②对梁思成这样的人却不然。古建筑在他眼中，永远是有生命的物体。一砖一瓦，一根立柱，一处斗拱，一幅雕像，都是活生生的存在。当他攀登本塔时，当他考察一座座石桥时，当他观看北京城墙时，他决不是一个冷静的旁观者，而是将自己的全部生命，与他所接触的对象融为一体了。

③“‘建筑，是一种艺术，因而它在某些方面是人类或建造者的表现。”一位英国学者说。
④梁思成恰恰在这方面拥有了建筑的灵魂。他以做学问起步，从枯燥的架构分析、材料分析、形状勾勒等等专业常识，走进了包容历史与现实的人类精神。这样，他对建筑历史的描述，已不能仅仅视为单一的学问。只有他真正了解那些古建筑的价值，因为他把它们和创造它们的人的精神视为一体。
⑤人们一般都愿意以无比钦佩的心情，提及梁思成在二次大战期间为日本名城奈良免遭轰炸所做出的努力。对于一般人来说，这的确是难以想象的举动。他和全民族都遭受日本侵略带来的痛苦，而他的妻子林徽因的弟弟，作为一名中国军队的飞机驾驶员，就牺牲于对日空战之中。国耻家恨，都完全可以让他对美军轰炸日本本土感到高兴。
⑥然而，梁思成想得更远、更深。他是一个冷静的历史主义者。在烽火连天的岁月，在仇恨很容易支配人们一切行为的时刻，唯独他，依旧把热爱倾注在人类古建筑上，他知道，地球上的所有文化遗产，都属于人类。
⑦在美军炮火开始猛烈轰炸日本本土时，梁思成却立马赶到美军设在重庆的指挥部，向美军上校布朗森递交上一份日本文化名城奈良的古建筑图纸，并要求保护奈良城。为什么呢？正如梁思成所说：“要是从我个人感情出发，想到国人的苦难，我是恨不得炸日本人，然而，一种职业与历史责任感，让我冷静下来，建筑是社会的缩影，民族的象征，但绝不是某一民族的，而是全人类的结晶。像奈良唐招提寺，是全世界最早的木结构建筑，一旦炸毁，是无法补救的。”
