SCHOOLGIRL SEX: AND INDECENTOBSESSION TORMENTS JAPAN By: Michael FitzpatrickEVERY weekday, 14-year-old Junko Satoh is forced to wear the clothes that have a nation in sexual and moral turmoil. Cotton socks, loafers and prim navy suits are not the stuff that unbuttons most male libidos, but to Japanese men wrestling with a Lolita complex, school uniforms have become highly provocative.Cursing their fate, as Junko does when she is groped by unseen hands on crowded subways, schoolgirls in uniform are becoming a national sexual obsession in Japan. So much so that those aged between 13 and 18 can’t stray far from the school gates without being propositioned, according to a recent survey carried out in Tokyo, in which an astonishing 75 percent of girls questioned said they gad experienced solicitation for sex by older men.The reasons are two-fold. First, Japan’s media has turned the once innocuous schoolgirl into a sex object, making largely unsubstantiated claims about the availability of under-age sex for cash. Second, a small percentage of schoolgirls, some as young as 12, are said to be cashing in on the media attention by dabbling in prostitution. “Nowadays, older men seem to think schoolgirls are all prostitutes,” says one unnamed middle-class Tokyo high school student turned hooker, interviewed by the trend-spotting magazine Sapio. “We were in a shopping center the other day and a 40-year-old man came up to us and said: “I know what kind of girls you are. How much do you want?”“At first w e said we were only available for dates, but when he wouldn’t settle for that, we said OK. He then took us to a café, boughtus cake and started making arrangements. Ifreaked out and said I couldn’t do it that daybecause I had my period.”“He said: “That’s OK, I don’t mind periods.”My friend and I were totally revolted. So we insisted we meet in some faraway suburbanother time. When I told him we didn’t havethe money for the train trip, he immediatelyhave us $350 each. Of course we neverturned up.”Prostitution has long been big business in Japan, but only over the past few years has sex with minors become a big issue. In keeping with the curiously genteel argot surrounding Japan’s sex industry (or so-called “pink” trade), the rather coy monik er for this recent trend is “enjo kosai” roughly translated as “compensation dating.”A more literal interpretation is “support-exchange,” which also describes thetransaction between clients and women whobarter sexual favors for financial support inthe shape of rent, dinner and presents. It isalso how Japan’s legions of hostessessupplement their regular income. These women’s younger sisters are nowbeing roped into the same paid-sex game.Along with the media’s fixation on uniformedschoolgirls as sex goddesses have comemagazines devoted to schoolgirl icons, shopsspecializing in the sale of their used underwear and the notorious telephone clubs, chat lines on which men pay to be connected to potential “dates.”In Tokyo, more than a third of high school girls say they have used these clubs. Formany, they are just a giggle; for others, therepresent the means of gaining cachetamong their peers. The desire for money is paramount in Japan.Cases of genuine hardships drivingyoungsters into prostitution are rare: despitethe recession, the country in buoyant withresidual wealth and the need to possesimported brand-name goods has becomesomething of an obsession in certain quartersof Japanese society. The high price of these goods means thatmany young girls are tempted into lucrativeenjo kosai in order to afford them. In a Tokyolocal government survey of students carriedout last year, 38.1 percent said they did so forthe money. A Chanel lifestyle, after all, is hard to maintain on pocket money alone. Shimada, 18, is one such enjo girl. Sounembarrassed is she about her “part-timejob” that she has even gone on national TV totalk about it. Clients, she points out, can bevery generous. On the subject of one of the dozen or so men who have paid between $300 and $800 to have sex with her and her friends, she says simply: “He made us laugh. He bought nice gifts and he always paid first.”An authority on the subject of schoolgirls as sex objects is Shinji Miyadai, a professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University and author of The Choice of Uniformed Girls. He sees enjo kosai as evidence of a sick society. “Japanese people today live for money and high-image products. These are their values,” he says.Others point the finger of blame elsewhere. Concerned parents believe the phenomenon highlights inadequacies in the educational system, in particular a rigid curriculum that introduced sex education only last month. Educators, meanwhile, blame the parents. The Japanese Government has also been slow to take note. It is only this year that a bill has been passed in Tokyo prohibiting the procurement of sex form tends and younger children.Meanwhile, the nation still can’t decide whether its schoolgirls are victim of a manipulative media or wanton handmaidens of consumerism gone mad.File: Topic2Handout1.doc。
Nanking Massacre and Comfort Women

It's been more than 60 years now. I'm old and I didn't want to talk about such a shameful thing to other people. But then I thought, if I don't talk about it, they (Japanese WWII army) will get off too easily, I need to let the world know the crimes they committed in Nanjing and I need them to address the issue."

two kinds

Analysis of Two KindsTwo Kinds by Amy Tan is taken from Joy Luck Club, which is Amy’s first book. It is set in China and America and woven by stories of four Chinese mothers and their four daughters. This novel reveals the conflicts between two generations and two different cultures, and Two Kinds only talks about one girl named Jing-mei and her mother.IntroductionIn the short story “two kinds”, the author wrote a story between a Chinese immigrant mother and her daughter, who was born in the US. The setting of the two main characters reveals the bitter and sweet relationships between them. The Chinese immigrant mother used traditional education method, forcing the daughter to do something that her daughter did not like to do, because she hoped that the daughter would become a prodigy in the future. The mother sent her daughter to study the piano in the neighbor’s home. However, the daughter didn’t like the training and refused to be educated with piano. Needless to say, the daughter disappointed the mother again and again, until the mother lost hope in her and decide to let her go freely. As the daughter grew up, her life unfolded with many hardships, which were far more complicated and bitter than the fight with her mother. Near the end of the story, the daughter received a piano from her mother in her 30th birthday party. She found herself playing the piano more smoothly than before. She finally understood her mother’s love to her.Regarding the family education issue revealed by the story, McNamaraexpr essed his theory of stress in the book “Stress in Young People: What's New and What to Do”.He analyzed the new situations of stress facing today’s young people. He acknowledged that the stress of the family could be devastating in the growth of young people. But he also argued that young people should learn how to release the stress through effective communication with parents and efforts of independence both spiritually and materially (McNamara, 2000).Of course, the story is compelling not only because its plot but also the techniques used to tell it. In my opinion, the essential literary terms include plot, protagonist, and symbol. Plot means that the story has particular use of formal and informal words. Protagonist means that the story carefully chooses words for the description of the protagonists’ behaviors and gestures. Symbol means that the story uses a variety of rhetoric devices to make its descriptions vividly.Analysis on PlotThe plot of the story leads the readers to consider the conflict between the mother and the daughter in cultural conflicts. All mothers in the world, regardless of their cultural background, have the same wish of expecting their children to have a bright future. However, the process of achieving this goal is very complicated, especially when the family members come from different cultural backgrounds. For a variety of reasons, conflicts in the American society occur at all levels, especially for new immigrant families. Whenever a conflict between the mother’s expectation and the reality occurs, the way of compromise between themother and the child becomes crucial. The most important factor in immigrant family conflicts is cultural conflict, especially between those cultures that have very different origins and histories, such as the Chinese and American cultures. Through the evolution in thousands of years, Chinese culture has gradually formed its unique social values and moral standards. For example, the life of Chinese people is basically centered around social relationship and is also bound by it. Each Chinese people is only concerned with his or her own affairs, and rarely dealing with strangers outside the social network. Rising above the peers and being respected by relatives are important for Chinese people’s life, otherwise they will feel to lose face (Hucker 132-135). The Americans, on the other hand, usually have a federal research division, which means that only center around themselves.Based on above information about the differences between Chinese and American cultures, it is reasonable for us to understand that the tension between the mother and the daughter mainly comes from the mother’s expectation of face and the daughter’s insist on herself. Jingmei's mother called her to practice the piano because her mother wanted her to beat the Aunt Lindo’s daughter in the music field. If the daughter did not succeed in doing so, her mother will feel to lose face, because Aunt Lindo’s daughter had won reputation in the community for her championship in international chess tournament. This can be verified by words of Jingmei’s mother telling her daughter, “You can be the best. Aunt Lindo knows what? Her daughter plays tricks” (Tan 360). Jingmei's mother believed thatthrough appropriate guidance, Jingmei can become a genius and stand out among the children, even though in fact Jingmei has no such talent. In the story, Jingmei played badly in the piano competition, and eventually refused to play the piano.Born in the United States, Jingmei could not understand this forcing behaviors from her mother. Obviously, the fear of losing face is the major reason that leads to the conflict between the mother and the daughter.Analysis on ProtagonistThe chararistics of the protagonist is another reason that leads to the contradicts between the mother and Jingmei. In typical Chinese family, the high expectations from parents are sometimes so high that the children are overwhelmed. In this story, Jingmei’s mother expects Jingmei to become a famous pianist or a female actress like Shirley Temple. This kind of unrealistic expectation is driving Jingmei crazy. Why does Jingmei’s mother have such unrealistic dreams for her daughter? If we look at her life experiences, we will find part of the answer to this question. Before Jingmei’s mother imigrated to the United States, she experienced the horrors of war and destruction of life. As she entered the United States for political asylum, like many other new immigrants, she believed in the American dreams: with perseverance, strong mind, and a little bit luck, Jingmei should be able to reach her expectation and enjoy a bright future, as long as Jingmei carried out what she required Jingmei to do. But it is obvious that Jingmei could not carry out her mother’s expectation.Like any other traditional Chinese parents, Jingmei’s mother had very little effective communication with her daughter, because she completely conducted things in accordance to with her own ways. In the mind of Jingmei’s mother,.ConclusionThe story “two kinds” reveals a serious family education issue that scholars and readers have discussed a lot. In the story, the daughter’s rival behavior against her mother’s stress caused bad relationships between them. Only when she turned 30, she began to realize her mother’s deep love towards her. Taking this story as an example, McNamara suggested that young people should learn how to cope with family stress in positive ways. From the stylistic analysis of this novel, we can see how the stylistic devices are used in it to achieve certain purposes. Informal words are used to make a relax atmosphere, but formal words used in informal situation can give rise to humor or serve other certain purposes. Also, the use of rhetoric devices can make your character more lifelike and can help achieve an effect of art.Works CitedMcNamara, Sarah. Stress in Young People: What's New and What To Do. BRITISH PRIMARY SCHOOL 英国初等学校介绍

• By law, all children of compulsory school age (between 5 and 16) must receive a full-time education. The UK introduced a National Curriculum in 1992 and state schools are required to adhere to it until students reach age 16. However, independent or 'public' schools are not obliged to do so.
• Test
• Primary school students in England sit standardized tests 'SATs' in Year 6 and in Year 2. These tests are used to provide individual student results and to rank schools according to their performance. Tests include Numeracy, Mental Math, Reading Comprehension, Writing, Spelling and Science. A final level is awarded for Math, English and Science. Wales and Northern Ireland abolished the tests quite some time ago, whilst Scotland never implemented the SATs.

Two schoolgirls raped in northern India
NEW DELHI - The spate of rapes continues in India -- this time, two schoolgirls have been raped in two separate incidents in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh Tuesday night, a senior police officer said Wednesday.
"Four to five people gangraped a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Vikas Nagar on the outskirts of state capital Shimla. Two persons, including her classmate and a local cab driver have been arrested. Efforts are on to track down two to three other accused," he said, on condition of anonymity.
In another incident, a 16-year-old girl, who hailed from a village near Kufri to meet a relative at the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla, was allegedly raped by a shopkeeper, the officer said, adding that the accused has been arrested.
Last year, the brutal and fatal gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in the Indian capital shocked the country and sparked massive protests, compelling the government to bring in strict laws against sexual offenders.
Four of the adult rapists were last month sentenced to death by a fast-track court while the main accused committed suicide in his prison cell during the trial. The sixth accused, being a minor, was asked to undergo three years in a reforms facility by a juvenile court.。
