek Story about a monster .It asked people a question .If they could not answer correctly ,it killed them !This is the question :

It has four legs in the morning .

It has two legs at noon .

It has three legs in the evening .

What is it ?

The monster killed many people .Then one man succeeded in guessing the correct answer :It is a man .When a man is a baby (the morning of his life ),he crawls on hands and feet (four “legs ”).When he

is fully grown ,he walks on two feet .When he is old ,he walks with a stick ,so he has three “legs ”.

Questions like these are called “riddles ”.You will find them in all languages .Some are hard and some are easy .Here is an easy one : It has legs but cannot walk .What is it ?

It is a chair .Can you think of other answer to that riddle ?

5-Perhaps It Isn’t Me

Mr Green was clever three years ago .And few man could trouble him .But one day his car was hit by a truck and his head was badly

hurt .Now he often forgets something and his thinking is different from others .

Last morning it was very cold and it snowed hard .Mr Green woke up early .He put on his coat and began to walk in the street while people were sleeping .He wanted to read newspapers but the post office was closed .He had to go back and go to bed again .As soon as he took off his clothes ,the door was knocked at .He got up and opened it .Two hunters came in .They looked at him carefully and then said ,“We saw a dead man just now .We thought it was you .”

“Really?”Mr Green said in surprise .“Where ?”

“In the forest .”

“It’s impossible !”Said the man .“I didn’t go there at all the morning .”

“But he died last night .”

“What clothes does he wear ,then ?”

“A blue coat like yours and brown trousers .”

“I cann’t believe you ,”said Mr Green .“And what colour are his socks ?”

“Black .”

Mr Green became happy .He showed his socks to the two hunters and said ,“Look !My socks are yellow !”

6-I’ll Play an Old Alluring Woman

Mrs Jenkins is a woman of forty .Her husband is a famous doctor and works in a big hospital in the city .The man is very busy .So he told his wife who was a nurse in his office to resign her job .The woman stays at home now .She does all housework and look after her husband and daughter Mabel .

Mrs Jenkins likes all kinds of clothes .She often goes to the clothing shows and buys the most modern clothes for herself .Of course they pays Mr Jenkins much and she’s never worried about money .Sometimes she shows them to her husband ,but the poor man hopes to have a rest and

always think they’re nice .The woman is happy and goes to the parties in them .

It was December 22yesterday .Mable came back with her friends while her mother was trying on a new sweater in front of a mirror .The girl said she was going to borrow some clothes of her mother’s .The woman was happy and agreed .It took Mabel nearly one and a half hours to choose a suit of proper clothes .

“Oh ,my dear !”Called out the women .“You’ve chosen the most beautiful clothes of mine !By the way ,what do you borrow them for ?”

“We ‘ll hold a Christmas eveing tomorrow ,”answered the girl .“I ‘ll play an old alluring woman !”

7-It’s My Birthday Today

Mr White was a soldier when he was young .He was brave and killed a lot of enemies and he was also hurt in the fights .He lost his right

eye ,his nose and a leg .But he was givern much money for it and he nealy had all the things he wanted .Only one thing troubled him :no girl would marry such a man like him though he was rich .

And when he was fifty ,a friend of his brought a young woman to him .She wasn’t beautiful enough but strong .Her father died in an accident and she couldn’t live any longer because she could neither read nor write and nobody liked a woman like her .Mr White was happy and

married her .And two years later she had a son Mike .Her husband liked the boy very much and did his best to satisfy him .The boy did nothing at home and he hated everything but playing .Of course he learned nothing at school .

Mr White died when Mike was fifteen .He left some money and the nice house to his son .The young man spent all the money on beautiful clothes and nice food in two years and then had nothing .He began to beg in the street .

One day he was given some food and wasn’t hungry .And he began to go to an old ,broken house in which he lived .A kind-hearted woman stopped him and asked ,“We have some leftovers here .Do you want some ?”

“I’am sorry ,madam ,”said Mike .“Now I wanted only some cake .”

“Oh ?Why ?”

“Because it’s my birthday today !”

8-I’ve Asked a Few Policemen to Come

Mr Liang worked in a factory .As a driver ,he was busy but he was paid much .His wife was an able woman and did all the

housework .When he came back ,she took care of him and he never did anything at home .So he had enough time when he had a holiday .A few friends of his liked gambleing and he learned it soon .So he was

interested in it and hardly forgot anything expect gambling .He lost all his money and later he began to sell the television ,watches and so on .His wife told him not to do it but he didn’t listen to her .She had to tell the police .He and his friends were punished in it .And he was hardly sent away .After he came out of lockup ,he hated her very much and the woman had to leave him .

It was New Year’s Day .Mr Liang didn’t go to work .He felt lonely and wanted to gambling again .He called his friends and they came

soon .But they were afraid the police would come .He told his

five-year-old son to go to find out if there were the policemen

outside .They waited a long time and didn’t think the police would come and began to gambling .Suddenly opened the door and in came a few policemen .

“I saw there weren’t any policemen outside ,daddy ,”said the boy .“So I went to the crossing and asked some to come .”

9-A Shoe Pattern

Harry is eighteen now .He studies in a middle school .His parents like him very much and hope he can become a famous man .So they often tell him to study hard and they do all for him .They call him at six in the morning ,after breakfast his father takes him to school in a car and in the afternoon ,as soon as the young man comes back ,the supper is ready .Of

course ,he never washes his clothes or goes to buy something in the shops .

Once Harry’s father was sent to London on business .He would stay there for half a year .Leaving ,he told his wife to take good care of their son .The woman had to get up earlier and did all what her husband did before .And two months later she was so tied that she was ill in bed .Now the young man got into trouble .He couldn’t do any housework .He had to do as his mother told him .Even he didn’t know where to get on the bus !

Yesterday Harry’s mother found his shoes were worn out and told him to buy a new pair in the shop .But he didn’t know how to

choose .The woman had a sign and gave him a shoe pattern and told him to buy a pair of shoes himself .It’s Saturday today and Harry doesn’t go to school .With a policeman’s help ,he found a shop .The shopkeeper was friendly to him .The man brought a lot of shoes and asked him to choose .When he was trying on a pair ,suddenly she remembered something and took them off .The man surprised and asked ,“What’s the matter ,young man ?”

“I am sorry ,I’ve left the shoes pattern at home !”

10-My Father Is as Old as Me

Mr Gao lives in a town .When he was twenty-five ,his son was

born .He calls him Gao Ling .The little boy is clever .He and his wift love him very much .

It’s September 1today .A few school year begins Gao Ling is happy and wears his most beautiful clothes .He’s going to school with his new bag .

“Let me take you to school ,dear ,”said Mrs Gao .

11-Tell Them Not to Bring My Hat Here

Mr Smith is a shopkeeper and has a few shops in the town .He managed them well and got much money until ha was hurt in a traffic accident .After he came out of hospital ,people find he often forgets something and he isn’t as able as before .

One day he was told that it would be an important officials birthday the next day .He told his secretary to buy some expensive presents .And later on he forget the date and that afternoon ,when he was having

lunch ,his secretary told him about it .He became angry and told the woman to call his driver at once .He made the man drive as fast as possible .Bad luck !An accident happened and they had to stop to

wait .When they got to the restaurant where the birthday was held ,it was two .And the party had been on for half an hour .He hurried to get

off .Suddenly he stopped to tell his driver ,“Oh ,dear !I have left my hat at home .It isn’t polite to go to the party without a hat .Go and ring them

up .Tell them to bring it here at once !”

“But you’re wearing your hat ,Mr Smith ,”said the driver .

The man touched his head and found his driver was right .So he

said ,“Well ,then .Go and tell them on the telephone not to bring my hat here .”

12-We’re the Most Modest in Our Class

Peter lives next to Herry and they study in the same class .They go to school and come home together .They like playing football and spend much time on it .When they’re in the classroom ,they hardly listen to what their teacher’s say .Of course they only concern themselves about the football matches .Of course they fall behind their classmates .

The summer holiday began last week .Peter’s grandma called the boy and said it was cool in her village and told him to go there .He hadn’t seen her for years and missed her very much .He asked Herry to go there with him .The boy had never lived in the country and agreed .After a four-hour bus they got to a small village between a river and a few mountains .The old woman was very happy when she saw them .She brought out some fruit and nuts before she cooked the chick and

fish .After a good dinner Peter showed his friend around the village .And they had a good swim in the cool river .

After supper the old woman began to ase Peter about his life in the school .Of course he said he was the best in the class .It made the best in the class .It made his grandma happy .She sai ,“Be modest ,Peter !”

“You’re right ,granny ,”said the boy .“Herry and I are the most modest in our class !”

Mr Jenkins worked in a middle school . 14-A Foolish Chicken

Christmas was coming .Mr Smith had no money to buy any presents for his children .His wife was ill and he spent a lot of money on her medicine .And the harvest was bad and all his family were going go be hungry the next spring .He was quite worried about it .

“We had only a cock ,”said Mrs Smith one day .“You’d better take it to the town .Sell it there and buy some cakes and sweets for our children .”

Once Robert net several friends in the capital .Some of them were famous in their country .They knew nothing about their lame friend .It made him unhappy and he asked them to visit his farm .They agreed and went there with him .They saw a beautiful house with a big garden when they got there .They found he had a lot of sheep ,pigs and cows .Robert and his family warmly received the guests from London .The next morning he took them to his farm .It was so large that they couldn’t see the other end and it surprised them all .

“It’ll take you two days to reach the other end of my farm by

car !”Robert said happily .

“I think something is wrong with your cars !”one of the guests said with a smile .

16-At Least I’m Not Lost

Rechard has lived in a city since he was born .Now he ia sixteen and studies in a middle school .He didn’t go out of the city until he and his friends had a picnic in a cool village last summer .

They all got up early that morning .They took a bus and it took them about an hour to get to the quite place .They sang ,drew and swam in the river when they felt hot or cooked some food when they were hungry .In the afternoon they climbed a hill .There was a forest on it .The girls began to pick flowers and the boys looked for some fruits there .Rechard saw a beautiful bird in a tree. He liked it very much and wanted to catch it .But it flew to another tree as soon as it saw him .He ran there but it flew away again .And soon he couldn’t see his friends .He shouted, but nobody answered him .He was afraid and walked through the forest .At last he saw a farmer cutting a tree .He quickly came up to him along the narrow road .

“Hi ,”shouted the boy .“What place is it here ?”

“A forest ,”came the answer .

“I know it’s a forest ,”said Rechard .“How can I find the nearest village ?”

“Along the roads .”

“How foolish you are !”said the young man .“There are several roads here .Which of them must I go along ?”

“Yes ,I’m foolish ,”answered the farmer .“But at least I haven’t lost my way !”

17-We Can’t Pay for Them

John is thirteen now .He began to study in a middle school two years ago .His family is in a small village and it’s nearly five kilometers from the school .He has to get up early in the morning .After a quick breakfast he has to run to school to get there on time .His father hopes to borrow some money to buy a bike for him ,but he know his mother is always ill and his father spends much money on her medicine .He doesn’t agree with him and keeps running there every day .Now he’s very strong and never late for class and his teachers often praise him .

“I broke two school records today ,Granny ,”called out the boy .

To his surprise ,the old woman wasn’t happy .She thought for a while and said ,”I am sorry to hear that .We have no money to pay for

them ,you know !”

18-I Owe You for a Float

Mr Smith worked in a post office and three years ago ,when he was sixty ,he retired .Now he and his wife stay at home and his children work in another city .The old woman does all housework and he has nothing to do at home .He likes neither reading nor watching games .At first he didn’t know how to spend the spare time .Mr Hunt who was two years older than him asked him to go fishing with him .
